Highly underrated movie and personally i think Cruise nailed playing Vincent.
So agree 💯 Cruise should play more villains.
Michael Mann got Tom to work as a fed ex delivery driver to see how little people pay attention.,also props to mark ruffalo for a great supporting role.
Absolutely brilliant film. I always go back to it every year or so. Cruise and Foxx are obviously superb. I love scene with the Coyote slinking across the street/Vincent looking on with Audioslave's Shadows on the Sun kicking in. The quintessential Micheal Mann experience... What a movie. Speedy recovery Jamie Foxx!!
Mann uses a remix of Joy Division song in Heat to remarkable effect as well.
The coyote was pure serendipity, it crossed the street while they were filming in the wee hours.
@@reservoirdude92 Moby! Moby was a MASSIVE J.D. fan and Mann used his covers. Incidently have you seen 'LA Takedown' - Mann's first version of Heat.?
Tom Cruise is a damn good villain! I wish he’d do it more. Lestat & Vincent are my favorite characters of his!!! Loved Jason Statham’s appearance as Frank Smith, the Transporter was EPIC too 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Michael Mann is an absolute Legend who doesn't get nearly enough praise nor attention. Feels more like a Filmmaker's Filmmaker than a household name. Should be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of James Cameron. One of the greats!💖
Couldn't have said it better myself
This is a movie that doesnt get talked about but is really good and shows that Cruise really can act (it also shows Foxx can act in a role that isn't bigger than life).
For all his personal issues, I don’t think anyone could ever accuse Tom Cruise of giving a half-assed performance. Even in his movies that didn’t work so well, he is committed.
no one does gunshots like Michael Mann.. THE BEST
Indeed, that powerful sound 🥶
Those are just realistic gunshots. More films should do it.
@@jakester455 heat has the best
According to Legend, though Jason Statham's character was said to be credited as Airport Man, his character has later been rumored to be Frank Martin of Transporter fame.
The killing of Ruffalo's character always hits you hard cause it seriously comes out of nowhere
Until today, I never realized Felix was played by Javier Bardem, and I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it over 15 years ago. No idea how you instantly recognized him, but well done!
This was such a unnoticed movie at the time. There were some other good movies at the time and this flew under most people's radar. It's shame because the movie is amazing.
Looking forward to this. Yes my man, that was a coyote, and a coyote doesn't care about any life beyond its own - just like Vincent.
One of my favorite movies! Both Tom and Jamie are amazing in this!
Jamie Foxx is also in Michael Mann's next film, Miami Vice. It, too, is underrated. It's not like the TV show from the 80s. It's dark, and serious, and IMO has a great plot. Definitely worth checking out if you like this and Heat.
Before this he was also in Ali
Love this movie. Tom Cruise is great as a bad guy. Wish he did more bad guys. I love the way Mann makes the city another character and that sort of feeling you get if you spend time at night driving to the streets of LA, or probably any other big city like that.
Scorsese does the same about NYC:)
I think the closest he gets to a villain is edge of tomorrow when he tries to blackmail himself out of military service
A nice detail that I didn't notice the first time I watched is that in the final shootout b/w Vincent and Max is you can see 2 impacts on the subway door about chest level and 1 at head level. So for all his talk about adapting and changing, Vincent gets undone by his strict reliance on shooting the way he was trained and Max succeeds by adapting to the situation, changing positions as the lights go out.
Man this is my second favorite Tom Cruise movie of all time, wish he would play more roles like this.
So many different aspects to unpack in this movie and I think that Caped Informer did this very very well. One aspect that may have been missed was the ending shootout between Max and Vincent, where Vincent's training actually hurts him, as he shoots the metal part of the subway door with his precise shooting, whereas Max just closes his eyes and shoots wildly, shooting glass and therefore getting bullets through to where they can mortally wound Vincent. Just thought that that was a very very interesting piece of irony there and extremely well written, where in no other scenario would Max be successful in a gunfight with a trained killer such as Vincent.
The coyote makes it top tier for me.
The random predator cruising, no pun intended, the streets of L.A.
Gotta love Tom Cruise as an antagonist; he doesn’t play that role often.
If you decide to watch Miami Vice (2006) either personally or for a reaction, I recommend the theatrical cut as opposed to the Director's Cut that seems to be the most readily available. It's one of the very few examples where I think the theatrical version was slightly better than an available Director's Cut.
Wish Tom did more bad guys, he does them well. When he tripped on the chair towards the end, it was an accident but they kept it in. The 2 shots to the chest and one to the head is something typically done by a professional. Someone who knows firearms, is precise at shooting and is calm in whatever the situation it may be. That's why the coroner recognized it when he saw it in the lawyer and the thugs that Tom had shot when they stole his case. The professionalism of sticking to his status quo with shooting did him in at the end. His three shots hit the metal of the door, unlike inexperience Max who shot blindly and scored a hit when he fired through the glass on the door.
