When it comes down to it, Thrawn's sense of duty to those he loves (his people) is no different than any of the Rebels. He simply views the Empire as a better chance for survival for the Chiss because his homeland, and the galaxy as a whole, are under threat.

    He was awesome in the Zahn books. While it was great to see him in Rebels, I don't think the show did him justice. They only touched on what he was capable of, but I felt that he was too easily defeated. I hope that they make him a real threat with real stakes and losses to back them up.
    In the books, he felt that the Emperor and Vader made a lot of mistakes that led to the downfall of the Empire. He believed that their brutal tactics would inevitably lead to their downfall. Thrawn wasn't prone to tantrums like Vader who would force choke anyone who failed him, but instead Thrawn would allow subordinates to learn and grow. He was a teacher as much as a tactician. This caused those who served under him to be truly loyal, not out of fear but out of respect. He made people want to serve him, not feel like they have to serve him.
    It doesn't mean that he wasn't ruthless when it called for it, but only when he felt it was absolutely necessary. He didn't seem to feel glee or happiness at the suffering of others, but simply as a means to achieve his goals.

    Another thing that makes Thrawn so dangerous is the fact that he’s not arrogant and will give credit where it’s due and is not opposed to listening to others ideas. So he doesn’t have the same flaw that other imperial commanders had and that’s another thing that makes him so dangerous besides his brilliant tactical abilities. But another thing, it was an incredibly smart decision by LucasFilm and Disney to have Timothy Zahn return to give advice on the cannon version of Thrawn. My main hope is that Thrawn will not be killed. Thrawn is a great antagonist, but a poor villain. I can imagine him wanting to restore the Empire to secure additional material and manpower for his efforts supporting his people, but with Palpatine out of the way, he isn’t the kind of leader to causually resort to atrocities to secure his objectives. Since we know that Thrawn is ultimately unsuccessful in restoring the Empire, I would like to see something along the lines of him deciding that trying to reunify the fractured New Republic by force is more trouble than it’s worth and withdrawing his forces plus whatever he and his forces can seize back to the Unknown Regions.

    • @mish375
      @mish375 Před rokem +3

      I'd like to see Zahn change Thrawn's ending now that they're going in a new direction. Instead of Thrawn being assassinated Julius Caesar style, they could have him fake his death. He's almost reunified the Empire and the Grysk/Vong threat is eliminated; but the FO members are turning against him. Thrawn sees the writing on the wall and has Gil Pellaeon, Eli Vanto, and Ar'alani help him fake his death. To most of the galaxy, he's dead. In reality, Thrawn returns to the Ascendancy with Ar'alani and Eli, leaving Gil as the last Imperial Officer like in the books. What happens to Thrawn after that is a mystery, unless Zahn wants to write some more Thrawn books for people who like the character.

    Would be interesting to see if Thrawn and Ezra are working together as I consider Thrawn more as an antagonist rather than an outright villian. It makes sense since in the Unknown Regions (The Chaos), the Chiss use "Skywalkers" (later determined to be force sensitive Chiss) to navigate Hyperspace. Thrawn having an actual Jedi (even a Padawan like Ezra) to help him navigate the Unknown Regions they were thrown into. Especially if Ezra were to learn of Thrawns true motivations and how serious a threat the Grysk are.

    • @mish375
      @mish375 Před rokem +5

      That would be an interesting plot twist. Ezra's friends would be alarmed at this, but then Ezra would have to explain that there's a bigger threat to the universe than just the Empire. And that's why they need Thrawn because with everyone so fractured after the fall of the Empire, it leaves them wide open for the Grysk to attack. I think it would be great if they red herring the audience into thinking Thrawn is the main villain, but then the heroes have to reluctantly ally with him temporarily for survival due to the incoming threat. And you realize that Thrawn's plan for reuniting the Empire is more about military might and unity to fight a war against a more powerful enemy.

