    I have never heard the ollie explained in this way. I recently viewed a slow-mo on a trick tip and something clicked as I observed how the skateboard just kinda hung vertically in the air while the rider's front foot slid vertically up the tape gaining a new foot position before the board leveled out. immediately I started scouring more ollie vids to observe this again and your video has confirmed it with a great explanation. I've been struggling to get my Ollies normal as they just go up then slam down before leveling out. but I think it's because I've been mentally telling myself to roll my ankle and slide it up the grip tape at a more 45 degree angle. most tutorials heavily emphasize training this sliding motion of the front foot while stationary to build muscle memory but as you pointed out it's closer to sliding it almost 80 degrees . I think it's possible I've been training the wrong muscle memory and sliding forward/horizontally too early instead of allowing the board to pop into the air while sliding upwards/vertically. thanks so much for making this video. I hope to apply your insights on my next session.

      Thank you for making this tutorial. Can you please make a special tutorial on Ollie while rolling/moving? Btw, I'm still struggling in learning Ollie stationary. Inconsistent, sometimes small Ollie, rocket, ghost, and rarely perfect Ollie. I'm also trying to Ollie while rolling, but when I pop the tail, my body often falls backwards to the opposite direction of the board movement. I feel the difficulty in keeping balance on the board when popping the tail. Would be grateful if you can help me on the rolling Ollie. I've seen many Ollie tutorials on CZcams, but not much information on rolling Ollie. Only a glimpse information after much proportion tutorial on stationary Ollie. Again, thanks for making skate tutorials which really help a beginner like me.

    • @SkateSage
      @SkateSage  Před 3 lety +3

      bagus widodo I plan on making another Ollie tutorial covering some of the smaller details like this, since I’ve thought of some of them myself

    •  Před 3 lety +3

      This is a great ollie tutorial! One thing very few tutorials talk about is the "positioning" and movement of the upper body and arms. When you look at someone doing an ollie you see that the upper body and arms move in a quite complicated way, so it would great if you could talk about this. Is it even something you think of or does it happen automatically?
      Some tutorials mention that you should keep your shoulders "squared" or in line with the board, but when you look at people doing ollies you often see that the shoulders are not in line with the board, but rather a bit rotated so that the front shoulder is on the heelside and the back shoulder is on the toeside.
      Another thing which confuses me is the sliding of the front foot. Do you actually slide the front foot or does it look like the foot is sliding since you're pushing your front knee forward (and upward)?
      I've been struggling with the ollie for three(!) years now and the thing I find hardest is the front foot / front knee motion. I just can't make my front foot push / kick forward at the highest point of the jump.

    • @SkateSage
      @SkateSage  Před 3 lety +3

      Henrik Bergström I would say that there isn’t anything particularly special about the way you should move your arms. Just move them as you would if you were jumping - everyone moves their arms differently, so I wouldn’t say it’s that important as long as you can move them in a way that helps you jump. As for the shoulders, I think that when giving instructions, we tend to advise others to do it the way it feels like we’re doing it. The way it *feels* isn’t always the way it ends up looking. Nevertheless, when I ollie, I try to keep my shoulders parallel with the board; it feels like I’m keeping them that way too, even if it ends up looking different in practice. It helps to have these somatic markers, so I would say still try and think about it as if you’re keeping parallel. It also might be explained in that if no effort were put forth to keep the shoulders parallel, they’d rotate way too much and ruin the Ollie, so thinking about keeping them parallel keeps them *mostly* parallel, which is necessary

    After almost 4 years of trying to ollie from the beginning, I could never do it. I thought it was my wheels, so I changed them. Then my trucks, then my board size itself, then my shoes. Then I finally realized it was the jump. No tutorial ever really specified when to kick during the jump and when I heard something along the lines of "you don't kick until you're in the air so the board is going up lightly". I was so excited when I finally got it. I could tell from the click. I still need to work on my sliding of the foot up but damn it feels amazing. Thankyou bro.

    Been trying to learn the Ollie as a little challenge for myself as an adult without any skating experience.
    Day 1: Watched several tutorials. This is the best. (2h)
    Day 2: Bought a board and did balancing exercises inside - fell off, destroyed a table. :-D (1h30min)
    Day 3: Mimiced the jumping movement ("seesaw motion") dry, without and with board. (1h30min, important.)
    Day 4: Tried to jump with the board outside in stationary; no actual Ollie but also only one minor fall (1h)
    Day 5: Landed my first cleanish Ollie (frist with Skatetrainers, then without) in stationary, no falling (45min)
    Tomorrow: Consolidation in stationary.
    The day after tomorrow: Ollie while rolling. :-)

    I didn’t have these videos to show the process and had a hard time learning how to drag my front foot to level the board when I was younger . I don’t know why but I could jump pop the board but couldn’t slid my front foot forward very far so my ollies where not very high . Then one day I finally ollied higher than I ever had while going down a hill and landed on my ankle because I over bent my ankle and didn’t straighten it out before landing . I broke it and was devastated. I was so discouraged and ashamed I almost stopped skating but after recovering kept trying and I eventually learned . I was like 7 at the time now I’m 34 still skating and love your tutorial because it helps my son learn when he doesn’t want to listen to dad tell him how to skate haha . Thank u, this video got me my first solid ollie, higher than a curb. It's my 2nd week skateboarding and I can't thank u enough. All I gotta do now is not slam my front foot so hard, and ollie high consistently.

    Thank you so much for this video. Best explanation by far. Just popped the fattest ollie in my living room. Can't wait to try more at the part tomorrow

    The slo mo over and over and over is incredibly helpful. One thing I picked up from the video that no one seems to mention is that you don't pick up the front foot straight up. The knee goes up but the front foot also goes back towards the rear leg to give the board space.

    One of the best explanations about the mechanics behind the ollie! The back foot flick after the jump is the best clue I have heard. Thank you

    I got my first actual ollie because of this video bro. I’ve quit skating 2 times because I could never get the ollie down. Thank you for making this 100% the best ollie tutorial out there.

    yes! so much differently explained, in a good way! I was somehow jumping directly of the pop, and you mention so much the back leg work which so few trainers mention... there s a lot to say but I m outside practicing, I could see an improvment! thank you
    ps - i was so tired of the pop slide jump thing...:)
