SpongeBob is Autistic

- SpongeBob SquarePants is confirmed to be on the spectrum, as revealed by SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny. Since his debut on Nickelodeon 25 years ago, SpongeBob has acted a bit different than everyone else. This explains why he does the things he does, but Tom wants people to know that's a strength instead of a weakness.

Fun fact. Sea sponges can live up to 200 years or more. So that could explain why Spongebob acts like a kid even though he’s an adult. He’s old enough to be considered an adult. But as a sponge, he’s still a kid.
Wait, that actually makes sense!
ooh yeah that makes sense i never thought about it like that.

@UnBúhoLlamadoBruno So in sponge years, 6-8 years old. Checks out.
I’m diagnosed with Asperger’s, which is on the autistic spectrum, and I used to watch SpongeBob as a kid. After listening to this, I have to say major respect to Tom Kenny and I’m so glad that SpongeBob is a character that proves to be a representation of the younger audience who watch the series! Love this!
Don't count Asperger as autism unless you have a really strong one.
Remember you shouldn't use that word due to having a horrible background to it and the man who discovered it worked with the no no hate group duing ww2 and tortured autistic people
If you’re diagnosed with that there is a chance you’re not even on the spectrum at all and you were lied to

As an autistic person, I'm sad to see people are calling tom a liberal for having autistic characters
Yeah, what does politics have to do with having an autistic character, anyway? The internet confuses me sometimes…
It's because many (not all) people on the spectrum are also known to identify as LGBTQIA+. Hillensberg had previously stated that SpongeBob is asexual, which is what the A in acronym meancs, ICYWA.
As a conservative. What?! 🤨
It's refreshing to see an autistic main character in a hit TV show that has been running for 2.5 decades, in a sea of other shows where autistic people are punching bags.

As a person on the autism spectrum who loves cartoon characters, it makes me happy to see a very famous cartoon character, one who is a global phenomenon, with it. Im not really a spongebob fan but i still find this cool.
This videos pretty misleading, because while Tom Kenny said he was, it’s still not really official to the show and isn’t confirmation. SpongeBob was made back in the 90’s, where they likely weren’t trying to show neurodivergent representation and probably wasn’t the intention by the creators. However if you still want the belief of SpongeBob being neurotypical and you relate to him, that’s great and you go for it 👍

Same. While SpongeBob comes off as rather autism and adhd coded to me as someone with both, the super power rhetoric is just getting exhausting at this point.
It's more like a double edged sword. A blessing at times and a curse at times. So yeah... like a superpower, but one that backfires and has limitations.

