Man the c4 vette is so overlooked. Totally awesome.
Facts... I've noticed more people are taking notice of the c4. Lot of people ask me questions about it when I take mine out on nice days
I never appreciated them until I road in one at an autocross. It was really good, the handling was impressive, particularly the raw grip. Today I'm still of the opinion that the C4 is the best looking Corvette, sharp yet clean.
I have a 96 LT-1 and it's an awesome car.
@@kirkcunningham6146 it is!!!!!
and its not even the best version of the c4. Wish it wouldve atleast been an LT1
I forgot that BMW once made attractive cars.
They still do
It wasn't the 6-series.
Overpriced JUNK!
@@chrismalcomb3387 what do you drive?
E28 5 series fantastic cars
A handling comparison would have been extremely interesting on these.
Considering in this era the 4 door BMW M5 was named Road & Track's "best handling car in the world at any price" I don't think it would even be a comparison. BMW was beating Ferrari and Porsche in handling for most of this period of time.
@@SecretlySeven The C4 was also one of the best handling cars at this time. I don't think the BMW is faster, due to smaller tires and softer suspension.
The M5 had better balance and made a better track car than the M6. The old M5 would definitely give that vette a run for it's money around a short track with lots of turns, I don't think the M6 would. I've driven both extensively.
@@LordHolley Put them on the Ring. Wouldn't even be a comparison.
@@SecretlySeven dude idk. The chorvette has massive wheels, is lighter is lower to the ground and has stiffer sway bars. I think the c4 would be faster but the BMW would be more fun
In the early 1990s we did a 383 conversion (back then it meant a 400 crank & .030 overbore) on an '88 'vette with a mild cam and pump gas compression ratio, put a good exhaust on, and added a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Ran mid-12s at sea level, got nearly 35 MPG at 65 MPH, and topped out at over 185 MPH. Old school tech, but really turned it into a sleeper that gave the exotics a run for their money at the time.
35mpg with a mild cam 383 corvette. That mpg territory of a Toyota Corolla or Honda civic...
That engine is so understressed on the highways
That’s a good looking BMW and it seems super nice to drive, but can we appreciate how consistently great that C4 is?! It’s amazing they’re still such a good deal.
The ‘88 C4 would run a 14.3 at 95 in the 1/4 at sea level. It’s losing 2 seconds due to the altitude. I own one and it’s a blast to drive and very quick for its age. I love those old M cars but I guarantee they’ve spent at least twice what Kase paid for the C4 in repairs on that M6 over the years.
Crazy MotorWeek 85 when the TPI first came out they put the manual against the auto and the auto I believe the 13.6 or 7 in the quarter compared to the Doug Nash which did the exact quarter mile you just mentioned
I had a '88 GTA Trans Am with the L98. Best I ran at sea level was 14.8 at I think 91 MPH. Not crazy fast, but that low end torque of the L98 made it so much fun to drive on the street. Case is spot on with what he said about torque.
@@trailrunnah8886 Exactly. This iteration of the Corvette did low 14s all day with a competent driver. The altitude and lack of driving skill (to be fair, most regular dudes are just average manual drivers) come into play here.
yeah its nuts i ran a 12.8 at 109 stock in my N. even on the street with a lot of spinning I still did a 13.3
@@en_noah4615 how did you achieve that stock that's way faster than a Civic Type R
I love the L98, it's one of my favorite engines. Not a ton of horsepower, but that torque comes at like 2800 RPM, it's so great to drive on the street. Case is 100% correct, you drive torque, and torque wins street races.
That stuff sounds good... but when I had a 2010 Mustang GT with the 3v 4.6 that thing put BUS lengths on my L98 C4 from a dig or a roll.. and the C4 makes more torque.
Back when BMW made amazing looking cars.
I had an '84 633 csi. Loved that car! So good for highway cruising. It got 26 MPG at 75 MPH on trips. I think the best looking BMW ever made. Beauty and practicality. I'm excited to see more videos with the 6 series.
The Shark! It was a great car.
633? thats an ODD engine, at least to us here in Europe. here the CSi was available in 628 and 635 versions!
@@petelattimer6808 Maybe only for the American market. The M6's were 3.5 liters.
@@petelattimer6808 Maybe BMW only made the 3.3 liter inline 6 for the American market.
@@stevevice9863 Yes. the 3.2L in the 533i and 633csi was a bit more displacement and lower compression and with a catalytic converter in the USA - Europe's 528i and 628csi were of similar power outputs - but no catalytic converter and higher compression.
