- This video gives an overview of Tamiya's CC-01 in stock trim and shows how it can be modified and what hop-ups you can add to make it perform better as a crawler. Two cars are featured, a Landfreeder modded on a tight budget and a Unimog that has been extensively modified. If you enjoy this video, please like, comment and subscribe to support my little channel.

You don't need the extra gear to lock the front. Just put the third gear in between the other two.
Thanks a lot, Avery Coffman! Now that you mention it, it seems blindingly obvious that you do not need the extra gear to lock the differential in the front!!! I never thought about it before, but it makes perfect sense - cheers for pointing that out, and I hope others might read this thread and benefit from your wise words - in fact I think I need to pin it at the top of this video's comment section! All the best, and thanks again!
Mark...
Hi guys, I freaking love my CCO1s, I’ve got around 6 or so, my favourite one is worth £450 to me as it has every upgrade you can imagine fitted to it. I got a complete alloy upgrade kit from Thailand. It has alloy everything, upper and lower arms, cvd drive shafts and alloy shock mounts, it even comes with alloy front and rear drum brake hubs with the 12mm hex built in. It also has a new rear heavy duty alloy axle, with an external diff locker, and the 4 link axle parts and rear shock mounts. It came with every nut, bolt, washer, screw and even rubber covers for the cvds. I’m sure I’m missing out some things too. It’s got a 3 to 1 gear reduction, 55 turn motor, front mounted battery, front, centre and rear skid pans, alloy wheels with Tamiya soft rock block tyres, white barrel springs, rear suspension hop up drop parts, alloy front bumper and skid pan, roof rack with spot lamps, 25kg steering servo, alloy steering kit, front and rear diffs locked etc etc etc.
I just love the Tamiya CCO1s, even though they are trail trucks and NOT crawlers. The best and easiest thing to do is lock the diffs when building it, and fit a bearing set , change the springs and tyres as the springs are rock hard and the tyres are the same, hard! Lol and you will have a competent trail truck. Sorry for being long winded , you can see the alloy kit in my CCO1 video. This video is awesome guys. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Hiya Mikey, after reading this I just had to take a look at your tricked-out CC01! Man, it sure is a wee beastie! Love it - I left a message on the vid. Yeah, it may not be a crawler, but you made it the best you could, I bet it's so much fun to run. Thanks for your kind comments and all the info in your message, it was great to read my good friend - take it easy, mate! :-)
That looks amazing man! Keep it up
Many thanks for the good comments mate - glad you liked the video!
Great comparison video.
Will help with my Bargin Bucket restoration project.
Great to hear! Good luck with the project, hope it goes well, my friend! :)
Marvelous! Been looking forward to this one. I like them both. Your Landfreeder is much like mine apart from the paint job and front bumper. We even locked the front diff the same way - we probably saw the same vid on youtube :-) (DrivenRC or something like that?) I went for some similar tires (by Tamiya). Not the softest too, but affordable too. Great comparison, Mark. And great filming Alf. Really good overview of the CC with these two different versions. Many Thumbs up!
Mikael - many thanks for the kind words - yes our Landfreeders have turned out very similar, he he - they say that great minds think alike :-) ... and we may well have seen the same CZcams video (great thing this CZcams community isn't it?) As usual I will pass your compliment on to Alf - I am so pleased when he takes part as it adds a "chatty" element and he reminds me when his daft old dad has forgotten to mention something important (he's a very clever kid!). I also like the way he slowly pans the camera around and zooms in on the parts we are talking about - I don't give him any direction, he just does it automatically. As you can tell, I'm a very proud father :-)
Cool video mate. Good comparison and thanks for the mention etc... As for the wheels they are good and add some unsprung weight just glad I don't have to change the tyres very often as to do that means undoing every single one of those 2M nuts and bolts. As for the tyres I don't think those are Proline chisels. If you check the side wall I think it does say what they are but I can't remember now. The Proline chisels are on my Toyota Hilux Bruiser.
