In the very competitive compact SUV segment, the #ToyotaRAV4 has always been the king of sales but the previous generation always suffered from being the Camry of SUV's with the boring design and driving dynamics. The #MazdaCX5 has always been the choice for enthusiast drivers and we brought together the #Mazda #CX5 Signature and #Toyota #RAV4 Adventure to find out which one of these small SUV's is the better option.

I rented a fully decked out 2019 CX-5 (no turbo) in LA last November and I loved it. The driver aids took some time to get used to compared to my 2018 Forester. I loved driving up to the lookout on Hwy 74 above Palm Desert; the twisty roads made the CX-5 feel like a Hot hatch. The CX-5 was my 2nd choice when I bought my Forester, as it didn't have enough space for me to lay down in the back (I am 6'4").

What a stupid comment. The Toyota clearly wins in design. They both drive good. None of them are sports cars. The Mazda is faster because of more power. The Toyota comes in hybrid model luxury model and off road model and sports Models all have different designs so the Toyota wins in design. The Mazda comes in no different grades it’s a boring choice. So all Cx-5 will look alike while the Rav-4 comes in cool different models giving it Character the Mazda doesn’t have

An Owners Observations: After a good offer from my Mazda dealer, I recently traded-in my beloved 2016 CX-9 ‘Signature’. As the ‘refreshed’ CX-9 is still a few years away, l opted to try a 2019 CX-5 ‘Signature’ (‘Snowflake White’), newly available with the Napa leather, Apple car play, ventilated seats, power folding mirrors & the same turbo as in the 9. I LOVE IT!!
I completely get Sofyan’s ‘grin’ & chuckle... the moment you touch the gas pedal (...not stomp, just touch), the CX-5 comes alive! Traditionally more of a ‘big car’ guy, I admit: the CX-9 is still more my cup of tea at core. BUT... the CX-5 is a great ride! And as other commenters have said: the premium fuel is truly optional. Having lived with the same engine for 3yrs in the previous car, you get the same 310 lb ft of torque with regular gas. I’ll spring for premium on a road trip!
Friday I loaded-up at Home Depot with 8 bags of mulch and 4 large plants. No problem. Yesterday we took the curved center section of a vintage sectional sofa to be repaired. It fit with no problem and there was plenty of room to spare which could’ve accommodated more stuff. So... Moving across country? That’s what U-Haul is for. For normal ‘daily-living’, there’s PLENTY of cargo space in the fun-to-drive CX-5!
7-weeks in and I’m still amazed by the level of refinement, handling, sound dampening and yes - luxury with which Mazda has infused this compact SUV. I’ll be perfectly content leasing this gem ...until the re-vamped CX-9 hits the streets! My partner is seriously contemplating trading his ‘17 Mazda3 Grand Touring sedan for the new 3 hatch this summer, making that our 5th Mazda!

The power is more than adequate and I personally don’t mind the engine noise. As a college student I wanted something reliable, safe, and great on gas and the RAV4 was perfect for me! Sofyan, you mentioned that Mazda recommends premium fuel in the 2.5T engine. This isn't necessarily true. Mazda states that at lower octane, the hp is rated at 227, despite the 310 lbs ft of torque remaining the same. At higher octane that figure jumps to a maximum of 250hp. Mazda has never said that premium is recommended or necessary, as some turbocharged engines from other manufacturers require. I know you know this however, as I have heard you state it on other reviews of this engine. Outstanding comparison review by the way.

If you are planning to lease the car you can choose whatever fits you. But if you are thinking of purchasing the car Toyota RAV4 is my recommendation out of the two. This is coming from a person that’ owns a transmissions (my specialty)/ mechanic shop for over 20plus years in Los Angeles. Toyota/Lexus cars are reliable. The parts for Toyota are cheap. So once it does break down it won’t cost you an arm. They can rack those miles up before I see them in my store for repair. Easily they can rack up 200k+ miles. Seen many 300k on Toyota brand and Lexus. Resale value is great too.
