Looks great, I think that is a fantastic way to update the look of a home. Works wonders to un-McMansion ugly houses too when combined with other changes.
Great video; I am inspired! I can't find that specific type of mason cement, lots of "quikcrete" options out there. Would Sakrete, Type S Masonry Cement" be equivalent (as that is all that I have available)? And is that Grey that you used or do you have to find a white (because I cannot find white anywhere)? Thank you!
Looks great. I tackled this on my floor to ceiling fireplace. I wish that all the "pros" would mention that it isn't as easy to do when your brick is rough (deeply pitted) and the grout lines are deep.
I did follow your recipe, plus followed the tip from the guy at hardware store, adding a dash of liquid dish soap; Not sure what exactly it does. I applied to interior brick walls, and it looks fabulous!. A bit messy, but the end result is wonderful.
Thx for this instruction. I’m about to give it a try on some fireplaces. I want to clarify something. You mix sand with the mortar? Just making sure because the other videos I watched, they didn’t mention that. Ratios again, please? Thanks again!!
Ive got existing 20 year old german smear on my house and some of the color in the motor has been washed away by rain in places. Any idea how to fix that. The motor is still there its just grey now, all the white is gone
I'd like to do this with my red house to hide all the efflorescence and dirt from 50 years. But the grooves is very deep between the bricks 13mm (half inch) , can it work?
I have a very ugly brick building.. the bricks are purple, red, orange, green, and brown... LOTS going on. I want to do this but my brick is EXTREMELY textured so I'm not sure if this will work.
@@ShellSellars-Smith yes I have. Not sure if it was because they did a very light wash. However I had it done to my previous house and it did not get washed away because it was a heavy layer of mortar.
It just seems that scraping off smear kind of defeats the purpose, I don’t like the brick at all. Can’t it just remain without the scraping? A little help please.
Hi thanks for sharing this video! The house turned out so beautiful. I would like to do this german smear in my exterior brick house though in my area they don’t sell “White mortar mix”. You mentioned you made your own. Just few questions, was your type s masonry cement in gray? (that’s the common color that they sell on home depot & lowe’s) and what brand of white sand? Appreciate it!
White Portland cement and white sand with lime is the ideal. But I only needed a little bit. I searched high and low and finally found some readymix white. Home Depot sales it but not in my area and they won’t ship it. Lowe’s and Home Depot’s product in stock would be too dark. I got lucky and found some at mutual materials, a paver/brick fab company in the northwest. It really was by accident because for some reason they received the wrong shipment of white ready mix. Well, it’s snow white for sure. Looks good
If you buy white thinset cheap (like $12/10 lb bag) I estimated about $150 for covering the square footage of my exterior brick at 1600 sqft. It’s been a while but I think I estimated about 128 sqft per 10lb bag. Definitely you should look at a bag of thinset you have access to and consider that the sqft coverage is based on that “different application” (under tile) and think about the kind of coverage you want. If you want a thinner look vs. a more covered and solitary color look it will change the amount needed. Pretty good odds though considering the material cost! Definitely a lot of work, but the good kind I think.
czcams.com/video/_781ocupP7U/video.html If I may ask, the brick wall in this warehouse looks like german smear but it has a color. Do you think it is done with colored mortar/top coat of paint after the mortar? Sorry to bother you again.
Didn't you watch the video? It was quite easy. 1 part cement, 2 parts white sand. Mix with water and apply with large drywall taping knife. Let it sit for 5-10 mins, then remove with the same large drywall taping knife. Beautiful brick is now even more beautiful-er! LOL!!!!
I agree with the painted part. I can see us realtors advertising "Schmeared Brick NOT painted brick". With latex paint you are creating a Maintenace headache along with trapping moisture behind the brick and paint. With this slurry/schmearing technique you are still allowing the brick to breath and release moisture so from a longevity stance you will be fine. Aesthetically? Folks are fickle for sure! I remember when I couldn't sell a White kitchen cabinet house, now that is ALL buyers want right now! Now instead of dark wood floors folks want light. Actually, they are wanting LVP instead of wood. I do think this style finish on brick will have long lasting appeal.
You should never paint exterior brick! It will cause the Appraiser to lower the value, call for a foundation report and could scare buyers away!. If you plan on staying in that house for life, paint away.
No actually this is the best method. The other DYI methods are a waste of time. You can make this look how ever way you want depending on how long you leave the parging material on the brick. You can scrape it off right after you apply it to expose most of the brick, then slap some more on to taste.
@@SGspecial84 If you apply it all over everything and then wipe some off, it's twice as much work. So long as you wipe some off that's good, otherwise it just looks like the brick has been limewashed being all with a whiteish cast.
Very nice. Loved seeing it with the garage doors and against natural wood. Thank you!

