What's crazy is the 4.7 Cherokee that came out 3 years later was 1.2 liters smaller, with 20 more HP and same torque.
And was also a POS
@@NWI_Steel how so?... Mines got 230k and just did a 4000 mile road trip, rock crawled up a mountain pass on stock radial tires and drove back?... Traded it for 2 jetskis 10 years ago and hasn't had a single issue.
Why is that "crazy?" It's called progress.
@@sidefx996 because it's 4 years later.
The Ranger and Frontier were both under 100 ft!! 😂😂.
Glad to see the 5.9 ZJ getting some much needed love. I love mine!
I have a 5.2 v8 but i hear the 5.9 can go right into it. Thats what i may do with mine or just Ls swap it. Ill see what i want then ill go with the answer
@@22lrjayden81 i just did a 5.9 swap on my 97 5.2 zj! it went pretty flawless as long as you have a later year with the new computer it should all work plug n play. BALANCING IS DIFFERENT!! harmonic balancer and flexplate weights.
@@xthral awesome, mine is a 1998 so its the last year they made the zj before 1999 when they went to the WJ models
I remember those 5.9 Grand Cherokee’s they were the fasted SUV 0-60 at the time. 6.9 seconds. They were the before SRT.
Noooo the Durango R/T was!!
If at the time was the 90s.. then the Gmc typhoon was like 0-60 in 5.5
@@jonathancrews169 True I forgot about those, they where very quick!
@@jl456 I’m just going by what Jeep advertising stated in 98. .
They’re slow lol the 911 is faster in the real world. The 5.9 magnum falls on its face after 2nd gear, runs out of horsepower.
These 5.9 ZJ's are TANKS the 46RE, 44a Rear end, bullet proof Magnum engine. I miss mine for sure.
I have had 4 different 5.9 GCs all built differently, my current one has a cam, different injection system and intake, headers and full custom exhaust and 4:10 gears on 31s for now, definitely the one that will put a smile on your face. I’m in Colorado Springs would bring mine up if you wanted to do a drag race stock vs modified.
Email them! I'm sure they would love that
Yeah I've had a couple of the 5.9. GC cutting out the catalyst and changing the air intake would really wake it up.
Did you build it yourself? I have a JC from 2000. Curious on how to add mods to it, but I don’t know who to call for the job.
I’m in Pueblo! I have a sequoia. Let’s hit the trails!!!
Colorado springs in the house
Y'all need to find a GMC Typhoon or Syclone to drag race
Dakota rt
Hell yea, my buddy bought a new one back then & I was so jealous because it blew the doors off my '88 Trans Am GTA 5.7 in the short runs but over long distance my GTA topped out at 160 where his Syclone quit at 130 but it was still a bad ass truck
@@nadronnocojr Had a new one of those too but was stolen in '98
@@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman my buddy in highschool had a typhoon and we had a lot of fun in that thing. Its launch was unmatched with all wheel drive.
@@ntme6506 I was 25 when the Typhoon was new & it was just a beast like the 1989 20th anniversary Turbo Trans Am & the 1987 Buick Grand National GNX! I had a 1983 burgundy/silver Buick Regal Ttop Ttype & a 1978 gold Ttop Z28 in high school & I saved enough money 3 years after graduation that I bought myself the black/gold GTA as a graduation present! Yea those all wheel drives came out the dig like its ass was on fire!
That 5.9 with the right tune was a mega sleeper.
Nope lol. Still slow as hell.
Mine is tuned, has an aftermarket intake, 52mm TB, cat delete and 3" out the back. It's no racecar by any means, but it'll smoke the 33's on it in 2wd. It's 242 swapped.
When I had my 5.9, I always saw Renault Fuego influences in the styling (although they had different designers - the AMC - Renault legacy was still showing) ... not a bad thing. The Fuego looked futuristic in its day.
The Dakota was also available with the 5.9 V8, and that was a riot!
I remember that. If I remember correctly they damn near had to grease it up and wedge it in with a shoe horn. LOL!!
