fun fact: the coyote "scene" was an accident, they were filming around LA and it just happened and Mann kept it in the movie cause it really fit with the feel of the movie.
Michael Mann and Tom Cruise were both very interested in Tom playing Vincent, but the studio was unconvinced (no pun intended). They thought that Tom was "too recognizable" to play a hitman that was described in the script as "someone people wouldn't notice." So, Mann dressed up Tom as a UPS deliveryman, had him make deliveries to businesses all day and followed him around with a hidden camera, to show that people wouldn't recognize him. No one noticed Tom. He even had lunch in a cafe and had a conversation with another man for 30 minutes without being recognized. They showed the tape to the studio execs, and they agreed to let Tom play Vincent.
Tom Cruise trained for weeks to perfect that Mozambique drill in the alley. He felt that as trained as Vincent was supposed to be, it had to look perfect and it did. Very good gun handle.
I watched that that as well, I can’t remember if it was part of the video or a documentary. All I remember is how I kept rewinding the video to see how he did it. Very impressive.
Tom Cruise should play villains more often, he definitely nailed it in this, especially with the white hair

The closest he's gotten to villainous roles was in Tropic Thunder and MAYBE Magnolia (but that's more of a redemptive arc than anything).
He is a real life villain. This is the closest to real he's ever been. Literal slave owner.

Fun fact: the beginning of collateral at the airport is the same where the movie heat ends, and the train station that ends collateral is the same that begins with heat.

Vincent missed in the subway because he's so disciplined and programmed, he executed his standard "Mozambique"/failure to stop drill (two in the chest, one in the head) and all three shots caught the metal door. You can see the indentation left by the shots.
This movie is incredible. The true heart and climax of the film is the last argument in the taxi and Max deciding to truly take control of his life.
This film, Tropic Thunder, and Interview with the Vampire are all definitive evidence that Tom Cruise plays a fantastic villain. He should do it more often. He’s sort of the villain in The Color of Money also.
You could probably attribute that to his hyper charisma and slick surface level charm that seems to mask more chilling depths.

Hopefully someone mentioned this in the comments section but here's an amazing fact about the end and how Vincent died... It was BECAUSE he was a TRAINED killer that he died. Throughout the whole movie he was telling Max to be unpredictable and roll with the punches, E-ching, etc. If you look at the shootout scene Vincent lost because his bullets (double tap to the chest and one in the head) HIT THE METAL DOORS while Max shot wildly and unpredictably. That's an awesome touch. You can see the Vincent's bullet holes in the doorway

As always, Michael Mann succeeds in making the City itself one of the major supporting characters.
I think Cruise's first out and out villain role was Lestat in Interview With the Vampire, but his role in Magnolia is very close to being an antagonist. This is Cruise's third bad guy role I think.
He was amazing as Lestat even Anne Rice the author of the book doubted him but thought he was great in the role.
Vincent didnt hit his shots cause he aimed for chest double tap, like he always does. Look at the bullet holes. Max hit his shots cause he shot chaotically. Its a metaphor, this movie is full of em.
This is Tom Cruise’s best performance. Truly played against type and should have been up for an Academy Award. Such an amazing film overall too. Cool to see you guys watch this film, take care!

When I first saw this film, I was actually a taxi driver - 16 years total. Foxx's portrayal of a cabbie is spot on and impressed me quite a bit. Always wondered what prep he did for the role. Several actors drove cab before their acting break like Danny Glover, Jimmy Smits, & Leonard Nimoy - maybe Jaime too?
JMHO .... Cruise is always better when he's playing off other A-list folk. Check him out in The Firm, Legend, Valkyrie, Color of Money, or The Last Samurai.

Love this movie. Saw it in the theater when I was in high school. Was cool to see Tom Cruise play this part. Would like to see him play a villain again. That alleyway shooting never gets old. According the pros, he did it perfectly.
Big shout out to the sound editing of this movie. It is so visceral because it is edited to be so real. The subtle echoes when surrounded by concrete up to the full volume reports of the .45 usp when he murders the thieves. It draws you in and makes you feel like you are there. The hollywood supressor is the only downside
Yeah, I never understood why Michael Mann decided to use the ridiculous sound that you always hear from Hollywood cans. He's usually trying to be as realistic as possible. Still, great movie.
@jeffgray7922 my guess is he doesn't really understand supressors same as most non shooters. You hear 22lr with subsonic and you think no noise. In reality it would have been about 100db to 110db so the same as a hand drill to a chainsaw
Brilliant from Michael Mann. The themes of destiny, chance and unwavering commitment to the cause feature prominently in his work and here they intertwine and permeate the entire movie. Especially chance. From Max and Vincent's first meeting at the airport(Vincent initially walks by Max's cab as Max is distracted)to their last on the train(random shooting defeating professional shooting), chance plays a vital role throughout the whole film. And Cruise is great here as a sociopathic nihilistic hitman. Should play bad guys more often Just superb stuff all round.