I always feel weird about ‘X CHARACTER COMFIRMED TO HAVE X THING.’ Such as being autistic, as I’m autistic myself. I always felt like most peeps are using it to get brownie points with audiences or something. It’s mostly something coming from a company’s mouth instead of the creator, so you won’t hear it being mentioned in the series…
This is a bit different. Tom is likely playing SpongeBob how he sees him, an actor can make their own judgements and the creators can say if it’s true or not. This likely isn’t canon, just how Tom thinks Bob is. Honestly this makes sense, long as SpongeBob doesn’t do anything that’s just a bad autistic stereotype at this point (which is hard seeing he’s pretty much done everything at this point before we had any confirmation of autism), so basically this should be fine.
I agree with this, I personally don’t think it’s actually canon seeing as autism awareness genuinely did not exist in the 90s, I don’t believe these characters were designed with that in mind at that point of time
Ignore the bot. He just wants your attention.
Which I'm so glad with. I don't know how I'd feel if Nick confirmed that SpongeBob was Autistic. It doesn't really fit him at all. Yes he's goofy and yes he's kind, But so is every other cartoon character. With SpongeBob, It doesn't really work for me.
@@pawku2150 Well kinda. I don’t 100% mind if people like the idea of X character being autistic, it does bug me a wee bit, but overall believe what you want and like whatever makes you happy.
What I was saying is that there is a major difference between Tom Kenny confirming this and Nick, the company, confirming this (bit tougher now seeing Hillenberg has passed so he couldn’t give his input if he wanted to). It’s hard for a company to not look like they are doing this just to look good. Tom Kenny is a more simple man who seems honest about what he does, I can buy him thinking this.
@@hiddenflare6169 Yeah I wasn't trying to say that you aren't allowed to think a character is autistic. You can do what you want with that. I don’t like how he said autism was their super power though, as an autistic person. There are some things I like about my autism, yes, but it’s still a disability. Disabilities tend to be disabling, and the “super power” rhetoric is often used by low support needs autistic people and allistic people to to distance those with low support needs from autistic people with high support needs and autistic people with learning/intellectual disabilities, as well as distance themselves from the disabled community as a whole. That rhetoric is also often used as justification to refuse autistic people the accommodations that they need. It’s also a slippery slope into eugenics rhetoric also.
I'm also on the spectrum and agree with a lot of what you are saying. The "autism is your superpower" bit rubbed me the wrong way..
He would be the type of person to support autism speaks
I agree, but let's not bring comorbidities into this. That's the other extreme. Intellectual disablity/disorder isn't a part of autism no matter what opinion we have or where we look at it. That's why we're stigmatized. I mean, I don't say autistic, or allistic, people who have it should be ashamed, no, they just have a bad association and it's getting on us too with piling other disorders on us that make us seem "harder to be around" or "high effort people". That's why some people think autism+epilepsy+down syndrome ( isn't even that comorbid )+dyspraxia+intellectual disabilty=autism, when it's just autism=autism. I hope you understand what I mean.
Doesn't bother me tbh😂
As an autistic person, watching that clip and hearing Tom say “it’s his superpower like how it’s your superpower,” instantly made me tear up. The question still remains, though: Was it part of Stephen Hillenburg's original vision?
Stephen wanted the character to be simple and small. He was annoyed when Spongebob blew up into a cultural phenomenon and the writers under him at the time were against labeling him gay because "thats not what the show is". I am positive he would have HATED this
@@miragenights801 Look, I, too, think he can't confirm such things because he's not with us anymore and it was likely a "well, idk what to say, I say yes to make the person who asked it happy" situation, but I think saying he would "HATE it" is a bit of a negative exaggeration. I’m afraid I’m going to have to be in the minority here. As an autistic person, I’m always looking for quality representation in the media. If you’re autistic and you relate to Spongebob, that’s perfectly fine! However, I feel like the decision to make him autistic was so last-minute. It seems very odd to me that SpongeBob's voice actor would say that because there were never many hints in the show that he was autistic.
