  • There was the trailer for the collectors edition for Assassin’s Creed Shadows that was released, and in that trailer, there was a moment where the full map seemed to be revealed to us. What I want to do in this video is pretty much go over the full map that was shown, and go over some things that I felt are worth mentioning in regards to the map such as breaking down each region and certain things that we might see in the game.

Assassin's Creed is an open-world, action-adventure, and stealth game franchise published by Ubisoft and developed mainly by its studio Ubisoft Montreal using the game engine Anvil and its more advanced derivatives. Created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond, and Corey May, the Assassin's Creed video game series depicts a fictional millennia-old struggle between the Order of Assassins, who fight for peace and free will, and the Knights Templar, who desire peace through order and control. The series features historical fiction, science fiction, and fictional characters intertwined with real-world historical events and historical figures. In most games, players control a historical Assassin while also playing as an Assassin Initiate or someone caught in the Assassin-Templar conflict in the present-day framing story. Considered a spiritual successor to the Prince of Persia series, Assassin's Creed took inspiration from the novel Alamut by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol, based on the historical Hashashin sect of the medieval Middle East.

I much prefer big maps but the smaller maps of the older games fit the theme of Assassin's Creed better.
However if a big map is utilized well, then I would prefer that over anything else. It's good that they're going for an Origins sized map since it's going to be easier filling the map with things to do, plus it felt a bit boring traversing Odyssey's and Valhalla's maps.

"Are you more of a big map person, or a small map person?"
Depends on the quality of the game and the care put into the world.
For example, Elden Ring was massive. Every time I thought I had the full map revealed, it'd open a new massive area. But I was totally there for it. Amazing experience through and through.
Valhalla was too big for its own good, the gameplay wasn't varied enough nor was the side content rewarding enough to make the map worth exploring, it felt like a slog.
Mirage was actually too small imo. It was great for the 30 hours it lasted but after that, there's nothing really to do.
If Shadows has really quality gameplay with rewarding exploration, I'm totally in support of a massive map that I can get lost in for months.

Big maps focus on two dimensions. ESPECIALLY when much of it is just water like black flag and odyssey, but Valhalla and Shadows are guilty of this too to some extent. Smaller maps give us the freedom of the third dimension, which black flag also delivers on despite having large waters because it has separate maps for dense cities. There’s nothing an Assassin needs more than freedom.

12:25 Ise was actually one of the most remarkable regions in Japan at the time, as it's home to the Grand Shine (dedicated to Amaterasu, the head deity of the Shinto pantheon, whom you mentioned) - the holiest site in Shinto, as it houses one of Japan's three sacred treasures, a bronze mirror. The relation to Amaterasu is particularly relevant because, according to Japanese Imperial tradition, the Imperial Family descends directly from her.
If I were to guess how Ubisoft would incorporate the region in the game, I'd say they could make it so the bronze mirror (one of the three treasures I mentioned) is a piece of Eden/Isu artefact, or possibly even something straight-up mythological DLC, in which the Grand Shrine could act as the bridge to the Takamagahara realm, ruled by Amaterasu, similar to how we had the Elysium in AC Odyssey. Either way, I do hope Ubisoft goes on to include Ise because it was one of the regions I was most excited to explore!

Great summary, however, a couple of pointers:
    1) "Osaka castle" existed to an extent at the time...as it was built (1583) within the site (and remains) of the monastery fortress of Ishiyama Hongan-ji (destroyed in 1580);
    2) Himeji castle should be significantly different from what it is today...as it was expanded in 1581 and a couple of times after...before being demolished, and rebuilt (expanded) in 1600 to roughly its current dimensions...
For me, my biggest concern is the map size claims that will meet AC: Origins size, but scale will be more representative of the locations size...the provinces on the map include a huge number of big settlements (both towns and cities), many historical relevant villages (case of Fukuchiyama we see on the trailer - there are several more important villages in tbe region), the post stations on the Nakasendo or Tokaido (played a major role in spionage and army movements back then), the religious complexes in the mountain ranges that should be in the game (e.g. Mount Koya or Mount Yoshino) etc...
Given the amount of content, it feels to me hard to believe they would be able to fit all this content in a map the size of AC Origins and make it justice....

I like a big map to explore in an rpg game, but it needs to be more linear when it comes to progression in the main story of the game. Limits in an open world rpg gets me more immersed and in sync with the story and the games characters. I hate a game where you can just charge forth and instantly gain level and then crap on low level enemies in the beginning of the story. It's just not as fun and fulfilling in my point of view. I just like to have a challenge.
    Sorry for the rambling.

Smaller, more detailed and more intimate maps with more unique locations and missions > Massive maps where everything looks the same and you only visit each location for half an hour before moving on to the next location and never setting foot there ever again.

If the map is big and empty like in Odessey then I would prefer smaller maps like brotherhood.
They can make the size accurate but make everything else inaccurate, cherry blossoms and rice harvesting in the same season, cherry blossoms turns green, Tori gates as entrances to towns.

I like big maps in the RPG games but the thing I noticed is the city's aren't built for good parkour it's mainly just jumping from roof to roof and climbing so if they made the city's specifically for good parkour then I'd be fine with the rest of the map but they just aren't dence enough for a good parkour rout so that's something I'd like to see in this game, anyway come to think of it maybe just make the map around orgins or a little smaller and build the city's for parkour and I'm good and I'm meaning like how mirage city's look, so picture that then have the open world what you can explore with secrets, base camps etc, and I'd like them alot more

While not a huge AC fan/player, Black Flag was the 1st one I played and Origins is probably my 2nd favourite open world game I've recently played, but, Shadows looks like an AC game I wouldn't mind getting into again.
Odyssey only got 20hrs of play before I called it quits, and I'm already British so I didn't care much for Valhalla and horseriding around boring England countrysides and, Mirage seemed like Origins 1.5 without Bayek, so I skipped that one too.
Been in love with Japan since I was a kid in the 90s and ancient feudal Japan will be even more scenic, plus, it helps that he's a black man living in Japan (a dream of mine).

AC in japan is somethign i dreamed of as a kid ever since i was parkuring around jerusalim killing templars all those years ago. Now I have to be clear that I want Assassins Creed in Japan, meaning that big brute with a musket is not what I came for. My only question is how much of the story is mandatory to play as him, since I know Ubistof and they sure as F did not spent all that dev time on 2 characters only for me to play 1. So my only question is, will I be able to play 90% of game with only the assassin?

I think it depends on the game. I would always take quality over quantity.
For instance, the smaller maps of the ME trilogy was more effective than the larger maps of Andromeda.
Open worlds are only fun if they are full of meaningful content. If you are spending most of your time just running from place to place with nothing going on then it is just boring.
Out of the open world AC games, I think Origins was the closest to getting the balance right. I never got bored of Egypt but Greece and England felt like a chore.

I far prefer a good large map. Mirage's map was essentially just one or two towns because of all the blank space, and valhalla's map was huge but similarly empty. Games like Elden ring and horizon zero dawn/forbidden west had large maps jam packed with unique experiences.
