- In today's episode, we head to the Baltics to explore the beautiful city of Riga. The Latvian capital is famous for its well-preserved historic old town and we were very excited to FINALLY make it to one of our closest neighboring countries!

Despite Latvia being so close to Sweden, we'd never made it there until now. Maybe that's what happens when something is just too nearby and...familiar?😌

We are Oskar & Dan, two boys from Sweden who decided to change the course of our lives, drop out of university and live life full-time. We're planning to visit every country in the world before we're 30 with an initial goal of 100 countries before we turn 25. By the time of posting this video, we're both 24 :)
Latvia was country #77/197🌍
Thank you for watching!🙏😍
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!❤
If you're new here, we're Oskar & Dan, two Swedish boys of 24 who decided to drop out of college to pursue our goal of visiting all 197 countries on the planet🌍
We're able to do so thanks to the money we make from CZcams (Dan has a bigger channel called Nonstop Dan) and Oskar is also a music composer. You can check out his stuff on Spotify, Apple Music, or anywhere else you listen to music as “Oskar Kappland.”
We're so grateful that you're here to follow our journey around the world! If you want to continue following us, consider clicking subscribe and hitting the bell for notifications😊
See you around the world!
It's so sad that Latvia and Sweden is stones throw across the sea away from each other and yet we are so distant that it took soo long for you to travel here...

I'm an American and I am planning a trip to Latvia for next May! This is the best video I have found to see what is in store for me in Riga, I cant wait to keep following you guys and see all the other places you go! You guys are awesome
Thanks a lot Michael!! Enjoy your trip
You should definettly buy chocolate and chocolate candies called "Laima" and "Riga black balsam" atleast to try😆. You can buy a really cute small bottle of this balsam so you won't waste money on big one. (In case if you don't like it) I personally haven't tasted it (well I'm not an adult yet) so yeah. Also you should visit an restourant called "Lido" food in here is delicious😇

Most of Latvian are cold and bit rude, the 40+ yrs old ppl don't speak English, and they will lose their patient when hearing English. You could read some reviews about Latvian in Quora. Btw I am currently living in Riga, I am so disappointed about Latvia.
Next time you visit you should explore some other cities, as the vibe is so different. Must see places in Latvia: Kuldīga, Sigulda, Cēsis, Venspils, Liepāja, many of the old castles - Koknese, Rundāle, and many many more. Although, it should be said that you would need a car for it.
P.S It kind of pains me to see people visit only Riga yo understand what Latvia is, as it is the nicest city in all Latvia and is different from most other cities, as it is the most cullturally rich, diverse and, no doubt, beautiful, but it does not reflect the reallity. Of course, if you have only one or two days, then Riga is definately the place to visit.
Hi, Haralds 😅
Cēsis, Venrspils, Liepāja, Daugavpils and Balvi are the only must see places in my opinion.

you were wondering why is it called Swedish gates - its because they were built at the end of 17th century when Riga was occupied by Swedish power
As a latvian, im happy that our country starts to get more attention from people. Your video was very cool and I wish you good luck. Sadly you saw only capital city of Latvia, cause there's a lot more interesting stuff outside of Riga.
The vibe of the video was amazing 🤗! Loved the journey you took us through in Latvia! I never expected it to have so much historic architecture and cobblestone streets! Its so pretty! I wish I could've seen an aerial view of the place! Loved the vid and I look forward to the next one!!

Anxiety is too “modern” word for this street in old town. I would rather say it is ‘“alert” or “alarm” street.

The Swedish gate gets its name from when the Swedes occupied Riga and Russia (I think?) tried to take it back. Instead of attacking, they closed off the cities connections to the outside and so they couldn't get food and other supplies. The Swedes had a few months worth of food but when it ran out they all had to leave the city through that gate :)
Thank you for providing that history!🙌❤️
Elisa vK don't write smth.you have no idea about. During those times there was nothing to do with Russia and none parts of Europe belonged to it. It's strange also that you Swedish guys don't know history even of your own country. Actually Riga was the biggest city in Sweedish Empire(after Polish-Sweedish War)and part of it nearly for 100 years (1629-1721)Today it's not hard to find info about places, countries, cities so I'm not going to educate you more...

I’m shocked at their mistrust of our vaccination passes 😱 Oskar and Dan! And very sorry you had to go through that. Very smart of you to take a picture though. 🤓
You guys are so much fun! Happy travels! 💕👍🏻
US vaccination certificates are seen as shady in most of Europe. That is common practice here. Peopel have gotten deported for it, even if their certificates are in order.
I guess it's more that people are not really used to having US vaccination passes here, although I guess plenty Americans still come to Riga, but I don't know. Maybe extra suspicion that the guys are two young Swedes (maybe they thought they are on booze trip as some do, due to lower prices compared to Sweden) with an American pass :D Not sure.
@@lkrnpk Nothing to do with it. It' s a general European law that most US vaccination certificates are simply not accepted. To travel in Europe you need a Europeean vaccination certificate. Those are the rules. If you don't have it, obviously you could run into trouble.
@@MarijaEnchantix But that's a nonsense. What should they do now? Get 2 more shots in the EU now?

Super excited you visited and liked my hometown! Thanks for a great vid and nice B-rolls! Great job getting all that together this fast!
But I have a problem with all of this. You claim you have visited Latvia, when you actually had a stroll through a center portion of a capital. That's a bit misleading.
I regularly do solo roadtrips with my car and once I was stuck in Warsaw due to technical reasons. Well, there were no actual trouble, but my cars gearbox started to make "expensive" noises and I didn't dare to drive further away. I spent more than 3 weeks in Warsaw and would only say I know two or maybe three neighborhoods of the capital, not the entire city and definitely not the entire country. I haven't seen your other videos yet, but I highly suggest you settle somewhere for a week, get to know locals, familiarize yourself with several phrases of local language... It's a completely different experience, much more fulfilling and rewarding!
Great content!

Trauksme in Latvian actually means "alert". And "brīvība" means freedom, so Brīvības iela is 'Freedom street'. Back in Czars Time it was Alexander Street named by Czar Alexander obviously. In 1919 during German occupation it was Wilhelm strasse. During Soviet occupation Lenin's street (Ulica Lenina). Every other from freedom represented some occupant personality, so nobody of those guys were keen in freedom as You can see.
The Swedish gate is where supposedly Swedish army went in to Riga. There's a legend, that Gustav Vasa lost his riding boot while passing across mote there.
"Swedish times" are considered most mild in Latvian history for Latvian peasant. While still being serfs in German, Polish or Swedish mansions, Latvians were better off during this time. Some were able to proof themselves in crafts, trade, science etc.
Some Latvians served in Swedish army, even rising to officer ranks, such as captain and so...
Thank you for all these insights!
Latvia is a great place to live. Safe, beautiful, cheap enough and friendly. Im proud of my folks to have kept it so nice and clean and modern. Malachi. Especially Riga. Latvia is very small and population is 1.89mill. Winters are full of snow, and summers are very hot. For personal reasons I had to leave my home country 15 years ago, but if I could I would move back. Rn, Ive built my life elsewhere.
You can tell Riga was in the Hanseatic League from some of the buildings. They reminded me of Lübeck, Bremen, and others.
