I've HAD ENOUGH of Bluegrass...

- There's a part of my lawn that I don't talk about very much and maybe there's a good reason why?
The area outside of my fence has never been the absolute best in terms of the Kentucky Bluegrass back there, but it seems to be getting worse. That is partially because I don't take care of it as much, and partially because it is not the best bluegrass in the world either :) I will see what the rest of the fall lawn care season brings and make some decisions next season.

The new lens is incredible! Some of the best video footage you’ve shot in terms of overall video quality!
Thanks for showing the weeds in that back section. My yard looks like that, but it's been getting better since subscribing to your channel!!
Fun as always! I'm excited about the landscaping project on the side of the house.
I love the back deck. The way it ties into the shed is awesome.
I found with growing my TTTF in the back, it took forever before I was able to give it a proper mow. The results in the end.... 🔥
Here in buffalo i haven't had rain in months and none in sight. Its made my over seeding very challenging. Never thought i would be dragging a sprinkler around my 50k sf lawn in the fall. I never wanted it to rain so much in my life!
I hear you I’m with you in So Illinois. It hasn’t rained for that a 1/4 inch in well over 2-3 months.
I feel so bad for you tho. I aerated and overseeded and have been dragging the sprinkler around a 8k square foot yard. I COULDNT imagine 50!
Best of luck to you. We actually have a chance of rain late tonight, but then none again for weeks.
I live in Ontario and same thing here.
Same in MA, no rain 😤
Tomorrow rain here in Buffalo. Get a rain train for that big yard.
Totally sucks. West MI hasn’t had squat for rain. Aerated and overseeded. I’m going to lose a lot of germination I’m afraid.
I absolutely love watching your videos and I have learned a lot from you, you ever think to have a spot or site where viewers can show pics of their lawns?
Backyard is looking great. Well done! Neighbors yard looks great on the drone shots too😉
I just overseeded my lawn with a blend of Kentucky blue grass from Super seed store . After 4 weeks it’s coming in really nice.
Nice DOF with that new camera... gives your videos a nice look. Well done!
I like your new camera lens. The video seems shaper with better bokeh in background. Here in Seattle area we have had 5 days off rain. It totally cleaned the smoke. I got some mushrooms and moss to take care on my lawn.
That depth of field with that new lens 🔥
That deck is a great addition and perfect sense to build it all the way to the shed.
The fires here on the west coast have be insane to say the least. Hopefully it has cleared up there. It certainly has here.
I hope you will be happy with the Fescue. You really have the best of both worlds, super short and tight in the front, Tall Fescue in the back.. Lol business in the front, party in the back. Excited to see the final results. Thanks for the content Ryan.
Just spent the weekend doing the over seeding process, now the wait 🤞🏽
Ryan: isn’t this THE bad time of year for KBG? I’m trying to grow a small 2k patch of it next to my elsewhere 1 acre lawn of fescue. Please don’t stop growing KBG somewhere! We need you to share our struggles!
I've grown to like my tall fescue. Good stuff, Ryan! 👍
Waiting for CW to comment haha I follow both of you from the UK. Keep it going Ryan you're doing really great.
I have always liked your video format style, the zoom in views, slow rolled videos etc. I wonder what editing software you use 🤔
Love the Palisade! We'll be buying one soon.
Be patient my friend I’m sure you’ll do good I myself Am going through the same thing just put in tall fescue and KGB
I've done two Renovations at my new house the last 2 years, the turf type tall fescue really stands up to the Heat and drought conditions. And I don't even give it that much water. You're going to like it..
Love your videos and lawn stuff man. Im looking to make fun videos around my house and video my kids activities. Would a G85 from panasonic be a good start? Also what editing do you use? love your stuff , keep up the good work.
deck looks awesome Ryan
All that leveling, overseeding, nutrients, mowing.....
Ryan shows off his carpet-like grass
Worms: Hold my beer
One thing you will have to get used to with Tall Fescue, don't over water it. Deep and infrequent is the key. Once a week water. If it rains more than a tenth or so, skip that week with watering.
