Suzuki Swift Sport has Grown Up - 2018 Car Review

  • Suzuki's sixth generation Swift supermini has been improved. But not beyond recognition. Jonathan Crouch reports.
With the sixth generation version of their Swift supermini, Suzuki have stayed true to the design principles that have long served them in the small car sector, low running costs, high quality and a spacious cabin being the highlights. The car is now lighter and more spacious, plus there's the option of mild hybrid technology.
Buying a car from a budget brand isn't usually something anyone does by choice. But the cost savings over more familiar options are often hard to ignore, especially when it comes to superminis. So what if you could pay budget brand prices, yet get mainstream quality? That's exactly the proposition this little Suzuki Swift has always aimed to serve up. Previous Swift models have certainly been convincing in this way, more than a million of them having been sold in Europe since 2005, with 127,000 of those in the UK.

Pretty incredible how this car can weigh under 1000kg, its lighter than my 2008 Swift by some margin and that has much less equipment, quite amazing, makes you wonder why people accept cars 300kg heaver. I test drive one of these for 24 hours. They are unbelievably fun to drive. I would have bought one if it wasn't for those horribly narrow seats. As an average sized Australian, my legs sat more on the bolsters than between them, and the side bolsters dug into my back. Those seats were definitely designed for small Japanese people without giving much thought to anyone of even moderate size. I also found my size 13 foot would hit the footrest when using the clutch. I found myself having to adjust how I placed my foot on the clutch pedal. I would have also preferred a digital speed readout in between the dials instead of useless graphical readouts of boost/torque, acceleration/braking, etc. The Australian version has a speedometer which goes from 0-260 so the lines are crammed so close together its hard to easily read your speed at a glance. Finally, I get that it's a small car, but a centre console armrest would have been appreciated. You don't notice it at first but when cruising for any length of time, not being able to rest your arm anywhere gets annoying. Those gripes aside, this is an insanely fun car. I could live without the digital speedo and armrest. I hope in future models they make the seats more comfortable and I'll buy one in a heartbeat!

Actually i have been sitting in a few hot hatches in search for the perfect one for my wife, my daughter and for myself and i finally found the right car with this little Pocket Rocket. Neither of the Clio RS or Fiesta ST could even barely offer that much head- and legroom in the front, nor in the back of the car. Then again, try to equip any, i mean ANY other car out there with all those features and quirks the Swift Sport comes equipped with as standard... and then check the pricetags again.
For me there is - in the 5-door-mini-segment - no other car right now that would be even close to the Swift in terms of performance, fun, space, economics and luxury/safety features combined for that little money spent. Some dealers already sell this car brand new for under 17k Euros in Germany.

Cars from Japan naturally more expensive due to much higher cost of living there, exchange rate, shipping, potential import costs.
The amount of bespoke engineering in the Swift Sport over the standard models is extensive. This should be taken into consideration when making comparisons because you may not be getting your money's worth elsewhere.

You did not mention the 6 speed torque converter auto model with paddle shifters and automatic engine braking, such as I have in Australia. The auto gearbox will take over if it feels that the engine is being over revved, or the change would be dangerous for the transmission or engine. All specifications such as acceleration and fuel consumption are identical with the manual. The auto transmission does not rob the engine of any power at all. Changes are very fast, with most changes taking place at 2,500 RPM. When driving in automatic mode, a change of gear via paddle will revert to automatic after 60 seconds. If you want to hold that gear, then pull back the gear selector one notch, and it will be maintained. We have five year warranty if all the capped price services are conducted for the first 3 years.

5 door makes the chassis stiffer due to the B-pillar. Same applies for all hatchbacks. Even the VW Golf mk2 had the top model G60 synchro made in five door only due to this very reason, the 3 doors chassis couldn’t handle the power. Car makers know what they’re doing. Also the best 80s hatches has torsion bar suspension - stiffer and ability to slide made them fun - more so than today’s multilink suspension at the back which is mainly to make the back end more stable.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply That you do, and I love your reviews (best on CZcams), that's why I was so disappointed to hear such a similar script.

Fiesta, when equipped, goes way up in price and psychologically for someone 3 cylinder in a no go :-) Anyway both great small cars.

Superb review. I prefer to watch car reviews like this with intelligent, well spoken presenters. Too many car videos on CZcams where the presenter is using it to promote themselves instead of the product, its so obvious with a lot of them. All tan and white teeth. Typical examples are rich kids with daddys money, posting videos such as "I just bought a new BMW M3" etc with their equally arrogant mates standing round in designer shirts, while they strut around the car and play up to the camera. Those sort of videos are for your reality show audience. People with low attention spans that think everything is 'cool'.
One thing, he is right about what he says about warranties. If car companies had faith in their cars, then perhaps they should think about minimum 5 year warranties. Maybe it will tempt people to keep their cars longer, and help the planet by saving on raw materials by not having to make as many new cars. Some will say that would harm the car industry, jobs would be lost etc, but think of it this way. Would you prefer a cure for cancer, or would you prefer to keep people in jobs that make the cancer drugs, or work in research ? Really, you all need to think about that.

This car is made in Japan Suzuki product. Not to be confused with the Indian Maruti Suzuki Swift!

    • @akashsharma1134

In India, Maruti ruins the Suzuki brand. They make the car so cheap, underpowered and unsafe that it's never good enough for people who are even a little knowledgeable about cars. Only first time car buyers go for Suzuki's here. These cool and capable cars like Swift Sport are not offered here.

I was gunna save my cash for one these and my dad said he would put £2000 towards it. But i saw a image somewhere may have been on youtube were a motorcycle crashed into it and the swift was written off but the motorcycle only needed new folks. If you crash at 60-70 mph i guarantee you will become part of the crumple zone. Put 100 -120k miles on it and will be fked. I realy gone off suzuki now i used to like them and had many of them but im not wasting money on them anymore. 😦
