  • Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World. Not at least because of it's only 1777m long runway, but also because of the 4-lane Winston Churchill Avenue, which is crossing the runway. This is very unique. My 4K Video shows Airbus A320 jets of British Airways with flights from and to London at the Airport including a 'nice' crosswind approach. Captured on 09.04.2016.
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar at the foot of which is a densely populated city area, home to over 30,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.[10] It shares a maritime border with Morocco. Under the Gibraltar constitution of 2006, Gibraltar has limited powers of self-government, with some responsibilities, such as defence and foreign relations, remaining with the British government.
In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. During World War II it was an important base for the Royal Navy as it controlled the entrance and exit to the Mediterranean Sea, which is only 8 miles (13 km) wide at this naval "choke point". It remains strategically important, with half the world's seaborne trade passing through the strait. Today Gibraltar's economy is based largely on tourism, online gambling, financial services and cargo ship refuelling.
The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations because Spain asserts a claim to the territory. Gibraltarians rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a 1967 referendum and, in a 2002 referendum, the idea of shared sovereignty was also rejected.

I have landed a Boeing 737 many times at Gibralter airport and don't consider it dangerous. The road crossing only caused me problems once when the trafic lights on it failed and I had to climb away from 600ft and circle round the rock and make another approach. They had got the police out to close the road this time. Strong winds from the south causing eddies round the rock can close the airport. Its a while since I retired and I don't know if the Spanish are still doing their best to make things harder.

I love Gibraltar and we visit regularly. Fascinating, beautiful views from the rock and a place to totally relax. Have never had any problems flying in but bad weather can make landing difficult and some flights are diverted to Malaga. The short runway and potential for strong cross winds means that only certain experienced pilots can fly there.

When I was there there was a huge union jack on the top of the rock where it belongs. @@rataxv20 Yes! Some people call it Spanglish 😂. A lot of Spanish people also live in Gibraltar and a lot of Gibraltarians live in Spain. Most Gibraltarians speak Spanish fluently but personally I only know a little bit. :)
Oh and also most people know each other so it's nice when you're walking in the high street (where there's usually loads of tourists, except not anymore of course) and you see your friends walking by. 😁

Great video. I lived there for 10 years back in the '50s & '60s. Just a small point. The name is Winston Churchill Avenue, not street. That was my address back in 1966 when the name was changed from Road to Spain to its current name after Spain closed the border. This was after the first referendum rejecting Spanish sovereignty.

Check out Google Maps to see where they are building an underpass at the eastern threshold of the runway for vehicular traffic. Pedestrians will still walk across the runway when it opens.
The runway was built during WW2 for bombers and fighters when the surrounding land was just open space. Since then the towns have been built right up to the runway and the traffic volume across the runway is massive hence the need to retrospectively build an underpass.
