Part 1: • Dave Mays on How He La...
    --------
In this clip, Dave Mays discusses the influence of The Source during its heyday and the way in which the startup platform helped launch the careers of some of the biggest rappers in the '90s. The Washington DC native also talks about the popularity of the publication and the influence of its editors. The founder of the trailblazing hip-hop magazine also details some of the verbal sparing that went on between his content creators and rap groups such as Cypress Hill. And lastly, Dave Mays reflects on the way his friendship with Benzino and how it nearly prompted his own team to boycott his position as their leader.

Then they put Benzino in the greatest 100 rhymes of all time article. MULTIPLE times! And they put his rhymes in there with all the great classic MC’s & verses out there-- everybody was done with the Source lol.

"Rob Marriott reviewed the first OutKast album. He gave it 4.5 mics. I agreed with his opinion and the rating stood. When Ray found out about this (for some reason Ray just hated OutKast, and you have to wonder if that is why it took them so many years to get a Source cover), he hit the roof. He walked into Rob’s office and struck up a very loud conversation. I was next door hanging out in James Bernard’s office and we heard all of this yelling and screaming. It sounded like a fight was about to jump off. I walk into Rob’s office just as Ray is leaving and catch the last volley of “fuck yous.” Ray continues down the hall to Dave’s office. I ask Rob what is going on and he tells me that Ray started bugging out over the Outkast review, calling the group bullshit, and making threats about what he would do if the next RSO album doesn’t receive similarly high marks.
I’m like, ‘really?‘ And walk down to Dave’s office in search of Ray. I get there and see Ray sitting on Dave’s sofa so I walk over and stand right over him. I start yelling at him and he pops up off the couch like he wants to do something. Now Ray is only five feet tall in Timbs and two pairs of socks, so the whole thing looks ridiculous. Dave is looking nervous and by now other people have made it back to Dave’s office to see where this will all end up. Ray and I square off for about ten very tense seconds and then sensing that he’s not ready to throw a punch, I give him a few more “fuck you, nigga”s and then start walking out of Dave’s office. On the way out I can hear Ray screaming my name, calling me all kinds of bitches and motherfuckers, but he’s only saying this shit as I’m walking away, so I’ve got his number."

So basically benzino destroyed the integrity of the magazine . I mean with a classic albums and how they rated Them with everything to me as a young man loved hip-hop I would always look at what they felt was superior and sometimes there were some that I disagreed with like only built for Cuban LinX should’ve gotten more doggy style should’ve gotten wore in a whole host of others but then ones they got right like tribe called Quest and Nas, solidified the true hip-hop critique not like you have now where everybody just put out trash in the young generation just likes it they have no clue. I think those source as hip-hop grew into the 2000s I think at a certain point in order for it to grow the rating systems couldn’t have a hold on what the consumer was being fed. But then again when you don’t rate albums like that And hold the culture to a higher standard this is why we have the trash music we have now.

The writers were right about RSO being whack but so what? That's Dave's magazine too and RSO are his guys. All Dave was doing was trying to give his guys some promo and help their career grow. Business is business. The writers got too high and mighty over the Almighty RSO. Most people could see that the RSO ship would sink not sail. I see nothing wrong with Dave trying to throw his homies a bone. (Pause) It's not like RSO was the first wack rappers to be featured in the Source Magazine. Let the guy feature his friends if he wants. You can tell that the writers just didn't like RSO personally, and the issue really wasn't about journalistic integrity.

All Dave had to do is be honest. If he would have disclosed his relationship with Benzino/RSO/Made Men upfront and just told people the album will be out and for them to judge it for themselves.
High profile critics always run into this problem. You gain a reputation as a trusted name. Then a friend or family member wants to use your name to push a project. You dont want to say no, but you also don't want to seem biased. It's a tough situation but it's best to split that baby
Disclose the relationship and then back off.

Sounds like the editors weren't for the culture. I remember all of this like it was yesterday. I was a devoted fan of the source for the graffiti page and the album reviews and hip hop quotable.
Only read certain artist interviews after they took away the Graff pages and all the artist that were worth checking weren't in the source anymore that was enough for me to move on.
Scratch Magazine was DOPE! but didn't last long.

When hip hop was getting big in the 90s
They was a phenomenon within the fan base. Hip Hop was all about division then. First you had real Hip Hop in one corner. Then you had East Coast west coast over there. But i guess the source kinda cultivated that. The source kinda buried some good bands like Kottonmouth Kings. Showed them no love.