@@jbandt yup… it was fantastic! Only pickup 🛻 that was better was the 2000 Ford F-150 Lightning… that was seriously fast 💨
I have an rt and it walks all over lightnings all the time, especially in the turns .. like mustang and Camaro. The mustang could NOT go around a turn on rails
@@jbandtactually, the v8 fit great under the hoods on the dakota’s easier to wrench on then any other midsize truck.
A friend of mine in highschool had one of these ZJ 5.9's and man was it fun! We put a lift and some nice tires on it and made a side exit exhaust for it, thing sounded awesome and was a rocket to us kids who didn't know any better lol.
I really like that generation / style of Jeep GC. I had a 318 V8. It was fantastic, but man did it drink gas.
Had one too and it was AWD. Stayed at the gas station!
My 99 Ram Sport with the 318 and 6” lift, 35” tires, one ton axels is really hard on gas!!!
I remember dreaming for this to be my first vehicle, almost got one but the person backed off on the deal last minute. The zj will always be my favorite gen grand Cherokee despite the terrible transmissions and electrical issues lol
I remember these. I also remember my 20th birthday in 1998 when I took a brand new ‘98 Grand Cherokee Limited for an extended test drive from the dealer all over town, it was loaded and beautiful. It had the 5.2 V8 but that also definitely made the whole thing rock with torque.
I love the first generation Grand Cherokee. Had 2 identical 1997 Grand Cherokee TSi 4.0 6 years apart. Then had a 2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo til 2019. Great, reliable transportation, fun to drive and easy to work on.
I had a 99 Durango with the 5.9 and I raced one of these at a streetlight and it kicked my ass
Yeah the 5.9 is a dog…. The 911 driver let the Cherokee take that first race lol
I think the whole point of this vid is to get the auction price up...
My mom had ordered one in 98 before the limited came out. It was a tsi. With awd and 318. And I can honestly it was my favorite suv. Right up until the modern era.
My friend had the exact one. We launched it so many times we broke the mount on the driver's seat. It really did throw you back in the seat.
I had a ZJ just like this one (5.9) ... wish I had kept it. It needed a couple thou worth of work - so I let it go, but it was formidable (if not a bit heavy - especially compared to the WJ that followed it - which had a frame co-engineered by Porsche interestingly enough - look it up if you doubt my word :) The WJ Grand Cherokee were also built by Magna Steyr in Austria for the EU market.
I had a 2000 GC with the 4.7 and that was a beast. Quick and the second extra gear was a nice touch. Unfortunately it spent more days at the dealer than driven. My wife’s 2013 GC hemi has been problem free and awesome. The tranny is slow with the hemi compared to the 8 speed after. Still a great Jeep.
I love that they mentioned that engine is from the Ram trucks as I drive a 94Ram 2500 with the 5.9 360 V8 and even in my truck it makes power all over the place.
I had nachos for dinner last night
I remember the ad for this SUV in national geographic! It proudly advertised that is was the fastest in the world with a 7 ish second 0-60 time and a trick awd system
My 6th grade teacher had one of the 5.9 grand Cherokee, and she had no idea how special it was back then! She was so surprised I thought her jeep was sweet!
Love these videos, great job guy's.
I have a 2019 Ford F250, a 1997 F150, a 1998 5.9 l Cherokee, and an Infiniti G37. That Jeep is fun. Like crazy fun. I'm not going to say it is as fast as the Infiniti but it's a lot closer than it should be. You get out onto a dirt road and this thing shines. We spent our first weekend with it pulling people out of the snow in their brand new expensive rigs. Hold out a Toyota Tundra like it wasn't even there in two feet of snow. Driving at 40 miles an hour in a place and time that no one has any business going that fast. I f****** love that Jeep.
You are welcome for your support. Love all your content
Years ago I had a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 4.7 HO, Quadradrive, and Towing package. I always thought it felt quick for what it was.
