- This is the first in a long series of Skateology entries. Please note the name change from "Slow Motion Trickipedia" to Skateology. Today's entry is one of the most basic skateboarding tricks, the humble ollie. All of these shots are of me except at 0:48 it's Matt Hartzel and the last one is Brian Martin.
All these clips were filmed at 1,000 frames per second and 1280x720 resolution with a Redlake N3 high speed camera.
Thanks to Running Against the Knife for the music. This song is called Face Down. www.myspace.com...
I got a great tip for beginners! Ive started properly skating 12 hours ago,, and try to get my ollie technique good first, i was told to pop, jump, and slide all at the same time, been practicing this for 12 hours and havent had much improvement so i decided to break it down slightly.
what i did was focused
on the pop and the jump and left out the slide, i popped hard and jump high and to my great surprise did my biggest ollie ever without any (minimal) slide , anybody else having trouble try this first , get your pop and jump reall good then start adding in the slide to add even more height and to balance the board
EDIT: another good tip is bring your knees up to your chest, cos the board wont your lift feet, you have to lift the board, i was jumping as high as a I could but i wasnt bending my knees, you upper body doesnt go much higher when bring up our knees so that why we forget to do it, when you first start making sure you bring up knees it might feel unnatural , that just means right
,, hope i can help somebody
my foot wont slide i pop jump and bend my ankle i try to slide it but it doesnt work !is it my griptape my shoes or my ankles ?
same thing was happening to me, i discovered it was because i wasnt bringin my knees up after i jump, the board wont allow you to slide you foot if you full weight is stopping it,, itll feel weird at first but when jump bring you knees up as high as possible, i was worried that i couldnt physically jump high enough to ollie any higher but it turned out that this was my problem,,my legs stayed fairly straight when i jumped
If you practice popping and jumping, high and tucking in knees, first and leave the sliding till later youll get the hang of it much faster, remember the slide is the least important part of the ollie .
one last bit of advice is that the the pop ,jump and slide are not meant to be done all at the same time, bends your knees a little then jump , then before your feet leave the board, pop and bring your knees up, then when the board reaches its max height slide your foot forward, it should feel fluid and weightless.
8lorko8 thank you
8lorko8 your tip helped me allot ive been practising today and it worked good but the only thing now is when i do it my board turns 90 degrees did this happened to you too ?ps: can i follow you so if i had a problem i could ask help but i dont mind if you dont like to be bothered
Fahd Lachhab Hey Fahd, if your board is turning it can mean a few things:
- Your shoulders, which are the most important things when it comes to frontside and backside 180, are probably the reason you're turning. Try to keep them parallel to the board itself, don't rotate them.
- Your feet might not be centered on the tail, or behind the bolts. Make sure your toes are completely centered on the board.
If not, ask any skater, these were just from my experience, i had the same problem.
Good Luck :D
Alright, skateboarding is officially black magic.
That's funny because black magic used to be a skateboarding grip tape company
Chinese Nollie looks even more magical IMHO : czcams.com/video/Ar5KfJRNKBk/video.html
Black majik is hexes and curses
Ok, That was fun but its just about the physics, When u hit someting with a little bend up really hard it will jump if u jump with it guiding your legs forward up then bend your knees, Its same as sk8
and this is the one of the easiest, if not the easiest, truck :)
I learned more about ollies with this video than the other hundred tutorial videos I watched on how to do an ollie.
This nigga capping
@@jeweerly2319 straight up lmao
Who else is here trying to learn ollies!?
I, sorry
me. can't get the board entirely up it seems.
Me. Have you figured how to do it Redwood fingerboards ?
I'll let you know when I get it solid
Which will probably be in 60 years
0:24 Make sure to have your hands in that exact position. It really helps with the height.
Omg i just realised that hahahahhaha

That's style though it's good style too
2:15 ninja ollie
Well shit. I see what I've been doing wrong all these months. Finally able to ollie over two decks stacked. I was trying to kick the board down and after the board was almost vertical, I started my slide. Starting the slide as I popped the tail was a great improvement and I was able to ollie correctly within the first few tries after seeing the video.
Kyle yo I just got over 2 boards stacked
This is the best how to ollie video for me
the last ollie was.....there's no words to explain how it's awesome!!!
Of all of the tutorials I've seen on how to ollie, this is by far the best one, it definately helped me the most.
Learned how to do it with the board stationary I tried it moving and this is a whole nother beast
Eventhough im seeing it in slowmo i still dont see how the board is supposed to fly so high in the air
You have to get really good at jumping, when you first start it'll be physically impossible to get the board that high, you need to develop your muscles and perfect the jump in order to get full height.