Dude - many thanks for the comment - not to mention the loan of your beautiful truck!!! I seem to remember you struggling with the standard bolts snapping and having to buy replacement allen bolts?
Sorry about getting the tyre make wrong (there were sizes printed on your tyres but no name) and I remembered you talking about the chisels - never mind mate - I put it down to my old age :D
The solid rear axle with the front independent suspension is typical for actual asian and european SUVs back then. Tamiya's first model with the CC-01 chassi was, I think, the Pajero. Then the Wragler, and the Isuzu Mu, of which all, except the Jeep, use that suspension combination. I've taken a look under a few real Opel Frontera Sport vehicles, so I can confirm this. What annoys me is that Tamiya allowed the Jeep Wrangler to use the CC-01, a wrangler has always had both its axles solid, just like Land Rover and any real offroader.
Not to pick on the CC-01, it still is a very capable off-road chassi, just that it doesn't correspond with the Wrangler body.
I totally understand, Tomas! Yes, the CC01 really does echo the design of a lot of real trucks! I also get annoyed when Tamiya, usually true to original design, use a chassis not appropriate for the body they choose - e.g. the new TC 4WD for the actual RWD Formula E cars! But most of the time they are spot on. Yeah, the CC01 is a great off road chassis, I really enjoy mine. All the best my friend. :))
I was looking at cc-01 videos was thinking about getting one I want to build a tamiya crawler and sure enough one of your videos popped up awesome my friend I want the unimog 👍😀
Hi Brent! Glad you caught this video then my friend - I really like the CC01, but in stock form it is a bit limited when it comes to crawling - easily fixed though! Yeah, the Unimog is a great kit, I want one as well! Cheers Brent! :))
@@MarkBryanRC I think I'm going to build one for stevo d 313 build off 9 that is coming up should be fun I did the mf-01x beetle for the last one
I look forward to that my friend! :-)
Very nice video and mod overview! I've installed a 80 turn motor. I usually drive trail and crawler trucks with 3S but the CC-01 is still fast with the 80 turn motor on 2S. :)
Remote Addicted - thank you very much for your support and good comments - really appreciated ! I am only using the old NiMh 7.2v batteries at the moment so I don't get so much power but it is enough for the CC-01. I think if I used a 80 turn I would not get enough speed with my batteries, but I think I might try an 80 turn when the weather improves - thanks for the feedback - do you have a first name I can call you by? - cheers from Mark :-)
Sure! My name is Charlie. :) 🤘
Cheers Charlie - it's great to meet you mate :D
Great to meet you too :)
I thought those landfreeder tyres looked a bit beefy going up the beach wall in Wales on your recent vid - now I know why, a huge improvement. Some great tips in turning this one into a crawler. It's a shame Tamiya didn't do this in the first place - they don't do too many crawlers, I can only think of the 'Rock Socker' is it ? Lovely job your friend did on the Unimog too - magnets for body clips is an excellent idea. Great stuff.
Hello mate! Thanks for yet another interesting comment, it's great to get feedback from other like-minded enthusiasts!
Yes - Tamiya did go a little "middle-of-the-road" with the CC-01, it's neither one thing or the other in stock trim. To be honest, its more of a basher out of the box, pretty quick even with the standard silver can, and way too fast for crawling. If you went brushless and grippy tyres on offset wheels you would have a rally car beater! Tamiya do a lowering kit for the CC-01, short shocks, dished chrome wheels and road tyres - but strangely they don't do a crawling kit - maybe the marketing department missed a trick there!
I'll pass on your comments to my friend Rob - he'll be chuffed!
