  • Jiri Prochazka has a very interesting style, looks like a pain in the a$$ to deal with… That being said Prochazka vs Rakic was a war! Really high level stuff on both sides, let’s look into Jiri in particular.

      Him and Tyson Fury often look like they’re getting hit flush but they’re loose enough to start moving away almost at the start of the touch, or the ‘air’ of it, and I don’t think they eat it as much as it looks like they should. Of course there’s a massive risk to it, and Jiri does eat a few as a result, too.

    One of the former Glory kickboxers that Jiri trains with said in an interview that he is extremely weird in that he doesn't take hints. That he's never seen that in his entire career. He said that everyone backs up at a hint, raises their hands, makes a counter hint, but he doesn't react at all, which makes you very nervous. I've noticed it too. Jiri reacts much later than everyone else, but very well. He always moves his head just a few inches, but it's enough to make the other guy miss or miss completely accurately, and then he's drawn into the fight. In which he remains extremely cool. Rakic himself didn't know why he didn't go wrestling on him. The answer is simple. Jiri keeps giving you the feeling that you're going to take him down in the standup. But that's just one big illusion. It's about the ego of fighters who feel even right in the fight that he's not as good as he really is. And then there's a moment when they suddenly realize the opposite and it's too late.

      Jiri giving his opponents a false sense of security on the feet when they glance and tag him makes a lot of sense on why it appears that he just suddenly locks in and KOs dudes. Its like they're fighting one type of fighter and then without warning they're being bashed by another, in the Rakic fight anyways.

    An interesting thing about Jiri's movement is that the couple sentences in the Book of Five Rings on footwork say he's not a fan of "lightfoot" technique or complex movements. He basically just says your heels should be on the ground and you should have good traction so you can make the first strike count. So in this regard he's maybe less like Musashi but more like other samurai.

    Man Cory! That last point you made blew my fucking miiiiiiind. I am a super duper novice mmartist, like less than 6 months of training, but ive been watching fights for a long time now and try to analyze when I can. That last point you made about jiri being light on his feet, and how it translates to the punch absorption makes perfect sense. Idk if Im full of shit either, but man from where I am sitting that was a genius take. I hope the judges understand this too. Because of that style, it looks like punches might be sort of rocking him as he gets knocked back or stumbles back and forth to go with the punches. The broadcast team always goes "ooohhh!" like jiri ate a hard shot. But now I see what hes doing, and why hes able to "eat" those shots. Good thing for him he never goes to decision anyway so fuck what the judges think. Hes there to play around and then explode into incomprehensible violence when the time is right. Loved this breakdown and the respect you showed jiri. It takes a real mind for the game like yourselves to let us all know that he isnt just some wild moron in there. Hes my favorite fighter btw so thats not me thinking that, just opinions that I see around a lot.

      I agree with that analysis, especially if you watch in slomo he really does roll with the punches he takes. Which kinda makes sense why Pereira's hook was so effective, he basically made him go in a direction to be able to catch him clean, which prevented Jiri from absorbing the shot.
      (Apart from how that shot is just deadly in itself - also you can kinda see how the right hook was more of a push and the left hook was targeted at the chin and much sharper)

    I saw a few of his interviews in his native language and he often times speaks about "setting his head the right way" to take incoming punches. So he consciously tries to block punches with his head. Its a risky tactic but then it leaves your hands free to strike back since they are not used for blocking :D

  • @futureaugraphy
    @futureaugraphy Před 15 dny +5

    100% i think you hit the nail on the head with Jiri's slipping. He slips a lot of shots and is generally moving away when he does get hit which definitely lessens the impact. He gets caught with an elbow by rakic in the second round and you can tell the shot wobbled him a little. In that instance he was going towards rakic and it happened when they crashed.
    Love the breakdowns dude. I'm a big fan of Jiri's style and I'd love to hear some more insight into how you think he is setting his shots up and making reads. He makes a southpaw high kick, to a stance switch, to a 1 2 that he spams a few times in the second round that lands pretty much every time he throws it

  • @tylerelefterion5606
    @tylerelefterion5606 Před 12 dny +5

    Hope we get to see the old elbows and knees jiri used to throw contantly. It was amazing because a lot of fighters tend to crash together when they both throw strikes simultaneously. So switching from a ranged strike to an elbow or knee gave jiri a huge advantage. Like having a dagger in a swordfight that is in clinch range while your opponent is still trying to use a sword.

    • @TruthScrotum
      @TruthScrotum Před 12 dny +2

      yo this is a crazy insightful point. First off I think he will get back to this, I dont think he has abandoned it per se. But literally in the book of five rings this type of concept is discussed. How one would not be using the long sword at close range, and how a fighter needs to have the long sword and the dagger both for the different circumstances. And to literally use the dagger (or whatever they call it in the book) while opponent is still trying to use the sword at close range! So especially in this context, your particular observation and analogy was pretty fucking genius!

Its really hard. The problem is that its also so tiring. But then ive also said before that the most tiring thing in boxing is holding your hands up so is it any more tiring than holding a solid guard? Not really. Jiri has one, massive, glaring issue with his fighting. He cant check leg kicks efficiently whatsoever. What jiri needs to do for leg kicks, is either stay in a neutral position relative to the opponent, and check leg kicks from that neutral moving slightly forward AS he checks, not before. Or he needs to be moving backwards into a stop for the leg check. Thats the technical movement side, but his technique on the actual leg check is very bad. Jiri connects his lead foot to the ground to check kicks and it clearly causes intense damage which is a big weak point. He needs to lift that lead leg, and isolated the kick to his calf to shin area, and loosely move with the kicks direction into your leg. Your leg wont take any thudding damage, and the opponent still gets checked, and it makes countering with a jab or straight much much easier... dont believe me? Pay close attention to alex pereira and how he checks leg kicks, it is exactly how i explained. Jiri has a big advantage over pereira in one part, his right hand. Pereira is notoriously bad at right overhand defense, jiri is a master at landing it. I think based on the last fight, jiri has a 45 percent chance of winning, 60 if he changes those aspects. Though a part of me wants to see some ground game from jiri👀

    Jiri doesn't know how to fight. At least that's how he looks in his fights - just a big dude who's all over the place with shots and movements. But he keeps winning, so somehow he makes it work. Go figure...
