Can’t believe how much space inters midfield had at times. Milan were so spread out

It's the way Inzaghi plays his game. 1 regista in Calhanoglu and 2 ball carriers in Barella and Mhki flank by both offensive and defensive capable wing backs in DiMarco and Dumfries. Milan on the other hand has only try 352 recently to imitate Inter’s but failed miserably as Pioli could only field 3 defensive midfielders with clueless wingbacks thus left gaps in between in what is apparently poorly drilled team move. Inter has been playing the way they were ever since Conte era and now with Inzaghi more preferred fluid style Inter no longer depend on counter attacking but they can smashed open opponent defense at their mercy.

Inzaghi prepared well for the match, taking advantage of Leao's absence to implement a 1-on-1 marking and press Milan higher. Inter's players were superior in winning second balls due to their crowded midfield and physicality. Pioli relied heavily on long balls to the target man this season, making them vulnerable to high-pressing teams that excel in winning second balls. This strategy contributed to Milan's crisis in January. I believe it would have been more effective if Pioli had opted for a 3-4-3 formation, which has proven solid against teams utilizing a 3-5-2 formation.

Yes I agree long balls are piolis main tactic and with the absence of leao there aren’t really any good rebounders if a long ball goes short. I also think that we were giving away way too much space in their attacking stages. I’m not sure what formations we could use for next season to fix some of these problems we had

@@jimbobulator2.085 The 4-2-3-1 formation was effective when we had the right players. We witnessed our best football in the 20/21 season. Zlatan was instrumental, dominating most of the long balls and also dropping deep to combine with his teammates. Hakan was quite good at the attacking midfield role, consistently supporting the double pivot in midfield and moving around the pitch. The pairing of Kessie and Bennacer was S tier duo, a formidable combination of physicality and technical ability. However, we have now lost these crucial elements, which is why I believe it's time to switch to a 4-3-3 formation. This formation is simpler to implement and easier to find players who can excel in this system.

An absolute masterclass from Inzaghi. I think the 2nd leg they should be less aggressive but still look to get 1-2 goals that really finish the tie off. You don't want to allow Milan to score a goal that gets them back into it.

  • @islandyouth1744

The problem i have with a 3-5-2 is the back five structure makes it a little more difficult to press effectively in so your team can be pushed all the way back into a low block against a good ball moving team but its excellent in transition i guess every shape has it's bright and dull sides

I disagree. Against a back 4 you can press like shown in the video above, against a back 3, where your 2 strikers are outnumbered you push up one of the midfielders (usually Barella at inter) to press the third CB. Wingbacks press opposing wingbacks and the defensive midfielder (Brozo) and other midfielder (Miki) keep an eye on the opposing midfielders. I think its fairly flexible as a formation and very dependant on good wingbacks. Dumfries has been a little disappointing this season in terms of scoring but is very athletic and thus makes up for it. Does my explanation make sense?

I was saying that within 5 minutes after noticing inter's man marking, pioli should've instructed giroud to shift to the left onto darmian, and then instruct Kruger and diaz to push up and shadow giroud waiting for the 2nd ball.
This couldve allowed maignan to continuously have an outlet to the left because inter were more combative and aggressive when the 2nd balls came especially on the left.

Football made even more simple N.1:
Milan tactic: let's give the ball to Leao, he will dribble a few opponents and either put it in the net or pass it to Giroud in front of the keeper.
Milan stats this season with Leao: 2.2 points avg per match in Serie A
Milan stats this season without Leao: 0.8 points avg per match in Serie A.
    Fact.
Football made even more simple N.2:
Inter has the lowest number of dribblings per team in the whole SERIE A! and second lowest as average per match in the champions league (after Viktoria Plsen).
Still, Inter are able to score a lot, create chances over chances through exceptional team play, 1-2 touches football (like the second goal in this video) and interchangeable positioning on the pitch amongst players.
Mr Simone highly underrated in my opinion 🖤💙

Came back to watch this because of the changes this summer. If Milan plays a 433 with a deep regista then we’ll cut out a lot of the problems Inter hit us with early in the match.
When starting with a gk, the fullbacks can press higher up, not allowing Inter’s wingbacks too far into our space. Then Inter’s 2 strikers have to try and cover 2 CBs and a DM along with Maignan; an easy 4v2 for Milan. If Inter commit a midfielder to press then their DM will have to push up on one of Milan’s 8s and this will allow Milan to be 3v3 vs Inter’s backline. And with Giroud as a target man and Leao and Chukweze running in behind this would be suicide for Inter. So Inter will have to either retreat their wingbacks back to create a 5v3 in the back, freeing up Milan’s fullbacks. Or Inter will have to take the L on the high press and allow their DM to come back to help the backline which would allow their wingbacks onto Milan’s fullbacks. Either way, a 433 is likely the best way to counter Inter’s 352.
It’s going to be much trickier for Inter this season to try and beat Milan. It’s not going to be so cut and dry. I think the only chance Inter will have to beat Milan this season is to sit back, defend very narrowly and compactly, and hit on the counter. Milan, for a long time, have a hard time breaking down teams that sit back. Maybe it’ll change with the new signings. So hopefully we fix that because I’m betting that’s how Inter approaches these future games. And if they don’t they will lose.

Surely Newcastle are regretting now and I don’t believe he will come good at all if he continues to stay and continue to be a bench player. Then again the transfer isn’t hurting their pockets. Even Murphy is better than him and I didn’t think he would last long at Newcastle due to their takeover but he is shining kind of.
I’m an Liverpool fan before Inter fan but for me Origi is a deserving starting player given what he did for Liverpool all those years but I feel AC Milan is kind of big for him to be a starting player. Hell he looks suited as a Winger then a Striker which is kind of like a back step behind for him. A mid table team if he wants to be a starter player is where he should be imo. As for Rebic, I’ve always wondered what happened to him. I never expected him to ever go on a bad run of form and even be behind the likes of Junior Messias who is also another bench player. and forgot to give 2 pens (Krunic punch '74, Thiaw hand '77) for them, not sure the Ref was that bad for Milan at the end

@@attilac7339 thiaw situation, the ball hit is body first then hand which is not considered a handball. Ref was not calling many niggling fouls against Milan, the only situation that was not called in Inter's favor was Krunic hitting Bastoni.

@@fungool i am not sure about the handball, i know the ball first hit his right shoulder but then that left arm was not in a proper position, and therefore it should not be ignored, just because first it hit/touched another part of the player
(just imagine a situation when a defender is at the goal line, both hands, arms above his head, and the ball first touches his head, and then he blocks finally by the arms... by your logic, it is within the rules, but I would see the ref who does not give a penalty for that, even, the intention was to head the ball out)
also there was a same issue, when Giroud hit Dumfries neck/chin , and the ref gave goal kick, when the same happened to Mikitarjan, gave yellow immediately.. I couldn't recall any other hit made on Milan players, and this one was sanctioned properly
