This children's card game has become so complicated now that the idea of having a PhD in dueling or a duel academy is not even ridiculous anymore
Anymore? Have you done any of the later duel puzzles in the GBA simulator games? This game has always been hilariously complicated with arcane card and ruling interactions
Well, since the GX era we have had Living cards, Futuristic robots, Angry Dragon spirits, Ancient Aztec gods, Aliens, a Cosmic god, dimensional travel, Summoning method discrimination, Pendulum summoning, a guy named Playmaker, and Living AI that tried to eliminate humanity twice
You call it a child's card game? Lol what child is smart enough to figure out all the complicated rules and effect chains and combos?

in japanese they're called the antique gear cards, so i imagine the inspiration is suppose to be old antique shop curiosities. antique watches and the like.
Fun trivia: if applying real life effects, Crowler should have won the first duel vs Jaden. Kuriboh's battle damage protection effect activates once it is sent to the graveyard, which means the piercing battle damage the golem dealt should have been already calculated, dropping Jaden's LP to zero.

I thought by needing a PhD, you meant something along the lines of figuring out what does and doesn't trigger Geartown, and why modern Ancient Gear support has very specific wording to ensure that destroying your own cards does trigger Geartown.
If the timeline on the Yu-Gi-Oh wiki is true Dr. Crowler would have JUST gotten his PHD in dueling since Yu-Gi-Oh starts in 1996 and GX starts at least in 2004 and that's assuming the game didn't take off until 1996. Guy loved this game.
There is no way the wiki is correct. You have to remember Grandpa went to Egypt before that where he where he got the blue eyes white dragon from a friend. They had a duel in the past with actual cards right around the same time Pegasus went to Egypt as well, before he made duel monsters. They try to make it make sense, but it doesn't make sense. They make it sound like rare cards are scattered and hidden all over the world and it requires specials hunting skills to gather the rare sets of cards light gravekeepers. The show pretty much portrays assembling cards like ancient gears is supposed to be a Monumental task that could require a global criminal organization just to gather some of these rare cards. It's all in the show.

@@slashb7836 that's nothing. Consider the Holodeck from Star Trek. It's supposed to be very Advanced future technology and they are only using it for a single card game. The only reason they could possibly have for doing that is because of how difficult programming a hologram computer would be. Kaiba was only able to make the Duel Disk because he owned a military-grade manufacturing company. As the show has been advancing the Holograms have as well. I don't really watch the animes as much as I used to. But I did see an episode of one of the newer ones where someone could actually ride on the Holograms. And I've heard through the grapevine that crowler shows up in that same series as a special appearance. So his degree in dueling might also include Advanced programming or engineering a Holodeck.
@@Anzeth_Zeon so, in Arv-V, there's Real Solid Vision, which is holograms with mass. It's recent in that timeline (though also existed in a previous timeline in the same continuity, it's complicated), and it does tie directly into monster spirits as well. But we also know the inventor of the tech, Leo Akaba. But it's not the same as the GX timeline. A version of Academia does show up, as do versions of characters from GX to ZeXal (such as Edo/Aster, Asuka/Alexis, Kaito/Kite, and most importantly JACK ATLAS), but they're not actually the same people. It's not anything to do with GX's Crowler, and it's a separate continuity entirely. Unless this is something that appears in Sevens, but I have a hard time believing that series is in continuity with DM/GX, either, given how prominent Blue-Eyes (in non-Kaiba hands) is. As far as has been confirmed, 5Ds is the last series set in the Duel Monsters continuity (and even with that the timeline is weird and implausible).
Oh, and I should clarify, Crowler (even an alternate version of him) isn't in Arc-V. Ancient Gears are, and they're the deck used by the footsoldiers of Academia's genocidal campaign against the other three dimensions. There's only a small handful of pseudo-legacy characters each from the Fusion, Synchro, and XYZ dimensions

Fun Fact: Pre Master Rule(Master Rule Zero?) Field Spells count as being destroyed when u replace them with another Field Spell and if u do this with Geartown u can get 2 free 3K beatsticks that cant stopped during the Battle Phase
If you do play those formats, however, remember to Set the 2nd and 3rd to destroy the 1st and 2nd, respectively, before activating them, or you miss timing to Summon out the Gadjiltron Dragons. Since it's a "When..., you can..."