      I take comfort in the fact that Filoni is working with the writer of the books (Zahn) on live action Thrawn. I think it'll be fine. I'm not familiar with Rebels as I haven't seen it (just seen some clips), but the books were fantastic. It really shows how loved Thrawn is given that they decanonized him and then he was brought back.
      I like the idea that maybe Ezra bringing in the ghost crew to work with Thrawn would really give everyone some character complexity. The idea that in war the other side is heartless would be challenged. One man's brutal acts are viewed as saving lives in the long run. And Thrawn trying to unite everyone against the Grysk threat would be perfect for this as he's always playing 3D chess while others haven't even gotten on the board yet. Wishful thinking, but, I think it would be cool if, after the temporary alliance ends, Thrawn and Ezra have a newfound begrudging respect for each other now that they see each other's perspectives. It would add a lot of narrative complexity that would fit with the characters.

Sees the need for hyperdrive, shielded fighter, gunboats and dedicated carriers. (chis fighter, Tong fan, B frigates v2, xg1 star wing and the missile boat, to name but a few) He knows how 3d space combat works and that the interdictor cruiser is more advantageous than yet another star destroyer. That building yet another super star destroyer will be far less cost effective than a balanced fleet of 'lesser' ships for the smae prize.

    I think the coolest thing about Thrawn to me, besides him just being an all around great and interesting villain that added some real variety to Star Wars both in Legends and in how he’s been used in the new canon so far, is how he’s kind of both an expansion on and massive improvement on the sort of villain Palpatine was originally imagined to be in prototype form when George Lucas first imagined the world of Star Wars when making A New Hope. But unlike Palpatine, or… the non-force wielding hypothetical version I’ll call Prepatine, who was a bumbling political pawn ultimately underlying the Empire’s power (admittedly, a fun piece of social commentary we ended up not receiving… we got evil space warlock Ian chewing on scenery instead, and that’ll never get old) Thrawn is a cunning, military and political mastermind, who also happens to be an ordinary man, or humanoid… who manages to bring rebellions and New Republics to their knees even when they have powerful force wielders on their side. He’s like, the perfect anti-Palpatine, and probably the kind of villain the sequel trilogy actually needed to separate it from the first six films.

This is just a key testament to his intelligence and ability to win battles and wars. I'm excited to see more of thrones as I watched him in Star wars rebels and was amazed and happy that they brought him into cannon. It will be exciting for me to say the least to see what unfolds with the wrong continuing in Canon. I can't wait to see it as long as Dave Filoni is in charge I'm sure everything will be awesome!!!

    The most unfortunate thing about all of this is that because the sequel trilogy has such an established end for all this we know what it's going to lead to. As all of this could have been a lead up to a war with the Grysk.
    Thrawn could be a red herring and in the middle of the chaos of them trying to stop him from coming back then the Grysk show up and the Galaxy has to band together in order to stop them.
    I feel like a threat like that is something that Star Wars needs to move away from rebels versus empire. I know that's at the core of Star Wars but I feel like we've beaten that horse into glue.
    The sequel movies were such a bad idea and it's even worse that they're now doubling down on it...

Imagine a dialogue after he is defeated and he says something along the lines of “you fools, the empire was our best defense for the the threats you have not yet seen or know exist, the republic would not be strong enough for it is based in peace and not war. You have doomed us all” then the Jedi take him and go to the unknown regions and they see the new threats and come back and the Jedi themselves admit that the empire was the better option and more. It would be such a good ending and such a great introduction into unseen parts of the universe for the fans with thrawn, Jedi and the republic realizing what a mistake it was to get rid of the empire.

This making himself supreme leader. Starting the tradition of the supreme leaders killing each other. The first order failed because they killed the genius behind it.
    This leads well into the Rey movie in that 15 years after the final order Rey has to deal with the grysk because the lack of Jedi and resistance thanks to the fight with the first order makes the grysk think it a great time to strike. Not necessarily any more Force sensitive than any other race. In the books, it is typically their young female Chiss that have this ability. The Chiss military identifies them when they are young, takes them from their families and enlists them as "navigators" through hyperspace for their military vessels. It's a bit of a secret, as no one outside the military really knows how the Chiss are able to navigate "The Chaos" (as the Chiss call the Unknown Regions). They tend to lose their sensitivity when they hit their mid-teens. They are actually highly regarded and basically tended-to hand and foot by a "handler" that is assigned to them. Once they lose their abilities, they are retired, but are essentially "set" for life for their service to the Chiss military. They call them "skywalkers" (yes...there's intentional irony there) and it isn't initially correlated to The Force. It is Thrawn who eventually makes that connection.

You can be "adopted" into families of higher standing by being "recruited" if you have something to offer.
