The thing about buttons, knobs and switches is you can feel them and therefore use them without looking and also hold them when the road has bumps. Touchscreens suck over a bumpy road surface.
1000% this. yeah touch screens are easy to use when you're parked... its when you're driving and have to keep your eyes on the road most of the time that they suck. and you can keep touch screens, just leave the commonly used stuff as buttons and knobs, like hvac and basic audio controls...
But most of the time, you are not using them, but when you get used to it the issues go away.
Yup! And also, it's easy to fix individual components without a hefty price tag. I wonder how much one of those infotainment systems cost + installation + programming to VIN
The guys who engineer the touchscreens also don't like them but marketing and management want touchscreen, so they have to develop touch screens
Ian is exactly right. I have to take my eyes off the road to look at the touch screen. Knobs you can grab instinctively and keep your eyes on the road. Come on Dodge..
The cinematography in this episode is absolutely incredible, amazingly done
It's almost as if VW gave them new equipment!
@@ncmartinez_his Proooooof? The only new equipment I see is the R.
The edit was top notch
Lighting is on point
Agreed. Its the first thing I noticed was the great lighting.
How are these guys so good at everything? This was amazing, a true real world review ! You should do more of these! No bullshit or bollocks pure facts. Great job guys !!
"How are these guys so good at everything?"
They are not, you are delusional, seek help quickly
"True real world reviews" don't happen in a garage like this one. What about real-world usability in common situations when you need to make changes to your navigation, climate, or soundtrack, while you're driving?
Please do more of these…. This is exactly what journalism needs!
It needs honesty, experience, and all in all a realistic view point.
This episode was definitely different... The production quality was next level
the production quality has blown my mind! I haven't sunk my teeth into a review like this since the old top gear days.
Always at the cutting edge these guys
Sounds scripted
@@aidencoombes2562 Of course it's scripted??? I'd like to see you do a 19 minute review and make it sound good without a script.
I think the controversy about the controls isn’t that it doesn’t work well but that the old system was better and worked better and vw needlessly over engineered and changed something that dident need to be changed
If everything is on the touch screen which is in the car regardless, they don't have to pay for switchgear
@@robl1541 There's chips in the switches too. Modern cars aren't wired to anything directly anymore. As an example, a modern power window system can involve 3 computers in your car. There's one in the switch that receives you switch press, encodes it, sends it to the body control module, which in turn can trigger a 3rd module that the window is attached to.
Anything that happens to that communication bus brings the entire car down. And yes, it has happened. Watch DiagnoseDan's video on a BMW that had a faulty passenger door handle - it brought down the network in the car and the car would not start. Yes, a bad door handle immobilized the whole car.
Cars are needlessly complex nowadays.
@Rombat over complicate things then! Why do i need a special set of tools, why does the oil pan looks like a damn maze compared to all the other manufacturer. jeeez!
I have a mk8 r line and it's currently at vw as the infotainment screen is not working so no heating control or safety systems so mmmmmmmm not perfect
Change and innovation not always a good thing but most probably cheaper and will stop you upgrading the steering wheel.
I wish everyone did reviews like this. This is the best review ever. So honest, so time effective, great cuts/scenes. Absolutely perfect.
This is one of the best car reviews I’ve seen period. Please do more of these types of videos. Car reviews with no BS just the facts. The honesty and showing how others are making up issues that don’t really exist. I am just getting to the new videos you’ll post. I have been watching the older videos. Keep up the great work!!

@@taginbagin whats up man fancy seeing you here lmao!
EDIT: Just finished the video and I am so HYPED to hear one of my favorite channels are getting one! Hope you can eventually make it a beast like the mk7!
Plain and simply the best car review I have ever seen. I love how blunt Moog is. I wish you'd do more of these!
Moog : demonstrates how easy the infotainment is to use.
Me watching : it looks even more unnecessarily complicated and hard to use than I heard it was.
Yeah digital will ALWAYS be more complicated and "harder" to use than good ol knobs
Hahaha, yep. "It's not hard to put into launch mode" Shows how easy (not really "easy") it is to do it after making it a shortcut 🤣
OMFG i thought the same thing.. I still hate it haha. Not only the issue of it being harder to use, but the fact that little sensor may be cheaper than a dial of some sort, but its gonna be marketed as the "future"
Really it is crap...multiple buttons before you’re able to change the temperature and you have to switch on the radio.
