"A Day in the Life of Abed Salama": 5-Year-Old's Death Sheds Light on Life Under Israeli Apartheid

  • We spend the hour with Nathan Thrall and Abed Salama, the author and subject of a remarkable new book detailing the many bureaucratic barriers and indignities that make the lives of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation even more difficult. A Day in the Life of Abed Salama: Anatomy of a Jerusalem Tragedy focuses on the 2012 death of Salama's son, 5-year-old Milad, who was killed in a fiery bus crash during a school field trip to a theme park. What followed was a desperate daylong search by Salama and his family to locate Milad's body across different cities and hospitals, encountering numerous barriers due to the Israeli occupation system, like different ID cards giving varying levels of access through military checkpoints, and lack of help from any Israeli authorities. "This awful event allowed me, in telling the story, to describe the entire elaborate system of segregation and subjugation and apartheid in which all of these people live," says Thrall, who first wrote about the tragedy in a 2021 essay for The New York Review of Books . Salama says his main motivation in participating with Thrall was to keep Milad's memory alive. “When I start to talk about him, I feel that his spirit is behind me, around me,” he says. “I hope if anyone from the American government hears me … we want only justice. This is what we want as Palestinians.”

I have family in refugee camps all over Palestine. The Israeli soldier that killed my aunt Huda Hawaja in Aida Bethlehem smiled on camera and said he was purifying the land. This interview I uploaded to my channel for the world to see what this 'conflict' is really about. Please remember that after the 30 years of British occupation that dismantled Palestinian farms, libraries, and infrastructure, we had our Nakba where over 530 Palestinian villages were destroyed by acts of terror to make way for the Israeli occupation that stands today. I hope for freedom for my children to return to our home and to live with democracy and equality for all people all religions not for the benefit of only 1.

Would doctors have been nice and helpful to them, when they weren't performing experiments on them? How about the slave labor, gassing, the starvation and other tortures?

This is truly horrifying, not only because of the tragic loss of this man, but also due to the racist and deplorable conditions created by Israelis under their apartheid rule. It's as if they're attempting to establish a situation where Palestinians bear the brunt of the pain Jews endured during the Holocaust, perpetuating a cycle of dehumanization across generations. The racist sentiments and animosity towards Palestinians in Israel are eerily reminiscent of the radical right's racism in the US. One can see that it stems from the shared commonality of neo-fascism.

    • @CrazyRev

People who throw the word "apartheid" at Israel should check out the situation in South Africa, and the southern United States, last century. I am still awaiting someone to tell me which shops, hotels, etc in Israel have notices stating "Only Jews allowed"; where there is public transport that segregates Jews, and non-Jews; which beaches have areas to which non-Jews are denied access; etc. They should also explain why, in an allegedly "apartheid" state, non -Jews hold positions of authority and influence in every area - the Knesset, education, medicine, etc.
As Israel has already handed over "land for peace", perhaps the finger should be pointed at the leaders of the various factions in the Gaza strip - it is they who refuse to compromise. Terrorist groups like Hamas have, in their manifestos, the clearly expressed desire to destroy the State of Israel, and annihilate the Jewish people. What nation would sit by and allow that to happen to it?
Of course every story that brings a tear to the eye provokes passion - but please look at ALL of the facts!

@@CrazyRev Let's take apartheid right out of the conversation then. No threat automatically justifies settler colonialism, forcing people into a concentration camp and denying their access to clean water and food, consistent indiscriminant bombings of that camp, dehumanizing all the people who live there with racist propaganda, or devaluing the loss of their children's lives. When the Israeli government has given the other side countless more casualties than they ever receive (1/3 of which consistently are kids), when they let defense manufacturers test biological weapons on Gaza, when Jewish people call other Jewish people Nazis for supporting Palestinian human rights, the people with the power and who therefore hold more responsibility, ARE NOT HAMAS. Not to mention, the average Gazan was 3YEARS OLD when Hamas was put in power. Maybe you should be more critical of the information you have, because it sure doesn't seem like you're promoting human rights in the conversation.

