A new film about the once-thriving Palestinian city of Lyd, now known as the Israeli city Lod and home to Ben Gurion Airport, has begun screening in the United States. The film is a “science fiction documentary” that depicts the Palestinian city both with and without the 1948 Nakba, when over 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and villages. In Lyd, Israeli soldiers massacred hundreds of Palestinians in Dahmash Mosque during their takeover of the city. “We use the story of Lyd to symbolize the story of the Nakba, the Palestinian Nakba, the demolition and expulsion of over 600 villages all across Palestine,” explains Rami Younis, a descendant of Nakba survivors from Lyd. Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland, the co-directors of Lyd, join Democracy Now! to share excerpts from their film and discuss the vision behind their project.

Our family comes from Lyd. The events of July 1948-when my father and his family were violently expelled from their home and forced to march to Barfiliya, never to return- have reverberated throughout my entire life. I live in Europe and my Israeli neighbor grew up in Barfiliya (present day Modi’in), though he had never heard of it. Last summer my cousins and I interviewed our oldest living relatives about some of the details of 1948 that had been just too painful for our parents to discuss while they were alive. We imagined that if the world understood how brutal the foundation of the ethno-nationalist state was, they would think twice about upholding its supremacist and separatist policies. Then October 7 occurred.
Blame the Palestinians for starting the w@...r.
I have no words to express my disgrace and remorse for what happened in that part of the world and only coming to the knowledge of it after October 7th. As insignificant as they may be, nevertheless, I offer my sincere apologies. 🙏🏽
There is a documentary called Gaza Guetto 1985 that shows scenes from 48 and 67....Ghetto*
This is so incredibly devastating to watch knowing how wrong genocide is, I am so sorry! We see the lies, we know the truth, why our governments join together to protect this evil is shocking.❤️🕊🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Notice its description is a Sci-Fi Doc.
@@WarPlanRed1 what's your point exactly?
@@shamim621 That it’s labeled as Sci Fi.
And what should concern us in the USA is that we are facing now serious threats to our freedom of speech and some of our civil rights as to peaceful protests that are suppressed by police force and even detention.
It's because America is occupied by Zionists and many Americans don't know. They control your media, economy, politics, universities, school curriculums, etc.

It is very important film. It takes down propaganda that was fed to people around the world that Palestinian left on their own because of war.
I am an example of those who believe in it. Until now when the truth is finaly coming out.
even if they left, do you have the right to own the land? it's called land grabbers, colonization.
but anyways they first wanted to buy Palestine and got rejected by the Ottoman empire. after the fall of the ottomans brittain was the mandate of Palestine and they talked. from there (see balford declaration) everything started and is ungoing.

You have been correct in the past, but that is poor judgement considering it's a genocide.
The whole world now is aware of ysral atrocities.
as a Canadian but also Aboriginal I never paid that much attention to the middle east, that was a different world to me! when I started seeing the genocide I became interested it was the same familiar story of my Native ancestors, millions of my people were starved slaughtered unless the came to Christ most refused and so they tried to kill and starve them instead! Sarah and Rami, thank you for doing this. It's important not to lose history. It is important to keep a record of history and the nakba that happened for the future
It is already sold out at the Chicago Palestinian film festival. While I am so glad to see this, I hope you can add more screenings. I very much want to support the film and see it. ❤ 🇵🇸
My mothers’ family comes from Lyd, her family were forced out in 1948 when she was a teenager (my fathers’ family also forced from Akka), I was born in Lebanon, I’ve never forgotten my origins, I’m 66 yrs old now and my daughter who is a third generation feels even more Palestinian! they can do whatever they want but nobody will ever make us not belong to our land!
Beautiful your daughter carries Palestinian pride. Sending hugs from Borikén 🇵🇷💗🇵🇸
And 850,000 Jews were robbed and forced out of Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Yemen, Syria etc after living in some of these countries for 2,500 years. The Jews remembered their land for 2,000 years since the Roman expulsion in 70 AD and the Babylonian expulsion in 586 BC so it's OK for "both people's" to remember our land.

In 1948 the Arabs were told to leave by their leaders with the idea that they would go back to their homes when the war ended. Some stayed.
If there had not been a war history would be very different.
If Europeans never went to that land in shiploads history would be very different indeed.
That's bs told to you by your elders, the actual history is hidden in the Israeli archives. As Ben Morris points out, the Nakba started even before the Arab countries started to fight.
Villages like Deir Yassin (which had an agreement not to have any military outposts and kept to that agreement) was depopulated by the Haganah, the Lehi, and the Irgun (the terrorist groups that went on to makeup the IDF) before any Arab country step foot into Palestine.
Nearly half of the refugees in 1948 were already forced to flee before any Arab country intervened. That means around 350k people were already refugees before the "first Arab-Israeli war" erupted.
History wouldn't have been different because the goal of Ben-Gurion was always to ethnically cleanse the region of Arabs, He talked about "population transfers", etc.
@@REDDEADANDGTACLUBThank you. I came here to say the same thing. These people actually think we are dumb and uninformed
No. We know that many people---especially in cities---were driven from their homes by armed Zionist militia members. They were given ten minutes to pack, marched to ports, and sent to Gaza via boats. The Zionists emptied entire neighborhoods in Jaffa this way. Israeli historians have published a great deal about this officially suppressed history.