And more expensive. You can only use radio, Bluetooth, back up camera drive assist. Other than that can be remove
Just got back from a week in a tiguan rental with the same steering wheel - turned the wheel heater on multiple times... If you're letting the wheel move through your stationary hand after a turn it's easy to do.
Yep agreed, it’s horrible to deal with whenever you’re making a big enough turn. I wish they just stuck to buttons for the steering wheel, ruined an otherwise amazing car.
Surely an easy fix would be a software update where you have to press and hold for 3 seconds or triple tap would solve this issue? Either way, it’s an oversight by the ergonomics department.
This. I drove a friends Mk8 GTi for 20ish minutes and turned the heated steering wheel on/off 4 times. I'm sure you'd adapt and be more consious of your thumbs, but yeah all the complaints are justified.
Hahaha, exactly. You don't keep the steering wheel stationary
Never let go of the wheel, driving 101.
This is sick, would be cool every so often for Moog and Marty to do there honest reviews on latest car releases. Nice one Moog 🤙
Best car review format I’ve ever seen! Really love this! Do more of this please.
The engine bay "can you imagine" made me laugh so much. I love how subtle that was!
I love this next generation of MCM. Such motivation watching your progression.
Same
I've been watching for years and the production just gets better and better! Well done boys.
This is an awesome, honest and well done car review.
This is the way.
Great job once more!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Moog, if you held the wheel exactly as you did and turned it 90 degrees to the left your palm would have been perfectly over the heated steering wheel button. That is how. The auto journos aren't hitting it while driving straight.
He's in defense mode, because he's a fan
I have driven my DSG GOLF R on the dragon and snake here in east tn (you cannot get anymore instances in a single road where your hands would be in this position more) and I have yet to turn on the heated steering wheel.
@@shawncarr9855 you could have your hands in that position more often in just a carpark building🤣
This is a press car that I drove daily for weeks. In the spirited heat of a track drive/drift then maybe. But I did not have an issue with it at all.
@@darianistead2239 the point to my comment was while driving through 119 turns I have not accidentally turned on the heated steering wheel how would you in normal maneuvering. Thought that was obvious.
Really liking the visual style of this video, looking good in super garage 🤙
First thing I thought as well.
More of these vids! Really great to hear ur takes on these stuff.
Really really really really hoping you continue this style of reviews with other cars in the future, loved it! It’s not your usual content but it’s totally refreshing and I’m interested in your take about many new cars out there.
And thats why MCM is my favourite show. Moog just relates to my brutal honesty with no regard for sooks with delicate feelings. Love it. Never change a thing guys
The most honest MK8 Golf R review I've seen on CZcams thus far.
I love the lighting of this episode, amazing work!
Please do more car reviews ! The presentation is great and the commentary is very refreshingly honest.. more please :)
i've been watching for along time boys, seen a lot of gems you all have put out, but this one was something special
Thanks mate
Really rate the increase in production. Wanna see more reviews like this! Moog is a great host
Another fantastic shot and edited episode!
I appreciate your alternative take on the much-lamented infotainment. Cheers!
Really loving the lighting and camera work in this video. You've done well setting up the garage for filming.
Everything from the lighting, the cinematography all the way to the punchlines were A+ on this video. Volkswagen should just make this video their commercial and it would attract buyers.
Goodday! Best review I've seen! Cheers guys 😅
Dude, this was a really good review. Good job
I've fat fingered the heated steering wheel a few times changing the radio 😅
The ESC is set up differently in mine. Must take a look to see if it can be changed for the quicker swipe down setting here.
He has a shortcut made to the ESC menu
It won't be long now until you need to subscribe to a paid update service for your car to get stuff like that, and to unlock the menu item that allows your passengers to keep their feets.
Love watching you legends. Also loving the classics content, as an FC owner I loved seeing your Rx7 down at the WTA the other weekend Marty and Moogs that 240 looks gorgeous.
