  • Tim Mahoney and Anthony Bruneni are back with another episode of the DIY 'Till I Die truck! On this episode, they installed the 6-Speed Conversion Kit on the LB7. Why is this a modification they wanted on the truck? One of their goals for this truck was to use it as a tow pig hauling toys long distance. The 6-Speed Conversion Kit helps reduce RPMS meaning your 2001-2005 6.6L now is quieter at highway speeds and gets a little bit better fuel economy. They discuss the 6-Speed Conversion Kit benefits, the installation, and why it was needed for their build right here!

    I have a 2002 Duramax with which I tow a fifth wheel trailer. At 15,700 lbs., the trailer is kind of at the max of what the truck is rated to tow. I love my truck. It has only 133,000 miles on it. No DEF. Federal emissions, so no catalytic converter. I also love my trailer, an Arctic Fox 29-5t . I am full time living in the trailer. What I'd like is an improvement in it's ability to climb the grades when going through mountains. My thought is to change the rear end from the stock 3.73 to 4.10 or a rear end shop even recommended going to 4.30. This would obviously increase the RPMs, so I thought of putting one of these conversion kits on the transmission. Mostly for the times I'm not towing, so that my engine wouldn't be screaming at me at highway speeds.
    A tuner was also suggested by a local diesel shop, but I don't want to overdo that and blow head gaskets or prematurely wear other things.
    Any thoughts? Thank you.

      @wellandhealthy-ef6nd Excellent question! Changing your gearing and adding our 6-speed conversion kit will not be your one way ticket. In order to properly take advantage of our 6 speed conversion kit you will need to have engine tuning to have the power to support the overdrive gear. Not to mention simply changing out your rear end will without tuning for it will put you in an even worse spot as all of your programed shift points will now be off for what your gearing is designed for. You will definitely want to get set up with engine tuning first as this has the potential to fix your issue on its own and you need it to run the 6-speed conversion/ring gear upgrade. Then if you still feel like you are being forced to hold the truck at high RPM's for an extended period of time in 5th gear it would be worth upgrading to the 6 speed conversion kit. The final upgrade I would make is the ring gear and this would only be if you are still being forced to hold the truck at high RPM's in 6th gear. Like mentioned before doing this upgrade first will be center productive and you will basically need to back track to a point that could have already potentially solved your issue.

      Wow. Great advice. I'm glad I asked. No one else I've talked to has said this. Totally makes sense. Thanks!

    I have one of your valve body in my 2001 for the most part ran fine but 5 to 4 , downshift was the biggest problem was ruff and trying to get the shift point adjusted is a active of Congress I’m Utah. I’ve seen some trucks wouldn’t except the 6 speed conversion for some reason they try to couple of them might’ve been the transmissions problem but truck works when you put it back stock

      I have the same issue in my LLY. have about 8000 miles on the new vale body and 5-4 shifts hard. Sometimes jerks the whole truck. Not sure if i need a built tranny or what but I didnt have this issue prior to installing this. Works fine when its in stock or a lower tune.@@Duramaxtuner

    Not too sure you want to be in 6th gear aka double overdrive while towing.

    • @AnthonyDuramaxTuner
      @AnthonyDuramaxTuner Před 10 měsíci

      Really depends on your MPH. Higher MPH it is fine in 6th Gear. If you are close to that 55-60 MPH mark while towing then 5th gear is much more ideal.
      We also have an OD lockout when you are in tow/haul to give you some control over the 6th gear engagement while towing.

      @2015_Rubicnn Před 10 měsíci

      @AnthonyDuramaxTuner I have the 6 speed conversion, and all I have ever towed with is tow haul mode. The rpm is just fine towing in 5th gear.

    • @hyrumjessop5568
      @hyrumjessop5568 Před 10 měsíci

      The 6 speed conversion will not go to 6 gear with on tow haul on with the 5 speed transmission conversion. 06 transmission will go in to 6 gear in tow haul on so you can convert it to a newer transmission with more options and easier to adjust the valve body to your liking that’s not locked up

      @@2015_Rubicnn Whichever is easiest for you!
      Myself I cruise on the highway around 75-80 and 6th gear crusing is best for my driving style. When I pass someone or am at slower speeds, 5th gear is ideal in that scenario.