That unimog is sexy guna have to get one me thinks wicked vid ✌
Sorry for the late reply! Thanks - yeah the Unimog is a great CC01, a very cool looking body, especially with this 2 tone colour job! :)
Hey mark proline and PitBull company makes 1.9 tires that fit the cc-01 that’s what I used on Land Rover 40 it raises the ground clearance they are softer tires to
Hi Bruce - thanks for the info, very much appreciated, I'll check them out for sure! Best regards from Mark... 👍😎
aye up mark, just added Tamiya barrel springs to build, got em off a pal of a pal still in packet unopened at a bargain fiver ! couldn't say no really at that price ! :-))
Hey Russ - you jammy so-and-so!!! Sounds like a right bargain - they don't come around too often - I'm sure you will put them to good use :-)
Hi Russ - I think you all know Pete Wylie - a fantastic member of our RC community - Sorry to say that he has had some awful bad luck - whilst charging a LiPo in his hobby room, it set on fire and has demolished his RC collection and nearly burnt down his house! He has had to move into neighbours in the meanwhile and he and his wife is suffering from smoke inhalation - please visit his channel and send messages of support - I am sure he will appreciate that we all wish him and his wife all the best for the future - best regards, Mark...
Great video Mark. It's really good to show what you can do with a small budget to make it a better off roader and then show what you can do if you want to throw a bit more cash at it. I love the way Rob has done the body on his. Both great looking cars. One thing I did on mine was to put a bit of metal across the back which protects the bottom of the shell at the back. I just used the extra back body posts that are meant for things like the Pajero (I think) and put a sort of homemade bumper across. It doesn't really show but like I say it protects the body and I also put some side bars on from a Traxxas Slash for the same reason. So do you really notice that Rob's one performs better out in the field with all the fancy bits ?
Hi Pete Wylie RC videos - cheers for a great comment! Rob's shell looks great in the sunlight with that two-tone pain job - pretty special. Great info on the strengthening at the back - the Landfreeder shell does overhang and gets caught on steep descents so I'm sure that mod will help - I'll look at my parts box and see if I can do that too! Yeah, on the trail Rob's rig does out-perform mine, more clearance and better grip, you just can't beat quality hop-ups with home made parts however hard you try (but they do come close!!!). Thanks for the feedback on a long video on a Sunday night :-)
Hi Rob it's the E3 parts 10005523 that are the unused body posts. I just put a simple L shaped length of metal with holes across and held it on with body clips but I think you'll be able to do something a bit better with your metalwork skills. Alf made a good point about the new skid plate leaving the light cluster on the front a bit exposed. Not a good idea for me with my habit of driving RC cars into things, I need a great big springy bumper !
He He Pete - it's catching!!! You said "Hi Rob" ...and I called Alf "Rob" at the start of the video!!! (Derek KINDLY pointed that out with a LOL in his comment!). I think I get what you mean - pity we can't attach photos to these comments! Are they the ones that fit horizontally pointing backwards? I feel the need to get the alloy plate out again...
As for the front, yeah Alf's comment was good (takes after his dad!!) and I will look at fitting maybe some stiff foam or something to the top of the alloy bumper, just below the spots - there's plenty of room and should be well clear of the floor. Many thanks for the ideas mate :-)
Mark Bryan RC Oh yeah sorry Mark ! Don't know what I was thinking. We are at that age where we just say various names until we get the right one ! Yeah it's those backward pointing body posts that I used. Like I say I'm sure you can devise something suitably elegant yet functional :-)
Mate! I love your comments - you always make me laugh - yeah - I do exactly the same too - ...and walking into a room only to ask myself "why the bloody hell have I come in here? :D
Thanks for the info mate!
Cc01 is awesome 👍
Thanks for the comment, J J! Yeah, totally agree the CC-01 sure is an awesome Tamiya, fantastic all-round ability! :-)
@@MarkBryanRC not sure if it's being discontinued, but the Yeah Racing! Cc01 steering set is a great upgrade. Hot Racing has a very similar set.
Also the Junfac chassis skid plate works really well for lower COG and to lessen the chance of hang-ups out on the trail.