I'm waiting for the day you pair make an episode and start it with "Here we have our new old 1972 Nissan Hakasuka"
Y’all are great. Keep up the great work!
The lighting is spot on. Nice job!
I'm not sure what you've changed but the lighting and camera work on this episode is seriously amazing.. absolutley incredible. looking forward to some next level content coming up!!
Touch controls might be okay in Australia, but in freezing winters in Canada, it sucks. Especially if I'm diving with gloves, or if I'm trying to warm the car by setting the climate controls, my current Jetta I can spin the temp setting, poke at the defroster, windshield blower, go back out to scrape ice off my windows. It takes about 10 minutes for the car to actually become warm so I'm definitely not taking my gloves off when driving until much later. On the steering wheel, right now I can still change volume with gloves on, next song no problem. I don't have to care about accidental touch when I'm turning the wheel either, I can feel for the buttons on my steering wheel when driving without looking, but with VW's new setup, is it possible to click something as you're driving when you're trying to get the correct button?
I don't mind touch controls where it isn't controlling something frequently used or important. But for high use cases and cold climates, it's not fun. Heck sometimes it's cold enough the LCD screen doesn't quite work properly, it might take seconds for it to transition from one display item to another.
To say nothing of when it's REALLY cold and the displays lag
Shopdap did a video and these buttons work with any gloves btw. Don't need the special touch screen ones for it to work.
@@Christian3522 good to know, I'm surprised that it worked that well with gloves.
I have a Mk.6 Jetta which is very similar to Mk.7 golf R control layout. Perhaps the new R isn't all that bad, but the older controls were really well designed, very intuitive and easy to use.
The touch isn't as much as a deal breaker as I initially thought, but it is more complicated and less friendly.
@@ronochow I want to check it out myself to really judge how it is but there isn't any in Canada really right now. I work with computers so tech doesn't scare me as well.
The lighting and camera work gives such a surreal vibe. I havent finished watching yet but this would be a great start to a car review segment for MCM
Loved the review! Also liked the random camera shots, genuinely fantastic. To answer your question about the "TRON light bar" I quite like it; something about it is cool to me; I preferred the headlights shape/style of the MK7 though.
Moog, they have justification in calling it harder to use when the screen is slow to react, freezes and you can't see the controls without taking your eyes off the road. When the car is worse than the Mk7.5 in some parts, that's where the problem starts.
I own a 2022 MK8 GTI, it has the latest software and works absolutely fine, no freezing or lag, the non back lit temp and volume control Is also a non issue, I can honestly say I’ve not once thought about it while using the car at night, once you know your way around the menus (24hrs max) it is a total breeze to use, I sold my 2020 M135i xDrive and bought the Mk8 GTI, I have zero regrets about doing so! The Mk8 (in my case a GTI) IS AWSOME! 👌
@@cfbm125 Still a slow outdated system that requires you to take your eyes off the road unlike the Mk7.5.
Absolutely loving the look of the new shop, made it feel so mcm so fast
The lighting looks much better now, keep it up! I wasn’t a fan of the brightly lit shop when all of the overhead lights were on. Thumbs up!
Congrats on the purchase Moog! You deserve it
wait a minute....did Moog just Rick Rolled us?!? 11:50
I think touch sensors are okay as long as they're responsive. I have 2018 Civic and love it but there's no volume knob and using the screen doesn't always work and is just clunky. It was bad enough that they used a knob for the following models years.
I have a 1986 928 Porsche.. I don't have to worry about touchsceen crap... why do people worry about a touchsceen..
Your driving a car, not a frigging ipad...
Car is, steering wheel, loud pedal, and brakes..
Not some stupid touchsceen... I have a gaming tower with G920 wheel and pedals.. if you want to drive like that..
Touchsceens should be Banned...
@@graemejohnson9025 I honestly agree about them being banned. I got the car because I liked the car, the screen wasn't necessarily the selling point for me.
@@graemejohnson9025 Agreed. I bought a 997.1 911 for a reason - it's the last year before touch screens
I love these videos, amazing review. You should review cars often!
Thank you! Seeing your run through of the infotainment has me way less worried about the Golf R I have on order (I currently drive a Mk 7.5 GTI). I still don't LIKE that they've taken all the knobs away, but I think I'll adapt.