Yeah, in NC with all the rain this winter. It left my front lawn bald and muddy. The back yard i over seeded well in the fall and it didn't take too much of a hit from all the rain. I was thinking about switching to KBG on the front lawn this spring
Damn bro giving up on the KBG! I live in Colorado and have KBG. Let me tell you man, the summer here is all heat and no rain/humidity and it’s definitely a challenge! I’m considering sissy grass for my west facing front lawn. Ha yeah right, KBG till I die! Come dude don’t give up on it!
Man I'm jealous you have the best looking lawn
Thank you for sharing.
I think the fescue is going to be much better for you in the backyard seeing how hot it gets and the sun it gets. My front yard is like 70%KBG and like 30% TTTF and the fescue definetly withstands heat so much better, when its irrigated, it is on fire
Deck looks great!
About your allergies. I’ve heard that if you can find some local honey. The closer to your home the better. Then have a spoonful each morning it can really help. The idea is that it helps introduce plenty of local pollens into your system and can help ease their impact on you.
Ryan Knorr...The Grass whisperer... great videos your b roll rocks..
Nice deck area! Be careful w that dead valley from shed against house. Hopefully you put a good amount of flashing to prevent water damage. Looking forward to landscaping project!
I'd take a look at the HVAC code, see if you are still at minimum clearance of intake/exhaust for your area above the anticipated snow level.
I reseeded some sections again with a tall fescue/kbg mix a week ago and started seeing good germination yesterday. In a few sections I did the first time at the end of August, it's come in pretty full and looking good. Can't wait to see how it looks when more mature next season. Will it be safe to put preemergent down in the spring after a fall overseed?
Great Video Ryan. I have heard people like a thicker deck.
Can’t wait to see how the fescue looks after the first mow, just sit tight you’ll be mowing before you know it! Lol 👍🏼
Get psyched for some more bonus footie
I have been miserable the past week with allergies and I normally have it under control as well. Work is making me get a covid test tomorrow lol
Ryan - Check out Allergy Associates in La Crosse WI. I was super allergic to grass and weed pollen could barely go outside in the fall. Been taking the drops for 2 years now and this was the best fall I've ever had - no issues at all. It's definitely worth it if you want to be able to enjoy the outdoors in the spring and fall.
Ryan. I'm just wondering about your water collection this year. Last year you touched on getting ready for winter and drained it. I am wondering about if you water your back yard with it and how useful it is. I have considered having a collection tank and think it would be a great subject for a video.
I have my tall fescue(mix) in my south lawn that gets the most sun, but its also the hardest to water, so I only watered it twice all this last summer, and the only spot that didn't make it is where it is under my neighbour's tree near the street ...my KBG backyard(which actually gets the most shade and water) never went dormant, but my Rye grass mix(which gets the most noon~afternoon hot sun, and some watering when I have to) did go dormant
I noticed that it took at least an inch of water this rain less summer to keep my elite bluegrass going although it was showing signs of stress for a few weeks. Other than fescue, what might you recommend for me to overseed this with in the future to have a little more heat tolerance next summer?
No idea if this has been discussed before, but what size shed do you have to fit all that equipment? I'm gonna build a new one in the spring and was wondering.
I used to get allergy shots because I'm allergic to the world lol I feel your pain. Also what reel mower did you use in the video??
Yeah the best thing about TTTF is it ablity to handle heat and no irrigation for a while and still look decent. So its really good for people who don't want to irrigate there yards
I am not sure what's up, but we have been seeing tons of Oak saplings popping up. I tried to transplant one, because I wouldn't mind having a nice oak tree, but it didn't survive. It has been all over our metro area (Indianapolis area).
You should try a fine fescue for that back area!
This is a little off topic from the video, but I was watching your video on pre-emergent a while back and had a question. If I’m planting new seed right now, and in two weeks I put down malorgnite. With the increased growth will I be able to apply pre-emergent in the spring without harming the new grass? Temperatures right now are stable between 50-70°
We’re getting the smoke out here on Long Island too
Ryan, you're gonna fall in love with the fescue. It's the grass that will love you back rather than try to die or go dormant after a week's vacation : P
Yeah KGB is like a black car, sexy as hell but can be alot of work to keep it looking that way
After you've seeded and you see the thin spots, do you simple sprinkle more seed and water as normal or is there more of a process?
