  • We've been testing the San Hima Kalbarri Gen 2 rooftop tent from Vic Offroad for a few months now, taking it on a range of trips around WA. We've had the chance to test this roof top tent in a variety of situations and today we'll be sharing what we LOVE and what we HATE about the Kalbarri MK2!

Another thoughtful review. 👍 The design looks almost identical to my Darche Ridgeback RTT. And with the rear wall moving away from the tent, this design feature surprisingly provides so much more volume inside (compared to the RTT design that goes straight up to the tip of the hard shell). And I too love the vertical side channels of my RTT. I use the channels to mount my shower awning and a long handled shovel.

Great review again , your the best going around IMHO. A major problem I see with that is the safety issues of standing or sitting on the thing to close it or leaning around the sides to tuck in the canvas. It looked very slippery in the rain. I have a completely different style of roof top tent , custom made , that flips over the back of my tray top camper like a camper trailer style. and gives you a covered area out the back and we have a full size double bed in it. Best there is and I get so many people asking where did you get it never seen one like that before.

Great review mate, it seems one of the less user friendly RTTs. I was keen for your 12 month review on the Dune hardtop RTT, It’s on my short list of RTT anyway and your 3 month review seemed positive.

With regards to all ur bedding and pillows. U could get those space bags u suck down with a pump. Adapt a 12v pump to create a good seal on the port and flatten ur pillows right down and then leave them in the tent? Infact anyone who struggles for space having to cart their bedding around space bags are the go.

Seems like a pretty solid design, big question is, while it was in use and raining did any water come in (not including the water issue explained), and would you buy one ?, the negatives seemed pretty minor except for the water one.

  • @jessemartin6461

So many CZcams channels promote loading up the tub/ canopy to bypass roof load ratings. The roof load rating is primarily there to reduce the risk of rollover, this increased risk of rollover will still be there no matter if the load is on the canopy or the car itself.

    • @ianweal3081
      @ianweal3081 Před 11 měsíci

I can also concur, bundutop wins, irrespective of price difference, primarily it's the mechanism you pay for over the additional space to store bedding.
I'm gobsmacked when I see couples pull up, Pop the rooftop tent, then unload the bedding from the car, make the bed, "what's the point I say".
Obviously the drawback of this convenience is additional height, but that comprise is an easy choice knowing I release four catches, press a button and climb into a fully made bed in under one minute.
Zero issues locating/assembling poles for internal frame, zero issues with straps flapping, zero issues with rain ingress thanks to 360° self erecting awning, but again thats the mechanism you pay for.
After a comfy night's sleep (something about sleeping under canvas just makes a sleep more enticing for me), we make our bed up, place pillows (X3) in centre of bed, press down button, do a check all fabric within seal, press down again, fasten 4 over centre catches, we're packed down ready to explore.
Doesn't come any simpler than that, yes, for a bit more money bundutop wins, hands down.
Negative - We did however do away with original mattress as it was too firm and very heavy, chose a lighter option for comfort and weight reduction.
      Positives - total setup convenience.
      Internal roof mounted led light.
2 X roof mounted cooling fans included.
In addition to that convenience I've added,
Led switchable reading lights X 2.
Led external light that's internally switched.
      Switched 12v electric blanket.
      Diesel heater, internally mounted.
Yes, our bundutop is a comfy place to be irrespective of the climate. 4 catches, press a button, climb into bed, love it.

@@explorebound , Yes, 75mm mattrass, plus matrass topper, thick duvet and normal pillows in there. It is really very nice. The price is steep though. I paid $5000 for it in 2019.
Made from fiberclass. Did a lot of offroading with it, and it is very strong and holding up nicely.