    • @taylorrae3947
      @taylorrae3947 Před 6 měsíci

@@CrazyRev Also, we know that terror groups are formed when the conditions of life are lacking due to an oppressive force. Don't ignore that. Israel's illegal occupation has caused a lot of suffering and many historical occupations have also. If any Gazans had US indoctrination about freedom, I guarantee their response to this occupation would be far more loud and violent. Many Americans are being hypocritical as hell because we don't have to live that hell. Think harder about their situation. Think harder about the fact that most of the people who voted for Hamas are literally dead. Think harder about the fact that Israel consistently takes far less casualities. Think about the fact that 1/3 of Palestinian casualities are CHILDREN.
PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS ARE NOT HAMAS AND PEOPLE WITH POWER HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT MISUSE THEIR POWER TO THE POINT OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS. These violations have been CONSCIOUSLY chosen to starve out a terrorist cell, despite potentially 2 million civilians in the same area. They can do better and they refuse.

    • @taylorrae3947

@@CrazyRev If you also have a problem with the term concentration camp:
"a place where large numbers of people, especially* political prisoners or members of persecuted minorities, are deliberately imprisoned in a relatively small area with inadequate facilities, sometimes* to provide forced labor or to await mass execution".
Firstly, 'especially' and 'sometimes' do not mean 'always'. Secondly, we can argue how 'deliberate' the Nakba was, but 70% of Gazans are refugees from it or their descendents.
I prefer to focus on settler colonialism and illegal occupation, but the definition for concentration camp also applies.

so when white people went colonizing the world, they went on a rein of terror. They killed people into submission. It was systematic rounding up of their enemies' kids, the future generation of the other shades, into missionary schools to raise them on white ways. When they grew up to raise the next generation, they couldn't speak on anything they endured as children or what they witnessed and went thru.... Or else. Any defiant people were killed and survivors were terrorized to the point that they raised their next generation to not know about what they endured.... or else they would get blacklisted in their jobs, their families targeted, harassed or even killed.... Noone spoke on this rein of terror and got to live to tell the tale. The FBI tailed Billie Holiday til her dying day over just singing a song that brought awareness to the situation.
      Do you get it now???

They keep people ignorant to it on purpose... just like US history... growing up, the way the school books were written, really had us believing the racism had died out long ago with our great great great great great great great great grandparents... Reality is farthest from the truth.
If most people knew the truth, they wouldn't support it!!!
This is exactly why Britain gaslit its own people about colonization as they went around the world.... White people involved in colonization, hands on, were forced into silence and submission or killed for speaking out on it. Took forever for Britain to admit and tell their own people what went on and what they did.
Many things about colonization are still covered and kept hidden. Do you know there still isn't equal pay????
For the same job, same experience and education, a white man gets paid more than white woman and the white woman will get paid more than any other race and there is a hierarchy.
People try to gaslight you into its not true... It is true.
I wouldn't have read it in a effin article in a magazine and it wouldn't be saying there were studies on this if it wasn't true!!! And yet society will blatantly deny what you see with your very own eyes!!!
And usually people succumb to that peer pressure and just stop questioning anything and remain ignorant of what's going on

Persecuted people are desperate and stop putting others' needs first. If you want to look at the atrocities as totally equivalent, that is. There is collective pain and suffering that comes out for generations when not allowed to live in peace and safety. Israel has been attacked many times; the occupied territories were taken then. Show me any other country pressured to give back land they took in self defense or for any reason, for that matter.
How about Russia, China, the Americas, and on and on. How about the Chinese persecution of the Ughar Moslems - that is extreme persecution but who demands it be condemned. Yes, a what-about-ism but please do tell me - what about?!

My daughter , age, 20, fell and had a complete fracture of her wrist. It was hanging only by skin and nerves.
Two Jewish women saw her fall and rolled up their car window and drove kff. The temperature was around zero f*.
    She walked to our bldg
Her fingers were frozen. She had a hard time getting the key in the downstairs door. She walked up to our apt and called me and called 911.
The police never came. She went downstairs and waited half an hour. A police car drive by. She hailed it.
She said they were reluctant to drive her to the hospital. But, the Irish cop said they would drive her to the ER.
They left and didn't make a report.
The triage put a sling with ice , no pain killer, and left her sitting like that for 13 hours.
When I arrived I also met a Puerto Rican man in hus 20's.
He told me a previous visit was for his 16 yr old brother who was stabbed in his shoulder for no reason just a guy walking by who stabbed him and walked off.
His brother was left in the emergency room for 10 hours before they took him in and he died.
I walked into the inside and asked why they were leaving my daughter like that.
Eventually, 13 hours later, they took her in.
A Dr, orthopedic , Dr Styles, atended her, she screamed kiud during the setting.
At home she developed a fever and complained the cast was too tight.
She had to go back to have the cast changed.
