This is what the 80s were all about. Mowing down waves of nameless bad guys, cheesy one-liners, and a wicked steel drum soundtrack. Love it.
James Horners steel drum accompaniment for the film must be the most idiosyncratic score for an action film yet.
It works all the same, but it’s so unusual, even in a period of time when the parameters of the action genre were still being established.
Also, if you listen closely it’s clear that Horner was largely rehashing parts of his score from 48 HRS (1982). The only difference is that the steel drums in Commando are more strident and repetitious, but that’s part of the charm. At least it succeeds in its task, which is to evoke tension in the audience.
Anyone complaining about 80's movies' violence can shut the hell up and remember what modern movies are like, eg. Logan and countless others with not only senseless violence but there isn't even any fun in the movie, just darkness and sickening levels of negativity and hopelessness. The hero also isn't really any individual, it's always some covert government/similar organisation...
@@stoogefest16CRINGE
@@GeorgeTropicanago to bed kiddo
Can you just imagine all the guys sitting around in the Border rooms thinking about what this movie needs for music and then one guy piped up and says oh, you know what this needs a lot of STEEL DRUMS 😂
Edit and you also knowing that board meeting they had a 5lb bag of cocaine on the table LOL
"Freddie Mercury" is Vernon Wells who played Wez in The Road Warrior, the main mohawk-sporting antagonist. He played that character so well.
He also plays the same character in Weird Science....
I just watched him in Innerspace, as well.
If you play back the beginning scene when Bennet gets on the boat, the boat man says "Hey Wez"
I guess it's so quick no one noticed to do a retake. No BS
He also played the main villain in Power Rangers Time Force called Ransik.
Commando's always a favorite because there's almost a purity to it. It's just straight down the line, no frills, almost condensing the essence of 80s action into 90 minutes.
Right. It’s an almost perfect archetype of the genre.
@@stoogefest16 It's literally the most 80's action film ever.
WRONG!
@@LeMaqnifiquefury road was sorely lacking in Arnold charm though unfortunately
The " I eat Green Berets for breakfast," line was a dig at Sylvester Stallone, as Rambo was a green beret.
Rae Dawn Chong really makes this film, she's actually a good actress and has excellent comedy timing.
And refreshingly she's a capable sidekick who helps the hero, but isn't a boss girl or love interest.
@@doughbafettYes I agree
You can tell with a lesser actress her character could have been super annoying, but Rae really does an awesome job right from the start
@@doughbafett They did want to shoehorn in a romantic angle between them, but none of the scenes they shot passed muster, so they dispensed with that subplot altogether and kept their association platonic.
Arnold is clearly in love with himself the entire film and he didn't want to share with Rae Dawn Chong.
This isn't an 80's action movie. This is THE 80's action movie.
High five!
Movie mistake,Arnold opening that door on the landing gear, that plane would,be never took off.
Absolutely 💯 💯
There's way better 80's action movies than this piece of garbage movie.
@@_MjG_ such as?
The actor who plays Bennett in this movie also played Wez, one of the biker gang members, in Road Warrior, and Bill Duke (Cooke) played Mac in The Predator.
And Sully is Charlie in John Wick, the dinner reservation guy.
He also the main villain in *Power Rangers: Time Force*
Ransik.
For David Kelly I would have gone with The Warriors or The Crow but I guess John Wick is more recent. lol
Or Twin Peaks.
He does look like a buff Freddy Mercury tho
I watched this as a kid in 1987 and was certain that I would be carrying trees around and having to go to battle with entire armies when I grew up.
Chuck Norris did a famous M-60 scene in "Missing in Action" (1984).
This movie is the one that really initiated the 80s macho macheezmo one liner action movies. It is so stupid, silly yet very entertaining.
I think what started the action one liners was the Dirty Harry movies.
@@Jar0fMay0 no, thr 80s one liners are silly and stupid. Dirty Harry was respectable and stern one liners. This was the celebration to kill bad man
It was also indirectly responsible for the rise of Bruce Willis.
Even though Dirty Harry had awesome respectable one liners, I’ll always say that Sean Connery with his James Bond interpretation is the king of one liners, and that’s when I noticed when it started.
Then again we also had dudes like James Cagney, Humfrey Bogart and Clark Gable doing one liners in their movies too back in the day, but the 80’s movies is where it did start to get ridiculously overdone, but I personally still loved it with a passion lol 😆.