Palestinians are recent construct in the last hundred years. They are basically Arabs coming from the surrounding countries. Yasser Arafat coined the term Palestinian as a political tool. There was never a Palestinian country for the Palestinians. They don’t have any history of any government, leaders, recognition as a Palestinian state, currency, or any history of a country. The term Palestine was because it was the British mandate of Palestine, but it was not because of the made up term of Palestinian, which they adopted for the Arabs of the surrounding areas who came to the land in recent past century..you can also look up Mosab a Palestinian who was a member of Hamas, his father is the cofounder of Hamas and he speaks of this made construct of “Palestinian Palestine.” It simply never existed.

There doesn't have to be a state, a region, or anything as a basis for a group of people defining themselves as the [The People of] 'XY'.
'The people of XY' are the people of 'XY' because they are a *_large_* community of people, connected through a common culture and history [and language].
Conclusio: 'The Palestinians' do not need a state or region or buildings or kings or coins or whatever representations to be 'The Palestine People/The Palestinians'. They simply are, by commonly agreeing on choosing to be such and by the qualities named above.
That's the definition of 'A People'.
The 'Sinti- and Roma-People' here in Germany for example, the 'Zigeuner'/the 'Gypsies', they do not have a state, they do not have coins or cultural buildings, but they are a (more or less) large group of people, connected by a common culture, historie, suffering, traditions, [language] and define themselves as 'The Sinti and/or Roma People'. That's all it needs. And for this, also 'The Palestinians' are ... real ... and a State of their own would simply be the topping on it, not a necessity though.
@@Vorname_Nachnahme The point is Yasser Arafat came up with the term “Palestinian” for the Arabs that have only been in Israel for the past 100 years. They don’t have deep roots to Israel, they’ve never had a country. They can call themselves what they want but they were known simply as Arabs from surrounding countries who came to that region.

With scholars stating Abraham *_coming from_* a place in lower Mesopotamia, which is now modern day Iraq, and from a place there about 200km southwest of Bagdad, so Abraham and his "family" were basically Arabs. And, on top, foreigners in the 'Palestine Region'/the southern levant already inhabited. By the 'Canaaites'. So never been indigenous to the 'Palestine Region'.
_"The country considered Palestinian is Jordan [...]"_
No. Jordan is Jordan and Palestine is Palestine. In 1921, the British divided the region in two: east of the Jordan River became the Emirate of Transjordan, to be ruled by Faysal's brother 'Abdullah, and west of the Jordan River became the Palestine Mandate.
_"[...] created by the British mandate [...] they gave more land to the Arabs 77% than Jews 23%."_
No.
*_"The resolution recommended the creation of independent Arab and Jewish States linked economically[2] and a Special International Regime for the city of Jerusalem and its surroundings. The Arab state was to have a territory of 11,100 square kilometres or 42%, the Jewish state a territory of 14,100 square kilometres or 56%, while the remaining 2%-comprising the cities of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the adjoning area-would become an international zone."_*

It is even disputed if there was ever meant to be an actual Jewish State in the 'Palestine Region'/southern levant:

_The Israel-Palestine conflict seems to be insoluble today more than ever. A hundred years ago, on 2 November 1917, the document that provoked him was published: the Balfour Declaration. It promised the Jews a national home and the Arabs that their rights would not be curtailed._
[...]
_The Balfour Declaration laid the foundation for the ongoing conflict between Jews and Arabs._
[...]
_The Balfour Declaration contained 67 words, nothing more, but these 67 words offered a lot of room for interpretation._
_The British historian James Renton has intensively explored the space of possibility that these 67 words opened up. In 2007 he published his widely acclaimed book "The Zionist Masquerade" on the emergence of relations between the British government and the Zionist movement during the First World War:_
_„The question of what exactly the British government has promised the Zionist movement has been hotly debated since the publication of the Balfour Declaration. The British Government did not care at all about clarifying the impact of the declaration on the Holy Land. What interested her was the question of how she could use the supposed power of the Jews for herself. She was mistakenly convinced that by supporting Zionism, she would be able to harness the influence of the Jews she believed in. That is why the British government opened a propaganda office immediately after the publication of the Balfour Declaration in order to be able to extract as much political capital from the declaration as possible."_
_The British government did not define what it meant exactly when it spoke of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine. It remained open whether this meant a cultural centre or a state. Historian James Renton says he has found no evidence in the archives suggesting that the British government wanted to launch the Balfour Declaration to establish a Jewish state._

_Renton comes from a Jewish family and grew up in North London, but his research interest, he says, has less to do with his youth: »There was little talk at home about Israel. Instead, his interest in imperial and colonial Britain began in school when he wrote essays on the founding years of Israel._
_James Renton completed his PhD at the Faculty of Jewish and Hebrew Studies at University College London (UCL). His studies led to a first book called The Zionist Masquerade. While many consider the Balfour Declaration to be only an early founding document of modern Israel, Renton believes that more was behind it._
@@Vorname_NachnahmePalestinians wasn’t even a thing until Yasser Arafat used that name in the 60’s. The Arabs who were only recently called Palestinians who came from Jordan and other surrounding countries, were not in Israel for very long, at most 100 years. No ancient roots there.
In 1921 the British gave 77 percent of the British Mandate of Palestine to Jordan (Arabs/ “Palestinians”). No jews live there. The remaining 23 percent was then partitioned again to establish a Jewish state and and Arab state. Which the Arabs turned down because they didn’t want a Jewish state. Israel is 0.4 percent of the entire Muslim and Arab controlled Middle East. This isn’t just about land.
@@Vorname_Nachnahme You immediately discredited yourself when you wrote the words “Europe, where they {Jews} crawled out from.” Clearly you are anti Jewish and biased.
expropriation.
