- Excellent cockpit footage and show footage of Delmar Benjamin flying the Gee Bee R2 in an aerobatic demonstration at Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona, March 1999.

I am glad he shared it with us for as many years as he did. It's amazing to see in flight, and has a great sound too.
Stalls like a "well-flown manhole cover". Love it....... It's clear that the reputation of the originals was in many ways well-deserved but Delmar shows that it's perfectly safe as long as you are one of the very, very best and most skilful pilots around.
Yea, thanks for the comments - he put on a great show and did this show for about the right amount of time too , retiring it when it was appropriate. Hats off to Delmar!
Saw this fly many years ago in Seattle . Awesome
That's a great looking bird never gets old
No kidding. I love it.
I always enjoyed watching Delmar fly the Gee Bee but I have to admit, as an event producer it made me nervous. The crowd LOVES it though and it is a great looking aircraft. What a thrill it must have been to see Doolittle turn the corners in that thing at the Cleveland Air Races in the 30's.
Delmar Benjamin would do things in his Gee Bee that Doolittle would never dare to do!
In 1932 this airplane was known as a killer and most racing pilots were afraid to fly it. It demands lots of respect but Delmar rolled this airplane inverted right after takeoff on the initial test flight. It's been said it's like flying a milkstool in a tornado.
Thanks I learned a lot from this video
You're right, wins all around! I LOVE Journey too. I only wish Steve would tour with the band again. That would be a great show to see.
What I like about the Disney movie "Planes" is that one of the main characters is a GeeBee racer. It'll introduce a lot of kids to aviation, I'm sure that when kids see your plane they'll go "Oh wow, so this is the kind of plane El Chupacabra is!"
F.Y.I.- My Dad, George S. Armistead flew A GeeBee Q.E.D. in the 1938 air race! He lost oil pressure, and was un-able to finish. What's on my mind these days, I have a "contestant's" badge from him from the 1936 Reno Nats. air race? His name is on the roster for the 1938 air race, but not the 1936 air race! Airheart was a good friend of his in those days! Could this badge have been a "gift" from her to him? Maybe??? Thanks for the video, George K. Armistead In Big Bear City, Ca.
George Armistead Wow, that's really cool, thanks for sharing. I wonder if they just gave him the contestants badge so he could get in the pits, the way we used to give certain "qualified" pilots Hot area passes, so they could mingle with the other pilots? That was always common. I wonder if it was common then too? I guess we'll never know. Now, if that came from Earhart, it would be incredible!
Military History and Aviation Like you say, we'll never know!
Real interesting though - either way. I love the Cleveland Air Races and its heritage.
Lol Journey playing in the background...full of win.
so where is the cockpit footage??
Saw on another video Delmar told Kermit Weeks who now owns this it flies great just keep it above 100 mph.
that's cool. I didn't know it was Kermit who purchased it.
My favorite airplane...looks like a giant bumble bee, buzzzz!
I know, it's SO unique. And it was great to see it flying again. Too bad he's not flying it anymore. It had a great chugging sound to the engine too. Thanks for your comment.
Delmars version was more stall proof because he had washout built into the wing . Tech that wasn't around during the time of the original .
yes, still a great show. Doubt if I would have the balls to step in that cockpit.
He still had the same airfoil that would induct very unstable vibrations. All beehees had this issue. With modern computers we can see how unstable they actually where. Even this plane they analyzed and had a scary vibration induced stall characteristic
Not sure about that. If you read Delmar' s book he states that the replica was built exactly per original except fro better brakes etc
Is that... El Chupacabra?
What beautiful little plain it's hard to believe that it could fly computerless and lack of avionics . Any way it was awesome 👍
Glad you liked it. It is a super cool plane
Saw one in the 50's in Scottsbluff, NE. My dad said he would never fly one too hard to fly.
Don't think there were any original versions since the early 30s... As far as I know, Delmar was the first flying replica.
Thanks for the comment. I hope the kids are exposed to the GeeBee because of Disney Planes because it's an amazing aircraft... great lines, great performance for its era and a great part of American aviation history.
She's my favorite plane.
+TheCoolProfessor Oh yea, she's a classic. Can you imagine what it would have been like to sit in the crowd at the Cleveland Air Races in the 1930's and see Jimmy Doolittle fly the GeeBee? amazing.
the reason why is the stearing is VERY sensitive and landing the plane with no susspention was extreamly difficult for even the best of stunt pilots! but people say that its still fun to fly in one of these flying coffins!
dang no suspension? Every landing must weaken the air frame little by little till a wing falls off mid flight. Looked pretty stable here in the hands of a skilled pilot though.
All this noise, I just want to hear the Pratt and Whitney unleashed.
Yea, I know. I may have different, ground based footage of this performance, but I haven't been able to find it yet. I'll let you know if I do find it and I'll post it. Love this plane.
Agree in a way, but I got interesting some facts about the plane too.
Bla bla bla bla bla (oh wait I think I hard the engine.. maybe) bla bla bla :-)
Fantastic ! Incredible . How come this GB and its pilot are so good , and the original models were so accident-prone ? Has there been any change in this replica-design towards the original one ? Is the replica structurally stronger than the 30's models , because i saw one filmreel where one crashed because its wing broke on a low pass . Is the knowledge of how to fly it better know , or different ? What is the difference here ? Must be something .
to my knowledge there is no difference. in fact as I understand it he actually even talked to one of the old granville brothers or one of the last surviving engineers. but you're right, materials may be stronger today. he hung it up at the right time too as he knew that aircraft is inherently dangerous
He’s a pilot
oh yea, and he quit at the right time
Looks like a bit of dihedral on
this model. Did the original have
this?
It's important to remember the level of experience that pilots of the day had, or lack thereof. The aircraft isn't quite the horror story it is made out to be, although it is no J3. P-51's have their engine torque challenges also.
yep
How old is Delmar now? Is he still flying it in 2021?
not sure how old he is but no, he's no longer flying it. it's in a museum now.
This Geebee is now owned by Kermit Weeks at his Fantasy of Flight museum, I think Kermit plans to get it flying again eventually
That would be.... El Chupacabra in the flesh! :)
Rudder footage!
Ineke Mateman I sure wish he was still flying this demo. It was always a treat to see the GeeBee in the air
+Military History and Aviation i wish i got too see him, too young
chiwea123 The GeeBee show WAS in fact amazing. Sorry you didn't get to see it.
So that's why it gets over stressed, then.
According to Su-35S logic, This is the mostes bestes doge-fighter in all land
Yes Lady ,"great video"….....
Put enough HP up front and you can fly a BOULDER! :)
ha! no doubt!
Que agonia meu Deus...
Puro chupacabras volador. Yo soy más el chupador de chuminos😊