@@LoneWolf_Cub_Ogami_Itto how pathetic can you get 🙄
commando might not be the best arnold movie, but it's definitely the most arnold movie.
People forget about Raw Deal and Red Heat. Both movies underperformed, but also we’re underrated action movies.
It's definitely top 3 for me. I saw this when I was 12 and I was so amazed by it....just blew my mind how fun of a movie this was. I'm 46 now and everytime I rewatch it, I still feel the same. It's non-stop pure ridiculous adrenaline and I'm here for every minute of it! 🤩
That Arnie impression was not the worst I've heard 😂 More please 👍👍
Its damn good actually lol
Meet your new mommy! Lol
Mr Kaiju Cowboy Movies has an awesome Arnold impression. And the puns from his wife had me in stitches. The banter between the two makes this channel one of the most fun to watch. My lady don't really watch that many movies with me.
Yeah for real, that was impressive!
It’s absolutely fun to imitate Arnie
The other "knife" that he used was a ballistic knife. Basically fires from strong spring or gas. Very popular back in the day, nowadays I think you need a special license for it. I'm always amazed at all the crazy stuff available back then.
I watched this movie way too many times as a kid. I'd say it's the most pure action movie, just enough plot to string together a bunch of badass action scenes.
Same here. This and Predator was my favorite action movie to watch growing up.
When I was younger my dad would take a trip to Germany every year around the same date for his grandmother's birthday. Oddly enough every year at that same time when my dad went to Germany either Predator would come on. Sometimes Commando or The Running Man would air too around that time.
People make fun of these movies all the time but... It's entertaining and memorable. Modern movies in general are not fun and colorful enough.
@ryanjacobson2508 idk who's making fun of these movies. No friends of mine. Maybe having a laugh at one liners, but it's hard to make fun of something that doesn't take itself that seriously.
I can't think of many current movies people will be watching decades from now.
@@JoeXTheXJuggalo1 All super solid picks from that golden Arnold era.
@@ryanjacobson2508 must be the youths that are making fun of it. Yeah I know when I grew up into a adult I do see some of the odd over the top and some corniness of some of those old action movies but I don't make fun of it.
Like I said it's probably the youths that don't know what real movies are. They just know over the top CGI computer crap special effects in movies and thinks everything below that is trash. It's like I had a cousin who got a HD plasmas flat screen TV when they was new. When he saw a movie on a old box tv he was complaining how "poor" the quality of the images was. I'm just sitting thinking to myself "I don't see the difference besides a price between the TVs". I still have a old box tv from the 90s and it still runs like a champ. Those new fancy flat screen tvs need to be replaced every few years because they keep breaking. First time I bought a flat screen tv I went name brand. Within a couple 2-3 years it already was screwing up.
The Mrs. was completely mesmerized by Bennett!
RIP, James Horner, for composing one of the most badass soundtracks in movie history.
steel drums FTW!
Same soundtrack from Walter Hills' movie 48Hrs?
@simongeoghegan9842 yep and he also did COD Modern Warfare 2.
He plagiarized other people's music like crazy
@@KHAOE1James Horner wasn't making music for any Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack was done by Hans Zimmer (Main Theme) and Lorne Balfe (rest score)
I love that you finished that commando joke but called him an idiot!
I only finished it because I knew that’s what he was going to say.
Fun fact. Die Hard was originally supposed to be Commando 2, then evolved into what it became.
Rae Dawn Chong holding the M202 backwards when she fires it the first time, is probably the most relatable thing for most people. Especially since her whole "training" was reading the instructions sticker....
Reminds me of Judge Reinhold in Beverly Hills Cop 2
Or Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
There the sticker must have fallen off, but luckily there was a kid having seen this one before …
7:42 "Gotta love a Chevy. Durable." That seems like such a wonderfully Montana thing to say.
This movie was my first introduction to Arnold, as a kid back in the late 80s. We never knew his real name back then, so we always referred to him as "Commando" whenever we saw him in other movies 😅😅😅
The Arnold gearing up scene at about 26:10 is enough to make grown men and women swoon.
Arnold says "I'll be back", or some variation, in most of his movies he was in after "The Terminator".
