Behringer UB-Xa Sound Exploration (no talk)

- Disclaimer: This video was made for nerds. No talk, no explanations, no cuts, just a sound design session. I started with an Init Patch and just tweaked and played the synth to explore some sounds and functions. You're invited to listen and take a look over my shoulder if you're interested.
It's a kind of experiment. Let me know in the comments if it's top or flop.
Honestly I'm not certain if it's useful, maybe I'll take it down later on.
In case you don’t know: I also made a walkthrough video on my channel, going through most of the functions.
Recorded dry without any effects, but I used a little volume automation to tame the dynamic range a bit. - Hudba

Top 🔝
Top ! 👍👍👍👍
Truly, Behringer exceeded my expectations on this synth. *Applause*
I completely disagree, that clicking sound makes it sound like a different synth
Tom...this is insanely good...wow! Back in the day I had an Oberheim Matrix 12 but this thing, dare I say it, sounds even better.
The UBxA has that magical, emotional, shimmery sound we all love from Oberheim.
I almost can't believe that Behringer were able to do this at this price point....I mean, 16 analog great sounding voices and poly aftertouch...that is just ridiculous!
That it sounds so good without even using effects is amazing.
Thank you so much for your contribution and this video!
Greetings,
Pieter
Maybe the best video about this synth because of showing the sound creating and tweaking process in absolute detail. And boy, does it sound good! Rich, fat, warm, no distortion from the filters, just pure delight!
Love synth videos like this. Just pure sound exploration. Lovely.
Sounds great! Mod matrix is insane, so many possibilities. Loved the PolyAT to LFO rate
Good god, these are the hard Synth sounds I was hopeful it would generate ❤that's it, I'm completely on board now
I don't think i've ever heard such analog premium tones for 1300E, truly amazing!
An oberheim matrix 1000 was multitimbral , took less space, the same price in 1988 , 1000 patch memory and sounded equally good
@@cnfuzz Your price comparison is nonsensical. Allowing for inflation, £1000 (UK) in 1988 is worth about £2700 today. For your price comparison to mean anything, something costing £1000 today would have had to cost around £370 in 1988 to equate on value... this alone makes the UBXa a bit of a bargain.
Matrix 1000 had 12 DCO's/6 voices... UBXa has 32 VCO's/16 voices. For a keyboard player, effectively having 2x8 voice synths with split and layer at this price point is incredible. I have various 6 and 8 voice synths and when playing 2 handed chords, the difference in voice cutoff is more pronounced and irritating in my 6 voice synths.
UBXa has a 5 octave keyboard and a great user interface (knobs could be better quality, but remember its price)... Matrix 1000 has minimal buttons and relies heavily on menus - and was compact because of cost-cutting pressures.
I'm not Behringer's biggest fan but this looks and sounds amazing for £999 (UK).
@@cnfuzz Matrix-1000 is not multitimbral. It sound ok-ish but this sounds way better. The M1000 is also a pita to program as the editors to it sucks and there is no way to do it from the front panel.
@@cnfuzza Matrix don’t even have knobs, no talk about 16 voices, multi timbre, Poly AT and it is discontinued. That’s not a good comparison.
@@cnfuzz the matrix 1000 is very kool, but you're wrong. this practically makes buying an (aging, outdated) matrix 1000 altogether pointless. unless you just like it's specific character and want a rackmount synth with no parameter controls. there are options for controlling it either through software or hardware, but they are buggy.
also while we're doing nonsensical comparisons, the matrix is only 6 voices while this is 16. that alone makes this argument moot. and finally, for the space saving point, this is supposed to be getting a desktop module eventually.
Absolutely fantastic, thank you, Tom! Now I can’t leave my studio - it’s that good 🙏🏻
Excellent demo !
Yes, this is good stuff. It’s nice to see some tweaking. Not just people showing off keyboard chops.
Thanks for your feedback. As I mentioned in the description, it is more of an experiment. Maybe a bit too long, but I will think about ways to make it more interesting.
Man, sounds so good 🤩 Had decided not to buy more synths but this one is a must-have
Amazing your skills you are the captain of the synt
Really cool
great sounds 👍
Tom, GREAT video and sound design! Love the slow pitch LFO’s around the 4:30 mark; LOVE the LFO voice panning past the 8:00 mark!
Love your comment below as well regarding comparing the UB-Xa to the OB-X8, they’re definitely different synths.
Got mine on preorder w/Sweetwater of course, BUT…I’m very inters in the alleged UB-X, if it’s a closer clone to the OB-X, that is to say, SEM filters, good stuff!
Liked and subbed!
Sounds like an OB. They nailed it.
Tom Noise is Good noise! 😊 Received my UB-xa last Friday. Di light full hours in sound design search will be mine :-)
💕💕💕💕☔️☔️☔️☔️ really like it. I have an OBX-8 + 2 SEM’s. Now I ‘ am waiting 4 the OBX/ MATRIX 12/SEM behringer….
Just ordered one.. it wil be an agonizingly long month of waitng coming up :)
unreal that it actually doesn't need effects.. This thing will stand the test of time. If your still dead set on getting the Oberheim OB-X8 after hearing the videos of this you literally arent even listening.
To be fair, the OB-X8 gives you more choices on the filters and it has discrete VCOs. I wouldn’t compare these directly. Different sounding synths.
This sounds like pure analog sound but obx8 sounds like candy.. If you can afford it then it is worth it.. If not this will do!!
Hi, I like this idea for videos. Joe doria music has made this kind of video for the Behringer Poly-d, you can learn so much from this, thanks for this 👍
Really nice demo. It sounds amazing.
Do you know if it's possible to change the lfo speed with the poly after touch?
I suspect not, but guess modulation amount is possible?
Thanks. Sure, that's possible. I did exactly that at 6:30 in the video. You can see me assigning the polyAT to mod lfo rate and playing it later on.
@@tomnoise23 Wow, that's super cool. I'm sold!
👌🎧✨🤍💫 Merry Christmas and a happy new experimental year 2024 🎅🏻🎄🎅🏻🎄🎅🏻
Likewise 🫶
If we have been REALLY GOOD boys and girls?!? - Do you think Santa will bring us one?!? 🙂
Merry Christmas! - Judson & Buddy! - God Bless You ALL !!!
Happy Holidays and fingers crossed that Santa is reading this 😉
Arpeggiate
Use the Arpeggio and then play the synth. instead of playing with the left hand and limiting yourself!
I like almost everything about this synth except Uli’s initials!!!
I thought the same 😂
@@erik_gerhard Nothing a piece of ducktape can't fix :)
Does this mean its available to buy now?
yes, it was available in a small batch at thomann. I think the next batch is on the way.
I'm on pre-order with Sweetwater in the US. They say early Q1 delivery
Me too, can’t wait!
In the UK at Andertons after January 20th 2024.
It's better to use a fixed focus for the top camera :)
Good point 😀That's my lousy webcam ...
Anyone else getting high off listening to this?
Cheap drug? Why not! 😂
I will get my regular dose of dope next year with this synth. I decided to wait for a few more months.
That clicking sound makes it very annoying.
Sad..
What are you referring to?