My best friends parents had one of these. Theres was all time all wheel drive and thats why they emded up selling it i think. But they pulled sooo much things with that from trucks in snow, trees and there backhoe and bobcat when they got stuck!
I had one of the OGs, a 1973 Cherokee with the 360 4bbl 4wd with 33s
Yeah but that was an AMC 360 though or did you put a Chrysler 360 in it??
@@extremedrivrIt was AMCs tall deck 360, the same engine they used in the AMX & the Rebel just detuned by '73! Fun fact, it was also the same engine that was in the '74 Bricklin for 1 year {the same car used in The Junkman 1982 [HB Halicki from Gone in 60 Seconds 1974]}! The 360 has the distinction of being the last AMC motor built as Chrysler used it in the Grand Wagoneer until 1991! I had that Cherokee for 38 yrs along with my 1976 Jeep CJ 304 4bbl 3sp {got them both as a senior in high school} & just sold both a couple yrs ago
Love me some ZJ 5.9l. Mine was 32k fully loaded in ‘98. Still have it. But did full exhaust, intake, intake manifold, stroke, cam, throttle body. Makes over 400hp. But sadly it is still relatively slow. 0-60 in 5.8s. Was expecting better. Haven’t changed the gearing yet. Hopefully I pick up another half a second to sixty, but the week link is the 4 speed transmission with massively long gears - Compared to my Trackhawk with an 8 speed transmission. Yes, I have a 5.9 and a Trackhawk. Love both frankly.
Throw a 78/75 on it. It'll wake up then.
@@racerx250 A 78/75 what?
@@marcmartino476 78/75 is the size of a turbo. VS racing makes a few that are top performers.
@@racerx250 Interesting, I will check them out. Thanks.
I remember these quite well. My friends brother and sister had matching set.
Man, I really wish they made a Jeep XJ with that engine, would’ve been perfect for me!
Gotta say, the torque per weight is more important in everyday traffic than overall speed. Hugging the corners with the porche is sweet though.
I love these tests, but the 911 is literally one of the finest overall driver's cars of all time with a fun factor that's off the charts. Drag racing one of them is like drowning your fillet mignon from Ruth's Chris Steakhouse in a gallon of ketchup. Not to mention the fun (and expense) of dropping the engine for a clutch replacement, lol. Keep up the good work.
I remember that jeep. But I only ever saw 1 come into our shop for some maintenance. It had a very throaty exhaust but I never test drove it.
I had a 98 GC that had the quadratrac full time awd, and it had the 318, which was a 5.2L i think, it was quick AF off the line
In Venezuela it was manufactured with a 5.8 and the launch was amazing, it was a really fast SUV
The most impressive thing about the grand Cherokee is that it hasn’t been to the crusher yet.
Wish I was near these guys I have a Grandnational and a gmc typhoon would love for them to do a drag race with those 2.
Those 5.9l Jeep Grand Cherokees were awesome!
I love my zj 5.9l. Also have a wk1 srt8 but still the zj is still my favorite.
I remember dreaming about being able to afford one of those 5.9 grand Cherokees! They were badass for their day! They were faster than a LOOOT of the cars back then.
Nope the 5.9 is a turd lol.
Faster than 5.0 explorers?
@@speedracerjeff they definitely are but for back then it was pretty stout.
@@angelgjr1999 yeah by a good chunk. The 5.0 explorer was roughly the same weight and only made around 210hp and quite a bit less torque.
@@cfltitanif you were around in like 2019 and before you could’ve picked one of those 5.9 zjs up for like $10k with around 20-30k miles on it
I had that grand cherokee in green. When I was done with it I gave it to my grandmother and it lasted until she was unable to drive
You had a 5.9 in green? Did you paint it?
@TCB84 no original paint green with gold lettering
@@Tony-hf9mv Interesting. Didn't know they made the 5.9 in green.
Seems like car auction websites are now a must have for every big car related CZcams channel.
