  • Which is better, the American Gold Eagle or the American Gold Buffalo? Both have some pros and cons but doesn't one edge out the other? Thank you all for watching!

The cheapest .9999 i can find. Right now that's the Britannias. I am up to 23 of them now. LOL. I keep telling myself that I am going to buy an Eagle, then look at the cost difference and buy the Biritannias instead. The security features also help the Britannias. I think our mint is a bit arrogant, less features, more premium. They think that are the Tommy Hilfiger of bullion.

Fractional Buffalos will likely never be a thing due to the durability issue. Without the hardening/durability copper-silver alloy of an American Gold Eagle, the Buffalo seems like a pat of cold butter-one little ding and it’s got a dent or a scratch.

Be aware that the Eagle contains one full ounce of 24K gold. The coin weighs 1.09 ounces, however, because it *also* contains a copper-silver alloy that gives the coin much greater durability. That is why the coin is 22K. Too many folks are getting confused because some CZcams channels just don’t explain it, so the average person thinks that the Buffalo is somehow “better” which makes no sense. BOTH coins contain the SAME AMOUNT of pure gold.

@@byteme0000I think you’re explaining something that isn’t really what people are concerned with. Eagles are 22k gold, and are heavier than 1 Troy oz because of this. Buffalos are 24k ‘pure gold’ and weigh 1 Troy oz. I believe the reason that buffalo collectors, like myself, prefer the coin is because it is 1 Troy oz of 24k .9999 gold, nothing else. This is a major factor to some people. The color is what gold is supposed to be. I personally enjoy knowing I am holding ‘real’ gold, the same gold the streets of heaven were compared to.

@@TheGunNurse Well yes, that's exactly what I said. Btw, I'm completely with you if your argument is that you just simply prefer Buffalos because of their color, being an even one ounce, etc., but I still run into people who are simply not understanding that both Eagles and Buffalos contain the same amount of gold. As for myself, I like the look and feel of both coins and really don't prefer one over the other. I always try to maintain an equal number of both.

@@byteme0000 Those people are always out there in every hobby and subject. There will always be those ‘some’ people who are just persistently ignorant. The majority of people who debate this issue don’t even own either coin. If you’re up to spending $2k on a coin, you should at least understand what it is that you’re buying and why it’s worth the price to you. Pure gold, to me and many, will always be preferred over gold of higher weight, but lower purity. The debate is very similar to comparing 90% junk silver to 99.9% fine silver (not considering added numismatic value)

When neither are available I’ve bought fractional, which I really don’t care for (due to the premiums) as well as RCM bars if that’s all that’s available. I never specifically thought about how the reverse of the Gold Eagle doesn't match the obverse, but now that you point it out, it's true. I think the Gold Eagle reverse should be the same as the original Saint-Gaudens coin. They used both sides of the buffalo nickel for the gold buffalo, why not both sides for the gold eagle? If you understand the role that gold initially played throughout finance, you would have to humbly accept that everything that glitters isn't Gold. There's too much risk that comes with trading in 24 karat gold. I saw a video where someone cut out a half ounce of pure gold and replaced the 1/2 ounce gold with tungsten. A rare earth magnet didn't detect it as a fake and it almost passed as a legit gold coin on the X-ray machine. @@wyattchiordi5132 The United States Mint decided for 2021 to redesign the Obverse of the Type 2 American Gold Eagle coins to have it retrospectively resemble the original design by August Saint-Gaudens from 1907 which at that time had only 46 states in the union. That 46th state was Oklahoma which was admitted to the Union on November 6, 1907. Thereafter New Mexico became the 47th state on January 6, 1912, Arizona became the 48th state on February 14, 1912, Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, and Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959. Personally I would have preferred that all 50 stars remain on the coin just as there are currently 50 stars on the flag of the U.S.A.

@@CampbellsCoins In 2009, the United States Mint Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold $20 Coins were made to resemble the original 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens design. However on the Obverse, 4 stars were added to the original 46 stars to give it a total of 50 stars for that year 2009.

Great video! Correction, AGE is only 1 9's fine. 91.62% gold vs. the Buffalo is 4 9's fine at 99.99% gold. The Canadian Maple leaf was 3 9's fine at 99.9 and the new one is 4 9's fine at 99.99. They even came out with 5 9's 99.999% pure gold. Get it?

Finally got drawn into my first Buffalo purchase, because the dealer was offering it for slightly less, and I guess I wanted to see a 24kt Gold coin up close and personal. Spot is quite lower presently, and had a couple hundred CC dollars to offset the premium. It is quite stunning up close, but more so for the color, rather than the design. Ripping off the old nickel design is hardly unique, which this coin deserves. Not sure if I would buy any more (over the Gold Eagle), unless it proved to be a cheaper version of stacking Gold.

It's my biggest problem with them as well. Perth does gold swans and kangaroos with changing designs annually, fractional gold bars, silver kookaburras koalas and wedge tailed eagles. Royal Mint does the Royal Arms, Sovereign, Britannia, Beast series. Canada usually has some variety outside of just Maples. Why can't the US Mint do interesting annual bullion series of endemic American wildlife?

There is a big price difference between the buffalo and the eagle in Europe. Both are more expensive than any other bullion, but the buffalo is always €80-100 more expensive than the eagle. I guess I’ll just buy one if I ever visit the states again.

Why do you think the US mint still keeps the gold eagle at 22K? Since one can't make the circulation & wear argument, is it just tradition? Or maybe their fear of losing market share? I believe if they would switch the AGE to .9999 they would gain an even greater demand.
