  • I review the 2019 Mazda CX-5 with its new 2.5L turbo engine in the Signature trim. Having the extra power is great, but does it make it the best version of the CX-5? What do you think? Let me know in the comments below! Thanks to Mazda for providing this vehicle to review! Please subscribe for more if you haven't already! Link: czcams.com/users/subaruwrxfan?sub_c...

I installed a strut bar under the hood of my Signature and that noticeably sharpened the handling. I will also be replacing the tires when they are about half used up with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ in the 245/50-19 size. I think the biggest advantage of the turbo is the feeling of effortless acceleration. It does not feel like a 4 cylinder engine. Even with the a/c on there is absolutely no sense of being strained or bogged down from a stand still or when merging or passing. The engine has so much torque there really is no need for more than 6 speeds. Shifting is buttery smooth and downshifts are very fast. I sometimes put it in sport mode when I know in advance that I will need extra zip without downshifting for quick maneuvers in city driving. A comparably equipped BMW X3 is $20k more. And a Porsche Macan 2.0 is $26k more with the same equipment. While the nav/infotainment system is not state of the art it gives me everything I need. In many ways, I prefer it to Android Auto. I did my homework....I bought the Mazda. And by the way, the car has ZERO squeaks and rattles.

Sadly, I think their former friendship with Ford has a lot to do with their brand perception. A lot of my non car friends still associate Mazda's with being unreliable, restyled Fords, even though that hasn't been true for several years now.

Had been sold on the '17 GT AWD knowing the "consensus" was while it's engine's a little underwhelming, the transmission, interior and looks are really good. Heard about the new '19 turbo and appreciate your driving feedback regarding the 2.5T. Agree with you that it seems odd that "normal" mode actually works better all-around than "sport" mode. I also like that manufacturers are now designing turbo's to run on different grades of gas vs just premium and I appreciate you providing the HP ratings for regular vs premium and mileage.
As I'm looking to purchase a used CX5 '17 or newer, maybe my best bang for the buck is to listen to you re: the fun factor of the '18 GT AWD and go with it to gain the highest gas mileage in a AWD package.

Love my 2019 GT Reserve. With a tank of 100 octane "racing gas" it feels like it's in SPORT gearing all the time - well until you put it in SPORT and then you get warp 2. But at $8.00/gallon I won't be doing that very often.

That’s basically why I want the car but is it worth the extra money a month? The one thing I do not like about these cx5s are when you load the trunk the top of the bumper gets scratched and gouged. If you can afford the extra money for the RDX, it's better in basically every way in my opinion, although the Mazda interior does feel a little more premium in some places. The A-Spec RDX just handles better, feels punchier, has more space, a better stereo and more modern infotainment. But it is 10k more than the Mazda in that trim, so the upgrades over the CX-5 come at a cost. The CX-5 is very impressive for the price it is.

This is a thorough review that is very informative. However I believe you are confusing power with torque. What drives the acceleration of a car is the amount of torque the engine can generate. Low rpm acceleration is substantially better given the 310 ft-lbs of torque (vs 185 ft-lbs of the aspirated engine). Power however is only an indirect factor during acceleration. Where power has a direct effect is the maximum speed a car can attain, so yeah, at 5500 rpm the extra 42 bhp relative to the same aspirated engine will not feel like much for the higher weight of the vehicle. This engine appears to be tuned for that acceleration response.

It seems like they focused more on comfort and low end, the initial throttle response was actually a bit much IMO, but when you really get on it the power drops off quickly. Ended up getting a Golf R instead.

    NICE Review: 2019 Mazda CX-5 2.5T CX-5

  • @stephenhendricks103
    @stephenhendricks103 Před 5 lety

The CX-5 Signature is undeniably attractive, especially in the side profile it shares with other trims. What makes it so attractive? It's the exaggerated length of the hood compared to the rest of the vehicle, a design trick that designers have used for about a century to suggest potency and performance especially in sports and "sporty" cars. But is there a price for such a design in a "family" SUV? You betcha.
Specifically the CX-5 sacrifices interior space for exterior looks. And in "family SUV" category that's difficult to ignore. Matt points out that second row passenger room is less than competitors. And kudos for being the only reviewer I've seen who notes that with three passengers in the back seat the usb ports and heated seats cannot be accessed. He gives the CX-5 a bit of a pass on those points by saying that 3 passengers in the back seat might not be a typical need but for families with three kids or fewer kids along with one or two friends in the back seat sacrificing usb ports can lead to much whining. Again, it's a compact "family SUV," folks.
As far as cargo space is concerned Matt's claim that the CX-5 has a "Good amount of cargo space" is definitely generous compared to its compact SUV rivals. In fact at 30.9 cubic feet behind the second row, the CX-5 has less space than any other mainstream compact SUV. (e.g. CR-V 39.2; Rav4 37.4 Forester 35.4). And in total cargo space behind the first row at 59.6 cubic ft the CX-5 capacity is even more starkly disadvantaged. (Forester 76.1; CR-V 75.2; Rav4 69.8) In fact, the total cargo capacity of the CX-5 is only slightly more than a Hyundai GT hatchback (55.1) or a VW GTI (53.7). And the Hyundai is over 8" and the VW nearly 1 foot shorter than the CX-5. A "good amount of space"? Perhaps compared to the Mazda CX-3 (44.5 cubic ft) but not to other vehicles in the compact SUV class.
I found Matt's comment that the 2.5L Turbo engine has the character of a diesel in terms of power delivery on point. I had the same reaction to that engine in the Mazda6. It's definitely a good engine for everyday use but if one is expecting the typical "punch" that comes from most turbo engines, it's not there. And that's probably intentional on Mazda's part in a category where scalding performance takes a back seat to utility and driveablity.
All in all, the CX-5 is an appealing vehicle in terms of looks compared to other crossovers in its class. And though the interior materials, especially in the Signature trim, are impressive, the small sunroof and dated infotainment are negatives. But it's definitely an SUV for those whose notion of U(tility) doesn't include class competitive interior space.

Not Ikea coworker idk if you have driven any of the newer Mazda models, but they are the tightest built of all the Japanese vehicles in its class hands down. Driven new Subaru’s, Mitsubishi’s, Toyota’s and Honda’s, Honda’s are pretty close, Subaru and Mitsubishi have the worst fit and finish of those 5 easily, rattle a lot, on the Subaru Outback I drove the serpentine belt was squealing on a brand new car....

Depends what you have driven previously. If you drive a Golf R first, the Cx5 will seem slow and heavy. If you drive a mamooth Jeep Cherooke then the CX5 will seem light and agile of course.

Nice but $39k is Acura RDX territory.

Yeah, maybe for a base RDX. Build one that has at least all the goodies of a Signature CX-5, which comes with a loaded MSRP of 38K and the RDX is more than 10k higher. In other words......a completely different class of vehicle.
That the CX-5 is even being talked about in the same conversation as vehicles that carry a 10-15K higher price tag, tells the story.

exterior looks great, minus the wheels, however the interior appears to be a sacrifice I dont find too appealing

It's less powerful than expected, because it's not powerful.

CX-5 too feminine looking and barely faster then 2019 Rav4 hybrid. I'd rather go with Rav4 with look's, comfortable ride, more interior room and superior fuel economy. And doesn't ask for premium fuel.
