--------
In the opening clip, The Source magazine's founder, Dave Mays, discussed his upbringing and entry into Hip Hop. Mays was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and excelled as a student. While he was exposed to Hip Hop during junior high and high school, Mays was much more into the local Go-go genre. After high school, Mays attended Harvard University and -- despite the culture shock of going to the Ivy League school -- he discovered a fellow student who was also a Hip Hop fan. In 1986, two started a late-night Hip Hop show on Harvard's college radio station which led Mays to become more involved with the genre. To hear Dave Mays explain why 1986 was such a pivotal year in rap, check out the clip above.
In the latest clip, Dave Mays talked about The Source evolving from a one-page newsletter that he used to produce in order to sell sponsorships for his college radio station. He recalled there being a curious Hip Hop fanbase in the Boston area but there were no major stations that played Black music. Because of this, Boston listeners were unbiased towards rappers from other regions.
After noticing callers would often ask more information about a rap song or artist, Mays began to expand the newsletter to more pages and eventually co-founded The Source with radio station co-host and schoolmate, John Shecter. Mays talked about Slick Rick appearing on the magazine's third cover, when each issue cost $1.25. Mays also explained how he built relationships with over 1,000 record stores and various record labels before drawing comparisons between Rolling Stone magazine and The Source. To hear more, check out the clip above.

According to Jerry Heller, in his Book; "Ruthless: A Memoir," he and Eazy-E were early investors in "The Source" magazine when Dave Mays was still attending Harvard: “Dave Mays and I had been-you know [Eazy-E] and I had put [The Source] in business. When him and Jon Shecter and [James Bernard founded the magazine], they were roommates at Harvard [University]. We used to send them money every month. See, The Source was a mimeographed sheet that would come over your fax machine a couple times a month. So we would send them a couple of hundred bucks every month, and we would actually pay for their supplies, to start The Source."

Vlad has been aching for someone to come and talk about Eminem. Just wait for whatever part it is gonna be 🤣
I REALLY MISS HOW LIFE USE TO BE , BEFORE THE INTERNET TOOK OVER THE WORLD 😒
Man let's talk about it. I miss more these days than ever. Especially the 90s. We were getting enough technology to not drive things over the wall.
The Source was where a lot of us saw or heard about Eminem for the first time. I remember him being in there in the Hip Hop Quotable section if I’m correct. It might have been a different section but yo that was in the 90’s. Man we read that shit like it was the Bible back then. It really is no joke when they refer to it as the hip hop bible. Seeing all the ads for dj gear in the back is what made me want to get started djing. Shout out to Dave Mays. You created a really beautiful thing.
Unsigned hype
You can tell the level of respect Vlad has for someone by the length of the clips.
aha
That's your assumption.

When the source said it was 5 mics… it was 5 mics… until that whole Benzino fiasco. But other than that. The Source is legendary.
not true! they rated west coast and shout side almost never 5 mics
They hated on a lot of albums that weren’t East Coast like both Chronics for example
Oh man. I can’t wait to hear about the downfall. The source was my bible at one point, I would read it cover to cover and I became an expert on everyone, including the stuff I hated, but I still read it because I wanted to know everything. Then they decided to pick a fight with Eminem

I have every issue from issue # 2 to June 2000.….still have all my Red Alert,Marley Marl "In Control" Stretch & Bobbito shows and many others, that I bought off cats selling tapes in the back pages of the SOURCE....Peace! Will in Evansville, Indiana
The way the interviewer is talking to this guy is completely different than how he interviews a lot of the other guests.

My guess is he went to Wilson High school and Deal jr high in DC til this day 2 of the best schools anywhere in this country . Wow I didnt know he was a DC native. Im sorry ,but this makes it more amazing that he created the Source being he is from DC. If you from DC you had to basically be a closet lover of Rap in its pure form back then ,for him to create the source he had to be passionate about rap. What we DC people didnt understand was we like rap but it had to have a GO GO beat to it. So DC natives wanted it to sound local. DC got to see so many great RAP artist early before the masses knew who they where, because they would do shows at the GOGO and we would be scratching are heads and you could hear a pin drop, not realizing the GoGo band would remake the rap song and we would love it Lol. RAp in its pure form dominates GoGo now all day everyday. Great insight
