I seeded 100% Kentucky Bluegrass and got what I deserved

  • Are you thinking about seeding KENTUCKY BLUEGRASS? Before you do, there are a few things you should know..
Kentucky Bluegrass takes forever to germinate and establish itself. Typically it can take up to 21 days for KBG to germinate and then it goes through a phase called sprout and pout where it will not grow for an extended period of time immediately after germination.
Also it takes longer to wake up in the spring time following winter. It is the end of April here in Chicago and my Kentucky bluegrass is still dormant. I applied 1 dose of granular fertilizer and one dose of liquid fertilizer so far and im starting to see some slight green up happening. For reference, my back yard which is mostly tall fescue has been actively growing and I have mowed it 3 times already.
Ever since sowing 1 pure cultivar of Kentucky bluegrass, I noticed other types of grasses invading my lawn. KBG has a very distinctive look and other grasses will stick out like a sore thumb in a pure KBG lawn. So if your neighbors allow there grass to grow long and start to grow seed heads.. Be prepared for that grass to start invading your lawn.
Kentucky Bluegrass is a very thirsty grass type. A Kentucky Bluegrass lawn needs at least 1 inch of water per week. During the hot summer weather it may need up to 2 inches or more per week. The reason it needs more water is because KBG has a much shallower root system then any of the other cool season grasses.
Another common is with Kentucky Bluegrass is fungus disease. A few common diseases that attack it are leaf spot, powdery mildew, and rust. I have powdery mildew currently and didn’t even know it until I decided to take a closer look. Fungus can be hard to identify, so if you are sowing Kentucky bluegrass make sure you keep an eye on it. Fungus usually has brown, white or damaged spots of grass with clear outlines. Don’t immediately go and start spraying fungicide if you see this… Wait to see if the spot gets bigger over a few days. If it turns out to be fungus, treat the area with a lawn fungicide. Many fungal diseases are made worse by bad watering habits, especially the fungus leaf spot in the the spring and fall when temperatures are between 60 and 80 degrees. Do not irrigate at this time unless you absolutely have to. Water during the day so the water has time to dry from the grass leaves.
The reason Kentucky is the KING of cool season grasses is its ability to spread and repair it self. The fact that it can spread and heal itself when damaged is the reason many professional sports teams seed it in their fields. It spreads underground through the production of rhizomes. Rhizomes are stems that spread horizontally right under the ground. Each rhizome produces a new sprout every couple inches along its stem from which a new Kentucky bluegrass plant forms and sprouts.

Most of my neighbors have Kentucky Blue grass and it is still dormant. I have some other grasses mixed in some rye and tall fescue I think along with Kentucky Blue grass. My mixed grass is mostly filled in and is greener than my neighbors. And like you said if different kinds of grass inadvertently get mixed in it doesn't look strange. I haven't had any problems with disease or with the drought in the area, although the Kentucky Blue Grass is a heat resistant variety. Thanks for the information you provided. There are different advantages and disadvantages to the different cool season grasses.

Great video George. I currently have common KBG in my salad bar of a lawn. I plan on over seeding with a mix/blend this fall to introduce better cultivars of KBG. We'll see how it goes. From what I've read/watched/listened to, there is a big difference in KBG cultivars from one to the other almost as big as species of grass. The type I am over seeding with is a blend of compact types (I believe America and "Aggressive"; MVS 365ss) so my common should come up in early spring with my PRG and fine fescue while the compacts will take longer but look great in the Summer vs the common type.

I live probably half-way between you and Jason. I did a very heavy de-thatch and overseeded 17,000 sq. feet of Midnight last fall, killing any tall fescue (Kentucky 31?) with Roundup as I went (there was a lot). This spring, the lawn looks great, but I've got pouty KGB in large obvious sections where all the tall fescue once was -- it's green, and I think it will fill in, but it clearly doesn't match the surrounding lawn.
At the start of this month, I core-aerated and did another overseeding with Midnight. The plan is to do at least one more overseeding this fall with the hope of establishing Midnight as the dominant grass, using Roundup in the fall whenever I find any invading grass. If things won't blend together after a few years, I'll start overseeding rye grass and just give up on the project -- or sell the house. It's always good to have a Plan B and Plan C. :)

I did a few areas of a Midnight KBG monostand starting fall of 2023. I can confirm pretty much everything you've stated as accurate as of this spring (2024). I have some powdery mildew, and am having some trouble areas with shade which are letting weeds creep due to lack of filling in. Despite all its flaws, it has quite a bit of redeeming qualities, but I think ultimately it needs to be paired with something that is shade tolerant, disease resistant, and perhaps longer roots like a fescue to make it less maintenance. If you have any suggestions for pairing it with a similar look, let me know!

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Hard to tell George. I put it down on an already thick established lawn. We just had rain for the first time the other day. Had not rained here for a few weeks. My lawn just really greened up over the last few days. It was spotty green which is normal for KBG in early spring. I have cut it a few times but just once a week. I mowed last Friday night. It rained heavy Saturday night into Sunday morning and just with that it greened up Sunday into Monday and it needed another cut. I cut it last night again. I’m cutting at 1 inch so it looks as if going forward I’ll be mowing twice a week. The reel mower really makes it pop. I’m excited for this season with it being the first full season reel mowing.

Just did a full renovation on my lawn last fall with Seed Super Store's SS5000 mix (Mazama+Midnight+ Blue bank KBG, Radar chewings fescue, Grand slam PRG) and it's slow to get going here in North Central MA (temps in the 30s at night last week) so I'm getting antsy seeing my neighbors mowing their PRG lawns already.
I know it'll come but I'm dying to get them stripes going!

i have mignight kbg on all my sunny areas. Mazama in my shady spots. year 2 and 3 you'll experience earlier greenup. 1.75" in the backyard , 3.25" in the front yard. I agree it is such a hassle. I'm on year 3 it still doesn't spread as much as id like it to. the pro plugger is king. I just sprayed a propacanasole app ,starting to get warm wet nights.

I'm taking my lawn in the opposite direction. I'm an exterminator, and I noticed that the lawns with a single species of grass really show the Vole damage, but the yards with a variety of grasses and broad-leaf plants still have voles, but it doesn't stick out. So I bought a couple of pounds of a variety of native ground cover seeds and I'm going to see if I can have a beautiful but unconventional lawn that doesn't take much work. If it looks good, the city can't say diddly. Grass mono-culture takes too much work.

@@harryharry3193 Sorry bro, I'm a professional exterminator, and voles don't eat grubs. They may eat the occasional cricket or something, but they are mostly herbivorous. Even moles prefer earthworms over grubs.

KBG is king for sure. My lawn is a mix of rye blue and fescue and I've mowed 8 times this year. Yes you saw that right 8. I mow 2× a week( Mondays and Thursdays) whether it needs it or not. I think the upper 80's today will get it kicking and growing in rabbit mode 😂

I started giving a rip about my 2 acre yard about 2 years ago. I can tell you that my tall fescue has taken ahold and yeah I laid blue grass sod and yeah that grass is crap for patches of fungus. I over seeded that with more Fescue, and a mixed bag of stuff. Hope to mix in multiple grass so the patches go away.

Rhizing Moon TTTF is amazing instead of Midnight KBG or at least combined with. Most of the Cons you listed are all non-existent with Rhizing Moon and you get similar color, texture and it’s RTF so the rhizome root structure allow for self healing. Awesome options
