    Completely disagree with your take. As you said it yourself a few videos ago, we have come to a point in time of hyper specialization, skaters who are VERY focused on flatground tricks. And what makes skateboarders have a good career is entertainment. People obviously are entertained by skaters like Jamie or Giger, so they will keep pushing for those tricks and that type of content. They will not win any SLS championships or put out insane video parts, but they will be remembered in their own way - there is no right or wrong way to skate.

      Dumb data only meant money-wise, don't put stuff in his mouth. money-wise, only a few succeed in the end, while making a good street part is a safe way to get sponsors etc. e.g. take a look at Ollie Fevang who had like no recognition even tho he did some REALLY crazy flat tricks, was uploading NBDs weekly and was featured by Giger himself and that still wasn't enough. meanwhile there is >imo< so many RELATIVELY mediocre skaters (obviously compared to regular skaters they're insane, but compared to other pros they just aren't) who bring nothing new, yet are sponsored by big brands.

  • @kevinandrewsphoto
    @kevinandrewsphoto Před 11 měsíci +30

    I think you did a good job explaining the divide when it comes to new and old BATB. When the contest started, they pool’d together some of the best street skaters and you got to see how good they were at flatground. And we got to see which pros were more consistent than others. But they were all still street skaters.
    Due to the influence of BATB, kids grew up only wanting to compete in games of SKATE. Forgoing the street skating route. And focused more on highly technical tricks to win games.
    This has diminished BATB in 2 major ways.
    1.) the contest is no longer wall to Wall Street skaters. You have a lot of flatground only skaters like Griffin, Cepeda, Peterson and Giger
    2.) the biggest knock is the quality of the games. They are all much shorter.
    When watching BATB, everybody is hoping for the same thing. What makes a battle good is, a high amount of tricks, two seemingly evenly matched skaters, running out of basic tricks and having to reach deep in your pocket, and the other skater landing mentioned deep pocket tricks.
    The largest cheers you’ll hear during a BATB match are when a skater lands a trick nobody thought they would.
    Think of P-Rods fakie 540 flip, or Mike Mo’s switch double tre.
    But unless a skater purposefully trained the weeks leading up, they’re not gonna have a chance against a double hardflip, or dolphin flip

    • @95mcqueen5
      @95mcqueen5 Před 11 měsíci +5

      There's nothing wrong with that. You have skaters who prefer park, street, flatground, freestyle... There's competitions for all of them. And about the cheering during the match, you must have missed Jamie vs Zach

    • @Lantement
      @Lantement Před 11 měsíci +2

      People skate how they want; street, flat, freestyle, vert, oldschool
      In a flatground competition, I want to see the best in flatground
      Especially if I get to see some unusual tricks, it doesn't matter how long the battle lasts
      That's what skateboarding's influence and advancement allows, people who specialize.

    • @EDCsteals
      @EDCsteals Před 11 měsíci

      I somewhat agree with you but you’re only remembering all the good battles from previous years. There were LOTS of crappy ones even when it was just street skating pros competing. It’s easy to look back over the past 12 seasons and handpick the best battles from memory. What I think had a big hand on messing up the quality of battles is the Berrics bias to put in people who are aligned with them through business or personal relationships. Look at all the Cariuma skaters that have been in the last two seasons. We know damn well some of them don’t belong anywhere near this competition. I think as the years progress they should make a separate BATB specifically for the “flatground specialists” cuz every year there will be more of them coming to light, another BATB for just the “street skating pros” & then another for the girls. Although I kinda take bakc what I said about the girls. Unfortunately as good as they are getting in contests & in the street I don’t think we’ll ever see their flatground progress at the same level because they don’t have the power in their legs to do some of the flatground tricks. I hope I’m wrong cuz it would be cool To see their group come out with some flatground beasts but I think we’re still a ways from that

    There is no such thing as "circus tricks" or tricks that are desperate or ridiculous, there are just people who can do them and people who can't, those who can't do it fill themselves with excuses to justify that they can't, those who can do it, they just do it, and that's it, they don't think about where the tricks come from, skateboarding should be fun, there should be no rules for what is considered a good trick or a bad trick, in any case the only person who could decide something like that, should be able to do all of them.

    • @dannyblitz2122
      @dannyblitz2122 Před 11 měsíci

      @@petesmite I don't think there is anything wrong with skaters agreeing some tricks are more pleasing or beautiful than others. Many 'circus' tricks are not difficult, there is no glory in knowing how to do them or be consistent with them, they just dont look that good or translate well to fast, flowing street lines. That's normal in any art. it's not negativity, it's discernemnt. Most skaters dont spend time on learning multiple 'circus' tricks because they would rather spend their time refining and honing their skills at what they love to see and do, to do it the best they can and because that feels the best to do. Think about a pressure flip down ten stairs versus a kickflip. Imagine doing it and seeing it. Which feels better? Which looks better?

      I think that Andy invited some crowd associated with him plus his girlfriend and that apparently pressured him, hence the loud cheers for Andy when he missed. He was riding ridiculously slow and missed a lot, which to me seemed like a clear sign of being nervous and full of self-doubt. Overall that match was full of an Office level cringe.

Jeff is known for his style, big gaps, huge triple flips and is the only person to have a high succes rate at an interesting and unique approach to the skateboarding trick called inward heelflip. Dumb football data:
    1. A reference to the defense of Mike Ditka’s ‘85 Bears is a bit nonsensical. While Ditka was technically the head coach that year, (a) he’s not famously a great head coach, and (b) his entire background was in Offense and he was the de facto offensive coordinator. The ‘85 Bears legendary defense with which the team’s success is primarily credited was coordinated by the great Buddy Ryan, the only non-HeadCoach coordinator to ever get carried off the Superbowl Field on his players’ shoulders. Ditka had nothing to do with the ‘85 Bears defense, and was often an annoyance to them. There’s a great 30-for-30 episode on the ‘85 Bears.
    2. The old saying is “defense wins Championships”, not “defense wins games”. Anything and everything including crazy flukes can win a single random game (and they’ve always kept it that way to maximize engagement) but the belief in the oldschool pre-2000s league (back when, due to rules, it was more true) was that defense wins Championships, meaning it would make the biggest difference across the Many games of the season. This is of course less true these days, in the modern era of adoption (for several reasons) of offense-friendly rules.
    Still, good on you for trying to work in sportsball analogies from outside skateboarding! ❤
