In this clip, Dave Mays talks about the lawsuit that was heaped upon him and his business partner, Ray Benzino, by his former editor-in-chief, Kim Osorio. A case where the sexual harassment portion of her accusation was dismissed but the wrongful determination part was not. He addresses the groundbreaking social impact of the case, but maintains his stance in that he was the trailblazer for women journalists during a time where misogyny ran rampant in hip hop. Mays clarifies the reason why his magazine decided to move on from Kim as the EIC and the role her firing may have played in the lawsuit that she would go on to file against him.
Dave Mays also talks about being forced out of The Source with his former Business partner, Benzino, and the role that his investor, Black Enterprise played in his demise as the leader of the famous magazine. He also talks about his legacy and the way in which his decision-making helped shape the entire landscape of rap and hip-hop news. The music businessman shares his excitement about his latest venture in podcasting and audio journalism called "Breakbeat Media" and his belief in the way the new talent on his platform will help him blaze yet another trail in hip hop.
Lastly, Dave Mays discusses an upcoming 10-part series that he is producing that will be centered around the evolution of Larry Hoover, from a gangster to an influential figure in politics and the real reason why he is still locked up.

He’s not. Just not asking question from a place of wanting to be friends. There’s only so much honesty you can have in an interview between friends. Because untimely you know what your friends do or don’t want to talk about do or don’t want out in the public. He’s asking questions from a place of not caring how the interviewee feels about him

I was thinking the same thing.
Check your facts. the case went to trial in federal court. It was not thrown out. Only 3 to 6 percent of all harassment cases filed actually go to trial. Losing on this claim only means the entire jury didn’t agree. And by the way, there were only 2 women on a jury of 9. You are so easily persuaded.

Shawn Prez is a strong interviewer . I know a couple brothers and two sistas who were at the Source at the time, neither woman ever says they were sexually harassed . Although, they all say the work environment became worse and worse in the early 2000s. I think the leadership at the Source became compromised and a lot of staff felt like it became unprofessional and vindictive place to work . Especially when they were seeing the rise of XXL and the whole Shady/Interscope beef .
I think in the pursuit of expansion they fell asleep at the wheel , thus the mass exodus of talented contributors with bad tastes in their mouth.

What the women in the Black community go through with being called out their name is the same thing that Puerto Rico was going through too in Reggeaton. The whole island stood up against the culture and hit their pockets hard body. Now if you listen to Reggeaton from the 90s to the Reggeaton from today they do not disrespect us, women. Well let me be clear, they do it still but very covertly with slang the elders don't understand or with double meaning so it's not so in your face. The Black community has to stand up against it and until we ( I say we because even though I'm P.R but I'm a brown woman and understand I'm afrolatina ) don't hit their pockets, airplay, concerts, and more it will keep on happening. Now that I'm older and a mother I understand the damage it does to the Black and Brown community. In my 20s I loved it and didn't understand why I was being called a bitch, a hoe, a slut, and getting mistreated or thought it was how it should be. Now my daughter is 20 and she barely listens to Rap because I didn't play it around her, my 16-year-old son listens to it but I explain the bullshit to him. I was very hood and I rather listen to male rap music than any other genre especially growing up with 8 brothers and all-male cousins it's still my Achilles heels but now I can barely listen to it or rather the clean version.

@@Synchronite I agree with your overall premise. But I to came from that era I'm 48 years old. But the beauty of that era was how diverse it was and originality. You couldn't deny the skill set of NWA from Cube, Ren, and DOC'S songwriting, Dre and Yella's production, and Eazy E charisma. If you wanted real raunchy stuff you had Too Short and 2Live crew but at times groups like this would still touch on social issues. We had the native tongues related groups. We also had political and 5 percent era heavy hitters. Not to mention all the wordsmiths who respected the artistic aspects of the culture. I'm grateful to come of age during these glory years!!!

Man the Hoover deal runs into what Pac was getting ready to do. Go into politics and the tremendous impact is was going to have in the way we Hip Hop heads dealt with politicians.
