  • Terrie had cancer as a result of smoking. In a 2012 Tips From Former Smokers TV commercial, Terrie showed us how she got ready for her day. In this video, Terrie shares that the only voice her grandson ever heard was an artificial one. He was born after doctors removed her larynx. Her tip to smokers is to "make a video or recording of yourself reading a children's storybook and singing a lullaby-before smoking affects your health."

      Serge Smith :
Look on the bright side: Nicotine lacks those powerful and even life-threatening withdrawal symptoms associated with the likes of Heroin, chronic binge drinking/alcoholism and even its big brothers like meth and cocaine. In any case, the thing with nicotine is that it is so widespread, and it reacts so slowly and steadily, it takes decades for one to die from its effects.. But here is the dark side: she was so used to smoking that life without it feels alien. Let´s just say that people in ancient and mediaeval tmes were somewhat healthier than modern society on that regard.
Just because you feel irritable or depressed or pissed off, does not mean you will pass out and die. Tell that to to a good uncle of mine, who as an adult, relied on alcohol to survive. People like him could pass out, go on a coma or even die if left untreated. Ncotine acts a lot slower than other substances, but you do not want to spend the last daysof your life losing your hair, looking anorexic even though you don't have a obsessive urge to lose weight, and feel like marijuana is the only thing that lets you live a wee bit longer.

@@bridgetr8949 Some of the people who share their personal stories in the Tips ads have a medical condition that required them to have their larynx or voice box removed. When the larynx is removed, the valve cover that protects the windpipe is also removed. The surgeon makes an opening or hole in the throat, which is called a stoma, so the person can take in air through that opening rather than through the nose and mouth. Some people who have had their larynx removed use a special device called a laryngeal implant to speak. To do this, the person needs to push air from their lungs through the implant device. The stoma has to be covered so the air will go through the device and not out of the stoma. The hands-free device closes the stoma during speech.

At the start of the campaign, she said that if she could prevent one person from smoking then she has done something great. We will be sure to share this with her. We hope your mother can find the right encouragement and motivation to quit as well. Let her know that free resources are available by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

People often demonize smokers like we are criminals, but this punishment doesn't fit the crime, and I'm truly sorry for how much you have suffered. I admire you for speaking out and for trying to help others, this shows a level of compassion that some commenters deny you. These commercials have given me the strength to face my fears of quitting, and to seek help from others.

Smoking affects not only your mother’s health, but yours as well. Secondhand smoke exposure is not safe, and you should avoid it as much as you can. Continue to encourage your mother to quit smoking, and remind her that quitting will benefit more than just herself. If she wants free help to quit, she can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW and speak with a trained cessation counselor who can offer support and advice.

AssassinWolfGaming Continue trying to help him quit smoking and never ever try it. I only tried it because I wondered what it taste like. I was a stress smoker for a year or two on and off. My last cigarette was over a month ago and I still crave it every morning. Tell your friend it will effect his growth, it will make him wrinkly, and how girls hate it because we do. Maybe take it upon yourself to tell his mother. It's what's right to do, doing what's right isn't easy but he will thank you for it one day. I have a non-cancerious tumor in my neck. It's not smoking related and I'm only 18 and have many heath problems. They need to cut my face open to remove it. I wish I never smoked because I raised my chances for cancer. You don't think about it when you're young but you regret the damage you've done and always wonder what will happen to you. I worry everyday.

This scared me when I was little but not anymore I feel 100%, sad for her. Also if everyone wants to stop smoking, why are they still making the cigarettes? They already know what's happening to them.

This made me cry a bit. I feel sorry that Terrie got cancer. I just cant believe her bravery. It shows everyone this really can happen. I dont smoke. I relize second-hand smoke myself. I never tell someone not to smoke, but I give them keypoints at places like target. I cough to let them know, i'm a child, and there are many other children, and everyone else walking into this store and sharing that smoke.

Nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes. It travels through the bloodstream to the brain, where it activates reward pathways--the brain circuits that control feelings of pleasure. Brain changes from nicotine can cause addiction (compulsive drug use). When an addicted user quits, he or she can have withdrawal symptoms like irritability, sleep problems, and tobacco cravings which make it more difficult. Treatments can help smokers manage these symptoms.
