I ended up buying the 5000 a couple of weeks ago from Ken's. Couldn't be happier, with both the machine, and the shop. I live almost 1000 miles away, and it arrived via FedEx in perfect condition. Talking with the staff is great, very responsive to every question (and I had quite a few). The machine is terrific, and quite simple to use, just read the instructions on threading and winding the bobbin. It's a work horse, runs so smoothly, this was a great purchase! My one suggestion with this and any other mechanical with a buttonhole feature: Go over the buttonholes twice, it makes for a much nicer finish.

Ken's Sewing Center introduced me to this machine and got me excited about owning one. Definitely buying HD 5000 from this store.

I have the Myexcel 23x and it seems almost identical to the HD3000. My mum used to make clothes with it for me when i was a baby.. now i am almost 40 and the machine is going strong.

Thanks for this explanation. Doesn't the hd3000 have the foot recommendations/ tensions etc for each stitch listed in the flip-up top with the stitch chart?
Looks like the hd5000 has a little bevel to the throat area for a bit better access.

Which one of these machines will sew belts? What information in a sewing machine manual will tell me the thickest fabric in inches that the machine will sew?

Thanks so much for doing this video! I've been torn between the two models, but the explanation that although they both have 18 sts, the 5000 has the 2 more utility sts, vs. the 3000 decorative got me completely decided on the 5000. (I can live with or without the extra .5mm width:-).)

@@KensSewingCenter do you ship machines out of state, and if so, what is the shipping cost? I'd rather give you the business instead of Amazon:-).

The HD 3000 is shorter than the original 3123 (no longer have) or 3018 ( almost 30 years still going strong). The 5000 is exactly the same as my 5024.

Stick with the hd 1000 with 1 full amp motor.
I have the hd3000 also but it doesn't handle as well as the 1000.

AIUI sometime after 2018 they silently dropped the motor spec (around the same time they switched to led task lighting), so a lot of the earlier claims of handling heavy duty fabrics no longer apply. 😞