I own one these jeeps, hard to find nowa days and it’s still very quick for it’s year, lots people get surprised when they hear that it’s a v8
Not forgotten...my friend and I took his Godmother's out for a drive in Highschool and I will never forget it...
Tommy is like : dude I almost had you lol
I had a 2000 Durango with the 5.9 thing was a beast
I got a 5.9 98 love it I'm getting a new cat and imma be back to rumbling propr
Wonder whether its worth showing the ET's corrected for altitude in future shows...Just a thought
Ive had my 5.9 ZJ for 13 years now... I also have a 90 Grand Wagoneer for 5 years now. Love them both to death... only issue today.. is long distance driving kills me on gas costs.. it really does hurt when you have say a long distance relationship where you live an hour or so away... my wagoneer takes 50$ in gas to drive to my gf both ways and the ZJ is 30$. I need a 3rd fuel efficient car lol.. but its just so much fun cruising in a Zj or wagoneer
I remember these in high school my boy had one and we smoked a mustang gt of
That year and a Camaro ss brand new cars and couldn’t beat the truck lol never forget the feeling of that truck that’s why Iam all mopar for life and mind u that was in 2003/04 last years of high school
That Jeep is putting out the same power as my '73 Duster 340 did.
Had a Dakota r/t with the 5.9. Nice truck
I had the 1998 limited 4.0 v6 and was pretty good
I like it but for the year it feels old to current traffic sold it 👍👍👍
It’s funny because that Porsche 911 sounds worse than my lawnmower 😂
I have the dakota rt with the same 5.9 and mustangs and camaros are always surprised when i keep up.😂
I own a 98 2500 ram with the 5.9 setting on forty’s 530 gears that make me feel like a teenager again. I also have a stock 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 hemi all wheel drive that is by far fastest vehicle I have ever owned.
04s dont have the 5 7, u mean an 05?, 04s would have the 4 7
@@pinesurf1 that is very possibly
It would be fun to see a modern Grand Cherokee 3.6 V6 vs older V8 Jeep or Porsche etc. older muscle cars even. Modern base family SUV is somewhat quick etc.
A RAV4 Prime would spank it off the line.
Love the 5.9LM! I still have vids of mine on my page.
You guys should find one of my vehicles, 99 explorer with the 5.0. Awd or rwd
Moral of the story Turbo or Supercharge EVERYTHING.
I hate to say it. Being a long time Chrysler and now Stellantis hater. The drag race and braking test were impressive.
Love the Jeep!!!!
I lived at 9000 feet above sea level (Toluca, MEX) with my Shelby GLHS for years. My speed secret was to get to sea level (Acapulco). My GC is a 2014 diesel, not fast. I guess you get used 17's in the 1/4 at high altitude
Not sure how rare those were in the states but 5.9 limited are pretty common in Canada - sick little rigs
In California it’s not uncommon to see limtied versions of them. Also Lots of zj driving around with 5.2
3:33 "It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning's winning"
"this jeep grand Cherokee was the world's fastest SUV"
GMC typhoon:
"Excuse me what the fuck?"
I have a turbo from a Saab on my 5.9 tuned with mega squirt
I'm a huge zj fan and finally got a 5.9 limited two years ago I absolutely love my Jeep and could never imagine selling her. I kick 90s mustangs and Camaros a#$es all the time. I did a 242 transfer case swap and love smoking tires when I can afford the premium gas it requires.
I've got a spare pcm with a flyin Ryan 93 tune on it I'll sell ya at a reasonable price.
@@racerx250 I also have the 93 octane tuned pcm with the stock as a backup. Thank you anyway.
v8 sound 🤩
Have a 5.2 l and gotta tell ya, a real beast, but where i live (not usa), is very hard to find quality parts for it.
Right now struggling to find new quality injectors...
Kind of wish I had the spare coin to get this. Think it would be cool to get a 20 year old car that still in decent shape, put some TLC into it and make it a fun driving car.
Do it and enjoy it. My boss said when I asked, "you only live once".
