  • Over the course of 10 weeks, TV Presenter Emma Willis will work as a Maternity Care Assistant supporting the charismatic midwife team on the busy maternity unit at UK’s Princess Alexandra Hospital...
    In Episode 5:
Emma has been working as a Maternity Care Assistant for seven weeks now and is undergoing training to help new moms nurse their babies.
Emma also joins the labor ward this week, a consultant led maternity unit for higher risk moms-to-be. 41-year-old Nicola and her husband Gavin are Emma’s first patients of the day. Nicola has chosen to be induced and is hoping for a straightforward birth... but her baby is no hurry to come out. Doctor’s must decide whether or not to intervene.
Amy and her partner Billy are expecting their first. Amy’s baby is in a footling breech position, where one or both feet are pointing downwards and will deliver before the rest of the body. The medical team decide to deliver the baby in the OR, which is all too much for partner Billy.
Maddy and her boyfriend Dan are also due to deliver. Maddy suffers from endometriosis, and although that shouldn’t have an impact on her pregnancy, her birth takes a dramatic turn. Her baby’s heart rate begins to drop and she is rushed to theater in a bid to deliver her baby support.

As a woman who is getting baby fever more and more as I get older, this series is not only fascinating but incredibly informative. SO many things I've seen in this program that no one's ever talked about or you wouldn't even think about! I'm really going to miss this show.

I feel ya! I'm almost 36 and no babies yet. I had an early MC a few years ago and it's so hard for me to be around babies right now. I love them so much, but it's hard when I have to go home empty handed when my friends and family all had theirs. I'm not giving up yet. I have this deep biological need to have my own baby. A lot of people don't understand. Im the only adult left in my immediate family who hasn't had a baby. Last Christmas, I stayed home bcuz I couldn't stand thinking about being around my uncle's kids and my older cousin's kids. I don't even want to attend anymore until I have my own. The year prior, I stayed outside crying when the kids were all opening their gifts. It hurts too much.

What I love the most about these episodes, is how much the midwives are supportive, encouraging, sincere, caring, empathetic. Here in the west indies, nurses tend to have very little people skills, and say the craziest things to moms during labour and through their birthing process. It's very demotivating and stressful, embarrassing even, when you have to go for delivery. I wish they would learn how to be compassionate during such a sensitive time.

I find this series so inspirational and grounding. I'm in the process of applying to colleges, and sometimes it feels like the results of my applications are the whole world...when they really aren't. videos like this remind me of how minor college applications are, and how life is much more than where I end up going to college.
    thank you.

    • @CCAnne
      @CCAnne Před rokem

In all honesty not many jobs care what college I realized only when your in a very high class an it’s bragging rights, sadly those I’ve met in that category are in high paying jobs they didn’t truly even earn. Many people attend top colleges but their parents status and 6 figure salary really purchased the degree. Only time I think it may differ is on medical school. I truly wish I didn’t spend the amount of money I did if I had only known now how experience is more then the degree even at times. I hope your doing well in your career but remember do something you LOVE if you do something you do not really like just for the salary you will be miserable! Don’t be miserable life’s to precious 🙏💕😊

I was 18 when I got pregnant, 19 when my son was born…my perfect beautiful baby boy🥰
They didn’t teach anything about breast feeding when I was in the hospital. I had my son at 9:32p and ate, threw up, then fell asleep all around midnight then I was abruptly woken up with a nurse pushing my baby to my breast😱 she was hollering “WAKE UP!! Your baby is starving!!” Then she left…..I was all alone, just me and baby. I didn’t have a clue what to do, but I tried. When we went home I was still trying to figure out the breast feeding. It wasn’t working 👀 my baby would just cry and cry so I brought him to his pediatrician and found out I hadn’t produced ANY milk! My baby wasn’t eating, crying bc he wasn’t getting fed😩 I felt like a complete failure! Telling my baby I was so sorry for being his biggest let down! I kept thinking everyone was right I’m too young and dumb to be a good mom! But eventually I put those negative thoughts away and told my baby I’d be the best mom I could be and that we will just grow together! Today he’s a healthy, happy, kind hearted, intelligent, caring, hard working 27 year old young man who has blessed me with 4 granddaughters, the youngest just six weeks old. My heart ♥️ is full and my soul is complete!
I just want to say that I appreciate all the people that help mothers especially with breast feeding! The nurse I had was no help to me and my baby suffered bc of her lack of interest and/or knowledge🙆🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
Hang in there moms….keep being patient, loving, & consistent with your babies💖 And May God bless your life together💙💚💜