Mr. Movies does a great Ahhhnold impression 😂
Saw it at the theater in 1985. That was a great summer for movies!
Actually, “Commando” opened in the fall on October 4th, 1985. 😊
I actually haven't watched this movie in decades so this JUST hit me. When Arnold says "WRONG!" and sghoots the guy right after, he does the exact same thing in Terminator when he starts loading the shotgun. The shop keeper says "You can;t load those in here!" then the T-800 says "Wrong" and kills him.
He also reuses the same line "Fuck you, asshole" from the insults menu of Terminator and, of course, his signature one "I'll be back".
@@Cau_No Yeah I caught the "I'll be back one," but I missed the other "Fuck you asshole.". Still, it was first set of movies and his accent was much heavier, as well. LoL
Arnold had to tell the director he can't actually carry the log, he only looks like he can
Can't wait to see if they spot the Porsche whoopsie. Probably the greatest goof up in cinema history.
You mean the magical self repairing Porsche
@@comment22889 Aye lol.
The “meet your new mommy” comment made me spit out my coffee!!!!! 😂
I was wondering if there would be a "going commando" joke and of course in the first 15 seconds you let me know I was in for a treat 😂😂😂
4:12 This deserved a bigger laugh.
10/10 for the recognition. 10/10 for the reference. 10/10 for crafting the joke as an Arnie one-liner.
Thank you so much!! The Mr didn’t get the reference and so my joke really fell flat but I appreciate that at least one person caught it! Thank you
The Arnold imitations are hilarious 😂
My favorite line: “Remember, Sully, when I said I’d kill you last? I lied!”
Best line in the movie
The dude Arnold lied about killing last and dropped him off the Cliff, he’s the bad guy in THE CROW. FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP!😅
"The Warriors" and "Dreamscape"
He was kinda typecast as the weaselly sort of psycho guy.
@@richardrobbins387 this is true haha
Wow. Mr Movies does one of the best Arnie impressions I’ve seen.
Surprisingly Arnold!!
This is one of my favorite Arnold movies. A lot of great one liners
Sully was played by the fantastic David Patrick Kelly, who played Luther in “The Warriors” and T-Bird in “The Crow”. Dude is a consummate villain.
“I don’t think he brought enough stuff”
Obviously a first time watch as you didn’t know he was about to show he has the infinite ammo cheat activated.
It's not just the lines it's Arnold's monotone delivery 😂
Just a boat load of fun and full on Arnold mode in this movie plus so many of his iconic one liners too.
Note: this was filmed shortly before assault rifles and SMGs were banned, you really could find them for sale back then. (Not the rocket launcher or other explosives)
This movie gave me very unrealistic expectations for gun stores & pawn shops. Come on man, where's the secret door? Where's the good stuff?
A pure, hardcore action extravaganza.
Arnold's next film after The Terminator.
From producer Joel Silver before 2 of the Die Hard films, the Lethal Weapon and The Matrix sagas.
This was Arnold in quinessential action mode and defining his legacy in the action film game.
Plenty of shoot outs without reloading, outlandish explosions, unbelievable kills and one liners galore.
Arnold and Stallone were rivals and friends in the industry.
5 months after Stallone put on Rambo:First Blood part II, Arnold came out with Commando (same year).
As a matter of fact, both characters were an influence on the CONTRA video game series by Konami.
RIP to Bill Paxton (Intercept Officer) and composer James Horner.
2 other good films from the director, Mark Lester are Stephen King's Firestarter (1984) with Drew Barrymore and Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) with Dolph Lundgren & Brandon Lee.
Conan the Destroyer and Red Sonja followed Terminator before this
@@synaesthesia2010 i didn't mention them on purpose.
They weren't good.
@@k.delpino1124I think his point was this was after Terminator.
@@michaelconnor1542 well...I said what I said.
Class of 1999 is also a real blast of late-‘80s B-movie mayhem.
Arguably the most Arnold of Arnold's films - all-action - overt-the-top and endlessly quippy and his first of the variations of a redux for "I'll Be Back"s. His "I like you Sully --- that's why I'm going too k ill you last..." and ""I lied" are just *chef's kiss.
It is truely inspiring how accurate that voice is
That impression is actually Good😂
Have you ever considered doing Arnold voice over spoofs? You're absolutely brilliant.
I'm very relieved that you noticed the chain mail was just a sweater.