Last February I picked up a 2004 Corvette with 97k miles for under $14k, at a local-to-me used car lot with a clean title and a decent Carfax report, not perfect, but decent.
Not a garage queen but driven around and enjoyed. It's a nice looking car with bright red paint, red seats, and red carpet, yes lot's of bright torch red. To buy an older Vette like that, there's usually some nice new parts and all the BS stuff that fails has already been fixed. The car had a couple different things fixed that were under open recall that usually will make this car inoperable, by the previous owners.
It's still a "fast car" with a 350hp LS1 aluminum V8, transmission is in the rear of the car so almost 50/50 weight split front to rear. Parts are cheap and the C5 Corvette is known to be fairly reliable with out known major engine or transmission issues and falling apart like some cars do.
Before you buy an older discontinued car model, see what parts are available to fix it.
The C5 Corvette still has a HUGE after market support and parts availabilty for a few more years.
That suxks I was hoping the 5.9 would stay on the channel a bit longer, ZJs don't get a ton of mainstream automotive love.
We had the one with a 5.2 it was a runner
I owned a 1998 5.9 grand Cherokee and that thing ripped
My son had a 95 grand Cherokee with the 5.9. that thing was pretty fast to be stock that all wheel drive made it jump out like a big bullfrog on the line !!!
That was a lame start from Tommy.
🤣 yea a little underwelming
Yeah he fluffed that launch on purpose or something. The 911 is not that slow off the line.
He almost stalled 😂
The whole thing was lame and played out
Give him a break. He got CUJO’d by a “Blaze” recently.
That cherokee had the same drive train as the dodge Dakota R/T 5.9 and the Durango R/T 5.9
You're half right. Grand cherokee and the durango rt had the same exact drivetrain, the dakota rt was only rear wheel drive.
Different diffs Chrysler 9 1/4 with 3.92 ratio used in the Dakota’s, and Durango’s.
Dana 44 in the rear on the Jeep and some of the jeeps have aluminum center sections on the Dana 44.
I'm really curious how my '60 vw split bus would perform in this kind of drag race ;-)
13mpg of premium chugging V8 Jeep. Love it.
13 downhill with a tailwind
Hey thats my jeep! But mine has long arms ,slip yoke, woods shafts, upgraded brakes, modifyed rockers, 33s and souped up for off roading lol
You know you want the 4.0L when you can get one. These 5.9s used to be on Craigslist all day long back in the day.
Emphasis on “back in the day”
I'm confused on one issue?... I own a 98 jeep grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited and I have a 242 transfer case.... I can shift into 2 wheel drive, but his is listed as full time 4wd and states they all are that way?... Is that correct?... If he could have have been in 2 wheel drive, the roll on race would have been much different!
I had a 94 orivs edition with a 5.9
Back then we called it a 360 even if it said 5.9L on the badge
I used to turn my face around when seeing the Jeep somewhere
The seats were very confortable
98 jeep limited 5.9 vs 03 durango 5.9 R/T would be an amazing race
Hey! I just got one for my first car!
You are giving the Jeep an additional weight penalty. Switch drivers! LOL
You should find the kid with the rwd 8speed swapped jeep commander he has designed his own adapter plate to mount the new 8speed to the first of the new 5.7's it's a beast and it'll be the one you find when Google searching tuned commander
That was the softest take off from a Porsche I ever seen
and they brought out the n/a soft top to boot 💀
My buddy had the dodge Durango with the 5.9
I love my 100k mile 4.0 zj with 242 t case
I bet the jeep would be a beast with a Supercharger bigger injectors cam and intercooler still would be a beast of a sleeper.
4:55 "Wall aerodynamics", "Cruise Ship Wheight" with long automatic 90's transmission.... LoL
Please do the 6.1 srt8
Those 360s get it
It's funny to see what used to be considered fast. We have minivans now that run low 14s and would out perform sports cars from the past I'm pretty much all aspects.
The good old 360
The dodge durango rt had the 5.9 too
