  • This week, Mazda invited us out to Whistler, B.C. to test the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature Edition, now with a TURBO charged engine! We drove it on the road, and on an off road course, to see if the new features add up to a properly premium CUV.

When my 2013 Audi A4 ate an intake valve I had already been drooling over this car. The A4 was in the shop for 2 weeks and they split the cost with me which was nice but I was overall unimpressed as the failure happened at 60 mph driving to work at 56K miles. Really! Fully serviced and nicely treated. I've had two Mazdas before. A 1972 RX-2, and a 1996 B2000 Long Bed. My dad and sister both had a 626. A couple Hondas & VWs and Volvos in-between but took possession of a 2019 Signature 2019 CX-5 and have loved it totally as a former Audi A4 and 2008 VW R32 owner. Matches well with my wife's 2016 Volvo XC-60 R-Design, we love outings in either vehicle. I finally feel good about getting back into a reliable Japanese vehicle again. No regrets. Nice balance of performance, comfort, and efficiency!

Power to weight ratio wins races for over a century now unless aero is needed. Torque is needed mainly when accelerating on the move and especially for heavy vehicles. That's why trucks buses and boats have diesel engines and aeroplanes and most racecars have petrol ones.

I love this car! It looks acres better than Lexus models since it has a wonderfully integrated grill that doesn't look like a basking shark. Really pretty design that isn't shouty but is rather elegant for a Japanese model. I feel like Japanese cars are always trying too hard to be cool-looking since they know that they have reliability but usually are hindered by a lack of power, technology, or driving appeal like the Germans. This thing though is not like that, it's subtle, chic, with just the right amount of appeal to not look dull. The cabin is really smart looking as well and perhaps the only downside is that interior space. Overall though if I were to turn to the darkside and buy a crossover, I'm a wagon man, I would buy this one since it doesn't fail like Lexus products or even some German cars with over-styling.

recently discovered watching videos at 1.25x speed makes them more enjoyable...this is one of those videos...what was the camera car; it didn't get stuck or spin out either? the snow really shows you what part of the grill is blocked and where the holes are. I like how Mazda only puts model name and AWD o the back and leaves off the trim or engine displacement...so clean and lets the car sell it self not plastic letters on the back...winter tires? yes? what type? MAZDA, please bring your '6WAGON (with a manual) to N.American so it can DOMINATE the V60 T5 AWD, A4 Avant, 3series xdrive wagon, VW Alltrack (my favorite), and Subaru Outback. I would be in the showroom the week it arrived.

Still..AWD 6 wagon would have been super hard to pass if it were available.
With all this cross over stuff blowing up I feel like it's something they could benefit from now.

The window fogging is not all that uncommon in cars. The last 3 cars i've had, only the VW Golf 7 didn't have any window fogging in the winter. After that we had the 2nd Gen Tiguan, it had a little bit more fogging going on but not too bad, depends which settings the automatic climate controls are on. Currently we have the BMW X1 2018, it's going through its first winter and it also has fogged windows, depends if there is a lot of moist in the car or the outside air... i guess some cars are more sensitive to it than others... I also tried all kinds of settings on the ventilation.

Does the Car’s computer automatically sense the octane of the fuel, or do you have to select an 87 octane “mode”?
I think it’s interesting that as you start to price out the Mazda it starts to be high $30K money which is exactly where the Acura RDX starts as a luxury brand with a higher output Turbo 4 cylinder and with non-braking based SH-AWD system. Then you can also throw in the NA 6 cylinder boxer Subaru Outback also with its class leading Symmetrical AWD

