    I'm surprised he didn't talk about the way color was used in the show. How each of the defenders had a specific color heavily used in their alone scenes. And then there was that restaurant scene where they came together and even the neon sign used each of their colors. That was one of my favorite aspects of the show

    There actually is kind of an excuse for not calling the Avengers or SHIELD. This takes place during SHIELD season 3, in between Ant-Man and Civil War. During this time, Coulson and his team were traveling the world looking for Inhumans, so they wouldn't have been around. Captain America and his New Avengers team was also traveling the world saving little towns from warlords like Crossbones (and low-key looking for Bucky). Thor wasn't on Earth and Hulk was MIA. Peter Parker may have been Spider-Man, but he would have been new to his powers, and he lives in Queens. The only real person you would call is Tony Stark, but from his point of view, an earthquake happened and then a building collapsed. And the entire thing happened in three days. Tony could have been at a party the whole time.

      under_score nope. Right now, it's the farthest in the timeline because
      A: most of daredevil season 1 takes place before avengers 2. The avengers were in sokovia while DD was fighting the kingpin
      B: season 2 of daredevil happens around season 3 of Agents Of Shield because the events of the show was on the news in S3
      C: The JUDAS bullets from Luke Cage showed up in Season 4 of Agents Of Shield
      D: spider man was actually referenced in a in universe song in the last episode of defenders

      Anyway that whole defenders plot took place underground at night as well as their own standalones shows so even without all this information about the crossing timeline which is wow that is some dedication, it's still reasonable and respectable to the canon if u twist the logic. I simply imagine the avengers were sleeping or somewhere else AS LONG as the defenders stay in the dark then there is continuity. But I scoff anytime any one of them spur the words along the line of "New York is my city" 🤣 no it's not someone get them up to speed.

    A few questions...
    1) What is the Black Sky?
    2) What can the Black Sky do?
    3) If the leaders of The Hand are immortal, why are Gao and Alexandra so old?
    4) Why would the Hand need to hire Harlem kids of all people to do "clean up"? Shouldn't they have an organization that does that sort of thing?
    5) Did Jessica finally fly? I honestly couldn't tell. The lighting was almost at level "AVP Requiem" which made it very hard to see, and they NEVER mentioned it afterwards.
    6) Why did they play that Wu-Tang song in that final fight?
    7) Are we SUPPOSED to hate Iron Fist? I sure do.

    • @yashbhuiya7156
      @yashbhuiya7156 Před 7 lety +33

      I'll try to answer some of the questions here.
      1&2) The Black Sky, from what I saw in the Defenders, is a superhuman assassin, whose abilities can only be summoned after having the "vessel" die and be revived. The black sky, Elektra in particular, has shown be incredibly strong, and may even give Captain America a run for his money.
      3) As for why those 2 are so old, I assume its like why Ra's Al Ghul is so old. They don't take as many dips as the other members do. Or they got immortalized much later in their lifetime compared to the others, like that main villain of Iron Fist (I don't remember that guy's name. I didn't like Iron Fist that much.)
      5) Jessica can't ever fly. She can jump really high. Like a super jump essentially.
      7) If you are talking about how Danny kinda acts annoyingly stubborn, I understand why that bothers you. I don't hate him, and I don't think we are supposed to hate him, but if you do and a few others do, then there is nothing that can be done about it. Hopefully, season 2 of Iron Fist fixes that.

    • @HurricaneDDragon
      @HurricaneDDragon Před 7 lety +5

      Yash Bhuiya
      I just feel like Elektra wasn't really worth the precious final resources and massive effort the Hand used to acquire her. She's an assassin who didn't get the job done, and even became a hindrance to the Hand in the end. I don't know why Alexandra bothered to get a "super assassin" when the Hand had a literal army of ninjas.
      In the comics Jessica can effectively fly like an airplane as in she needs a running start, a big jump, and a landing spot, but when she's in the air she's pretty much flying. During the finale I thought Jessica might've been floating when she was holding up the elevator, but like I said, it was so dark that I couldn't really see. The music, Luke and Danny's reactions, and the fact that it seemed like she needed both hands to grab the cable made me think that maybe Netflix decided to give her at least a levitating ability. Otherwise, I don't understand why Danny and Luke had such a reaction that she had to tell them to "Stop staring."
      Oh, I won't be watching Season 2 of Iron Fist. Which shouldn't exist.

    • @yashbhuiya7156
      @yashbhuiya7156 Před 7 lety +4

      I know about Jessica's abilities in the comics, but they nerfed a bit in the show. As for Elektra, I believe that under other circumstances where the hand doesn't have to fight Superhumans, then the Black Sky is like a One Man Army. Of course, right when they finally got the Black Sky, she had to fight 4 superhumans. So she kinda had her hands full. The army of ninjas probably wouldn't have done as well against them then Elektra as the Black Sky.