+Cancer Cancer If you pop the board hard enough it will pop up up to a couple feet. But you have to jump even higher otherwise the board will hit your feet and not reach maximum potential.
Then you use your feet to level off the board bringing the back of the board upwards.
+Spartn M It's all basically at the same time. Picture a lightning bolt. It definitely travels but it happens so fast it looks like the whole lightning bolt appears at once. When you do an ollie you have to do all the steps like a lightning bolt: one after the other but quick enough that it looks simultaneous.
So yes, you have to be in the motion of jumping AS you lift the board up. Try doing hippie jumps for a bit, and then when you try to ollie do a hippie jump but kick the tale against the ground hard the moment you'd leave the board. Once you figure out the timing ollie's should seem so much simpler to you.
Cancer Cancer it's the pop
Physics dawg
You could say it's skateolliegy
+1
dad joke of the year
👏
Because watching the clip slow mo you can analyse the steps for your self, so you can understand it much better, rather than somebody just telling you the steps :)
Love these vids, would be cool to see all the clips in real time at the end tho! Keep up the good work man
dude thx! im 17 and i start skateboarding but here in swiss all laught about me they said "what? you are 17 but you cant do any skatetricks?" i was in america, there were alle so good to me :) show me a few things, but here in swiss all are for themself :/ thx i really learn from your videos cuz none will show me...
sry for my english im still learning it
greetings
Hey man your probs not on this account but how does it feel being 24 and are you from Switzerland because I love skiing in Switzerland
Dude! I made my first ollie 5 minutres ago! I'm so proud of it! :D
Why am I here in 2022. Anyway good job
Wow, 10 years? this video is too ahead of its time.
The way I have come to learn them, is to pop hard and jump at the same time so you lose contact with board under your back foot and the board is trying to become vertical and then use the front foot to balance. They key is when you to do it hard to jump so that you lose contact with it, as seen in the video. Just my two cents
Got this trick in a day. About 1 year ago. Then kickflips. And then I played my first game of S.K.A.T.E., (and won) then landed a: Boneless, boneless 180, boneless fingerflip, primo double varial flip, kickflip sex change, half cab, half cab flip, no comply flip, and a no comply double flip. Within the course of 2 weeks, just from that game of SKATE. I'm so glad I didn't give up on skating, it was worth it. Nothing beats skateboarding, it's so fun. Skateboarding, anime, and video games are essentially my life now. I still regret nothing.
nice joke lol
Ayra Khan lolzies.
x17Chimera dude thats exactly how i got trough the trick except i skipped the ollie and started up with a kickflip which i did first try, unfortunately i jumped a little bit too hogh and crashed my head into a Street lantern
Cool bro! I just started skating six months ago. After I watched this video I picked up my skateboard for the first time, it took me thirty minutes to Ollie. After that, I landed pop shuvits, bs & fs 180s, and heelflips all within an hour. I swear though, I thought I'd never learn kick flips, they took me two hours. The next day, I went to El Toro and landing my first dolphin flip sex change on my first attempt! A little after that, I made a sponsor me tape and got sponsored! Over the next few months I did some stuff at the berrics and filmed some video parts, unfortunately all that stuff is lost now :( I'm thinking of retiring from skating now though because it's getting a little boring now. Maybe I should try BMX now.
Chris B Ha-ha. "Bro, I used to skate, I knew how to tre flip, and all that crazy shit. But I lost it all man." Hahahaha LMAO
This is the best ollie tutorial without saying a word
put speed on 0.25
We’re gonna be here a while.
I spent my whole lockdown at 0.25x
This is SO AWESOME!!!!! I keep having to imagine an obstacle!
By FAR the BEST STYLE ollie i have seen!!!!!!! EXCELLENT
This video helps and always motivate me to train my ollies.
Thanks for your effort, i bet you wont realize how this video help me and tons of beginner skaters out there.
Slow motion always looks so rough on the body lol
Okay so:
1. Bend knees
2. Jump
3. Pop board
4. Drag front foot forward
5. Drag back foot UP
6. Slowly put down front foot, as if a wave motion
7. Land
The back foot is totally underrated. Love the back foot work in shot #3.
Watch this for 10 hours, get your pushing really down trugh use your board for cruising everyday, Watch the "How to Ollie" Videos of Braille Skateboarding, practice it step by step for at least a half an hour daily and commit. Then do ollies while riding and then train with obsticles and then with ankle weigths until your ollie is the best under the locals.
I should commit more too, but my damn social anixety is in the way.
It would be interesting if you can train skate tricks using your imagination. Or techniques like lucid dreaming. That could really work and would support your muscle memory in a psychical way.
Mattbrhew Honestly I feel like I’ve learned things using imagination. Actually I had a dream I did an Ollie while riding and when I woke up I had this new technique which I tried and it worked it’s weird
Braille skateboarding video sucks. I recommend VLSkate. Never go to Braille.