Great info J J - thank you very much! Other viewers may also find this info very useful, it's great to share with our RC community! Nice one! :))
I have almost that identical truck with the Unimog body so much so in fact that the body holders on there or identical it's crazy adjust how identical that these two trucks are and her completely different builds I'm located in the USA I will put up a video if I can I mine Unimog Tamiya cc01
Wow - that sure is a coincidence! Well, you know that they say great minds think alike! Haha, not my mind though, as the Unimog is my clever mates truck! Yeah, a vid would be great! Thanks for visiting and commenting, much appreciated! :-)
Hi Mark & Alf (or is it Rob lol). I enjoyed this a lot. I have had my CC-O1 Pajero for nearly a year now, and my initial intentions were to buy everything Rob has on his Unimog chassis. But I got a bit of a fright when I priced it all up. So all I have done is put in a 55T Axial motor and a Hobbywing Quicrun esc to slow it down. It was fully ball raced when I got it. I have decided that all I want to do now is get some better tyres. Pete Wylie has recommend Fastrax Kong 90mm tyres, which I may buy. But I am interested to see how you rate your KRT's. (could you pop a link up for those please). The reason I am staying mainly stock, is I have really enjoyed the challenge of running it mainly stock, because it is a different experience. I even still have both diffs unlocked. I have my Axials which are obviously designed for trailing, climbing etc, and thought that I didn't really want to spend that amount of money to turn my CC-01 into something similar to what I already have. If I didn't have my Axials I probably would have done it. But I find it a lot of fun trying to take a route with the CC-01 that the Axials have done, and if I manage to complete it I get an immense feeling of satisfaction. If I don't complete it, I try a few more times and then move on, having learnt some more about the capabilities of the two different set ups. That's one of the things I love about RC. Every day you can learn something new. Thumbs up my friends : ))
Hey Derek - some fantastic feedback and a great addition to our little discussion about the CC-01, trailing and crawling. Sounds like your truck is of a similar set-up as mine and Nordic RC Visions - Mikael's trucks. I totally agree with your sentiments about spending money versus a challenging driving experience. I think Rob spent well over the cost of the kit on his mods (great if you can afford it and kudos to him for assembling such a beast - I love it!) But you have the bonus of having some really capable 'purpose built' crawlers and what you say about the CC-01 makes even more sense.
I got my wheels and tyres from www.bsbspares.co.uk but I just checked and they are not in stock any more, so I looked on eBay, see below:
The closest I can find for the tyres I have used are now £12.98 for a set of 4 on eBay (free delivery and if you look you can get either white or black wheels included) HERE: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4pcs-RC1-10-Rock-Crawler-Car-White-Plastic-Wheel-Rims-with-Screws-Rubber-Tyres/172521638728?hash=item282b174b48:g:qCEAAOSw8b1aJmKm
I hope this helps my friend - and thanks again for the brilliant feedback and the support from your thumbs up :-)
Thank you very much for the links Mark. I appreciate you looking for an alternative for me : ))
No worries mate :-)
I love when your older Videos pop up on my feed. 😀 I don't hear much about Alf lately... Hope He's doing well. Still top tips for the lowly CC-01 Chassis!!! 👏👏👏👏 I do want the rear Link Kit.... OR make them. I've got all the bits. I spent so much time and money on the front, I never got around to the rear.
The "Drop Kit".... It's OK, but there's better ways to go about increasing Rear Axle movement. OMFG Dude!!!! Steve (shen RC)! Claiming HE invented the Drop Shock. 😱😫😮 In the Forums, and even on CZcams, He has been the Arrogance that the World accuses all us Yanks of being!! 😫😤 I've been in the Hobby a LOT longer than he has, but I don't go all around fluttering my tail feathers, even to people who are clearly more Talented than I am. I still try to be polite though....
He's the type of person who wins at everything and he's popular in spite of himself!! I worry that upsetting him could irreparable damage to my already damaged reputation.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't cared if I'm Cool or not in a long time! I'm concerned because two people who I've never met, and don't even know well online, have LOST me more than half of my friends. Because of what the Internet has turned many people into, they will believe any asinine thing a Basement Warrior tells them, without any real evidence. 😔 That's the darker side of what was imagined was going to bring the World closer...