To be honest, I think the only reason Tom Kenny confirmed it was because he didn’t want to hurt that person’s feelings. I also don't believe SpongeBob's creator, Stephen Hillenburg, intended for him to have autism. Because if he had, the series would’ve turned out differently. A well-written autistic character is always planned out ahead of time, not something added at the last minute. Unless Nickelodeon themselves say something about SpongeBob’s autism or make an episode about it, I’m not going to accept this as canon.
Speaking of Nickelodeon, they’re currently celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary. If SpongeBob is autistic, why didn't they mention that when the show first premiered? What makes now so special?
We don’t deserve last-minute autistic characters. As the autistic community, we deserve better.
agree
Exactly. This is all happening to appeal to minorities and be "inclusive".
Exactly.
I'm not looking for "representation" at all, but slapping it onto something that already exists and handing it to me to get brownie points from me is just insulting.
I grew up with SpongeBob and it was never that kind of show. It was never about deep personal lives and struggles or anything like that - so don't bring it up. It'd be like canonizing a character in SpongeBob to have epilepsy or something and then never having an episode address it because that'd be incredibly inappropriate and tone deaf for the style of the show; just don't go there in the first place
Yeah I am another autistic person who found it very weird to have them do this. I couldn’t explain why at first but your comment really explains everything I needed to say.
Actually Tom Kenny was just interviewed and he said that he never intended what he said with that fan to end up going as big and public as it did. He said that he does have that as headcanon but admitted that he isn’t qualified to speak on what autism is or what the true canon of the show is.
I was at that comic con! Heck I went to that paneling
That's so lovely, and thank you for the sweet message.
As a late diagnosed autistic person that’s related to SpongeBob their whole life and never really knew why, this is incredibly comforting
I wouldn’t say it’s confirmed just because the voice actor says it. He has not authority on the canon.
Also there is one thing about that Paramount didn't tell us but I just found out the news that Tom Kenny will be returning the voice of Starscream and he will be voice in the new Transformers movie which I'm actually surprise
Well that makes two of us.
I tought he was ADHD like me
He could have ADHD
Well, about SpongeBob not having an angry bone in his body, that's totally false. In the early episodes, SpongeBob doesn't get angry, unless someone pushes him really hard or takes advantage of him by using his innocence against him, like manipulating him and all that stuff. Like in the episode "Argh...", SpongeBob and Patrick were playing a board game together. Mr. Krabs wanted to join them in the board game, and Mr. Krabs got so invested that they were playing until it was night. SpongeBob got so tired that he went home, but Mr. Krabs just followed him in order to keep playing that board game, as Mr. Krabs kept pressuring him to play the game, SpongeBob got so fed up that he yelled "MR. KRABS, I WANT TO GO TO BED!"
Other episodes do feature SpongeBob getting angry, like "Something smells" where Patrick was accidentally suffocating SpongeBob with his bad breath. SpongeBob called Patrick's name over and over, but he won't listen, so SpongeBob just got really annoyed that he yelled "PATRICK!"
Other instances include Mr. Krabs going on a date with Mrs. Puff, and SpongeBob had to hold Krabs's wallet to keep Krabs from overspending, but Mr. Krabs just gets nervous and sends SpongeBob to buy things for Mrs. Puff, only for SpongeBob to come back and Mrs. Puff claims that she doesn't need it at the moment, which led Mr. Krabs to scold SpongeBob even though it was Eugene's idea, which led SpongeBob to snap and even mocked Mr. Krabs with the pirate accent and all. There's a lot more, but overtime SpongeBob rarely if not never gets angry again.
Never thought they would actually confirm this about SpongeBob.
As an autistic person this makes me happy but more so just how kind and sweet Tom Kenny is about it.
Is tomorrow autistic himself though,
Is tom himself autistic?
I'm autistic. I'm not a fan of the "superpower" mantra, I'd rather him lean to the positive than the negative. I'd rather him use unrealistic optimism than the negative like far too many people do when it comes to disability.
Yea this isn't a huge shock for my as an autistic person. He has a lot of tell tale sighs of autism. He's obsesses with nesh hobbies like jelly fishing and cooking. He doesn't fully understand social cues from characters like squidward. He doesn't understand sarcasm. These are pretty common in autistic people. Whilst not all those things apply to me, some do and I've absolutely seen those traits in other autistic people I know.