When Vincent was her building it wasn't a miss chance to kill. The security in that building was the highest of all his targets. He was casing the place out in case he had to kill her there. She was last on the list. Guy falling from the window was chance.
One of my favorite Cruise movies. I wish he played more bad guys like this, he does it so well.
The reason why Vincent didn't hit Max was because he was using his chest/head shot routine and the door was blocking his chest and head while Max was just spraying

I guess it’s all subjective, but this is Tom Cruise’s best performance, imo. So I agree with the husband that he completely immersed himself in the role and it never feels like Cruise playing a bad guy. Cruise WAS Vincent in this film.

Born on the Fourth of July truly shows the acting talent of Tom Cruise.
I have a spinal cord injury and I only know what it is to be paralyzed but his portrayal of Ron Kovic shows what it’s like to be paralyzed-everything from the pressure ulcers to the little sideways looks from people in public. I highly recommend Born on the Fourth of July
Detective Fanning is definitely dead. Vincent performed his signature Mozambique drill on him. Two in the chest and one in the head though we only see Vincent shooting the head shot. We don't see the impact. The drill is what caused Vincent's downfall on the train. His shots went into the train door because because he was reflex shooting at Max. Max was shooting wildly and hit Vincent by pure luck.
Vincent missed because he instinctively went for centre mass on his shots, he hit the middle of the door between them while Max firing aimlessly shot around and through the windows.
Michael Mann is a master filmmaker, and one you should look into the work of way more.
The Insider (2000) and Thief (1981) are my favorite films of his, for sure.

And he nailed it. Scary, scary, psychopathic part. I was so happy to see him in this role. And that stumble through the window did not look like a stunt to me - i loved that they kept that in. A film full of firsts. I think this is my favorite TC movie. This and BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.

This was a very fun one to see in theaters, the gunshots especially are just way up in the sound mix and you could feel them in your chest. For another Michael Mann classic, I would recommend checking out Thief sometime, it was his first feature length film and it's got all of his trademark visual flair right out the gate. Plus a great soundtrack courtesy of Tangerine Dream
Tangerine Dream are phenomenal
Mann directed "Manhunter" back in the 80's, which is based on Thomas Harris's novel "Red Dragon", where Hannibal Lecter was introduced. It's fantastic and this one reminds me of that one.
These two actually watched that feature several months back.
I've always felt this movie doesn't get enough attention. One of my favorites for moods.
The answer to the jazz question didn't matter, Vincent was just giving him a sense of hope that there was a way out so that the kill was easier. Does the same thing to Max by suggesting he will survive the night, so that Max doesn't resist him.
It was Vincent's own fault for been a perfectionist that got himself killed at the end.
The 2 bullets to the chest and 1 to the head is called the "mozambique drill" its to make sure 100% the target is dead.
The final shoot out in the train you see vicent shooting the same technique but the bullets don't go through the metal train door. You clearly see this in a split second. But max just shot randomly and was lucky to land the shots on vicent.
Not sure if mentioned, Vincent shots were straight and true in the end but when you see Max’s point of view all three shots are in the door, whereas Max shot thru the window
Actually it goes deeper than that. Vincent shots are in the door because he shot like he trained; mozambique style; 2 to the chest and one to the head. His training kicked in but because of the door the shots couldnt get through.

@@jonathanmccullouch3243 Yeah I know, but this little gem was actually mentioned by the director in some interview. They purposefully placed the bullet impacts on the door in a way that it shows that he always automatically shoots this way.

I'd say Tom Cruise is probably the best actor of our generation. There's nothing this bloke can't do.
I have two early Michael Mann movies that you have to put on your must-watch list. THIEF from 1981, and The KEEP from 1983. Both are great on their own and have great music, plus they also have a grade actor in them to boot.
Jason Stratham cameo at the air port while credited as "man in airport" in the credits was his character Frank Martin in the Transporter movies.
This was comfirmed by both Michael Mann and the director of the 2nd Transporter movie

Jamie Foxx really impressed me. (Mellverse just watched Horrible Bosses a few weeks ago and I forgot how funny he was in that. Both of those movies are hilarious if you haven't seen them yet.) It keeps surprising me how good comedians can be at drama. He was so nasty in Baby Driver.
Tom Cruise should definitely do more villain roles.