I was all set to buy this car until I found out that Mazda disables the touch screen when the car is moving! That feels like a really big drawback to me and has caused me to start looking at some of the CX-5's competitors. I get their explanation for why they do it but I just can't imagine using Waze (via CarPlay) without being able to use the touchscreen. I've read that in previous firmware versions, you could disable this "feature" via the test mode interface but apparently that's not possible anymore in the current firmware version. I wonder if a Mazda dealer would be willing to do it for you? Something tells me no because Mazda would probably be quite unhappy with the dealer for doing it. :-(

      do you Touchscreen your Desktop,
or Laptop? No - you use Mouse.
      That's the premise here:
      use the stylus knob
      (mouse equivalent here)
      in center console
      (it is placed right
      beside/beneath your hand,
w/ your arm on armrest - so:
      Ergonomics!
      This is quicker
      and less labor intensive than
      1) reaching, and then
      2)tapping a screen thats 2 ft away
      from your resting arm/hand.
      You wouldn't put your mouse
up on a shelf away from your hand would you? Because: Ergonomics.
      Anyway the stylus knob spins,
      taps 8 directions
      (left, right,up,down,4 diagonals)
      and also can be pressed
      (down, like a large button).
      Hope that helps :)

We’ve had 3 CX-5’s and really like them. I think that your issue with the defroster was that the air conditioning compressor wasn’t on. You can run the defroster with it turned off on the Mazda (and I prefer it this way). Some vehicles will turn it on regardless of whether the AC button is lit once you select a defroster mode. My biggest beef with our current 2017 is that the Soul Red Paint is the worse paint I’ve had on any car. It chips, scratches, and scuffs so easily. We have 17,000 miles on ours and if you look at the hood it looks like the vehicle has 100,000. Our other vehicle with 10,000 miles on it doesn’t have one chip and they are driven in identical environments. The good news is (based on my experience with our other two Mazdas), it is only the Soul Red. It’s a beautiful color when new, but it will be our last Soul Red Mazda.

We tried a few different things and the car stay fogged all day. Including the AC options

Throttle House Interesting. I figured you guys would know how to operate a vehicle! Maybe the interior of the vehicle got too wet from having the doors open filming during a snowstorm. I will say that IMO, the Mazda has a fairly small A/C compressor to probably save gas. If I had to nitpick again on something (besides the Soul Red Paint), I’d say the air conditioning could be a tad stronger.

We were in literally the worst case scenario for fogging windows. 1C and wet snow. So it’s likely a rare problem anyway.

You have to unlock the car doors and then the trunk can be opened while the car is on. Weird, I know. Took me while to figure out on my 2017 cx5. Also have issue with defrosting the front windshield in very cold temps. There are no side vents and the Center vent doesn't reach the corners of the windshield.

Your content, wit, shooting and editing is very good as is the duo format. I see your channel growing fast. Great job guys. Can't agree with the front end on this or any other Mazda in the last decade however. Mazda started the hideous "huge black grill, punched in the face look" that many other car companies mysteriously copied. Never liked it and never will. Big grills are ok on a Kenworth, not on cars. Lexus has some good looking cars until you get to the front... BMW hasn't followed this trend fortunately.

      It's a 2.5L 4 cylinder Turbo engine.
It's basically the current 2.5L skyactiv but it doesn't have the 13:1 compression ratio the non turbo has.

As good as the turbo CX-5 is, I don't understand why someone would buy this or any other CUV over the Stinger and Stinger GT AWD. The Stingers are cheaper, more luxurious, more power, far better handlers, just as practical with the hatch design and remember, sitting higher up is not actually safer.

    • @mgisairo
      @mgisairo Před 5 lety

Trauma Dynamics I wouldn’t buy a stinger because of the low sitting position. Some people just can’t drive sedans and this makes a better compromise for those coming from bigger trucks.

    • @TheStigHCE09
      @TheStigHCE09 Před 5 lety +1

The Stinger does have a premium feel to it but honestly Mazda does it better, and the Stinger is just flat out not as capacious.

I tested a stinger and it's not as spacious or practical. Defibrillator felt tighter, harder to get in and out of and fit a family comfortably. Fun and cool though!

Great! So you can toast an engine in less than 18,000mi... our 2017 cx 5 gs 2.5l only got to 18,000mi when it lost 4 quarts of oil and spun bearings. It's funny because the dealership knew all about the failed oil pick up pump issue but never told us. We found our the hard way and will never buy another mazda again in our lives. A premium product doesn't fail with such low mileage. In my eyes, new mazdas are garbage.