Is it just me, or has no one noticed the awesome choice of music throughout this movie. It's very cool and creates the perfect mood.
Spot on
A bit of trivia for you. I believe that this was the first film completely filmed in digital. That’s just normal now. But that was a rising at the time. The 1995 movie Heat was partially filmed in digital. Michael Mann was ahead of his time. He shot the night season digital so that they would be clearer and more defined. At the time, digital had already surpassed film in regards to night scenes. Better light capture in dark scenes I believe. That’s why he chose to use digital for the night scenes and heat. That’s why it has that very defined cinematic look to it.
Michael Mann always makes the city a character in his movies. One of his films is Thief, great slow burn that really captures the essence of Chicago. Miami Vice, another great one. Great reaction and breakdown, thank you.
And TC in "Born on the Fourth of July" will show his remarkable range playing a real Viet Name war vet and his politicization to oppose the war.
I remember a story in a bio on Oliver Stone that, while they were shooting in Dallas (the Long Island scenes and a few other scenes were all shot in Dallas, part of Stone’s long term plan to get in good with city officials so he could get permission to film JFK), that Cruise made a deal with the then-owner of the Cowboys to rent the stadium for a few nights and let the cast and crew play football. Said it helped lighten the mood shooting such heavy material.
Michael Mann always has the best music in his films.
Awesome! I've loved this since I first saw it in theaters. This and The Insider are Mann's best films.
Of all the scary movies I've watched, Vincent is one of the most terrifying villians out there.
For a Tom Cruise movie where he’s not being TC, I recommend Born on the Fourth of July.
Absolutely. His best movie.
Some of my favorite performances from both those guys.
Vincent gonna be riding that train for a while
Michael Mann also did a TV Series called Crime Story (1986), that ran alongside Miami Vice for a while. It's about the rise of organized crime in Chicago. Ray Luca, who is a combination of the characters that Joe Pesci plays in Goodfellas and Casino, and an organized crime squad like in Heat, chasing the bad guys. There are so many comparisons to real organized crime figures. At least one scene was used from Crime Story in the movie Heat. They're not the same but they're not that different being done by Michael Mann. Ted Levine from Silence of the lambs when he was younger. \m/
What I love most about Michael Mann movies- the gunshot sounds. They are load and feels like you are there.
Fantastic movie!! Cruise trained with the IDPA to make sure his draw, clear and fire movements were legit! :)
All the gun scenes were filmed against a green screen with luve ammo, and the real audio :)
I love Cruise's style in this 😎
The soundtrack us fantastic as well! Audioslave FTFW!😎
#RiPChrisCornell 💔😭😭
HEAT starts on a train and ends at an airport. Collateral starts at an airport and ends on a train 😁
Also the Statham cameo is supposed to be his character from The Transporter ;)
You should get the BLU-Ray and watch behind the scenes footage: it's gives a LOT of background on Vincent's character.
This was a great film . And this type of genre , in the hands of director Michael Mann , is why it worked . Tom Cruise is very good at portraying someone who is very good at something . Jamie Fox's portrayal of the cab driver , someone who is a good and descent man , and good at what he does , was outstanding . And after we the audience find out that Max's fare is a hit man , we have to know that Max is going to die , because that guy , Vincent , is like a guided missile . And even though the killer is charming and seems genuinely warm toward Max , you know in the back of your mind throughout the film that ultimately this guy will murder Max .
Dang i loved this movie. Never realized that was Jason Statham in the beginning
9:40 Vincent wasn’t sticking up for Max to be nice. He was planning to kill Max later and pin the murders on him. He wanted the dispatcher to have a story that Max had seemed angry and unhinged, which would have helped support the narrative that Max had been the killer.
I’m sure others have mentioned it, but you’d probably also like Michael Mann’s “Thief.” It’s up there with “Heat” as far as one of the all-time great crime movies.
It's actually like ''movie fake grey hair color'', like you see in all those old movies, it's not his real hair color, because he's of course a hitman....
By the way, Collateral was diected by Michael Mann, an absolute Brilliant action director… he and Tony Scott ( no longer living) are my favorite smart action directors add Anthony Fuqua to that group
I've loved this movie since it came out. Utterly fantastic.
The fact that the woman saying she was wrong was Jada Pinkett confirms that it is only a movie.
You are right about Michael Mann and crime movies - he really knows how to pull them off.
Two of my faves are THIEF w/ James Caan (pre Miami Vice) & MANHUNTER (86) - the first iteration of Red Dragon.
Huh, really dug your compare/contrast with training day. Never thought of that. Very insiteful. Great reaction
If you like a crime thriller you should check this one out.
True Romance is a 1993 American romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino. It features an ensemble cast led by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, with Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Walken in supporting roles.
Great choice Caped! This film is awesome! I even have it on DVD. I got it from ... Blockbusters😄 Very good cast. Great review. Ty!
Great movie !!!
