    Today we bring you our final travel experience from last year (2023): our epic fail of a trip to a local island in The Maldives😅🏝️
    We chose the island Dhigurah in the South Ari atoll for its ideal location for whale shark and manta ray snorkeling. Unfortunately, the universe had other plans for us...🙃
    We’re Oskar🧔🏻 and Dan👱🏻‍♂️, and we believe that anyone regardless of who they are deserves to live their dreams! For the past nine years, we’ve continued pushing boundaries by traveling and living all across the world, including places like Uganda, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia. In 2022, we reached a huge milestone by visiting 100 countries and we’re now on a mission to keep sharing our journey and hopefully make the world a little more open, compassionate, and peaceful along the way❤️
    Thank you for being a part of the journey!

      The word "fish" can be used as both singular and plural when referring to multiple individuals of the same species. However, when referring to different species, "fishes" is used. For example, if you have three salmon, you would say "three fish." But if you have a salmon, a trout, and a bass, you would say "three fishes," as they are different species.

    An American living in southern Sri Lanka here. I can confirm that the monsoon season normally ends in the second half of November, thus leading to "The Season" in time for the holidays. This year has been very strange though; the monsoons lasted about a month and half longer than usual. Here in Galle we had sunshine today, our first all-day "Season"-like day in the past couple of months. So I'm not surprised you guys had the weather that you did.

    The reason why Maamigili has a regular airport is because of Maldivian business tycoon Qasim Ibrahim who founded the Villa Group, which owns the airline you flew on among other things. He grew up on Maamigili, and so he wanted to develop the infrastructure and facilities of the island and make it an airport big enough so planes from abroad visiting his resorts will be able to land directly on this airport instead of having to stop off at Malé. And yes, tourism has been eating away at these islands). Poor water quality, contaminated lagoons, vital coastal vegetation cleared which leads to erosion, the government would rather lease its islands than take good care of its people. An ex-president went to jail because of island lease bribery.

      I went in 2017 and again last year. One island had developed a lot in that time. The biggest difference was they had actually made the island bigger (extending the bikini beach), and more multi story hotels were being built. I'm glad I went and saw it how it was the first time.
      Even on Maafushi I flew my drone and could see they we making a new island just nearby, so weirdly they are actually able to make some more land to build on. I think for some places that might work and be ok, but for others it would end up ruining what made the island more special/unique.

      Exactly! They had a wish and belief about what the trip was going to be like. Whale sharks and manta rays aren't going to be found every day. If that was their dream they should have come for a week, booked a local boat, and snorkeled (free dived) every day looking. Even when it was raining! The negative attitude took away from the trip! They should have relaxed, swam at the beach, and tried to be more adventurous!

  • @AverytheCubanAmerican
    @AverytheCubanAmerican Před 3 měsíci +17

    Shame you didn't get to swim with whale sharks! But yes, whale sharks are absolutely incredible creatures! The whale shark is enormous and reportedly capable of reaching a maximum length of about 18 meters. Each whale shark has a unique pattern of spots and stripes, sort of like our fingerprints. These patterns help scientists keep track of their movements as they migrate through tropical waters, including along the coasts of South Africa, western Australia, Thailand, and Mexico. Whale sharks have tiny teeth that cover their eyeballs, probably to protect the peepers from the harsh ocean habitat. One fish had over 3,000 teeth around its iris! A whale shark’s mouth has over 3,000 super-small teeth arranged in more than 300 rows.
    The whale shark is a filter feeder. It feeds on plankton including copepods, krill, fish eggs, Christmas Island red crab larvae and small nektonic life, such as small squid or fish. It also feeds on clouds of eggs during mass spawning of fish and corals. The many rows of vestigial teeth play no role in feeding. Feeding occurs either by ram filtration, in which the animal opens its mouth and swims forward, pushing water and food into the mouth, or by active suction feeding, in which the animal opens and closes its mouth, sucking in volumes of water that are then expelled through the gills. In both cases, the filter pads serve to separate food from water.

    That's too bad guys I feel for you both. I went to the Maldives 3 times and I did not see a whale shark at all. But thats nature I guess. I feel you went a bit early in the season before the weather could settle down, so I'm not surprised you had the weather you did. I went in February and March and the weather was perfect every time apart from a few isolated thunderstorms. I was very sad to see how generally unkempt the island was. That was not the Maldives I experienced, nor would I want to. Its amazing how developed the general infrastructure has become. I was there 30 years ago and Male airport was basically a large barn with no motor vehicles in sight. It was pretty funny at the time because there was an irate gentleman demanding to know where the nearest car rental office was!! Each time I had a beautiful experience, but I'm not sure if I'd want to go back. Great video guys and I'm looking forward to see your travels in 2024.

    December is actually the “monsoon changeover” month where it is starting the process of turning to dry season. The monsoon changeover months tend to have a lot of unsettled unpredictable weather. February and March are by far the best months weather wise with least amount of rainfall. Travel agents will tell you November to April but nowadays it’s really Feb/March for Maldives

    I stayed on Dhigurah last year in February and ,though I cant deny that there is lots of building works and the "town" looks a bit scruffy, the weather was perfect and the beaches had no seaweed . Even the "swampy" area didn't look as bad as in your video . The local islands are all rapidly developing, some badly like Maafushi, others quite well like Ukulhas who are trying to develop sustainably . There is little regulation to prevent high rise buildings though and that's the worst thing you want on a paradise island . On a final note my first trip to the Maldives was also in December at a super swanky resort costing thousands a night and it rained for 5 out of the six days I was there and I had a miserable time ! I have had 2 visits to local islands and much prefer the real Maldives to the pristine resorts .

    I went to Dhigurah and took the night speedboat to the island. It was the bumpiest ride ever! I was just relieved to be on dry land. OMG, when you walked over to the other side of the island!! The Debbie Downer/zombie apocalypse music you chose made me laugh out loud--in commiseration, of course! I was in the Maldives just a month before you, and I have to say I was super worried about the weather as well. I also got a fair amount of rain--maybe for about half the time I was there--but because I was at a resort and my main goal was to unwind and relax, it didn't affect my vacation quite as much as yours! Coincidentally, I know someone who was there in July--which I thought would be the rainiest time--and she didn't get a single cloudy day during her stay! Go figure. Thanks for sharing your experience though--and not just because I really wanted to visit a local island and wasn't able to, so I was glad to live vicariously through you! Sorry to hear everything went haywire on your trip, but everything is an experience, right? I had been wondering though how one gets to Dhigurah and what travel without the seaplane would be like, so thanks for sharing that as well! And as someone who gets tremendously motion sick, my sympathies to Dan! My doctor had prescribed me Meclizine before my trip, which worked pretty well (though I wasn't on seas quite as rough as yours). I had also brought the Reliefband with me, which I was told works better than Seabands for nausea. I didn't use mine, but I thought I'd mention them for your next adventure, Dan! Hope you both get a chance to see whale sharks again in future.

You went during the rainy season and January is the dry season. I've seen your video and it doesn't seem like the same island I was on. We were able to walk from Dhigura to the other resort island, and it was best to do it in the afternoon when the tide is low.