This really shows the winning formula Chevrolet has had for so long with the Corvette: performance value for the money. If you can find an old Vette that hasn’t been flogged to death you just get so much for a reasonable price. But man, that 6 Series is such a classic! It just screams money & style, and the performance is good for an 80s car. I’ve always loved the E24s. You can see why BMWs became status symbols in the 80s.
Those Elantra N's are pretty nice but you can get a pretty quick used BMW for way less than those. Of course...you will probably have BMW problems, too.
You will definitely have BMW problems😂
Yea but you'll have more problems with the Elanta. I'd rather have the BMW. Plus much better build quality with the BMW
Trust me, you don't want BMW problems. Straight up money pit.
My first M6 drive was in a grey market version, and it was such a joy to drive (but it was clearly not designed for American highway speeds...it definitely is geared for the top end).
The M6 lineage began in 1983 with the M635CSi model of the E24 6 Series range, which was powered by the M88/3 DOHC straight-six engine (which was a modified version of the engine used in the BMW M1 supercar). In most countries, the model was badged the M635CSi, however the equivalent model in North America and Japan was simply badged in "M6"
"Don't matter if u win by an inch or a mile winning is winning" 🤣 that was a good fun race to watch...go c4
Easley the factory tuned port injection runs out of breath around 4800 rpm due to the narrow 17 inch long runners. Not much aftermarket support for intakes either. Call TPIS , they used to make a wider runner and get it extrude honed as well as the base manifold. For the plenum you can remove throttle body and there is a small walk you can grind out that GM put there as a silencer. Don't waste your money on cam swaps or cylinder heads until you do some changes to that intake
That's a beautiful M6. It's hard to believe how expensive they were back in the 80's but even a base 633 was in the $40s.
Prime examples of a classic M6 can go over $ix figures.
An L98 C4 is such a good car. Reliable, light, fun driving dynamics, loads of power at most normal around town speeds... TARGA top... EASY to mod, and cheap. It amazes me they continue to be so undervalued.
Beautiful cars. The massive imbalance between HP and TQ on the 5.7l just illustrates how ridiculous the fuel-economy focused tuning on these early C4's was.
You guys(and Brendan) are my favorite TFL channel. This is the future of car reviews and car content. I like how you are not afraid to show your little mis-speaks and mistakes, makes it more personable than a fully polished and over edited "mainstream" review/comparison. Keep it up.
Should have used the more powerful european spec M635csi which was factory rated at 286 hp weighed 3307 lbs and used the M88 motor straight from the M1 with factory headers and stiffer shocks and lower springs.
Should have used the C4 ZR1 with the 4cam 32valve V8 and rated between 375 to 405hp. Too extreme? Fine. Get the LT4 V8 which was rated at 300hp stock and 330hp in the final GS trim.
Why would a US based webshow use a Euro spec car?
LOVE how the hood opens on the C4 Corvette, allowing you to access EVERYTHING.
The throttle-bodies on that BMW are just, wow. Beautiful.
The difference is the Elantra won’t be running in 35 years to be able to do a comparison between old and new cars.
the hyundai comes with 35 year warranty as standard
True because people are actually going to drive it not put it in a garage.
I don't think there will be many new ICE cars in 35 years time to compare this Elantra with.
@@NoPrivateProperty 😂😂
How many 80s econoboxes are on the road today? Very very few. Corvettes and M cars get kept up and babied, that's why they're still around.
Great video guys 👍🏻👍🏻.
I talk about this all the time how far cars have come in the past 30-40 years. I'm quite a bit older than you two probably closer to Roman's age so I lived the 80's, 70's & some of the 60's, I had a new 1987 mustang GT.
It really is impressive. Not only performance but also safety and reliability. We averaged around 25-30 deaths per 100,000 people every year until it started to decline in the 70s. We've been around 11-12 deaths per 100,000 people/yr. since 2009 to today. Cut it down by over half!
I love those old 6 series cars. BMW I6s are great engines too.
I just can't get enough of these comparisons! Keep them coming! I love the Corvette but I'm a sucker for that 635 M!!
I think the 80's bmw were the best looking.
Had to loop that 80's tune from the beginning. Great content! For those interested in the song: Mattie Maguire - Look Where That Got You
The vettes output almost matches the L31 for the trucks/vans/SUVs in the mid-late 90s
One of the best videos to date, editing and content! Keep up the great work on the classics channel guys!
Thanks a ton!
Love this episode. C4 is my favorite generation of Corvettes
I’m torn between the C3 and C4 but yes I agree very attractive model.
@@irishuwould5185Yeah if I had one to daily, it would definitely be the C4, but the C3 is such an incredibly beautiful car!
Now remember that in 1992 a base C4 made 300 HP. And there was a ZR-1. Those were going after 911 Turbos not BMWs.
