  • Welcome to my video that shows how I prepare a RC Lexan (polycarbonate) body shell for the paintwork. It involves a lot of cutting, sanding and masking, I show how to cut out the difficult wheel arches and masking the windows on a Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7 WRC body shell. Eventually it will be fitted to my Tamiya TT02 Type-S.
    Thanks to Rob Brennan for his help filming this video. You are a star my friend.
    In this video, I also say hello to my good friend Derek, from Holly Hill RC. Please visit his awesome RC channel here: / @hollyhillrc
    I hope you enjoy the video! Thanks so much to all my subscribers, I appreciate your support enormously!

      That is high praise indeed, Mikael - thank you so much! That's the beauty of this little hobby, I'm still learning, but I enjoy sharing what I already know, and I know Rob feels the same. Even better is that it is fun to do at the same time! Thanks again, your comments are always truly appreciated my Nordic friend! :))

    My hat goes off to you, Mark - I doubt I´d ever have the balls to mask windows on camera! At least, with Rob there, you didn´t have to worry too much about keeping the work in frame, but it was still a brave thing to do.
    I´m looking forward to seeing the next stage - have a good weekend, both of you : )

      Thanks for the lovely comment, Del. Yes, I did think I was asking for trouble doing this on camera, but I was a bit lucky this time! So many other times I have had to reposition the masks many times before getting it right. But I wanted to make a how-to video, so I really just had to give it a go! And you are spot-on, it would have been so much harder without Rob on the camera. It also helps to have someone to chat to as we film! Thanks again my friend, and I wish you a great weekend, too! :))

    Another great video. Just a little hint. I find that the tamiya paint cans are a great fit to sand the wheel archers. Just wrap the wet and dry round the can. Keep the videos come from you and Rob!

    A guy at my local hobby shop showed me a windshield and rear window masking trick years ago when I was into slot cars. You cut about a 3mm strip out of the vertical centerline of the mask's paper backing with a hobby knife. Peel that out, and while you position the mask, the backing and that small gap will prevent the sticky area from contacting the window. When you have it perfect, run your finger down the gap and stick the mask. Give it a shot and see what you think.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the great tip, it really makes sense. I have tried removing a strip from the middle of the window mask, but I didn't make it thin enough to prevent it from "grabbing" as I tried to apply them. I'll remember this for next time - cheers, Kevin! :)

Great "Job" Mark and good evening .It is very clear to see how much experience you have, and very nice, that you share it with us.It is very difficult to work on a body shell ,especially the window masks are makes me crazy every time ! I never use a marker pen for the Window edges and i dont no why .This is a great idea and next time i try it. I really like your build Videos and wish you a nice evening Mark.....Great camara work Rob.

      Thank you Harry! I have done about 17 Tamiya bodies now, but I don't think it gets any easier or faster each time I do one! Yes, the window masks are tricky, especially the big one for the main windscreen, but at least it is possible to reposition it if you get it wrong. Glad you picked up the marker pen tip - I hope it helps the next time you do a body shell. Thanks so much for your encouraging words, my friend, I hope your week is going well! :))

    Hello mate. Well you are a braver man than me to do the cutting and masking on camera! I must say that I've never bothered to sand the edges of my lexan bodies. I just cut them out and that's how they stay! I do the drawing round with a Sharpie thing first though as even with reading glasses I can't see the flipping line. Anyway good work in passing on you skills. This is what CZcams is for. This and watching a cat being startled by a courgette. Hope you have a fine weekend planned. I have the house to myself tonight as Saran is on nights and then tomorrow I'm out drinking with my mate (the one who drinks cheap lager). I have found an event at one of the pubs where they are playing old and new electronic music so right up our street. Meantime I'm just getting ready for an RC session in the new forest with Ric tomorrow morning. We have both now got budget crawlers and Ric has also bought a Firestorm so will be bashing all of those. Have a good one mate 😀

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Hello Pete. Not sure about brave - but probably a bit mad! I was lucky that it went so well, but I had to do it on camera really for a "how to" video! I only recently started sanding the edges, it doesn't take long really, and makes a big difference - but sometimes I wonder if it was worth it when I start bashing the hell out of them! I do think the smooth edges help stop the lexan splitting or tearing though. And yeah, my trouble is also my eyesight these days, just can't focus well any more!
      The drinking session sounds perfect for you - you must try and convert your mate to real ale! Enjoy the RC session, thanks for the kind words and hope the heads not too thick on Sunday morning! :))

      @@MarkBryanRC yeah I guess you have to actually do the thing you are talking about. I think it helps that Rob does the camera so you can concentrate on what you are doing rather than worrying about whether it's in shot. Had a great day in the New Forest with the RC's. Tried out the crawlers which were good fun on the hilly muddy terrain and then the Firestorms on the flatter bits. I was running my Firestorm on 3s which is mad. Just on the bus heading into town. Hopefully the thing I'm going to will be good. Surely they can't go wrong with a bit of Depeche Mode etc.? Hope you're having a good weekend. Laters mate 😀

    Glad you're getting on with the Body Work!! 😎
    You and I have the same method of applying Window Masks. And cutting Bodies! 6 of one, half dozen of the other when it comes to cutting Bodies with Scissors or Score and Snap with a Sharp Blade...
    Personally I am much more comfortable with Lexan Scissors. Mine are worn out, but I have Surgical Scissors, curved and straight, that my Friend who is a Nurse got for me. They look like the ones you used here. I should give them a go. Maybe I don't need expensive Lexan Scissors!! 😱
    Great job Mate 👍👍😎!!! Got the sneak preview, that Evo is going to look awesome!!

      GUILTY of the same cliché!! 😛 It's sincere though.
      I will still try a new thing or two, but things like cutting Bodies with Scissors just works! You get it. I'll hazard a guess that the Surgical Scissors I've got could work BETTER than the "Lexan Scissors". I need a Body for either me Buggy or Rally Car, so I can test that theory! 😛😉😎

      Hey Carmine. I've been really busy this last week or two editing my latest balsa wood plane the Vought Corsair, but have ended up with 18 separate vids totalling over six and a half hours of footage (done a lot of talking in this series) so rather than flood my main channel I am creating a new one dedicated to my plane builds. I'm almost ready to go live with it just doing an intro video now.
      I agree those surgical scissors should be loads better as they should be made of the very best materials.

    Shopping list: curved scissors and Tamiya bravery pills :) What an excellent way of doing wheel arches ! I'll be using that technique in future, rather than scoring the shell with a craft knife and then snapping away the excess. Very informative and well planned out video - that wheel arch preview was a great touch. Look forward to the spraying and sticker episode. Thanks for the steady hands Rob....👌.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Nice one, Cosmo! Yeah, a decent set of scissors makes light work of the lexan. I wanted to put the preview in to prove that the technique works! I already used the finished body in the thumbnail, as I thought a photo of a bare plastic shell would be a bit of a turn-off, so it was OK to put a preview in the video. Thanks for the fantastic support mate - hope the weekend's going well :))