The Maldives Islands, btw, is a surfing destination. Great waves.
Another great reaction, sir.
For more Micheal Mann: Thief, Miami Vice and Manhunter.
And since you like Heat, maybe you should read Heat 2. The book is both a prequel and a sequel to the movie Heat. Written by Micheal Mann and Meg Gardiner.
He's batshit crazy in real life but on screen he's the Cruise missile
Oh the Training Day comparison. Nice. Never thought of that.
Tom Cruise is also a top notch villain in Neil Jordan's excellent.. Interview with a Vampire.
I heard a theory that Jada wasn't a coincidence. Some how he had some prep work for that building knowing his last kill would be there even if he didn't specifically know who.
In case no one mentioned it...Michael Mann has said that Jason Statham was implied to be his 'Transporter' character in this
Amazing movie and amazing reaction as always @CapedInformer
For my money, best role Cruise has played.
3:01 Moments like this are why I'm subbed.
Brilliant film. Note how Vincent chastises Max for being such a creature of habit and never doing anything spontaneous. Meanwhile, Vincent is a creature of habit himself, the cops even talk about the other cab driver who went on a rampage but a detective always thought there was another person. VIncect used the same tactics and it gets him killed. Look at the door between the train cars, there are two bullet holes where Max's chest should be and one at head level. Vincent took the same shot he does throughout the film, what shooters call the Mozambique drill, two to the body and one to the head. the shoot hit the door and not Max. Meanwhile, Max does something spontaneous for the first time in his life and shoots randomly through the door, and a lucky shot hits Vincent.
I've seen this movie a few times but I didn't catch until now how at the beginning Vincent tells the story of the guy who died on the subway and wasn't discovered for 6 days and Vincent ends up becoming the dead guy on the subway.
Miami Vice, seriously underrated. Check it out.
Such an underrated movie. Awesome.
Cruise plays an awesome bad guy. I wish he had done it some more throughout his career.
You gotta watch Thief! Maybe his best film
3:05 :D Yep, it is a fantasy movie all right ;)
Spanish Key is the Miles Davis song in this movie. Every time I hear it I think of this film.
Masterpiece of a film
Whatever I think of Tom Cruise, I have to say fantastic movies
Really good movie. Love your reaction
Jamie Foxx had this and Ray in the same year, absolutely killed it
Love this movie!
This movie is a masterpiece.
Loooove this movie
🍺Great react sir.. I will recommend for future crime thrillers "the Negotiator"-1998 & "Enemy of the State"-1998
If you like crime thrillers and Micheal Mann then you should check out Thief 1981. It’s Micheal Mans first movie but easily one of his best, James Cann is great in it too.
Great choice. Tom cruise is a beast when hes playing a bad guy.
Little does cabby know the best thing to ever happen to him would be to not get her number...
Great movie
Don't bring your woman to the movie set around Jamie Fox, Tom Cruise learned the hard way (Katie Holmes)
"A woman admitting that she was wrong. This has to be a movie." LMFAO. That's how we know you've dated at least one woman in your life.
if you loved this one you would love the movie " The Watcher" with Keanu Reeves. You would see a very similar to this movie
Yo homie! That my briefcase?
Classic!!
Best Mark Ruffalo role
Now that you’ve seen collateral. I got a question for you. Heat versus collateral? Which do you think is better? I always thought he was superior. But I’m not so sure anymore.
When this came out this was the time when Tom Cruise and John Travolta always played good guys and at the same time they played bad guys and blew everyone away at being awesome bad guys. Peace
Which movie did John Travolta play a bad guy in at the the same time as Collateral?
@@cavaughngrace1488 Broken Arrow. In fact it's on CZcams right now.
Did you ever hear of the movie "Lucky Number Slevin"? I'd love to see you watch it. It is a movie wich i did not recognize when it came out many many years ago. i found it by accident when video stores still was a thing, i saw the cover with Bruece Willis, Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley on it and i was surprised i never heard of it. it is a crime/Gangster movie as well mixed with some nice comedy, especially in the dialogues. Gives me a little bit of Pulp Fiction Vibes sometimes, but more lighthearted. Worth a watch.
Cruise has got to play more villains!
Tropic Thunder.
You should review “Domino” by Tony Scott. The cinematography is awesome and a great film.
Have you reacted to The Departed yet?
Yo homie you got my briefcase
He is a fair hitman. #1 rule is never leave witnesses
❤
Why is this review only available on certain formats but not on others?
Tom Cruise is a can't miss actor
Jada „definition of ´Toxicˋ „ Pinkletsuhaveapiece last real Role afaik, hope it stays that way
I don’t understand the concept of actors being “under utilized.” The screenplay is the screenplay. The actors who audition know the parts they’re reading for and agree to do them. I like seeing famous performers nailing smaller roles and servicing the overall story.
Peak TC
Tom Cruise is an actor… he is a good actor
Cruise is a god