As someone who has played ancient gear for more then 9 years I also have a PhD in dueling

I can't remember which series it was but in one of the newer ones it was said that the ancient gears were incredibly rare and typically only used by elite duelists. The thought of Crowler actually being super elite just made me happy for some reason

In fact, he's had very many interactions with TFS in the past, and, back before he openly showed that he was a huge POS, he used to do TFS quotes at conventions. However, when it comes to Schemmel he got bitchy and butthurt about it. He stated that it "mocked voice acting". When in reality TFS inspired a lot of people to pursue VA'ing on top of a good portion of the VAs from TFS becoming professionals, and having had actually done more work than Schemmel has in recent years. Schemmel is an egotistical one-trick pony who thinks that he's bigger and more important than he actually is. Which is why he's constantly caught saying stupid shit.

The trick for most D/D/D decks is to not think of them as a D/D/D deck, but an engine. You pick your flowchat tree from the mostly generic ED monsters you want to put out and trace the play backwards to your D/D and Dark Contract starters.
"Fun" fact: in the anime dub they're called "Double D" and "Triple D"

Funny thing is that Duel Monsters in universe was created around 1994 and GX starts in 2004 meaning they started duel schools just one year after it was created if Crowler is a part of the first ever PHD class of dueling. Another fun fact is that Crowler at age 35 in the start of GX makes him a couple years older than Pegasus.

Guy at my locals ran this back durring the 5D era. He had the full deck with gear town. I beat him with my warrior six samurai\mystic swordsman deck more than a few times. But that was back when rota was a 3 and you could level up from 3 to 6 in no time flat

He should have been fired a long time ago. When he pulled that stunt, he tried to trick Jaden, but Cyrus got trick or he sealed a kid because the kid had the power to put people to sleep. He abandoned his post by letting his students go anywhere in yugi home town.
I just realized that they are like Exodia Necross; vulnerable to monster effects but protected from S/T effects during battle.
I don't normally pick up on pronunciation mistakes, but I'm afraid I have to mention this one. It's not pronounced "Ancient Gear Golem", it's pronounced "The legendary, ANcient GEar GOlem!"
I would honestly in real life spend the time to get a dueling degree rather than one in gender studies. They are both just as usless but at least there is novelty in the former.

Got a deck that uses power bond to summon Chaos Ancient Gear Giant at 9k attack and just nuke people. Assuming i dont get negated/hand trapped that is. But that applies to every deck.

In hindsight it's really funny that the teacher with a phd in duelling uses one of the most "unga bunga beatdown" decks in the entire game. The archtypal gameplan is literally "I summon a big guy, and he attacks, and no you are not allowed to respond when he does that."
I run an Ancient Gear Deck in Master Duel. It can be hard as hell sometimes but when you get the right flow going, you can pull off some game shattering moves. My favorite moment is bringing out Chaos Ancient Gear Giant and my opponent literally threw three trap cards at it before realizing his mistake and surrendering.
I built a very consistent OtK Gears deck and I piloted it to some good results in remote duels during the 2020 year, years way past its prime.

Honestly he puts it to use. Heavy Storm on his own Statue of the Wicked as well as Magnet Circle Level 2 for Ancient Gear into Ancient Gear is some smart work.
I mean in a universe where the game is as big as it is in GX (we're talking televised sporting events in stadiums), it would make total sense for someone to dedicate themselves to the game long enough to earn a phd in it. Especially since GX takes place nearly 30 years after DM and we've already got Poplar in 2024

The premise of Yu-Gi-Oh GX was just funny from the outset...it's a school...on an island in the middle of bum-f**k NOWHERE of the ocean that can only be reached by air or sea transport with no other land in sight....for the SOLE purpose of teaching kids and teens how to play a card game...that has an ALCHEMY class for some reason. Even if the manga and anime have some very different parts of them going on the school part remains and that is hilarious to me.

I’ve tried playing ancient gears- on multiple occasions. Every time I found myself losing my god damn mind. So I believe Crowler that you need a phd in dueling to operate this damn deck.

My best friend had the Ancient Gear deck and we constantly played against each other. Yah he always beat me but i never felt like a sore loser. That deck was amazing and the art was gorgeous back in the day!
Becoming a Dr in Dueling appears to require cheese cards.
Just to think of it Ancient Gears are quite strong Archetype for it's time. Prof Crowler probably the strongest Professor on the Duel Academy, Him and Jaden's final duel was very memorable.
He did hold himself pretty well against judai when they duel(the last duel where he didn't want everyone to graduate)
