  • This is my list of some of the more popular rooftop tents currently available in Australia. They are in no specific order. Below I have added chapter links so if there is a specific tent that you want to know more about, you can click straight through to that section.
    I want to stress how important it is to check the rating of your roof and roof racks before you buy a rooftop tent. If you want more info on this, please check out Tyler Thompson’s video - • Is your ROOF RACK a DI... - it will give you some insight into how important this is - he actually lost his rooftop tent.

    Great job on the RTT reviews! I've had a couple RTTs and I find that each time I buy a new one, I buy a smaller and lighter one.

      I'm still not 100% convinced which one to opt for - size, weight and price are all crucial. And as we already have a camper trailer, not sure my wife would let me spend $3k plus on a tent!

    Had a Darche , looked at the Baroud style (hired one on a vehicle in NT). Problem with this (and many clamshell tents) is no window coverage for rain. When hot and raining, you either stay hot or get wet. Ended up with a Bush Company Clamshell, fast up, fast down, comfortable and well made (but not cheap and a little heavier than some)...

    • @KOTW.Adventures
      @KOTW.Adventures  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the feedback. It is hard to choose because you only figure out the quirks after you start to use the tent.

    Great video, what would have also been useful is if you had put the estimate close down time. Set up is usually easy on most tents, packing down can be difficult and many people looking into RTT may think that packing down is easy and quick….trust me, it’s not always the case

    The Kings Tourer was my first RTT and was pretty good considering the price with annex it was on my Subaru XV before putting it on a Pod Trailer . I switched to the Dune Nomad because I wanted a super fast setup/ packup, the gas strut failed after 3 months, took it back to Anacoanda for full refund. I used ground tents for a while then decided to splurge and bought an ikamper 2x for Simpson Desert crossing. The ikamper was certainly worth the money.

      I'm sticking with my swag for the moment too. I've decided not to buy a cheap roof top and regret it later, so will save up for a more expensive hard shell like the iKamper. On a Subaru? I'm impressed!

      @@KOTW.Adventures yeah i put a 2" lIft on the Subaru, bash plate and off road tyres.
      I did all the outback tracks, including meneerie loop rd to AlIce Springs and even went up Big Red both ways after a short stint into the Simpson Desert. This was before i bought the Amarok and did the crossing. I had the ikamper on the Subie first then switch it to the Amarok. The wife drives it now.

    I have a Mayson Taylor rooftop tent I bought from T & R sports here in Melbourne. It retails for about $1300 however I got mine for $1000 through z discount option avail at the time. They delivered it my door. I did a lot of researching prior to buying and this was the best for the price. Very good quality hard top pop-up tent with no wind drag. Closes down very thin, can leave sleeping stuff inside and has a 7cm good quality removable mattress. Cannot recommend it enough.

    I do not recommend buying a James Baroud Evo RTT. The warranty is useless in Australia as the importer and dealer on the east coast are unhelpful even with major issues. Currently dealing via the ACC for a refund.

      I’m having the same trouble with James Baroud. The solar fan stopped working after 1 yr and now after light use over 2 years the hull has started to crack. James Baroud have said the cracks are caused by a “casual event” and not covered by the 5 yr warranty that covers the hull…etc.
      The 5 year warranty was one of the main reasons I invested over $5500.
      I would definitely not recommend buy any of their rooftop tents.

      Most of these would probably need some sort of mattress upgrade if you are going to use them for more than a couple of nights in a row and then you would need to check if they will still close properly with the extra thickness of the mattress.
