  • Here's an interesting option from Martin's Mexican Road Series. A 000 with Sapele top, back and sides, richlite fingerboard, and Fishman electronics. These are selling for around $760, which I think is a great value. You can't go wrong with a 000 for all-around versatility and comfort. This would make a great gigging option right out of the box.
Recorded with Shure KSM32, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, Logic Pro, no additional processing.

This is a brilliant demo of a marvellous little guitar. This is EXACTLY how the Martin 000-10E sounds when it is not plugged in; a full and warm sound that is surprisingly loud for such a small body. I bought this as my first ever guitar almost one year ago to celebrate my 50th birthday. It cost me one pound Sterling short of £800, which - for a first purchase - was a lot of money for me. It was just slightly over the budget I set myself but Martin has an excellent reputation on build and sound quality and how could I resist a solid wood Martin for under £1000? I am still learning to play (does one ever stop learning?) but every time I pick up this guitar it is an absolute joy! I know these are built in Mexico, not the USA but the buolt quality is great. You won't see any gaps or glue and the satin finish is immaculate. The sound of my Martin has got even better over the year I have had it, as you would expect from a solid wood guitar (or maybe I play it better?) and it sounds great whether you are fingerpicking, flat picking or strumming using a pick , your finger nails or the fleshy parts of your fingers. If you can't afford £800 (which is understandable as it may be at the affordable end for a Martin guitar but it is still a lot of money for most of us) then keep an eye out for a good second hand guitar; I have spotted some lately for around the £600 on Reverb. I can highly recomend this model; for me it was money very well spent as I am looking forward to many more years of playing this beauty!

Ian is one of the few who can create a demo which shows the true sonic potential of an instrument and plays similar patterns on all of them, with just enough variation to keep it interesting, so a good comparison can be made...I plan to send him plenty of coffee money and enough for a meal as well and hope you will consider doing the same to reward and encourage him to keep up the good work he does here.

Great review! You fingerpick the hell out of it most of the time which is what 000 models are meant to be. And to make it even better the strings are no longer the Lifespan 2.0 but D'Addario EJ16.
A sound comparison with Taylor 114 would be nice considering they are in the same price range (at least here).

A remarkable guitar, I have the 000RS1 which is virtually identical. I had no intention of buying this model, but compared to Martin 000 made in the USA I was going to buy, it shone. I had to convince myself it was better, how could it be at that price? but it just is.

2 things this guitar has going for it over the 000-15m is the proper Martin 000 scale length and nut width and of course the price which is a great value for a solid wood guitar. However, I have played them both in stores and tone wise the 15m blows this guitar away. The 000-10e sounds significantly thinner and cheaper. Sapele just doesn't sound as great as Mahogany.
Still a great deal and not surprised it's more popular it's about $600 cheaper, not because it's the better guitar.

But in this smaller 000 size, I’m loving the sapele. Hey Ian, could you live with this for use with a band? Plugged in? I have an M-36 but am not excited about installing a pickup in it. I also like the shorter scale. Was going to wait for a used 000-18 that someone had already done the pickup thing too, but this could grabbed for a fraction. I’m wondering if it would work fine, considering I wouldn’t be going for optimal acoustic tone, just plugging up with a band …