This learns faster for me than someone who just say the steps.
This is sick as hell man... can't wait to see the more advanced tricks e.g. 360 flips, Hardflips
screw trick tips, slow-motion is all I need!
The best video on youtube
That last one was sick!
The video looks like this straight out of the camera. I use editing software to cut the clips together and add music. On my newer videos I speed up some parts of each trick and only show the most interesting parts in super slow motion.
My dream is to land one of those ollies. Man, they look so good
You sir, this is a pretty solid ollie
Man am I like the only fucking Goofy stanced dude in the World?
No I am too
+thesantiso i cant do regular and wright with my left lmao.
so no you're not alone
Tech
I write with my left hand, though I do every fucking thing else with my right parts (football playing, shooting, etc.) and I am goofy
i just find it weird how i write with my left but im goofy. i literally cant do regular
Tech
then goofy is for right-handed people? Why would most people be right-handed, and then most skateboarders are left-footed or "Regular" stanced? O.o
skateboarding is basically like, the board has it's own mind, you just control where it goes with your feet.
watching this in double speed is awesome lol, the music gets fawwwwwnkayyy
Omg the last one.. stylish!!
Thanks to you man, I learned how to Ollie, now only standing though, but that's only now.
2:16 That is freaking impressive. Brilliant idea by the way. One of the best ways to understand a trick is to watch it done properly and break it down. Haha at 1000 Frames per second you can see the little tidbits you would otherwise miss. I look forward to seeing what other trickipedia videos you post.
That is so beautiful
Thanks! Used this for my paediatric physiotherapy course.
the best tutorial i have ever seen... i guess i will be able to do Ollie soon!
Perfect soundtrack for riding downtown
Thanks for this, and awesome music!
the way they tweak it is insane, but it’s also something i can do (somewhat). on the other hand, the way they tweak and then perfectly place their weight to land completely level is something that i WISH i could do
Im trying to re-learn ollie hopefully I'll get it back soon.
congratulations dude, next step flip ! Good luck we're with you
This looks so easy yet so freakin hard!
Ok my predicament is that I can never get the back wheels off the ground and I think its either bc I only slide my front foot a bit past the hardware or bc I start sliding my foot too early. Work your magic gimme tips!
I had not been able to do Ollies my whole life and I was embarrassed by it. I also could not get my back wheels of the ground. I got a set of skatertrainers and was able to nail the mechanics of the Ollie that same day. I used them for a week and took them off. I then worked on stationary Ollies until I nailed that down. Finally I moved to moving ollies. One thing I found is that you need to have your front foot on its side dragging forward before you do the pop of the tail. Also, the pop is not done as your weight comes down on the board. That will keep the tail from rising. Instead, the pop needs to happen after moving upward from the crouch so that your weight is off the tail as you pop it. People knock the skatertrainers by saying you need to learn to Ollie when moving. But if you have been unable to do that for years, the trainers will give you a boost of confidence that it can be done, so don’t give up. I recommend you try those because you cannot get the appropriate tail pop on grass or carpet. Also set your phone up at board height to record your attempts and review what you have done.
This help me do a Ollie bc other videos I couldn't see t they do it with there feets
biggest thing for me learning stationary ollies was bringing up my back foot, all though you should keep it on the board it is good to start like that.
from what I can see the slide of the foot is something that affects the jump hight,
Personally, I think that all of you are "ollieing" off the ground your just not very high up,
You just need to commit and go for it. you don't even need to land on the board,
just see how high you can get it... Originally I thought that you needed to "pop" harder
and the slide was just to help and to level the board but when you slow the first shot down
by 0.25, you can see that the slide is the main thing about the jump. it's that
pop that starts the whole thing with a bend and a turn in the board that allows you to
pull upwards. skateboarding is hard. when you are practicing try to practice in the
afternoon one day and in the morning the next. this will optimize your next ollie's timing
another thing is positive enforcement of you have someone watching you and there good
at cheering you on, your brain naturally likes skateboarding and ollieing even more... that
and they can see what is happening under the board. bonus point of you dream about
skateboarding the night late which means your brain is assessing what happened and
trying to help you. sorry for the bad grammar and misspelling.
I LOVE SKATEOLOGY BECAUSE YOU CAN STUDY SKATEBOARDING TRICKS
@cl3arviSion
He filmed it on a Redlake N3 high speed camera, check the description
ThanX,my Ollie is through your video-GOLD-thank you very much.
Yo can someone helps me? When I pop my board and drag my foot up the tail just stays on the ground every time, I've never gotten it off the ground. Why won't it come up of the ground? Help is appreciated :)
beautiful
awesome work man doing this video really helped me keep up the good work
Thanks for this vid!