Any comment on the blend of TTTF and how low, or should I say how high, will you cut it when it grows in. Just put down an acre of GCI cool blue and will have to keep that around 3"-4", or even higher in the heat since I have no irrigation. Keep plugging man.
Ryan, I got new established turf type tall fescue that is about 21 days old now. My lawn is new with lots of bumps that I’d like to roll with the roller. How soon can I roll the new grass without damage?
Crazy, 2 years later and we are getting smoke here in the Midwest again.
I am just learning about Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass - that can apparently spread and repair itself. Have you had any experience with those varieties?
New lens looks great; noticed right away. Work out... it's worth it.
I use to have bad allergies too as I live in the Mid-Atlantic, but I've been able to control it. I take 2 pills of generic Zyrtec/Allegra everyday during allergy season. If my nose is clogged up, I use generic Flonase nasal spray. If that's not enough to stop the runny/itchy nose, I also use azelastine hydrochloride nasal spray. Also, usually Zyrtec/allegra works 90% of the time, but for the 10% when it doesn't work, I take Montelukast, which does require a prescription, but it's not hard to get a prescription for it.
Awesome! Im over the KBG too. Give me some rye!😎👊🍺
What are your thoughts on robotic mowers? I travel for work and can’t mow every day thought maybe a good robot could maintain a given height and then I can do stripes and cut to the length I like when home
Can’t wait to see the TTTF when it’s thriving!
So where did you buy your astroturf:) Amazing!
If I aerate and dethatch and cut my fescue short do I need to put a layer of top soil over my overseeding? I seen in previous videos that you didn’t
I have fake boxwood hedges on my to-do list. It's the perfect way to get outdoor privacy on a patio. You could also make an elevated flower box next to the table, then have hanging flowers from a tent gazebo over the table - similar to what you find outside of restaurants in public squares in Europe. You have a massive backyard, but in a city with houses built on top of each other, you basically need to have fake boxwood hedges for privacy.
What brand are those shorts in the video. Grass looks great!
Ryan I know this is not a Lawn Question but I like the New Palisades.....What is your thoughts on yours????
I love my Hitachi Blower by the way...Great sound too. Only negative is it sucks in my shorts on the vent side.
Hey, completely off-topic but I have a question I haven’t been able to find an answer to anywhere. I live in Alberta Canada and my lawn along with everyone else’s goes completely brown and dormant in the winter which I know is normal, and my grass will be fine. My question is, in the spring do those brown blades turn green again or does the grass grow new blades? To me it seems like the answer is it grows new blades because every spring I end up with a lot of dead material that doesn’t go away. I’m asking because I’m already looking forward to spring as my lawn is already starting to go dormant, lol. I’m just wondering if I should just scalp all the dead stuff off in the spring so I don’t get matting like I have every other year even after a good raking and don’t have so much dead material in the lawn. Thanks!
Check out living soil, also looking forward to your new fescue brotha!
Why don’t you throw some micro-clover in the seed mix in the back lot area to help with drought tolerance?
I know the feeling. Had KBG in my front yard for some years and it's been a pain to manage with the Kansas summer heat. Since it died off this summer I seeded TTTF in my front and may do the same in the back next year if doesn't fill in much more after overseeding a few weeks ago.
I have a blue grass in my backyard I am going to aerate and seed should I use perennial rye or keep the blue
In the very back why not try 50% KBG and 50% Tall Fescue? I am in northern IN and thinking about trying that.
I am over here in northern california. I live in San Mateo that is about 30 minutes south of San Francisco. It cleared up here from the fires. But some new fires started up recently again up in the north end of California at Shasta County as a person I chat with lives there and she told me. Today it smells like smoke outside even thought the skies are clear here in San Mateo. Hey? Did you know that here in San Mateo we the Playstation Corporate headquarters that is about 5 minutes from where I live? It is near Homedepot of San Mateo as well as nearby is the Visa, Corp headquarters.