Lots of Videos out there showing the C4 is still relevant, and this is one of them. Sure, the interior is lousy, but the powertrains...you could drive them hard again and again and again, and it would take it. Modern cars like that Elantra, are a different story.
These sport car videos are top notch. I love watching these. you guys do such an entertaining job. It helps that i love corvettes....
Those spoilers on the BMW windshield wipers are there to keep the wipers on the windshield at speed. The wipers will start to lift off the windshield above the century mark.
This is actually very interesting. Crazy comparison. Thank you for this.
One thing I noticed about the c4, they're great cars, but shops are definitely scared of wrenching on them. Had a 96 a few months ago, no one wanted to touch the LT1 lol
LT/LS motors are the easiest to work on lol tells me a lot about your “mechanics”
That's why I can and I will do literally any to my 85 corvette, I don't trust any of the shops around
Optispark I assume?
You keep mentioning the 100 extra ft lbs of torque, but no one has mentioned the extra 2.2 liters of displacement. So considering the Bimmer's 400 lbs heavier with a much smaller engine, is a real testament to the European's ability to squeeze HP per liter.
Fun stuff guys! 3 good comparison units. Keep it up.
So much fun to watch guys. I am totally digging that Corvette and it was cool to see it compared to a new car. Great video guys. This drag race thing is a hit with me. Thanks
I live in Colorado and have and Elantra N DCT. They are quick cars. They are pretty much sleepers as no one thinks they are as quick as they are.
How about late adding 90s-mid 2000s JDM to these old car tests to mix it up? I'd love to see how my 05 RSX Type S stacks up (CO as well)
Now there's a great idea for sure would get tonnes of views.
2 of my favorite kind of cars. 80s Corvettes and BMWs. Great video.
At Toronto Motor Sport park, I'm pulling 16.9 sec in 205/55/16 snow tires in my base Civic LX Sedan (which can get 55mpg in slow cruise on the highway). If you want a quick car, just drive down to sea level.
an na v8 vs an na i6, impressive that the m6 even held up considering the higher weight and smaller displacement motor
It’s because BMW is good at two things. Underreporting their horsepower and putting their power to the ground.
Next time try a 1990 Corvette ZR1..."about" the same horsepower as the new Hyundai, and I heard that a lot of grandmothers liked the ZR1...you know, for it's smooth road comfort as they drive to church. I'm not sure, but I think the ZR1 was like a base car or something. Underpowered and all. I think the Hyundai would have a shot. Trust me! Try it.
Awesome video !! I have 2 c4s but am not fond of early c4s, namely anything with an L98 or earlier engine and the pre 90 interior. the transmission in that is atrocious. I couldnt fathom owning a transmission called a Doug Nash rofl. Still that was good fun great job !
The Corvette will Cruz at 135 mph at 3k rpm and feel like your doing 85mph . Ac on Bose stereo kick n , hold it to the floor 155 -165 mph on top end and stable.
That M6 is stunning.
Finally a channel racing real world classics. Keep it up, get more classics! Build this channel...I subscribed.
Nice review and vid 👌🏽
Love the C4. Used to have one, same color, but with a 32v engine. It was a beast. I miss it. The M6 is a classic too, but I am amazed at how slow these cars are. What is the music at 5:17?
Love the 1/4 mile racing!!
yep, definitely needed a small track test to test cornering. I love me some corvette, but not sure it would come out on top
C4 Corvettes, even by today's standards, handles extremely well.
Best looking wheels for that Gen corvette! Love the vids
Very enjoyable video! As someone who owns a Corvette (C6), I was always puzzled by the lack of love for the C4, which I think has a sharp, clean-looking design and, as this video demonstrates, plenty of performance. What is amazing, however, is that if you look at the inflation-adjusted price, a new C8 has a lower list price than the C4 did. This says a lot about modern manufacturing efficiency. Oh, and I also have a BMW and as much as I like the M6, there is no way I would take that now-ancient grand tourer on a long tour. It might be worth four times what the C4 is but repair costs will be of a factor much higher.
I agree, great comment, vastly under appreciated C4.. remember it trounced the Porsches 29-0 in SCCA championship.
Was this the M6 that was up for auction in Longmont, CO?
There is a trick though with the modern small turbo engine, and that is that there won't be any tests about them 30 years from now 😂😂
Youll still see plenty of 4cyl Honda turbo cars 30 years from now....most of them will be well over 600hp by then tho lol
The L98 Corvette specs for 1988 are 240hp @ 4300 rpm 340lb-ft @ 3200.
Love these kind of races
Please do more new cars vs old. Can we see a table of timings?