@silversk8erz The kickflip entry is coming up. I need to film some more kickflips first.
this is so nice...
@Skapo I won it in a video contest. One of the other videos on my channel is my winning entry to that contest. It's called "IDT slow motion video competition: skateboarding"
Finally realised what went wrong in my ollies, I had them consistent but always messed up my footing when landing and couldn't get the board leveled consistently.
By footing, I meant landing so far front up my board I slam my nose down and fall forwards.
Thanks for the slo-mo!
This was really helpful
im still learning an ollie for almost a year by now. sadlife.
I think learning tricks is easier when you see them in slow motion, rather than watching tutorials.
this s awesome i learn more with slo mo thanks
Thanks dude, I never understood what people meant when they're like "you have to jump as well", like obviously I'm gonna have to lift my weight but yeah, this made a whole lot of sense and it's way easier now, I think I was kinda confused cause when you see videos it doesn't really look like they've lifted their back foot, yeah anyway thanks dude :)
I think what ive been getting wrong is not getting the tail down hard enough. thanks this really helps
no, I refer to the 180 backside kicturn. as to the ollie, I haven't learned it yet, when I practice it without rolling my rear knee starts aching from the practice.
Awesome man
STILL don't get it. Seems like magic. The skate should not jump up, but it does. Magically.
I KNOW YOUR FEEL BRO
Its not magically flying :P As far as I know (super beginner) the pop is what lifts the board off the ground. It like when you go to pick your board up and you pop the tail and catch the board. If you jump and do that the boar will lift. Then you have to level it out, which is why you drag your foot. This may be wrong, again I'm a beginner :D
jordieman I don't think that's it, because... when you pick up your board it flies RIGHT AT YOU, not up. My question is why when you're on the board and kick it, it flies straight up.
Clarensee Maybe not then....thats what's been workin for me though. Maybe ask around?
jordieman Haha, I've tried asking, no luck so far. I will keep on. =)
This is a GREAT idea. Please keep em coming :)
biggest mistake but people learning: you gotta snap the tail right when you almost finish extending your legs, not when your still crouched
The last ninja IS insane
Hm. There's a slight drag before the pop. Sometimes my ollies feel really good. Like if I bone it properly I can get a little over a foot, but other times they don't feel as good and I only get about 6 inches.
This is a great video! So I notice every other ollie video says your back foot should "never" touch the ground, but it looks like here he does "pinch" the board for a second as he is taking off... soo is it a matter of preference then?
this just got on my recommended bro
and i just realized the vid was made like 10-11 years ago
skating IS an art
Did my first ollie today woooooo
huge ollie man=D i liked the last one
the tricky part is when you ollie your backfoot must leave the tail behind you then up. once that goes down, it's all up to how smooth your front foot slides up to level the board. yes, you will have to jump when you move - the scary part is not trusting yourself and not sliding your front foot at all, doing this will most assuredly make it very likely you get the splits.
Um 2019?
I don’t know why I’m here. I can Ollie but here’s a few tips for those who don’t know how to yet. But first a little story time. I got into skating last year and I’d use my brother’s board to ride around. 6 months ago I got my own board and I just tried to get used to riding first and then go to ollie. I’ve been riding and riding and went to try n Ollie. It took me so long because I never committed or out any effort so that time didn’t count. Then in a week of actually committing I was so close and I got the form in a day. I practiced and practiced. In half a week I finally landed and it took time to get used to the feel but it felt great after. The way I learned was by grabbing onto something, trying it on grass, doing it but instead of landing I keep my front foot on and back foot off. Once I was able to form it I tried landing it and I took all that time committing and I got it so I kept practicing and practicing to get better. The way I learned to do it is to pop, slide/flick, and jump but do it all in one motion or do it all at once. As soon as u pop, slide ur foot, and jump, then land ofc. That’s the end of the story. Keep on skating and never give up. Practice and practice until u get it no matter how long it takes.
slow motion videos are like tutorials for me :)
Magic!
i love how the grip tape sparkles !
Thanks for this, it's really well shot. It will be helpful to start the videos a bit before the pop and also show the entire body Compression/Expansion not just the legs, the arms also play a big part.
Soo Epic!
It looks like they jump and drag a little bit to get the board in the air, before they add the pop and then keep on dragging then leveling then landing
Hi !!! I Mean that's HIGH! great photography too
Which brings me to my second question. How in the freaking world did you get your hands on a freaking Redlake camera? I mean its no Phantom HD but it is sure getting up there.
AWESOME!...
Go to settings by the video and click .25 for ultra slow mo!
super cool dude!!
VERY HELPFUL THANK YOU