Exactly the look and information I was searching for-thank you!
You have the best video out there. THANK YOU. You were very thorough describing supplies needed anf the technique needed. Looks AMAZING.
He does and gets right to the point!!!!
The answer I was looking for. Perfect. Thank you!
Real Great! Thanks for the thorough walk through!
Beautiful transformation!
With literally any color of shutters, it would look fabulous!
Great Job guys!!!
"I'm sure you guys can figure it out." Thanks for the words of encouragement!
Looks great thank you for the amazing advice..👌
That’s a sweet bronco you got there. Brick looks good too 👍🏻
nice job presenting your work.
I did this on my fireplace and loved it.
Nice work 👍

Don't know how there could be a thumbs down on this one! Great Job Ninja Contractor!
If you were doing this for an older build with softer bricks would you use the same sand mix with type N or would you keep it the same?
WOW….. I LOVE it!!!!
Thank you for sharing this
Looks great. I tackled this on my floor to ceiling fireplace. I wish that all the "pros" would mention that it isn't as easy to do when your brick is rough (deeply pitted) and the grout lines are deep.
Mine are too and that's what I'm worried about.
You can pipe it onto the grout lines with a bag to help fill it in easier.
Looks good. Does this allow for the bricks to "breathe" compared to painting bricks?
Thank you sir ....✊
How has this held up? Does it get dirty? And does it clean easily?
You said 1 part mortar and 2 part sand.. is the mortar itself already wet? I'm sorry I've never done this outside but would really like to. Thank you.
I’m curious what the cost tor that was… Been thinking about having this done to the exterior brick on my chimney and front porch…
Looks great & thanks for sharing this. Did you mention how many parts water in your mixture?
Add water until the consistency is easily spread but does not smear when applied

improves flow and workability of the mortar

white sand and I would think white mortar but i think he used grey mortar
I really want to try this on my own
About how many bags of mortar & sand will it take? Or how can I calculate this?
Ive got existing 20 year old german smear on my house and some of the color in the motor has been washed away by rain in places. Any idea how to fix that. The motor is still there its just grey now, all the white is gone
Thank you.
Is the sand you used called White Silica Sand?
How thick can I apply this without it cracking?
Does the smear need to be sealed?
Would this work on a brick patio?
I'd like to do this with my red house to hide all the efflorescence and dirt from 50 years. But the grooves is very deep between the bricks 13mm (half inch) , can it work?
Yes, that would not make a difference
Question: Would this be any problem using on a short chimney needing repointing?
This would be a good option considering it will fill in the portions of missing mortar joints
What is the tool you are using for spreading? It looks like a drywall taping knife but beefier.
It’s a drywall type knife. Probably an old one they don’t care about because this would definitely ruin it for drywall ;)
I never seen no Kraut Brickies do nuttin like that
Hi! Can I contact you for some questions? Thinking about doing this to our house!
Are you able to paint this
I have a very ugly brick building.. the bricks are purple, red, orange, green, and brown... LOTS going on. I want to do this but my brick is EXTREMELY textured so I'm not sure if this will work.
You may want to try lime wash instead of mortar wash. You can apply it like paint with a brush which may be easier if you have a lot of texture
How can you ensure that it Does not get washed away with the rain? I’ve seen this happen before
You have seen this happen after it has dried?
@@ShellSellars-Smith yes I have. Not sure if it was because they did a very light wash. However I had it done to my previous house and it did not get washed away because it was a heavy layer of mortar.
Can you just leave the smear if you want no brick showing?

Call your local brick supplier

Could you use white sanded grout or does it need to be actual sand?
Do not use sanded grout, use mortar

White thin set is basically the same thing as mixing mortar with sand

Could you just use white mortar, with brown sand ?
You can use any color sand you like just make sure it’s mortar sand not concrete sand
How do you bid ( quote )German smear?
Time and materials
Can this be done to a home that has painted brick
No , not unless you sandblast or sodablast the paint off first
How much cost does it to do that i want to do it in my house

Do you reuse the leftover mortar at the bottom?
Yes

I'd try a green hose or power wash
What's the cost... per sqft
Material cost is low... maybe 25 cents/SF or less

More on the ground than on the floor
wow, looks like a lot of wasted product on the ground. Couldn't it be brushed on a little thinner?
You'll be sitting there all day brushing. Just lay cardboard down and reuse what falls down
Yes Abraham is correct

Diese Technik gibt es in Deutschland nicht.
Wir würden Klinker nicht so verunstalten.
I am sorry, it looks like an old weathered house with faded and chipping paint.
You should never paint exterior brick! It will cause the Appraiser to lower the value, call for a foundation report and could scare buyers away!. If you plan on staying in that house for life, paint away.
You're doing it all wrong. The idea is not to make it look like you whitewashed the house. The idea is to give it a unique German schmear look.