I love being able to watch somebody else with the perfectionist attitude towards things. So many instances i smile nod thinking 'thank you!!' for doing/adjusting xyz to make things "just right". Lol awesome
As a small dog owner are you keeping your dogs off the back yard? I want to overseed my tall fescue/kbg back yard this winter or next spring, but if my yorkie cant go on the yard i can't do it since i don't have a front yard
The one patch of bluegrass remaining on the property, Ryan: I need to kill it all. 🤣. Hey, for a low maintenance area that’s still looking a lot better than my no maintenance side of my lawn haha! It’s been so dry here we haven’t had rain in like 3+ weeks which is odd for September. No overseeding for me this year just dethatching and fall nitrogen blitz! Trying to push that kbg hard going into fall. Anyway, should be fun to see what you end up doing in the back there whatever you decide. Heck, I’ve even been tempted to try a patch of bentgrass or something lol. Question, do you find that your ryegrass takes less water than the bluegrass to keep it from going dormant? I’ve only been irrigating twice a week here in WI during the dry months. Not a ton of water but it still got a little crispy in August.
Meanwhile im going the opposite way. No matter what elite variety of ryegrass i get every mid spring-mid summer for about 3 months it looks like crap because it goes to seed, it gets a brown tinge because of all the dead/dying seedstalks and looks like crap no matter what height you cut it at, ive tried 1", or 4" it looks bad and feels bad to walk on. Not having to deal with the constant overseeding every year is also a bonus.
What is that small handle hanging down behind your mower?
You are too cute. Your dirty secret beyond the back fence 😁 Still looks better than the neighbor's lawn 👍🏻
Lovedrug!?!?! Amazing someone knows this band. One of my favorites.
What are those very tiny piles of dirt? I seen a few in my lawn. Thank you in advance.
8:10 You got some competition across the street there!!
That's my project lawn
I was going to same the same! Good eye! And good job Mr Knorr
@@ryanknorrlawncare well no wonder it looks so good...u beat urself🤣🤣🤣
I'd like to see somebody do a tall fescue test with the big brands. An honest TF test.
Idaho Falls. Elevation 4,700 ft. Twice as high as the national average. Almost exclusively Kentucky Bluegrass. With nearly 6 months of winter, the grass looks good in late spring, then it hates the summer, then tries to recover in the short fall only to be hit by the COLD winter snows. My mission is to have a green lawn throughout the growing season INCLUDING SUMMER.
Looks like your neighbors lawn is really starting to pop! Also, even though your nextdoor neighbor was mowing his lawn like Ricky Bobby at Taladega, at least it was getting mowed and No vehicles were parked on it.
During this drought, what is your water bill looking like?
For your allergies…. Get some local, unpasteurized, local honey. Teaspoon in the morning and at night. After round four weeks your body gets used to the local pollen. Works like a charm. Do it all year round and you’ll build up the immunity.
I wanted my Midnight KBG to work so bad in the front yard, it looks incredible in the Spring and Fall but it just suffers to no end in the summer and looks miserable. I will be making a change as well!
And it really comes down to what your expectations are for it. I used to be ok with a good looking grass spring and fall but just can't handle it as much anymore haha
I have a mono stand of Midnight Blue in Northern Kentucky and it did struggle but if you water weekly it will be fine. By far my favorite cultivar! We always make sure customers have irrigation or we tell them to use TTTF.
The first step in any recovery is admitting you are addicted. Thanks Ryan
You have two reel mowers & I’m trying to find a way to justify the purchase of ONE! 😂
Lol Ryan, THIS should have been the fescue project.
IMO fescue and rye look better and are 1/3 the work. But I like having the options. Done well they all look great.
You have me concerned over the Sunny Mix from Seed Superstore I put down in my boulevard up here in South Dakota. I think it's about 60% bluegrass. I was planning on doing a whole lawn renovation with it if I like the looks, but maybe I should reconsider?
Not as hot there so you would probably do better than I do
Since the bag of tttf seed used had no logo, are you aware of the tttf cultivars?
I am 80% fescue, and love my yard, then got a dog... the fescue is the most irritating for their paws, and he has had continuous issues... any suggestions?
I'm going to fescue as well and I'm in Al.
did you get a new reel mower ?
Just shocked my k31 by withholding water and cutting short for a few weeks, and planted prg. Some variety from the local seed and feed called green emperor? 10 days from seeding and it's already looking great.
Tttf is similar to prg?
No
Whatre the holes?? I have them in Charleston
