2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature | Blurring The Luxury Line

  • For 2019 the Mazda CX-5 has improvements all the way around ranging from new GTR and Signature trim levels, enhanced chassis, powertrain, and interior materials. This CX-5 turbo provides more power than you need and a very smooth transmission on top of that. The Mazda CX-5 blurrs the line between luxury and mainstream with this top of the line Signature turbo trim. The only features you might wish for in this class that are missing include a foot activated liftgate and panoramic roof. Overall, the CX-5 is almost perfect but loses in the practicality department due to smaller cargo space and interior storage...but not by a lot.

    I waited until they came out with the signature series and bought it recently. I am 100% satisfied with this car and really enjoy the driving experience. Some things Mazda need to add/update: 1. Proper TPM system to display tire pressures, 2. Cup holders and system control knob should be switched as they are awkward if you have a water bottle, 3. Door arm rest is too narrow, 4. The parking brake is set to automatically turn on when you turn off the car, 5. Remote start, 6. Foot activate the trunk release, 7. Hydraulic hood supports, 8. Ambient lighting is very weak, 9. Improve the Apple Car Plan connection speed (takes about 2 minutes sometimes), finally, 10. Passenger seat memory settings. These are minor points, but, would really up their game to a different level. I enjoyed one comment where someone priced a BMW X3 with same options and it cost $19K more. Keep up the good work on the videos and in spite of my criticism here, I love this care so much. Thanks again.

We considered it time to replace our nearly 10 year old Subaru Outback 3.6R Premium but the CX5 hadn't the power to compare with the Subaru till this turbo model came out. I’ve always been a fan of the CX-5. I drove a first gen model for a while and my sister still has her first gen. Mazda hit a home run with the 2nd gen and addressed most of the shortcomings I think. I wish it was a little roomier and the cargo area was a bit larger. I would give up a little driving dynamics for a panoramic roof though, especially in the Signature. The interior is beautiful and I agree with other’s that say it rivals the small luxury SUV’s. Overall, I feel it’s the best looking and most premium of all the compact SUV’s. If I were looking to buy, it would be between this and the Forester. I would take this over the BMW, Mercedes, Audi compact SUV’s as well. I think it looks just as premium as they do for less money and a lot more reliable. Great review!

    Hey Nolan, Great Review on this very pretty CX-5. You mention old days in the winter with small inclines and up hill starts. Man oh man with everyone in my area of Massachusetts living in the second most hilliest city in the world next to SF. I remember so many cars and trucks sliding back down or through intersections. We didn’t have radial tires and a lot of people couldn’t afford Snow tires. But you know what? It didn;t stop anyone from going out doing their thing. We didn;t have this “PANIC” we have to day when the 4 letter word is mentioned. And today we have at least Front Wheel Drive and mostly 4WD on the sport utes and people stay home and everything closes now. So different. Today our super market will be mobbed as we are expecting 4-8 inches this afternoon and night. I need to shop for the restaurant and I won;t be able to get in and out with out fighting mobs of people and parking so far away. It’s media that scares these people to death. “Don’t go out unless you absolutely have to” “good day to take off from work” All the schools in the area are already closed for a storm starting at 2pm. The build up of the storm on the media for a week in advance gets people scared. My favorite is a few times we had nothing happen at all and everything was closed for nothing. Lol

    I have the Signature trim and it has so much torque that 6 speeds is plenty. This trans is a durable and proven design and I would rather have it than have a new unproven trans with 8 or more speeds. I bought it because it's powerful, fun to drive and has enough versatility and storage for a single guy like me. I priced out a 2019 BMW X3 with the exact same content and the price was $19,000 more. The BMW has an 8 speed trans and perhaps a better nav. Neither is very important to me. As far as the nav goes I don't need the latest and the greatest. I just want it to help get me to my destination. While the Beemer does get better highway gas mileage, but it requires premium fuel which eliminates the benefit.

I think with the seat cushion at it's lowest position most tall people will find it to be comfortable. However, before exiting I do lower the seat to the lowest position to keep from hitting my head the next time I get in. I then use the seat memory to restore my favored seating position.

    Of the various models in which Mazda deploys its turbo4 the CX-5 is probably the most appropriate. It also works well in the Mazda6 but the competition from the Accord's 2.0L turbo and the Toyota V6 is much tougher in that category. And in the CX-9 the turbo4 is up against V6 competition from virtually every midsize crossover except the Subaru Ascent. Considering that the CX-9 is among the largest vehicle in its class, that's a significant deficit.
    The turbo4 in the CX-5 gives it a significant advantage over its competition in terms of performance. But that advantage comes at a price, of course. Driven conservatively, the fuel economy isn't bad. But take advantage of its performance and you'll pay for it at the pump.
    The weakness of the CX-5 is the "U" in a "utility" vehicle. It's nowhere near as cramped compared to the competition as the CX-9 but the CX-5 isn't just "slightly smaller" in terms of cargo space. The Honda CR-V provides about 25% (!) more cargo space than the CX-5's 59.6 cubic feet. It fares better against some other rivals but the CX-5 still offers less overall cargo space than any other compact crossover.
    That may not be a problem for those who want the look of a crossover but don't need the space a "utility" vehicle typically promises. And the CX-5's Signature trim is undeniably attractive. So it comes down to a battle between looks and functionality.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  Před 5 lety

      Excellent points and very well said! I agree I. The turbo pairing with the Cx-5 being the most optimal. And the cargo space....if only they could give us more of that utility without sacrificing too much design. Maybe they’ll do that next redesign..who knows. Anyways thanks for writing and thanks for watching! 😁👍

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 Před 5 lety

      @@PrimeAutotainment Could be but I doubt it for a couple of reasons. First, the distinctive overall design of all three vehicles (CX-9, CX-5, and Mazda 6) results from an extremely long distance from the A pillar to the front bumper combined with the ratio of that distance to the rest of the vehicle. It's a design trick that automotive designers have used for nearly a century to suggest a vehicle's potency and performance, factors appealing to consumers, especially male consumers.
      Second, the vehicles' relatively large (and long) engine compartments result from the massive exhaust manifold located behind the engine. That, in turn, is necessary for Mazda to achieve the turbo4's diesel-like low end torque rather than the typical peaky torque curve of a turbo engine.
      At 199" long CX-9 is already among the longest midsize crossover. Providing more interior space would be difficult without adding significantly to that overall length. The CX-5 could be extended to improve interior space but that would mean turning the CX-5 into the CX-7, a "tweener" size crossover that Mazda already sells in non-North American markets.

      I’ve never driven the FWD only model, but unless you encounter slippery situations, you’ll hardly know the difference. The AWD is FWD biased so it’s primarily a FWD vehicle anyways, unless it needs to power rear wheels for added traction. Plus...you’ll get better efficiency with FWD 🙃

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  Před 5 lety

      The Avalon smoothed our bumps better and overall felt softer and a bit more planted. The CX-5 still feels really well planted, especially with handling. It’s ok for softness and ride comfort, but not great. Certainly not bad either though. It doesn’t allow big stuff to really get rough like some vehicles but you can “feel” the bumps and imperfections a little more

With a tank of US $8.00/gallon 100 octane racing fuel this car is QUICK! But at that price I won't be doing that very often. LOVE this SUV.

I think storage is ok, but I would still take the storage of the Rav for practicality reasons. I also like that Apple Carplay has been added. They are more than a gimmick and will certainly add to future styling of cars. Cargo volume the Toyota does win. Practicality is a bit more dicy. I like the 40-20-40 seats as I can carry 4 passengers and some long items. I particularly like the cargo cover attached to the rear hatch in the Mazda.