    • @HurricaneDDragon
      @HurricaneDDragon Před 7 lety +3

      Yash Bhuiya I know they nerfed her powers for the show. I was hoping that was a set up for a surprise. But no.
      Elektra literally didn't do anything but use martial arts and ninja weapons. If the Black Sky actually had powers or could actually kill a ragtag group of low level superheroes then I would buy the Hand going through so much trouble to resurrect her, but it seems like the only benefit to resurrecting someone as the Black Sky is to have a better than average ninja assassin with temporary memory loss which allows you to control them for a relatively short time. That's what the Hand did with Elektra and others in the comics, but it wasn't such a "special chosen one" kind of thing like in the show. Maybe the Black Sky should have actual supernatural abilities like corrupting people's hearts and minds, or regeneration, or walking through walls, SOMETHING.

    SPOILERS
    The first few episodes where they were separate was a bit on the dull side but I gotta say when they got together 0 to 100 real quick. My only real problem with Defenders is The Hand. In Daredevil they seemed like this all powerful mysterious Illuminati like organisation but it seems like it's just a bunch of old people trying to live longer. One of the worst parts is when the main leader whose been alive for god knows how long is just killed off suddenly out of nowhere by the BlackSky which she had been trying to attain the whole of S2 of Daredevil. It was just so anti-climact, they seemed more like a group of thugs rather than this all powerful organisation.

    The hand was extremely disappointing. All this build for something so lackluster. They felt like a bunch of amateur goons in this show. I don't know why because they felt so menacing and powerful in daredevil. I just wanted the same vibe I got with Fisk, kill grave, cotton mouth, and the hand from daredevil in terms of villains. Instead I was just laughing at how easily the hand got taken down. Other than that I enjoyed the show. I don't get the massive amount of hate in this comment section.

      @cjzanders5430 Před 7 lety +9

      I would give it a 76 on a Tomato meter. It's just a little too character driven and doesn't balance the conflict well enough with the hand. We see man-made earthquake being used by the hand but don't know how it was used by The Hand. We keep hearing how devastatingly dangerous The Hand is, but there's nothing we haven't seen before in Daredevil and Iron Fist. Yes they want to resurrect but the conflict is like the same thing in every episode never really amounting to much.

      CJ Zanders Exactly how I feel. They need to make the seasons longer tbh. 8 episodes isn't gonna cut it if your gonna cram so many characters into one show. So many sub plots instead of showing us the hand's power capability. So much emphasis on Electra rather than the hand. It felt more like a season 3 to daredevil imo.

    The show's crowning flaw, the villains. The Five Fingers of the Hand who Stick says when they're all together death and carnage ensues... they went down like pansies. Also their entire motivation in this series is to get dragon bones to prolong their immortality which presumably was done to give them a thwartable goal for the Defenders to target. The problem is it contradicts absolutely everything that was spelled out in Iron First and Daredevil about how the Hand's immortality works. They're immortality wasn't invulnerability, yet the guy Colleen grew up with takes a sword to the neck and multiple gun shots without blinking. It was shown that they die just like regular humans, it's just that after a day or two they revive (some side effects may ensue) so if they auto revive after a certain amount of time unless they lose their heads why would they need more of the immortality substance. And if this substance is so rare why is it used on their foot soldiers as we saw in Daredevil season 2, even they're ground troops are undead.
    In addition to that why and how it is that the Dragon Danny defeated to get the Iron Fist's bones under New York? He says to Gow that she's desecrating the body of Shuw Lew and she responds by saying "and you punched him in the heart" so it is the same dragon. If Danny killed the dragon rather than just defeating it how did previous and how will subsequent Iron Fist's get the power and since the place under NY was sealed by the Chaste millennia ago that means for Danny to have fought the dragon where they were also had to be a passage to Kun Lun, so if the Hand has opened a passage to Kun Lun where the hell were the city full of warrior monks ready to take them down?

    To me it wasn't entirely bad but it had major flaws, the most important ones being: 1- "The Hand" as a villain was too weak 2- I was expecting a little more interaction between them, i feel like there was some chemistry missing and 3- am i the only one who really dislikes Matt and Elektra together? I don't know, i wasn't expecting in season 2 of Daredevil for Matt and Karen's start of relationship to end so abruptly and i never entirely bought Elektra's character

      anne melvine I completely agree about The Hand. In season 2 of Daredevil, they felt vast and incredibly threatening. In The Defenders, they felt very weak. Nobu was a high ranking member that came the closest to killing Matt even though he was much lower in the hierarchy than the 5 Fingers, yet none of them seemed as capable without resorting to super powers. The Hand damn near filled Hell's Kitchen with undead ninjas in Daredevil, yet there seemed to be a lot less of them in The Defenders. I could continue on regarding the degradation of The Hand between the 2 shows, but I think my point has been made.

