      Every culture changes. Without change things stagnate and die. MANY IN THE Philippines suffer extreme poverty. That surely needs to change. A man is having a home built there. The workers have no safety equipment, building in flip flops. MANY there are starving, selling garbage to get money for food. MANY things do need to change there.

    Roger has a good head on his shoulder. Some expats I've seen here in youtube complains a lot. He's spot on when he said " you're not here to change everything". Even I, a filipina, stopped complaining about my country. it's not perfect, but there are many great things here. just be friendly with neighbors, share snacks to them. Do good and you'll accept more good things. Another thing that I like about here is that you can strike up a conversation with strangers. Most filipinos are friendly.

      @Harry Eisermann, never say that! do you mean the Filipinos are only friendly because they can get something from you? You’re totally wrong 👎. In our tradition, if you invite them to eat or out, certainly they expect you to pay regardless how many times you invite them. You must tell frankly to let them pay their own bill before going to any restaurant. So they’ll not join you if they have no money to spend. I am a Filipino working abroad and I never let my friends pay because I know that I am earning more than them. Hence, I cannot accept to let them spend their few Pesos. If you don’t like to spend for your newly found Filipino friends, never invite them and that would be fine. Surely, they will never changed and still will protect and treat you like a family member, not just an ordinary friend. However, if they found your character bad, they’ll dump you to deep shit.

      @Harry Eisermann, hey 👴 old man! What are you talking about again. Can you rewrite your English? Sorry, it’s hard to understand your statements. I have been following you on CZcams and you never stop saying against the Philippines and even insulting us.
      What are you talking about the food problem in the Philippines. Filipinos could live in a simple life with a smile in our face as we are very happy within our means. And what about the price of the goodies in the supermarkets and malls? I am always in Europe and Germany (your country of origin) was one of the 6 countries I visited last January 2020. The prices are above ceiling compared to Philippines. This is the reason why you’re staying in the Philippines or Indonesia, simply because these places where your pension could only meet your leisures in life... your monthly pension would not be enough if you’ll spend it in your home country. I bet this is 100% correct. You better shut up 🤐 old man. Just enjoy the fruits you have in the Philippines. If you still gonna complain, pack your things and go home!

    • @NDizon
      @NDizon Před 3 lety +5

      @olifous abelo, there’s something wrong with this old man a.k.a. Harry Eisermann. I’ve been following his comments from different posts and he’ll never say good things about the Philippines. Most of his comments are really below the belt. This is the reason why I always answer him back. Ironically, he dislikes Philippines but he keeps oncoming back to our country. Why? this is where he could enjoy much and his monthly pension has a higher value, times P50 to P60, more than enough for him to enjoy. If he gonna spend his money in his home country, probably just enough to eat... no leisures like he does in the Philippines.

    • @NDizon
      @NDizon Před 3 lety +6

      @John Charville, yes Harry Eisermann is always in the Philippines. He claims having condo unit in Las Pinas. However, he will NEVER stop saying bad about Philippines even this is the only place including Indonesia where he could only enjoy much. There’s something wrong with this man.

    Great interview Mr.Thornton! And I love your own personal story and the success and happiness you have found here!
    I also came to The Philippines with the attitude, "I am not coming here to tell Filipinos how to run their country, or to look down on them, or complain. I came here to learn their language(s), enjoy their culture, and be among the people."
    I have encountered too many "Kanos" who live here in apparent misery, always criticizing everything about the Philippines, the people, and their way of life. I tell them they should move back to wherever they came from, where everything must be absolutely perfect in their eyes!! They then either shut up or make every excuse possible for staying! Most are in The Philippines bcuz in the U.S. they have absolutely NO CHANCE to spend wonderful times next to 18 or 20 year young lady! Many Kanos say the men here are stupid, but I disagree 100%! School is not free here as in the U.S., so only the lucky can get a high school diploma. I have met young men aged 13 to 16 that know how to survive on their own, they know how to make furniture, and build a house, and work on a car even though they don't know how to drive one, or fix a motorbike, vulcanize a flat tire, sing fairly well, are polite and respectful, and the list goes on... It's not their fault that no one ever taught them how to do math, or speak good English! My fiancee is absolutely one of the best people and best women I have ever met. She is 37 and I am 62. In the U.S. I could have never had a 37 year old girlfriend, let alone wife! God Bless Filipinos, and The Philippines!!! It is not perfect, and neither is the U.S.! I feel freer and happier in the Philippines than in the U.S.!

    I'm am a naturalised Swedish citizen having lived 50 years in Sweden, I have also lived in Ph for 6 years and have still many friends there so I travel there to visit sometimes. Having lived in Ph and travelled extensively there, I don't think I would live there on a permanent basis maybe for the winter months only, can be rewarding to have the best of both worlds.

    I` agree with Roger about the climate and it`s cold and unstable weather in Sweden. I lived in the Philippines for 10 years but finally, I decided to move to Costa del sol in Spain, and I never regret it. Here is a perfect climate too and the sun is always shining and the biggest surprise is the expenses. I live cheaper here with my wife and two kids than I did in the Philippines. I believe the main reason why people settle down in the Philippines is the language and people are nice all over and of course all the pretty girls. Minus is the health system and it`s crowded most places, terrible roads also. The average age is low also for foreigners because of an unhealthy lifestyle. Anyway, it`s funny in the Philippines but I will go there for vacation only.

      @Harry Eisermann I totally agree with you. Sometime its a The mindset that had been a part of The peoples beliefs and self value. I had actually helped children back there sponsored their education. From lower grade to college. Few of them was nursing. Unfortubately it did not went well. So I stopped sponsoring since then. Most of them started a family so early and did not finish education and so what they can give to their children? Same same. Inhereted poverty. Because they prefer Quick money and and Quick results.somehow your comment is pretty correct and straight forward. Reagrds and keep safe👍

I am against paper and I am one who pushed to stop receiving Afton Bladet and most of Swedish Publication at Embassy Of Sweden in Amman. Good interview with Roger, an educated European man of the world who has done his research based on experience. Easy to listen to. I met many such travellers during my twenty years travelling around the entire world and the Philippines stands out in so many ways on the positive side. Of course not everything but enough to consider either moving there or living there and finding a genuine relationship with a filipina which with several travels to the Philippines and travelling to many different places in that country I was very fortunate to have found a very lovely and special lady who is now my wife and living happily with me in Adelaide Australia (where in Aug 2020 we still have not needed to wear a mask). AND I am thirty years older than her AND I cannot give her children, due to a vasectomy after my son was born with a previous Mexican wife. I guess being 69 and having travelled and 'been out there' has given me a sense of contentedness that rubs off. My wife has security here and a lovely filipina community to enjoy being with her culture and language and I can join in whenever I want to. In 2005/6 a friend from Adelaide decided to retire in Dumaguete and still lives there. As a result I came many times to Dumaguete and Valencia and the Hot Springs etc and I would love to have a house in Valencia as one of the best places to live in the Philippines for sure. But my friend is now stuck in Dumaguete and stranded with flights cancelled yet again. I just subscribed to your channel and please do the same for me Train Lord. I have several interesting videos showing the beauty of the Philippines including Dumaguete and Valencia and the Hot Springs etc and the rest of the Philippines. Please enjoy to all the filopinos in lockdown reading this. Cheers again.