Oh my God! I've watched this movie a hundred times and I've never noticed the "couple in the motel room next door" were FILMING themselves! HAHAHA!
They was making a s*x tape b4 it was a thing.
Surprised how good the impression of Arnie was by Mr Movies at the beginning.... Gave me a chuckle.
36:53 I always say Arnie is the king of the one-liners, his delivery is always spot on.
Fun fact: the actor who played Sully also played T-Bird in The Crow.
David Patrick Kelly plays the creep to absolute perfection. His despairing shriek as he falls, is masterful.
The couple in the hotel. Not only were they filming but if you look closely you'll see that the dude was on all fours with the lady behind him. 😂
The Freddy Mercury guy who plays Bennet is Vernon Wells. He was Wez in Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior and he appeared in Weird Science as basically the same character.
This movie is a classic, I can watch it over and over again, Alyssa Milano played Jenny, she also played Phoebe on the TV Series Charmed and Samantha Micelli on Who's the Boss
Also in Poison Ivy 2 which I thought was a horrible series of movies but with redeeming qualities. That being Drew Barrymore, Alyssa, and best of all, Jaime Pressley
She also played Amy Fisher in a TV movie
She was also a college student 10 years later "Embrace of The Vampire"1995 total boobies show girl-on-girl action Hollywood style then she goes on to Charmed the TV series to ruin Shannen Doherty's resumè in the series.
Sully, the guy Arnie let go is Charlie in John Wick. He's the old guy who takes care of dinner reservations.
You beat to it. 👍 He also played a character named Luther twice; In 48hrs starring Eddie Murphy, and as the lead bad guy in the Warriors. He was also good as the bad guy in Dreamscape. Good film too.
I really like this Arnold classic. Nice reaction guys. This was two years before Predator, and the Green Beret guy was with him in that film as one of his men. Nice Arnold impression. Nice Bill Paxton cameo. The flight attendant is Chelsea Field who played Teela in Masters Of The Universe (1987) with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. Arnold did Red Sonja the same year then Raw Deal in 1986.
There are so any iconic one liners in this but my favourite has to be “Let off some steam Bennet!”
Fun fact. The house they use at the end of the movie is the same house from the end of Beverly Hills Cop
the actor who played Bennett Vernon Wells, played Wez in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and played the main villain Ransik in Power Rangers Time Force
2:15 "This is for not separating your recyclables!"
Is no one going to mention how adorable their little kid is?! I almost fell over laughing.
You nailed the one part of an Arnold impression that people miss, the correct amount of flem! I guess that's a compliment?...
Man 80s action movies were so great. Once while watching this with a bunch of people on someone's Twitch those of us in chat tried to manually count each death and we got like 79-81after the climatic battle, lol.
That four barreled rocket launcher is an M202 Flash, and it's more of an incendiary weapon, so it's less about blowing up tanks and more about setting buildings.
From the 80s, when the hero NEVER has to reload. We Need a sequel. "Commando 2: Freeballin"
"Hey, Sully, remember when I said I kill you last?"
"Thats right, Matrix, you did!"
"I lied."
"Don't bother my friend, he's dead tired "
"Let off some steam, Bennett."
"You're a funny guy, Sully. It's too bad I'll have to kill you last."
you got it wrong order and you missed out the AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH as sully falls and you missed out her saying what happen to him
@@scottosborne2915
"I had to let him go"
"Their underwears' too tight" was a classic reference 😂! Classic reaction Mr and Mrs Movies 🙌
Absolutely love the steel drum rhythm playing in almost every scene....
"They need to go Commando!"
I love how she makes the bad pun and then calls HIM the idiot as if he was the one that said it. LOL.
He totally set her up for that.
As im in my 30's, this is my faaaaaavorite Arnold movies 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 ive seen this as much as independence day, ferris Buller, jurassic park 😫 my classics
Conan the Barbarian is probably my all time favorite movie. On the surface, it's a great, dark, low-fantasy adventure movie, elevated by an amazing score and interesting archetypal and philosophical themes for any who care to look deeper. As well as great production and costumes.
Do you know the riddle of steel, boy?