    I loved the season. But i think my favorite thing about the entire show was the color play. How each character before they met up the show was tinted their colors, Red for Daredevil, Blue for Jessica, Green for Iron Fist, Yellow for Luke Cage. It was so well done. Like when Matt Murdock first met Jessica, she was in a blueish room and when he burst in the inside of the door was red. It was throughout the whole show. When they went to the restaurant the colors of the neon dragon included all four colors. Small stuff like that kept showing up throughout the entire show.

    I think the "Iron Fist on the roof top scene" he mentions was actually a great tease scene for what fans wanted to see from the character in season 2 of his show (plus a step closer to seeing him in the full outfit). Also it's worth noting he definitely becomes mature by the end of this season due to certain events and the people he has met. Him and Luke Cage definitely make for the best team and I eagerly look forward to a heroes for hire series or episode in the future.

    I'm not the only one that actually kinda loved the show, right? They actually did it better than I thought they were. I was underwhelmed by the five fingers, except for Gao and Alexandra. That's about it. I actually thought Karen and Foggy being overly concerned with Matt was fitting. After months of believing that he had retired, and didn't miss, Daredevil, him going back at such a dangerous time would definitely make them fear for his life more than they ever had. I personally would give it an A-.

    • @redhillbones7672
      @redhillbones7672 Před 7 lety +3

      Doctor Infallible I'm with you. I'm also confused by all the comments who don't understand what the Hand were trying to do or why they were trying to do it. That was very, very well laid out in multiple episodes. It wasn't a world ending plan because they didn't want the world to end. It was only the end of their plan because it was the last known source. It was simply that they needed something that, in mining it, would destabilize the foundational structure in Manhattan and cause mass destruction. Frankly, I found big villains having a relatively small goal refreshing. If Suicide Squad had gone that direction and had much, much better pacing-based editing it could have been good. Defenders are to Avengers as Suicide Squad is to Justice League, in terms of scale, and this scale was fitting. One goal, one building, one problem, and one chance to stop it from destroying hundreds of thousands of lives.
      Not to mention that every single character motivation, from Foggy and Karen's reluctance, and why Matt made the choice that he did, to the same for every hero/supporting character from each show, was established at some point. There wasn't a lot of character growth but I don't think they needed there to be that here. The only growth needed was 'okay, so working together sometimes might be a good idea going forward'.
      I liked it. Some of the fight editing could be better. Finn Jones needs to learn more before S2 of either IF, Defenders, or maybe a Heroes for Hire thing they'll do. A lot more. But overall, it delivered as promised and it did it without the awkwardness all the other Marvel Netflix shows had to one degree or another. And some of the cinematography/editing was downright awesome.
      The only thing I really disliked was that there's no timestamp-y reference to give us an idea of when this is set. If I'm correct it's chronologically either in the time leading up to or around the same time as the Sokovia accords, something the show could have used in a 'so, fuck, we're on our own then' way.

      saeva atdreamwidth Yeah, I'm always confused with the timeline of the Netflix MCU. All I knew for a long time was that all of it happened after the first Avengers. And I don't even know how long after that. It's also difficult to establish the actual time between shows. Kinda wish that they threw in Easter eggs to the films a bit more. Show a TV that's reporting on, and has footage of, the fight with Ultron in NY that turns off as a part of the power outage.

It is a show that deals with real human emotion and the four deal with different yet empathetic issues. And it's this reason why CW have been overtaken by Marvel Netflix. If they don't explore the powers that are in the show itself then don't be surprised if people rightfully gauge their power by what they've seen.

      Glad you liked it! I for one, didn't think it was that great. The main female villain was not compelling at all and a lot of scenes with her felt very repetitive. On top of all that, the first 2-3 episodes felt very slow and was weirdly edited together. It felt choppy and out of place, and Iron fists story in the beginning had terrible dialogue (IMO). And the terrible dialogue didnt just extend to Iron Fist, it also extended to other scenes in the show as well, and that really takes you out of it as a viewer.
      Overall, I liked it and thought the best moments were with all four Defenders on screen (either talking or fighting or etc), but a lot of the show just feels slow and out of touch. FYI just my opinion. Hope to provide an alternative viewpoint!

Some people really liked the character Stick, while others hated him and wishes that he never should've existed, but some people just think he was underwhelming and didn't care if he died or not.

