The implications in this fight & how it went made the card PPV worthy for me. Poriers shot selection/placement along with his switch hitting is a thing a beauty.
One thing I know is you can go your hardest against Dustin but he’ll survive and come back and hurt you once you’re exhausted. Same as usman.

The problem with Poirier's guillotine is he would jump guard. The only guilly that helped was the last one which he didn't jump guard for. That high elbow guilly helped Dustin get off the fence and create some space.
BSD very likely had staph… which might have made him worried about going 5 rounds. Went at that pace to finish or be finished.
That seems likely to me as to why BSD went at that pace.
He was tired after the first round. As a BSD fan i knew something wasnt normal. His fight with Moises is the one with the craziest pace but he was less tired at the end

Poirier is a vet. He got wind that BSD had staph and tried to make him grapple as much as possible hence the constant jumping gilly. Once he seen that BSD was gassed in the 2nd he moved in and let the hands go. Easy night at the office for DP. The mma gods blessed him with a weakened young lion that might get him a title shot because the other 2 more worthy contenders are booked. What a chain of fortunate events for DP. I love it.
That constant jumping of the gilly theory is interesting.

Real talk, people are focusing more on winning around than they are winning the fight. Dustin played that first round well. He knew BSD pace was unrealistic, he defends bad positions on the ground well, and DP fought patiently. That’s called a high IQ.

Was also so happy, when BSD began to stumble, but before that I nearly woke up the house because I got so angry when DP kept jumping and failing the guilly. Still love the Diamond❤💎

My honest take on this matchup. I had BSD winning this one. When the staph rumours started and i saw the weigh in. I just knew something was off, you could totally see it and immediately linked it to antibiotics. He was pale and looked lifeless. I switched opinion on Friday and had Poirier as the favourite. The contrast in energy and excitement was huge. You could just see DP being so pumped, and BSD not into it. I really think BSD and team's strategy knowing he wouldn't have the gas tank, is to give it his all in the first 2 rounds. And to me that was obvious, as he was giving so much but already really gassed out at the end of R1, which isn't usual at all for him.
I think a fit BSD would have been more careful and played it a little longer. He almost caught DP tho with a rear naked choke, and i feel a fully fit BSD, would have submitted him, but than again, we don't know if he would have followed that strategy. Not to take anything away from DP. His English boxing is outstanding. Just very unfortunate for BSD but he'll be back for sure. Loved the respect between both of them, but it's fair from BSD to point out to his fans he had a long run of antibiotics in his system as it's obvious it will weaken you.

BSD typically fights at a high pace, but not that high, and he doesn't typically slow down that much either. I tend to believe him when he said the effects of staph infection played into how he approached the fight. That said, BSD needs to work a lot on tucking his chin and keeping his hands up while in the pocket, and using feints to work his way from kicking range, through boxing range and into the clinch.