Arnold hadn't yet started to flex his comedy muscles, so having an actress like Rae Dawn Chong really lifts the tone so the movie isn't depressing like Death Wish or similar. She's capable (a pilot and driver), intelligent (tries several times to immediately distance herself from the kidnapper and contact the authorities), adaptable (realises who is the real villain and stops the authorities hurting Matrix/quickly devises an escape plan when he's arrested) and doesn't instantly want to jump into a relationship with a man who (justified or not) just murdered several people in front of her. Plus she's funny and cute - what's not to like?
Bennett is the motorcycle guy with Mohawk and chaps from the Road Warrior with Mel Gibson.
This is all the 80s Arnold movie distilled into one movie, action, comedy, one liners, shirtless shots , showing off his biceps. Moving down enemies to save family, it peaked Arnold, a great time watching this film
The sale of Johnson and Johnson baby oil dramatically increased after the release of this movie
RIP Sherman Oaks Galleria in Los Angeles, the mall featured in this movie.. It still technically exists, but it 's been remodeled and is now just a couple of office buildings and a few generic stores and restaurants. Nowhere near as cool as it used to be.
"He's coming at us...no brakes." LOL
Great action, great 80s, also great cheese. this is right up there with Die Hard as one of the greatest action movies ever made
My dad had a copy of this movie on VHS when I was a kid and I would watch it at least 3 or 4 times every time I spent the weekend at his place.
In addition to the 2 "Conan" movies, some good Arnold for you to watch:
"The 6th Day" (2000)
"The Last Stand" (2013)
"Raw Deal" (1986)
"Eraser" (1996)
Movie producers: So, ready to make _Commando 2_ , Arnold?
Arnold: No Chance!
Rae Down Chong was the famous actress in the movie about prehistoric life, the ''quest for fire'' (''La Guerre du feu'') from Jean Jacques Arnaud, a 1981 french-Canadian movie.
Bennett's chain-mail wifebeater is simultaneously the most impractical and most tacticool piece of kit ever worn!
Seeing David Patrick Kelly (Sully) reminds me that you need to react to "The Warriors" (1979).
This is one of the best Arnold impressions ive ever seen.
I don't know what compelled composer James Horner to go absolutely HAM on the steel drums, it doesn't really work at all, but it's just one in a long line of crazy decisions that make up Commando. You'd swear this is supposed to be a parody of 80s action movies, but everything is done with a straight face and I love it
29:00-29:30
Every MKII Fatality at once.
If you look closely at the scenes where he is firing the belt fed machine gun, you can see the belt is full of blanks and there is a blank-adapter in the flash suppressor blocking the barrel. Such cheesy 80s goodness
32:10 _There_ she is. I was _waiting_ for her to show up.
Landing is always guaranteed. Walking away after the landing is somewhat trickier.
My older cousin game me a poster of commando when I was like 12. It was the most badass thing on my wall. Friends loved it. Lol
Good Arnold impression during the intro.
The actor playing Bennett also played Wez, the red mowhawk villain in The Road Warrior
Loved the Spatula City reference. UHF rules!
I always said that if I to show them what an 80s American action film was really about that I'd show them this. Non-stop action, one liners out the wahzoo. Explosion heavy lots of different guns.
My favorite one liner of all time from Arnold is in this movie..."I eat Green Berets for Breakfast"
@@mcentepede Still can't beat the line "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass."
Rowdy Roddy Piper in They Live.
The best and iconic Arnie shoot 'em up scene: Arnold shooting an M60 with a 25-round belt and wipes out an entire paramilitary force with 100 times more bullets.
So many classic, cheesy quotes in this movie too:
"I let him (Sully) go."
"I eat Green Beret for breakfast, and I'm very hungry."
"Slitting a little girl's throat is like cutting warm butter."
and my favorite...
"You don't need the girl. You can beat me. What's the matter Bennett? Don't you want to put the knife in me? Don't you want to look me in the eye and see what goes on when you turn it? Don't deprive yourself the pleasure. C'mon Bennett....let's PARTEEEE."
The funniest moment of the film was Arnold getting into Bennett's head about killing John with his knife. Next, Bennett has the biggest turn on ever.
Rae Dawn Chong is the Daughter of Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong...Arnold`s Daughter in this movie is Alyssa Milano of " Who`s the boss " and " Charmed ".
I can confirm Spatula City was never across the way from Surplus City 🤣🤣
You should say "Matt Damian" in Arnie voice 😂 👍🏻
