That looks a hot mess, You ruined the beautiful brick with white sludge that will now attract smoke and dust from the fireplace, you know why they make those with rustic looking brick, right? Dear god, these gullible new age hipsters...
Very Helpful, and looks pretty simple.
Yes it’s not hard just takes a little patience but we’ll worth the results. It brighten up our home so much

Thanks Debbie, Thats a great option for apartments!
Stunning!! :-)
Great technique! We have a brick fireplace/wall/mantle that I always stare at wanting to make it over. But we are renting so it's stayed.

Yes it did! Thank you!
Cool
So u can basically get the sponge and rub the bricks that u what less white on them ? What if I used a sand paper if I had to much white when it dried up ?
I love it. I tried doing this to a brick floor. The mortar wouldn’t stick. Does anyone have any tips on how I could get the mortar to stick to a existing brick floor?
Thanks, very helpful video, would this work on brick pavers too?
I believe so because that’s basically the same thing
Wow!!! I love it ,my fireplace looks like your, would love to do it ,then you!!😊😊😊😊
I hope you do! its amazing how much it helped our room look better!
I used thinset on a test area and it’s cracking in the mortar lines.
wow! you are brave!! the process looked so scary but it turned out amazing!!! For only $20!?!? tfs💜
Thank you, a little time and little money make a big difference!
I have a remodeling company in Orlando fl we do that and white wash often... I realized that after you do your mortar and it’s completely dry you should seal it for durability. You can use a low sheenor not shen at all ... after you do that you will be able to wipe that any time even with water... amd it won’t change the looks just the durability
Oh thank you. Many have asked about this for there exterior and that will be very helpful
I am a contractor for over 10 years and I am going to ignore my painter and go with your advice on the white mortar vs white paint. HD sells cone-bags to fill the grout lines specially design for that.
Thank you
oh thanks, I think it looks way better and gives a rustic vibe.
Can you show what can mortar u used? (Brand on bag) thanks
Awesome job Emily!! Girl, you rock!! Your wall looks fantastic!! Thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas and DIY's!! 💕💟💕💜
do you know if you can do this on a brick floor and how might it wear if it was done?
You probably could but you would need to seal it. I’d say paint the floor you could get a similar look
It's crazy that you did this...I was so going to suggest this to you!!! 😂😍😊 The only reason I didn't is because some people are really attached to the red brick color and I didn't want you to feel offended! I LOVE LOVE LOVE how it turned out!!! ❤️ So happy you made this choice to update the fireplace! 🤗 Have an awesome Saturday!!
Thank you Justin, your very sweet! I loved it for awhile but really started to hate how dark it made the room feel. I hope your day is going great too!
QUESTION: Can this be done on exterior of the house? If so what are the differences in materials and upkeep?
I believe so since its mortor. The interior upkeep is nothing so far.
I love the German Schmear look, just wondering if it is a dust collector?
Thanks, no it’s not. I vacuum the bottom of coarse because of my dogs but no it’s been just fine
Does it feel dusty to the touch?
Help! I tried this last night, only thing I did different was I added paint (form seeing others that did) but this morning all of the mortar in the cracks are cracked. I only did the sides because I was afraid to commit before seeing how it dried. I’m glad I didn’t do it all but now I’m not sure how to proceed. Did you have issues with cracking? Could it be the paint? Could it be because it got so cold here? I figured since it was inside and the heat was running it would be ok but it did get very cold.
I had some cracks in the ground lines but. I thing alarming. I didn’t do it with paint so that could be the problem. I filled and pushed mine into the grout lines really god so less chance of shrinkage
What color are the walls in the rest of the room? ((We recently limewashed our brick wall and are looking for a new paint color for the adjacent walls). Thank you!
I did a bright white and then recently when to Valspar Swiss coffee
I need help! I recently bought an old farm house that has very thin brick/concrete flooring. I wanted to take it out and replace it with porcelain tile but contractors tell me my floors are way too uneven to do without completely starting with bare floors and new plywood. Can't afford this, so I'm thinking my only other option is to paint them. Problem is, the floor is really rough on the feet. I love the look of the German Schmear and I think it would look amazing in my house, but I fear it will make my floors even more uncomfortable. I find a lot of videos showing how to paint brick, German Schmear, etc. but I can't find anything that is flooring like mine. People just show wall transformations. What do you think?
Oh I'm sorry, it can be a frustrating process. I personally wouldn't add this to my floors only to area that arent used much like wall. do concrete floors and stencil them or vinyle and stencil them if wood and tile are to expensive.
❤❤❤
Momma From Scratch How's it a few months on? Do you find its dropping dust?
no not at all. its clean so far!
Good question, good answer.
Great video,, but sorry i was looking my wall look as yours from the beginning, how i do that???
You can buy red bricks or find salvaged one and if you want faux Home Depot sells the panels
@@MommaFromScratch thx, new sub
Wonder if this can be done on a faux brick backsplash. 🤔
I’m sure it can
Nice look there! Just a word of caution: when you use these mortars, you want to avoid breathing the silica dust, which you generate when pouring it out of the bag and mixing, and when you scrape off the excess from the brick. Always wear a decent respirator (cartridge type). While it's wet you don't need to worry, just when it's gone white. Happy DIYing.
Can you use this same technique for stone on the exterior of a house?
I believe so but you made need to seal it not sure 100%
Ok thanks!
Do you have to seal it if you use a wood stove?
I don’t think so but o don’t have a working stove either.
What color are the walls in this room?
They are white by valspar
👍🏼❤️❤️
Has it become crumbly at all?
no not at all. it looks the same it did the day it dried. very happy with the product
Mi scrivete in italiano i materiali che usa? È calce?
Looks beautiful and you provided great instructions, but unfortunately this is too messy for my OCD. I didn't realize you actually use mortar to whitewash. Guess we'll be living with our outdated brick. ;)
You could try paint watered down though I think
@@MommaFromScratch Thanks! I did see it is possible to achieve a similar look with paint. :)
OMG why! The natural brick looks so much better.
Italian flare? This is what a bunch of kids back in the days in Middle America did with lime dust and chalk to protect there houses from storms dear.
This looks so good! I think I could do this technique, but I keep reading that unless you’re using actual lime and chalk to limewash then the bricks can’t breathe and you end up with mold problems behind the bricks, which can happen with painted brick even if it’s diluted. It’s hard to know who’s right.
we didnt have this issue but its pretty easy to do, glad it helped a little
Mortar will allow the brick to breath. A solid coat of paint will hamper the breathing process.
J. Landry Thank you!
Mortar and thin set are not synonymous.
Invest in a $5 grout bag.
I don't know why people keep using some methods that makes it look like a bad diy project gone wrong. It just cheapens the look of your house.
I hate it, sorry to say, thanks for sharing, but the before was much much better.
Looks great!
thanks you!