It's really a pretty good looking car and with a manual being available in the US, I may have to take a look, though the touch screen only interface would almost be a deal breaker. I really dislike them, and feel like they are big distractions.
Great review! It will be fun to see what you do with it!
Seriously it is soo annoying to use you’ll regret buying the car..Trust me i know.
It’s weird, I’d prefer manual In Any other car than a VAG, the DSG, just fits and works so good
@@ertebelj it fits the character of the car more honestly. Being German and clinical and all. Having a manual in a Golf seems a bit off, maybe if it had a 3.2 VR6 like the R32, but a turbo 4 pot Golf should have a DSG in my opinion.

Bloody amazingly done video 👌👌👌
So good to see how far yous two have come! Been hear with yous from your first vid lol
Here*
As to the touchscreen everything in new cars, I think it's not only a bit less convenient and a bit harder to use than physical buttons and knobs. It think it's also potentially a significant danger factor on the roads, as whatever you want to do, you must take your eyes off the road for quite a lot of time to set anything up.
With the buttons and knobs you can set lot's of stuff in the car without looking at the dashboard, or only looking at it for a split second.
In my personal opinion this should be banned from cars due to safety considerations... I mean, with phones it's already hard to get new drivers to keep their eyes on the road, so now they can't even change the radio station without looking a couple seconds at a screen instead of the road.
What's the point of the anti collision auto breaking systems if you then just add more eye-candy and distraction tech for the drivers?
So, are P platers allowed to drive cars with touch screens? As per the rules, they aren't even allowed to have their phone within reach while driving, and they aren't allowed to use a GPS.....so how could they safely operate a vehicle that's controlled by a touch screen?
And before people start jumping up and down saying what P platers are going to be driving a Golf R, I'm talking about any new vehicle that has this type of control system.
That was an awesome review!
100% my favourite vid you have ever done !!
Moog looks like he was having fun with this one 😆
my issue with the lack of tactile buttons in the infotainment centre is that i live in a city that gets to -40 degrees celcius every other day for 5-6 months of the year, and i've seen the way these systems completely freeze up and become unresponsive during those super cold days. i don't want to be fighting with this stuff 50% of the year.
the amount of work you guys put into something we can watch for free is incredible!
Omg the cinematography was great ! Incredible!

The one thing that stood out for me was the beautiful orange peel paintwork.
Soft engine cover is for pedestrian safety to help minimise injury when impacting the hood and engine block
probably reduce alot of noise also from the engine
@@DennisRawet I was thinking increased refinement too! Sometime u see diesel car with thick insulation under the hood. This should have similar effect. If one wanted more noise they have the option to put the cover in the bin.
@@jondonnelly4831 yeah, diesels need it for us in Sweden, diesels barley keep warm during winter. At idle they go down to ~70⁰ without extra heater the cabin is barley warm 😂
Volvos even have their front close some curtains below certain temperatures just to keep the engine warm enough.
If you live in Australia you probably don't have these issues 😂
Heated seats, Eberspärcher/webasto are standard for our cars, you can't live without them once you had one.

love the car, had a 2 door mk7 R and loved it - the four door mk8 still looks like a poor compromise of function over form in my opinion - also noted the horrible orange peel in the paint, not quite sure what happened to decent factory paint jobs!
Garbage, soft paint is standard now sadly.
Attention other car reviewers, THIS is the sort of thing that is relateable and full of useful examples and honest opinions!
And a Shit car, from a company that lies...
Marty’s bit at the start was Matt Watson from the carwow channel. He even points out his bad the infotainment system is.
Those toes at 19:00 😂. You guys are the best! Congratulations on all your success! Thanks, from NJ, USA.
An exellent review... Thanks heaps for the honest opinion!
tactile controls are fine when you're parked...
when the car is moving, you want to hold some thing, and THEN WHILE HOLDING IT moving it to the percentage of setting you want , and ALL that without having to look at it
tactile control will take an input right away skipping the holding step which sucks if there's literally any grit on the road
And I still prefer the Mk 2 Golf.
And the mk3 + mk4
