    Terrie, thank you for having the courage to share this. I hope that many will be saved from a life of cancer and respiratory disease by seeing what smoking has done to you. My grandfather died from emphysema. And my mother is slowly dieing from the same thing plus lung cancer. Now thanks to my ex-wife getting our daughter hooked on them, she is a habitual chain smoker. I will be forwarding these videos to her.

    Nobody in my house smokes, but a long time ago, my Mom told me, when she was a little girl, one of my uncles (my mom’s oldest brother) smoked, and my mom wanted to try it, too. She told me she was gagging and choking for about a half hour, and she’s not touched a cigarette ever since. I’m so glad she hasn’t.

    CDC mourns the passing of Terrie Hall [the subject of this video]. Terrie, 53, died this past Monday, September 16, from the cancer she fought so bravely during the final 13 years of her life. Dawn Moose, MD, the Winston-Salem radiation oncologist who had taken care of Terrie since her first throat cancer, summarized Terrie’s struggle: “No one fought harder than Terrie with such a positive spirit. She saved more peoples’ lives from cancer than any doctor.”

      You are very welcome. I may not personally know you, but I am extremely proud of you for taking charge of your health. :D I also want to stress to you that there is no reason to think you were stupid, for the fact is you were merely uninformed. And before becoming informed on the harmful effects of smoking, you may very well have caused some damage; however, what's most important is you've made the decision to stop before further damage can be done. Keep doing your best, Teresa, and get support from family, friends, therapists, fellow smokers who are trying to stop, and x-smokers who have stopped. There are also smoking-cessation aids like patches, gum, or shots. How is your progress going so far?

    Her story just shows how addictive cigarettes are. Smoking right up to the door, knowing the reason she was going there for surgery in the first place was because of cigarettes.
    Anyone who hasn't started, don't do it. It'll be one of the biggest regrets of your life. Especially if you smoke long enough to become addicted to them.

  • @CDC
    @CDC  Před 11 lety +8

    There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes numerous health problems in infants and children, including severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Some of the health conditions caused in adults include heart disease and lung cancer. Most exposure to secondhand smoke occurs in homes and workplaces. Eliminating smoking in indoor spaces is the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from exposure.

    I can understand what you're saying. There are some people who tend to not get smoking related sickness or disease, etc. Just like there are some people who were somehow "immune" to large amounts of radiation. I just don't know how it really happens. but yes good job that you are not a smoker. (^^) it's best not to take the risk even though your family members were ok.