I say this all the time. I would have loved to see more Tom cruise play the villain in more movies. He got that right edge and intensity. Great performance here!
My mom's the exact same way. She never ever wants anyone to buy her flowers. For any person you care about find out what they like and do that for them. Be creative and thoughtful, it's not always perfect but it's very generous to care for others.
While his movies are more dependable for their action these days it's unfortunate Thomas Cruise Mapother IV doesn't challenge himself as far as roles he's willing to play. His focus is all on the experience for the audience so it's hard to fault him for that. He's probably the last true star and he's passionate about bringing something that audiences can't get anywhere but the movies. I'd argue the last time he tried something different was over a decade ago in 'Rock Of Ages'. 'Collateral' was a real high point in that era of Cruise along with 'Magnolia. 'Collateral' was the last movie before the couch incident. Not sure how things would have progressed had that not happened. 'Tropic Thunder' was a bit of image rehabilitation but after couch-gate I read that he made a decision to make his work the focal point which is why he pretty much sticks to talking movies and his love of them these days. I do wonder if anything would have changed had the Oprah thing not happened. Supposedly Steven Spielberg refused to work with him after that and a lot of people wrote him off completely but now he and Chris McQuarrie are almost inseparable. I find it all fascinating. Clearly.

Michael Bay actually played a thug on an episode of "Miami Vice" before getting into the director's chair.
I saw this in theaters. It was much better on the big screen.

When you said this might be Tom's best performance I instantly thought of Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia. This is good but I think Collateral is more of an Eyes Wide Shut sort of performance where the movie over all is the masterpiece and not just him specifically.
It's definitely long and it's definitely polarizing but I would love to see y'all watch Magnolia, even if just to see Tom Cruise in another one of the most pivotal and impressive roles in his career. Not necessarily a bad guy in it but definitely not a good one, lol. Tons of great performances in it, but Tom's range really shines in such a gut-wrenchingly bleak comedy.
Miami Vice is pretty great as a double feature with this movie, it's even more distilled Mann-ish style than Collateral. I think Thief may be my favorite of what I've seen.
I actually love Michael Mann's Miami Vice. It's an amazing film on so many levels...
Vincent is not a villain. He's honest and hardworking, he's polite and respectful, he's dependable and he has a great work ethic. He doesn't cheat, lie or steal. He's doing a job. And he's probably the best friend or at least the closest thing to a friend that Max ever had. I especially liked the scene where Vincent sticks up for max and defended him from his hack boss/fleet manager.

What’s interesting in hindsight about this movie is that both the main actors dated Katie Holmes.
You don't get it, it's deeper than that...see once Max pretended to be Vincent, he liked how it felt so he had to become him, had to kill him and search Vincent's life to find a high school sweetheart, Katie Holmes, when Annie moved away cuz of the PTSD stress, Max tracked Katie down and courted her

The policeman played by Mark Ruffalo was shot dead for sure - you can hear three shots, two in the torso and then one more in the head.
1:34 Somebody clearly haven't seen Interview with the Vampire for which to this day I believe he should gotten an Oscar Nomination! Cruize was exceptional in that film!
Another Tom cruise villain role, interview with a vampire as Lastat. Best performance (IMO) is in Born on the route of July.

I dunno if it's been mentioned but there's irony in the story Vincent tells about the guy dying on the subway and no one realizing he was dead and then ends up being the dead body on the train.
According to Legend: Though credited as Airport Man, Jason Statham's cameo was rumored to be Frank Martin of Transporter fame.
I wonder if Vincent knew John Wick. Would be interesting if there's a crossover of having Vincent cooperate with John.
Man it’s been forever since I’ve seen y’all react. But this is one of my all time favorites. Excited.
For all the criticism that Vincent gives Max for not being spontaneous, it's what saves Max in the end while being a creature of habit got Vicent killed. Max was finally spontaneous and just fired blindly and got a lucky hit, Vincent did what he always did-- two to the chest and one to the head. Look at the middle of the doors between the train cars there are two holes chest-high and one at head height, by movie rules bullets that hit metal are stopped (even the relatively thin metal of a door like that).
The women Jaime foxx's character saved at end is a witness and Jamie foxx's character for her case
Most people often miss his 1st piece of work ..."Thief" '81 🌟James Caan. To date one of my silent favorites. The one that got me hook'd on Mann.

@6:23 I know its a movie but in movie reality would he be kicking himself that he didn't just ignore vincent and let him go to another cab or be glad he did because he saved annie (a illogical but potential thing). And now has a really great story to tell.
Love this movie. Michael Mann is the man. Love his work since Miami Vice the series. Best Mann movie is in my opinion Heat followed by Manhunter and The Last of the Mohicans.

Best Tom Cruise performance is easily his role in Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia. Maybe you guys should check that one out.
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie
Tom Cruise plays another villan in "interview with the vampire". In this one his white hair gives him a different look, but he stills is bad playing the hitman, i mean with the first target he makes a lot of mess, if he was a good hitman the cab didnt note this. And in the end the hitman dies in a shooting against the cab
I read the script for part two where Max assumes Vincent's identity.

Jamie Foxx was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this performance and Best Actor for Ray in the same year. He won for Ray but did not win for this.

Actually there was 1 witness left to clear Max and that was the last hit The Female Prosecutor Lawyer and what ever a State Prosecutor tells Law Enforcement and the court is taken as 100% facts...but when it comes to Defense Lawyers they can talk all they want their words/statements are taken with a grain of salt.
