Story Time: I believe I actually experience Folie a Deux, and I'm glad to actually have a name for it.
Back when I was a teenager/college student, I got pulled into a relationship with a young man who had some serious pathological issues (compulsive lying, charismatic/charming when he wanted to be, extremely aggressive on the turn of a dime, lack of forethought/planning, etc).
I got pulled into his world where I started to take on character personalities, and believed he (and I, by extension) was 'special'. He used it a lot to manipulate me into staying with him and fortunately it didn't lead to anyone getting hurt but my self (and my family for worrying about me), but I've had such a hard time explaining to others what that 'state' was. It was like I lost who I was, I was that 'character'. And even if some part of me knew back then this probably wasn't true, I wanted to believe it so bad-- partly for myself to feel better, partly to make him happy.
It's what I'd describe as a cult like mentality for two. It's really easy to lose your sense of self when you get pulled into that world... thankfully, I'm a lot mentally stronger than I was at that time and can recognize that behaviour better now.
Dr. Grande, I'd be interested in your take on 'otherkin' or 'otakukin'-- they're people who believe they're either incarnations of other races/beings, from elves, unicorns and even the Na'vi from Avatar-- or people who believe they're soul bonded' to fictional characters, often based on japanese media like video games or anime. They often worry me because those communities remind me a lot of my own situation as a teen, so I'd love other person's take on it.
    Thanks for reading.

LucineBlue I also will never read another book by Anne Perry. In the movie, I hated the bratty indulgent Juliet character. As for your situation, I really think your experience is much more prevalent than one knows. How many times I remember getting swept into a whirlwind with a best friend. I finally realized I didn’t need her for my worth and although I lost my “status” I know now that I had made the right decision. These people make you feel like living on the edge with them is wonderful until something bad happens. When something awful happens, they are swept up by their influential and or wealthy family. I was an outcast for a while but I managed to not be part of her experience. She had gone on and recruited a new victim so I was blessed enough to sit back and read it in the newspaper.

I had read several of “Anne Perry’s” books before I knew about this case. After that, I couldn’t read her books anymore. I have seen documentaries on this case, and it is fascinating from a psychological perspective, and horrific. It amazes me that they were only sentenced to 5 years...perhaps because they were juveniles. The background of this case is fascinating and I think the potential move to South Africa, as well as the challenges Pauline had with her mother/family precipitated the events...as well as the really disturbing relationship the two had. As you said so well, Dr.Grande, it is impossible to tell this many years later what exactly was going on with them mental health wise (I don’t care if their relationship was sexual or not, btw) but, from my knowledge of the case...both came from unhealthy homes, developed an unhealthy, but needed for them at the the time, relationship, and it ended in tragedy. Sad case, thank you for your analysis of this case, Dr. Grande.

I am not an apologist for Perry, but I think she comes across as arrogant as a mask to her pain and vulnerability. She has developed a persona that is cool and self-centered as a defense mechanism. It is as if to say, “You can’t get to close to me or find out more about me. Keep your distance.” This persona is one she has adopted is really part of what she has had to do to protect herself. It is ingrained in her.
A bio of Perry by Joanne Drayton portrays her as warm, caring, gracious and forgiving to her inner circle of friends and colleagues. She is defensive in interviews because she has been pilloried by the press at the time of the crime and after she was unmasked.

Juliet's family was the stereotypical wealthy but cold British family (her father worked on the Manhatten project). They quickly fell out of favour w ppl in Christchurch. Pauline's family worked hard to make ends meet and Pauline's disdain for them and idealisation of the Hulmes (encouraged by them) also played a role.

Several of Anne Perry’s books are about a detective named Monk in Victorian England. Monk develops amnesia and has to discover who he is, while simultaneously hiding the memory loss from everyone else. The interesting part is that Monk doesn’t like the man he finds - who was arrogant, cruel, and universally disliked. He struggles with trying to be a better man, while no one else sees that he’s changed. I’ve always wondered how much of that character’s inner life comes from her own journey.

auntielaura@5, There is a very good book,
The Search for Anne Perry, By Joanne Drayton. The author had complete open access to Perry and her friends/coworkers. She summarizes each book, and shows the extent that Perry draws on her own experience for the book. She also takes you through Pauline and Juliet’s relationship and the crime. I found it an even-handed account of Perry’s life and the integration of her
“two” lives that came after she was “outed” by a reporter. She was publicly identified as Juliet at the time of the release of
      Heavenly Creatures. Peter
Jackson, (think Lord of the Rings) developed and directed the movie. Jackson did not intend to reveal Perry’s identity and tried to stop it. Obviously, he failed.
Drayton does not sensationalize or judge the material. In my opinion. This book is more even-handed than Peter Graham’s.

I don't know what is it about two girls bonding over homicide that gets to me. I haven't watched Heavenly Creatures, but I did watch Perfect Sisters, that is based on a case of sisters murdering their mother, and I've been weirdly fascinated with both the Parker-Hulme case and this sisters' case for quite some years.
It saddens me a lot that friendships that could've lasted for years ended up in delusions and murder. Like, talk about fucking a relationship this badly. I can totally understand Pauline never wanting to be found ever again. She was the one losing a mother over this, and taking a mother away from her sister as well.

    • @betsyred4830
      @betsyred4830 Před 3 lety +1

@@hollynotholy Because of your comment, I watched Perfext Sisters yesterday, interesting. The dynamic is totally different from Pauline and Juliet though, it was a matter of intense friendship and shared delusion not about survival from abuse from an alcoholic mother with evil boyfriends, and in the case of Payline and Juliet they really didn't see the reality around them and who was really trying to break them apart. In both case, the slipping into excessive behaviors due to the inability to cope with unbearable intense emotions is similar. Heavenly Creature is a great film, i hope you watch it at some point.

@@betsyred4830 I’m so happy that you got to watch it! Yeah, I imagine the two dynamics might be different, but I think that the lack of proper planning, lack of remorse afterwards, and splitting of the two when incarcerated is pretty close. They both got new identities after being released from jail, like Pauline and Juliet. But I wanna see the differences, too, so I’ll look into watching Heavenly Creatures and will let you know my thoughts!

It is interesting that you see Pauline as the primary psychotic one who dared with Juliette. I just read a book about the case and the psychiatrists believed Juliet was the dominant one. Pauline had a boyfriend fir a while, while Juliette only had Pauline. Juliette’s parents actually agreed to take Pauline to South Africa to live with Juliette- because they believed Honora would not allow Pauline to go. So Honora took the girls’ blame for separating them. I think The Hulmes were the most pathological of the sets of parents. They abandoned Juliette several times and were planning to do so again.
The court placed Juliette in the most awful prison. Pauline was placed in a much better place.

Another great discussion, Dr. Grande. After thinking about Folie a Deux, it's way too narrow a "psychotic disorder" to continue to be considered. There are far too many influences these days that influence people. These women were obviously in there own little fantasy world when they were teens, but adding the "actress" and "supernatural world" component really takes it to a popular media cultural level. Perhaps that's why their sentences were so short.