My husband brought me to the doctor 's office as I started to bleed as we were to have a hysterectomy in a week or so as I felt something was awry. So MD did an exam then he wanted an US to check what was going on maybe a fibroid. During this procedure, all of a sudden, we all hear a baby's heart beat. AND prior to all of this,9 years prior I had my tubes tied. Go figure !.
The fibroid was very large and according to the US measurements. Our baby measured being about 4 months along.
One would think as a RN I would know if I was pg. I thought at 48 yrs that I was going into menopause. .
So I was sent to a high risk obstetrics hospital, whereupon I soon had surgery to remove the tumor and the affected R ovary. As there was very little room for our wee one to grow n be healthy.
Our 43:31 two other children aged 7 an 3 were equally as surprised but excited. We chose to keep the sex of our little one a surprise.
Unfortunately after the 8th day I began to miscarry ,with all attempts to stop the contractions. After two days I delivered a baby boy . Thomas John.
We deciced prior to any surgery that my only L fallopian left tube would not be removed but the R ruptured ovarium cyst ovary would be removed. So all of this left me with one L ovary ..Hopefully the one remaining ovary would keep me from going into immediate menopause .
PTL ...this did not occur. .
Our memories of Tommy remain in our hearts.
My husband passed away on 10-13 2021.
May he RIP and watch over Tommy as he grows into a fine young man.
I miss my man so very much and I await the time I meet them in heaven. ❤

The first one the anesthesiologist tore the cord lining (dula I think is what it's called) I had a spinal migraine for 9 months. I had 5 blood patches and none of them worked, so the drs said it will heal on its own.
The second one the anesthesiologist kept hitting the wrong spot and it hurt so bad. He was to close to a vertebrae.
I'm terrified of getting one again. And I will probably have to go through it again in 7 months 😩

Imagine how it feels for a woman deep in labor to find out she cannot rely on the support of her partner who cannot handle even watching what she herself is deeply experiencing. That must be a telling and somewhat sad moment.

Painful nipples that are irritated can be avoided to a great degree by hand expressing a drop of breast milk rubbed gently all over the nipples and allowed to air dry, every time you nurse, being very careful to start on the opposite side every feeding. This allows baby to completely empty each breast every other feeding.

I had a friend come in with me and take pictures so he could see. My 2nd husband practically missed the whole thing. I was only 28 weeks along. It was to be a planned C-section in 2 months. I kept telling them the epidural wasn't working and I felt everything up to and including that "tiny" baby's head. He was 5 pounds and was the biggest thing that ever came out of that hatch. It hurt.

@@justatexasgirl5583 Yep, that it was. My 28-weeker is now 25 and healthy. I can't believe they really thought I could do it. I also think they chose not to believe me that the epidural didn't work. Thankfully, we both survived. I did scream the house down and the nurse told me I was scaring the other patients. Evil nurse.

As I watch this, I want to cry - at 17 years old, I had the first of three abortions, my biggest regrets. The doctor (unfortunately) mentioned that I had conceived two babies. But I never got a chance to think it through and perhaps choose to carry the pregnancy through. My narcissist witch of a mother never even considered 'letting' me have the babies, that would have taken attention away from her. Fortunately, my mother is long gone. What an absolute witch of a 'mother'. Fortunately my father is and was always loving, but couldn't stand up to the b***h that was my mother. She sucked the air out of a room. Thanks for nothing, really glad you are gone. Life could have been so different. (I remember that mother's in the neighborhood felt so sorry that I had such a horrible woman for a mom. They often didn't want to let go back to her after playing with their own children.) Heartbreaking.

oh my with Maddy's birth! To think if they would have just moved her and taken a min to readjust she would have a nice calm birth. (I know I wasn't there but you see this a lot, not giving the woman/baby a couple extra min where a diff outcome would be more desirable for mom and baby) Sometimes just taking a few extra min is all it takes. Doc did not need to cut her and they scared the shit out of her that her body said well shoot we need to do this thing! This shows me that even with hospital midwives they are still too medical minded and don't trust the process and the women. Still an advocate for a birth house or home birth with a midwife that does NOT work in a hospital.

or if they had waited another minute...a horrible outcome could have happened. My mother in a L&D nurse and has seen some pretty horrible outcomes from home births..

I agree!! They are very impatient at hospitals. That’s why we’re not doing a hospital birth, we’re going to a birth center. It’s ridiculous that they induced her because of her age when her baby was fine! The midwives at the birthing center confirmed that if you are low risk with a healthy pregnancy, you are more likely to have issues at a hospital because of all the interventions and they’re pushy and do not respect natural births.

I feel so bad for Maddy that she had to get a episiotomy , its so damaging to the vagina and she runs the risk of infection . Wish she would of had the option to tear naturally but also glad to see she is okay.