This whole time I finally knew that he was autistic. Because and his perspective, SpongeBob sees the world and colorful things just like an autistic
That contradicts the damn alarm he has each time he wakes up. It must be really loud for SpongeBob
You know what... I can buy it. Especially when you don't treat autism as a defect. SpongeBob is optimism incarnate with an embrace for what he does best, along with being sociable, engaging, and jovial. This makes him one of the best. Tom Kenny being so liberal about casually saying SpongeBob is autistic and treating it like matter of fact is honestly why I love and respect Tom so much.
Yea but I'm sure spongebob would collaborate with autism speaks

There's a horror movie that uses this as a plot device, true
Remember when he was portrayed as a person?
As an actual autistic person, I can confirm that SpongeBob represents me

I’m Autistic too but My mom said that I’m autistic but I Don’t feel that I’m autistic
Abelist people when they see this video: 😩😩🤬🤬😭😭😵
Yeah some of the comments in here are so mind-boggling. There was one I saw of people saying they “hate the show now”, simply because he’s autistic.
I have to admit-- is it weird I didn't expect the news to be taken so badly? I thought we all knew spongebob wasn't normal, that was always part of his charm.
Some people are acting like we stole a character though. Like... you could always just not take Tom's words to heart. I don't think many people actually mind if it isn't recognized as canon. I don't. I'm just happy Tom meant well :]
I’m autistic and am confused, he has no symptoms at all
@@Chudboreanyes he does. he shows so many signs of autism throughout the series, and it’s not just him acting hyper all the time.
He became autistic after season 4
No he hasn't
I thought he was confirmed to have ADHD. And as a person with autism its too accurate.
I would hate if he had ADHD, and this is coming from someone who has ADHD, mainly because of the way SpongeBob is represented, which is being over the top, crazy (in modern seasons) if SpongeBob was still the way he was in season 1-4 I wouldn't have a problem.
TRy wATching "A better schedule for Nickelodeon's main block" by Evan Rosman.
As someone who’s autistic, myself, AND shares a birthday with SpongeBob (though being a year younger than him), this news makes me feel I can relate to him a lot more than I thought I could. Congratulations, SpongeBob, you’re officially 20 percent cooler in my book!!
Edit: (Also, are those songs from the “Pokémon Diamond and Pearl” games I hear playing in the background? Good choice, Vail!)
"Spongebob is Austistic" was a video in my recommended.
That's the most wild title I've seen from a SpongeBob video 💀🙏
Fr😭🙏
Idk, confirming that SpongeBob is autistic is pretty lukewarm compared to that video titled "Sandy Cheeks Rule 34 is worth it"
Nah😭🙏
Next up, “SpongeBob caused 9/11”
SPONGEBOB IS SO RELATABLE!
Very cool and I loved the lighting on Spongebob
This jolly happy spongy god has the same spectrum as me….
Ok this is probably the most surprising news I have seen all day and honestly I am both shocked and really happy at the same time as a person who has autism myself it really warms my heart that Tom Kenny (the voice actor for SpongeBob) said that the spectrum and seeing the world differently is a superpower not a crime just really makes me proud and happy that more people are treating people with autism with such kindness and humility and I am just so happy and honestly really surprised that SpongeBob is canonically autistic and that really made my day💗😊
Welcome to the family sponge
As much as I see this as a positive, tom kenny can't really say that like it's true, mostly because he did not create the character, I' not calling a mindless liberal or an idiot, but he only voices the character, but even if not "oficially" is still nice to imagine him like that, love tom and sponge 🧽
I’m gonna be tested for autism, I can relate to SpongeBob. I was nervous, and I don’t really blame myself. But now I know it’s okay to be different. Disabilities don’t define who you are, you yourself defines who you are.
Now that I know that SpongeBob is autistic I feel like I can connect with him more than I did before and now that I think about it he did have a lot of the traits of autism that I have
First they said he’s gay, and now he’s on the spectrum.
As an Autistic person myself, this frankly pisses me off deeply. We don’t exist to be cash grabs for greedy corporations who otherwise couldn’t care less. Not to mention how this is really disrespectful to Mr. Hillenburg.
How are other spectral people praising this? Do you not realize that the only reason Nickelodeon’s doing this is for your money?
When did they say he was gay???

Well, this all makes sense, no wonder why I like SpongeBob SO MUCH, especially when after a few years of my diagnosis, I still see SpongeBob as relatable to me. Especially when I'm still an adult, I still get to have a chance to become more childish whenever as possible to maintain confidence, stability, and happiness. I'm glad that SpongeBob is still here, even after the fact that it was supposed to end after the release of the movie, I still enjoy it in occasional times.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Mr Krabs sold SpongeBob’s soul for 62 cents