    I found my way here because I wanted to see what other people thought about this series. I just finished episode 5 of season 1 for the first time and was starting to feel quite annoyed with the terrible writing and directing choices (or lack of them). Alexandra shows up alone and unarmed and they don't kill her or at least take her prisoner? Elektra gets hit by a car and isn't immediately killed or subdued? (would've made a great scene for Stick to try to kill one or both of these characters immediately and then Matt to jump in to break it up -- now THAT would've made for a great scene, with the "Defenders" taking on each other while also trying to make it out alive). Gao is knocked down but not immediately killed or subdued? Murakami is literally knocked out but not killed or taken prisoner? The remaining "Defenders" are in great shape outside, at the back door, with only a few simpleton minions left inside after Elektra runs away and yet they feel the need to not only RUN AWAY themselves but in the SEWERS?? Even Alexandra looked scared in the car nearby.
    I enjoyed Daredevil and The Punisher (even though they weren't really that faithful to poor Frank's comic background) but struggled through the drawn-out melancholy of Jessica Jones and the lack of well-roundedness in her character. She seems really out of place in The Defenders. The Iron Fist series is to me, as you also said, a disappointment and could've been so much better. This guy was supposed to be the sole protector of the entrance to Kun Lun? Really? A guy who does so-so Kung Fu and sometimes lights up his hand to punch stuff and regularly gets thumped by average fighters? THAT guy is supposed to be the sole holder of the iron fist and protector of the entrance? Right.
    Luke Cage wasn't bad but, as I've been watching these shows, I realized that they seem to rehash and recycle some of the same plot points, dialogue, and progressions between them. I was really looking forward to seeing The Defenders, hoping that as they were brought together the story would become more interesting and reveal some different, if not cool, revelations. Unfortunately, after just 5 episodes, what I've seen is writers and directors who have mistreated and mishandled what they've been given.

  • @JerichoLeon
    @JerichoLeon Před 7 lety +2

    My opinion: Characters didn't shine through. They were very static, one dimensional, merely carried a shadow of the tone of their seasons. They were put together in scenes where the director seemed to expect 'magic' to happen, but it just didn't. Instead the delivery was stale and sometimes even forced. Luke Cage and Iron Fist were expected to have chemistry but didn't. None of the characters showed any actual chemistry.
    The side characters were forced in. Their interaction with each other felt like an obligation. They simply echoed the obvious at each other. "Oh really, that's what happened to you? Oh my gosh that's horrible."
    The Five Fingers were awful. When they're revealed and actually fight, you have to ask: Really? That's them? How is it that Nobu, a non-Five Finger member, posed more of a threat to the main character than all Five Fingers combined? Kingpin from Daredevil Season 1 was even more elusive than the Five Fingers, and he was able to hide himself in broad daylight, even managing to remain "hidden" in public sight. Kingpin is the real ninja, not the Five Fingers.
    The choreography showed improvement for Iron Fist alone, but were lacking for the rest. In the finale group fight, they used the actual actors who were mostly not action heroes, and their fighting were stiff. The Hand looked like dummies just waiting to be punched by Jessica Jones or awkwardly thrown by Luke Cage. They should have been untouchable! The hospital scene from Daredevil season 1 showed how intimidating even a fraction of the hand could be, and here they were, being taken out by people who don't even know martial arts. Furthermore, Daredevil and Iron Fist had barely any room to fight coherently and so their segments were shot so close that you could barely make out what they were doing.
    The final fight with the two characters was redundant and too lengthy. I was begging for it to end.
    The setting in the whole season felt claustrophobic. Too many of the fight scenes happened indoors, in a convenient open space factory or warehouse setting. It felt like those b-movie Japanese action flicks for kids.
    The story itself was so linear. It's a straight, predictable track with no surprises, no major events happening in the universe. The ending left so many unanswered questions. The director banked on the team chemistry so much that the rest of the other elements that would make a great show were mostly expected to just work out. Unfortunately, the chemistry just wasn't there.

The whole "In war, both sides need to believe blah blah blah" is sophomoric, at best. It's really not that clever. Elektra was even more underdeveloped than Weaver's character, and the whole dinosaur-bone thing was a bland, stupid reveal, lacking sufficient foreshadowing. The show was great, I just thought the hand was a bit underwhelming after all this build up. Iron fist still isn't right- I want him to be more like his comic version. Besides the lacking villains, and iron fist still being underwhelming, I thought the show was amazing and I loved all the characters!

    To be honest Iron Fist becomes Daredevil in the comics for some time...

      AdmacEdits mate Scarlett Johansson could have one arm but she'd still be damn beautiful in my books!

    Two things I noticed, I don't know if you guys think the same:
    - The Hand was more intimidating in Daredevil season 2. Kinda dissapointed....
    - Jessica Jones was way stronger in her own series.