Thanks for watching the older stuff, Carmine! Yeah, Alf is just fine, thanks. He hasn't got time to spend with his old man at the minute, because he is spending every spare moment preparing for his high school final exams - and his results are fantastic so far - I'm really proud of him - he's a clever cookie! He has promised to come back with a bang in the summer and help me and Rob by driving and filming, so we should have some great vids coming later this year!
As for Steve, all I can say is that he was one of my very first subscribers and has supported me with loads of comments, watches and likes. I'm grateful to anyone who helps my little channel and try to keep all of my comments positive. So I am going to keep up that tradition and just smile! :))
I know there are basement warriors out there, but as I've said before, my policy of just ignoring them has worked well for me so far - I have been upset for a while by a few comments, but as soon as they are removed and blocked, I soon forget about them and just focus on the great people out there supporting me (like you!), and focus on the next video I'm going to make. Thanks for being one of the good guys, Carmine.
Got no real beef with Steve, He's been good to me. It's just the T-Rex sized ego!!!! 😱😛
Alf is definitely where he SHOULD be right now! The success stories of tomorrow are going to require the smarts AND the credentials. I'm happy to see your kid is working towards being another shining star, and not another full time GAMER! You're rightly Proud. I wish Alf nothing but the best.
And I look forward to seeing him back in the Videos as well.... But much more urgent priorities now!
Thanks Bro! I will pass on your kind comments to Alf! :))
hi mark n alf, another great vid, been busy doing other stuff for a while, but I'm back ! had 425 unimog for a while, so time to get it out of box n do a build, I'm changing stock motor for a hpi 55t, waiting for stroke extension link to come, for shocks (can fit at later date) replacing bushes for bearings(rc bearings.co.uk) also will be locking front n rear diffs, also putting hi torque servo with metal gears in, still awaiting beadlock wheels n tyres to arrive, but can start build n fit other parts later, I was looking at replacing steering set, and servo link and steering rods, how does yours perform on standard steering and servo links, as a lot of people say when you crawl them you get slop in these areas of build ? and its easier to replace from scratch when building rather do later ? anyway keep up the good tutorial vids, catch yer soon, regards russ
Hi Russ - nice to have you back! The Unimog is a great kit, and I like the body shell too. Sounds like you are doing all the best mods - should turn out very capable off-road. Mine is not too bad with the standard steering components mate, but steering lock is VERY limited - made worse by locking the front diff. Rob's Unimog is slightly better, but it's a lot of cash to spend on all the alloy parts to gain only a little improvement - most of the time you wouldn't notice the difference. The metal gear servo is a big improvement though.
One thing to look out for is when building the rear axle - both Rob and I found that there is a lot of free-play (side-to-side) in standard setup = the axles move in and out by about 3mm! This can easily be sorted by installing a couple of washers on the axles to limit the movement - I'm sure you will see what I mean when you build it - if not - give me a shout and I'll try and send you some pictures.
Anyway, great to read you and thanks for the comment and support mate :-)
no probs mate, if its slop in rear axles, seen another vid on here, were they use the plastic bushes to take up play in it,
Nice one Russ - seems you have it sorted! Have fun mate!

Nice guy's, try out 80T motors they work wonders in the CC-01 chassis, also tires do make a huge difference I run the losi rock claws on mine that came on there mini rock crawler I found them to be the best performing tire that's proper size for the CC01 but I don't know if you can find them anymore. and lastly see the rear drop unit I invented this I posted it on message boards way back in like early 2000 and tamiya must have seen it and then finally made them...I later put a video showing how to make one on my channel many years later. Have fun with the cc01's there my fave trail runner trucks! 👍😊👍
Hi Steve - thank you so much for such an excellent comment and helpful tips - very much appreciated. As for the rear shock stroke extension - cool you thought of it first - respect to you - pity you didn't patent the idea !!!! Anyway, good call and yes, we will be having lots more fun with your fave trailing trucks :-)
👍
Hey Chris, how are you mate? Your support is greatly appreciated as usual - many thanks for the thumbs up - my channel is still going thanks to people like you :-)
No worries