C4 is a overlooked ride by many. It was cool to see these comparisons
A 36xx lb GT vs a 32xx lb sportscar?
These guys basically reproduced what a period comparison test would’ve found.
Awesome channel and content as usual from the TFL crew!
there should be a test along windy (winding, curvy) roads.
My 2009 Cobalt SS turbo with a slipping clutch ran 14.01 at 106 I tore it down and realized it was only dripping off of maybe a quarter inch of the clutch due to a poor plywood
Wow, this is a great video! Very nicely made! Im now a subscriber.
Y’all should try a retro turbo car against the Hyundai, like the srt-4 neon, base prices was 20k 215 hp lol but 13sec in the 1/4 mile I think
It would be interesting to take all three to, say, Laguna Seca and see how they stack up when cornering comes into play.
C4 had a lateral-g of 0.9
Now you have to race a c 8 against the Elantra and see how that goes. Great video.
Yeah if you look hard enough you can find a decent condition C4 for a tenth of the price of that Elantra 😂
You guys make some excellent content, a joy to watch on this very cold day.
Whoever picked the music during the races totally outdid themselves !!!
Well done
Try that vs the later model LT1s . But the beemer had the better horn.
I actually love the showcasing of the c4. Wish you would have gotten a manual 89 or manual 96. It would have made for better testing
Also... please test the steerimg on some capacity
You’re doing the most with the cars you’ve got. Cool budding channel!
Hahah, love the soundtrack, felt like I was watching Iron Eagle
Love both of these beautiful classics.
Masive ROAR of vette is legendary 🙂
Very nice comparison.
Hey guys use next time an '88 Fiero GT with 5 speed getrag. That'll be interesting.
To launch the corvette it's almost with the 2nd gear to make the wheels spinning less, thanks for your content
I own an e24 and I absolutely love it! Yes it may be slow but it’s just in a league of its own. But I wonder how the e30 M3 would compare?
The M6 is detuned for the US market, the M635csi which is the euro version of the M6 had 26 more hp and 8 more torque then the M6
E24 Group A 635csi used the M30 12V engine, not S38 or S88 24V engine.
Does anyone know the song at 3:41?
Have a black 94 lt1 6sp vette myself but really love the styling of the BMW. Also have been smoked on the highway by some 4 door Hyundai lol good video dudes
The trap speed of that Hyundai would indicate it should run a sub 14 second quarter mile
Actually that car could run a low 13 to high 12 in the quarter with that mph.
Motor trend says 13.7
People have hit high 12s / low 13s @ 108ish with the Elantra Ns. Pretty impressive all things considered.
@@apexcobra.official agreed
@@apexcobra.official high 12's is a huge stretch. Maybe 13.5
I think the Viper hood is bigger than the Corvette hood..
Really fun fellas! I’ll subscribe.
One the most loved and beautiful bmw ever made ....anyone over 45 years old lust over these!!!!
Luv that BMW M6. The Vette is in a different league and would be even better with the ZF 6 speed.
The Elantra N is a lot less attractive when you factor in the $10,000 dealer markup.
Okay... so you have one of the the best Hundai dealer packages against an early base C4... Might be more comparable to break out Corvette's better dealer packages like the later base C4, Grand Sport or ZR-1. It would also be interesting to see a track comparison.
Now buy a Used Corvette (C6) or BMW for the price of a new Elantra N and then see the differences or factor the price of the Used C4 or a BMW (335i) and add some upgrades to bring it up to a closer price of a new Elantra N and see who would win.
U guys should do the Nissan 300zx and the late 80s supra turbo vs the corvette
So you were able to fit in the Elantra N seats? Maybe I should give them another chance.
Very clean M6! The question is, does it smell like crayons? (Interior) or is that older 90 to early 2000’s Volkswagen that smell like that?
80s BMWs have a distinct smell
90s BMWs have a distinct smell
2000s BMWs have a distinct smell
I believe the e36 3 series has a distinct smell a bit different from the other 90s 5 and 7/8 series.
Its a nice scent too.
My 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg totally had the crayons smell! Miss that car.
Fun review. I won’t be selling my M635 tho
If I was going to buy a C4 with a manual it would come with the 6 speed. The 6 speed came out on the 1989 Corvette.
the C4 its not 4 sppd manual...... this is Doug & Nash 4+3 transmission, when is in 4 gear you can turn ON or OFF the overdrive, you can switching.
all three are really nice, great video
“I almost had you”, “you almost had your car, it doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning”
Great video 📸
Credit where it's due to the Corvette, the Elantra has the advantage of being boosted at that elevation, so it doesn't suffer as bad in terms of power loss.
