Part 1: • Dave Mays on How He La...
    --------
In this clip, Dave Mays talk about his thought process for starting The Source Awards back in the mid-'90s and the intent behind wanting to spotlight some of the brightest stars in hip hop. He details the business behind landing a television deal for The Source Awards and what it was like work as the producer for the live event. Dave Mays also talks about one of the most famous moments in the history of the show when Suge Knight indirectly condemned P. Diddy for his heavy presence in the music videos by Bad Boy artists, by implying that the CEO's dance moves were overshadowing the talent on his label's roster. And lastly, he discusses exactly how that moment helped jumpstart the simmering East Coast vs West Coast beef.

I'm surprised Dave didn't notice the affiliation between 2Pac and Death Row by that point. And there's a few reasons I say that. One reason is that 2Pac had appeared in the music video for Dr. Dre & Ice Cube's song "Natural Born Killaz" where 2Pac played a police sniper. The second reason is Suge Knight specifcally mentions 2Pac in Suge's 95' Source Awards speech. Suge says, "I wanna tell 2Pac to keep his guard-up. We're ridin' with him". And the third reason was Suge put a cardboard cutout of 2Pac in the very last jail cell on stage at the '95 Source Awards. (It's probably the most overlooked clue.) Suge was dropping clues at the awards to 2Pac joining Death Row and everyone missed it. The clue in his speech. The clue with the cardboard cutout. Suge was calculated that night and no one caught it.
Suge wasn't "dissing" Puff Daddy, Suge was inviting Biggie to Death Row. "Any artist out there who wants to "stay" a star, and doesn't want to have to worry about the excutive producer being all on the records, all in the videos, dancing, come to Death Row." In that speech Suge Knight referrs to Puff Daddy, but Suge was talking to Biggie. Everyone just focuses on who Suge Knight was referring to, and no one pays attention to who Suge Knight was actually talking to.
I'm sure Suge Knight knew that getting Biggie to come to Death Row was most likely not going to happen (Suge understands contracts) but you never know until you put it out there in the universe. (That was an open invitation to The Notorious B.I.G. to come to Death Row ) Keep in mind that Suge had just watched Biggie's live performance, and Suge then got on stage right after and subliminally invited Biggie to Death Row.

Suge and Death Row have been in business before Tupac came to Death Row. The Above The Rim soundtrack was put out by Death Row and Suge payed Tupac for 2 songs on that soundtrack that came out in March 94. Tupac also had a Nate Dogg feature on a song on THUG LIFE volume 1 with a beat made by Warren G in late 94. Also Tupac in the Natural Born Killers video mentioned earlier.

After that, everything seems to fall into for Suge and for everybody that was involved.
